My Wednesday random is this nugget of advice: when you get your TDaP shot, get it on the arm you use the most. The old recommendation was to get it on your non-dominant arm, but now they recommend the dominant arm because you use it more, and using it will get the soreness out. I got mine on the right side (I'm a righty) and it was also nice to be able to sleep mostly on my left side without my arm being incredibly sore.

Great advice! Wish I had thought about this before I got mine - my left arm was sore for a good few days and worse when I slept on my left

I always request any intramuscular shot be given in my butt. Way more meat back there.
I read that the Rhogam shot used to be given there but it isn't anymore. Anyone know why? I got that and my tdap in my arm last appt.
Used to be given in the arm or butt? I got my Rhogam last week and it was in the butt (without me even requesting it). That one hurts. The needle is big and the serum burns. But I wasn't sore for more than an hour.

    Edited to add more.
  • Dang it I wish I had seen these before I got my tdap yesterday! Got it in my left arm like a chump because I thought that's what you were supposed to do. Makes sense to me now that I should have gotten it in my right.

I failed to think of this and regretted it deeply.

  • I must have some fat ass arms because the TDap didn't bother me at all?? I got it in my right arm and switch between sleeping on both sides during the night. I never thought about getting a shot in the butt!
  • @dolewhipper they gave me my rhogam shot in the butt but haven't gotten tdap yet. Provider preference?
  • @Jodi1980 Muhahahaha! I tried googling it but I had no luck.

I got my Rhogam shot In my butt last visit. They didn't want to give me the trap shot at the same time because they said the Rhogam makes the tdap less effective. I'll get it next week in my arm. I'm sure all practitioners are different.
  • A few summers ago, I had to get rabies shots. When I was in the ER getting the first one, the nurse had me lay on my side with my ass out to get my shots. (SIX! It sucks.) She pinched my butt and said, "not enough muscle" and then gave me the shots in my lower back before I had the chance to at least pull my pants up. I'll never forget her.

  • Tdap didn't bother me at all either.  The nurse told me to "exercise" my arm- move it around a lot the first few hours after getting it.  It also helped she was telling a funny story while she was giving it so I wasn't so tense.  Good luck ladies!
  • My Amazon wish list has gotten pretty comical these days. A sitz bath and some adult diapers are now at the top of my wish list. ha!
  • ^wss! And even if they don't give one to you, they probably have one if you ask. So wait to order it until after you deliver (or ask your OB or a nurse on the hospital tour).

Now I want otter pops and no car to go to the store. I'll be asking my family to pick some up on their way home tonight!
  • While we are talking about the TDAP, does anyone know when it became standard procedure during pregnancy? My mom said in all seven pregnancies, she never got it while pregnant. Her last pregnancy was eight years ago. I told her its standard procedure now but it baffles her. Apparently it used to be given after delivery?

I'm not sure when it started but my last pregnancy was 5 years ago and it wasn't procedure at that time - at least at my OBGYN.

  • @KatieBird0106 Almost three years ago I had it when I was pregant with my son. I'm confused about whether or not I'm supposed to get it again? I guess the point of doing it while pregnant is that it could pass antibodies to the baby. Going to ask my OB about this tomorrow.
  • I had gotten it before I got pregnant with my son bc they told me to and then they had me have it again later in preg (my son is three too).
  • @YeezusButters did you get it after delivery? Or was it just not given then?

I don't remember getting it at all.

  • @KatieBird0106 My last pregnancy was a little over 3 years ago and they didn't do it during pregnancy then. I got my TDAP after delivering right before we went home from the hospital.

So I think they changed the guidelines to getting it while pregnant sometime in 2013.

I had to get it again this pregnancy and they said every pregnancy you'd get one. They also said people in my family need to get it again.

  • I echo what @YeezusButters and @mandyjulie said - my OB told me that you get the TDap every pregnancy, while normally if not pregnant, you'd only need it once every 5-10 years (forgot which one).

Anyone know when belly buttons pop out? I am 30 weeks and I thought it would happen by now...
  • I thought of another thing.. is anyone doing something like freezing meals during the last few weeks to throw in the crock pot after you have the baby? I'm debating whether or not to actually do this since it'll be summer and we rarely if ever use our crock pot when it's so hot out, but I'm not sure what the other route would be. Thoughts?

I've pinned a shit ton of them but who knows if I'll go through with it. It would definitely be helpful to throw shit in there and have a delicious meal.

Might be different for me because I am in a big city, but I am not doing this. I have seamless for online delivery. Planning on that.
  • @IB113 - my belly button is flat but has not popped out and I'm not really expecting it to. I think it just depends on the shape of your belly. I also don't have a linea nigra and feel kind of weird about that since it seems so common.

@schaze - I'd really like to plan ahead and make freezer meals but I don't think I am going to. I do think it would be immensely helpful because even now I'm too lazy/tired to make dinner half the time and we end up making canned soup or quesadillas.
