Re: Newborn Questions

  • And now I'm freaking myself out googling horror stories about aspirating. Definitely not sleeping tonight.

  • @mrsmtothek I'm not sure nasal congestion is a big warning sign of aspiration. Between nasal congestion and wheezing I would be looking more at a cold, or allergies, than aspiration.
  • I have a question for the STMs. When do baby colors change? I stare into my son's blue-gray eyes and see every color of the rainbow pretty much! It's driving me insane... I want to know where we are going to end up already :) Google says it can take up to a year, but I'm looking for antecdotal stories.

I wonder the same thing every day also! With our first son I know for a fact that by 2-3 months his eyes were distinctively blue and not the newborn slate grayish blue color anymore. With this one I just can't tell yet and he's 3 and a half weeks old. They seem darker than I ever remember DS1's eyes so perhaps they'll be turning brown!

My LO all of a sudden is super congested. I'm sucking snot out of his nose so he can breathe easier. I know a pediatrician won't do anything for him but I feel like because he's only 6 weeks, I should make an appt regardless. Am I being overly paranoid?
Has he been around anything new that he may be allergic to? A new visitor with a perfumed lotion, a room with scented spray? If so sometimes just a bath can really help the congestion.

    -------

The only difference was we started testing out bottle feeding yesterday ( just once) He threw up a good amount last night. We gave him 2 today. I'm worried that he might be aspirating, he's wheezy too.
Maybe baby got some milk in the nose when spitting up and now it's blocking a bit of the airway? I read that both snot and dried milk can cause newborn congestion when I looked it up, my baby was wheezing too. I actually had my husband hold her in the bathroom while I took a hot shower (we don't have a humidifier) and then I gently nose-Frieda-ed some loose snot out and she was good as new. You might also try a saline solution like 'little remedies' but unless there's a fever, I'm pretty sure this is super common.

I went to the pedi when LO was three weeks because of congestion. I saw boogers in the morning and he sounded really stuffy. Pedi asked if he had trouble feeding and I said that he didn't. The pedi checked his ears, heart, temp, weight and proceeded to tell me to go home because everything's ok. The only time I should really be worried is if LO has a fever and/or is not able to eat. He also told me not to overdo the saline or bulb syringe cause it can dryness and irritation.

  • Thanks guys. Went to the pediatrician to ease my nerves and LO's congestion is normal, thank goodness. Bought some saline drops and we'll see if he does better tonight--last night was awful. Couldn't sleep a wink because he had such a hard time breathing on his back. Poor babe :(

  • My little guy breaths so loudly, I never wonder if he's asleep. Apparently his father was that way and had to have surgery before he was three because his tonsils and adnoids where clogging up his sinuses so badly. My MIL said they showed her what they removed and she said it was a wonder he was functioning at all. He had a deep voice before and a high voice after.

Anyone with a yeast infection on your breasts? What did you use to clear it up? What about clearing it up in baby? If one of you have it you both do right?

Go to the doctor. Thrush can affect your supply if it isn't quickly treated; I have no experience myself but if you want to continue BFing, don't wait on this and don't risk home treatment not working.
  • @korpatch you might want to skip lanolin if you have been using it. It might help trap the yeast and keep up the cycle.

I quit using lanolin ( I use coconut oil which is an anti fungal ) and he has a dr appt Monday. Just wanting to do something in the mean time.
  • When do they start caring about toys at all?
  • When do they start caring about toys at all?
From what I've read it'll be a few months, but as their vision improves they're into faces - especially ones with happy expressions.
  • We have a play mat that has a mirror on it. LO will stare at that and try to reach for it, but doesn't have interest in any other toy.
  • DS (5 weeks) loves the lights (everywhere) and seems interested in the mirror on his play mat.
  • When do you feel it's okay to just let baby cry a bit? I don't mean cry it out overnight but LO has gotten where he will not be calm unless he is being held by someone. He can be fed, clean diaper, have a pacifier, and have had lots of snuggles.

The moment we put him down he starts crying. We've tried the bouncy chair, the swing, his crib he hates everything. I need to be able to shower! I hate hearing him cry but he just screams the whole time I'm in the shower so I've become the queen of 2 minute showers.

I do wear him around the house but I have to be able to put him down sometime! He's fine in his car seat when we go out or are driving but I don't use it in the house because I read it isn't safe to let them sleep in. I'm desperate for just a bit of alone time!
  • @WiseUsagi  I am in the SAME boat. I hoping for some answers, too. You're not alone

  • @WiseUsagi I dont have any advice but I feel your pain. My LO has been doing this for a week now. DH and I bought a new RnP last night that auto rocks (the one we already have doesnt rock on its own). DH put it together today and LO loves it. I have put him down drowsy in it twice now and he goes right to sleep. im hoping this will work for me during the week, when im home by myself. I love cuddling him but it will be nice to shower, use the bathroom, and eat breakfast or lunch without inhaling it because he is crying. Idk if he will be content in it while awake, so I also bought a new carrier (my ktan wrap isnt cutting it) and if need be I will wear him so I can get some things done around the house.

Have you tried swaddling your LO? My baby fights sleep during the day and gets super fidgety. I swaddle him and rock him till he gets sleepy or falls asleep then lay him down (while praying he doesnt wake up as soon as I lay him down). Im hoping this is a short lived phase!
  • @WiseUsagi -I'm mobile so I can't see your ticker, but there's a wonder week between 4.5wks and 5.5 wks that may be interfering with your normally happy baby.

Babies aren't able to self soothe until 4 months, at the earliest. Most babies don't self soothe until closer to 6 months.

I have never been told that its not safe your babies to sleep in car seats. While running errands LO normally falls asleep in his carseat. So when I get home, I keep him in his car seat and go take a shower/ let the dog out/ put groceries away/ eat/ etc. But I am a big believer in not waking a sleeping baby (unless medically necessary)

My Eliot has been able to cry for about two minutes and fall asleep since week two... Is that not self soothing?
  • DD does the same. If she starts legit angry crying I pick her up, but if she's just fussing and vocalizing I let her be because she usually calms down and picking her up just wakes her up like its party time.
@Sarcasm101It's not advised to let babies sleep in their car seats at home because their necks aren't strong enough to hold up their heads. Their heads can flop forward, causing them to lose their airway and suffocate. There was a big news piece on a daycare leaving a baby in a car seat for two hours to sleep; baby died and parents are suing. The only safe place for a baby to sleep is flat on his back until he can roll over by himself. Obviously we can't help if they fall asleep in a car seat but it shouldn't be encouraged when unnecessary.

  • I think it has to just run its course. My baby got it starting week three and it keeps getting worse.

If you're breastfeeding rub some breastmilk on it.  Breastmilk cures all kinds of skin stuff.

It can come and go for a while. I did read hormones have something to do with it...Ollie had it day 2-3 then nothing until this week, when he got a few more spots.

  • Our pedi says it peaks around 4-6 weeks and there's not much you can do about it. DS's was at its worst at 4 weeks. Making sure to wipe his face with a cloth (dry) after each feeding really helped clear it up.
  • Currently DD has some baby acne too . It's worse if she sleeps on me and her face sweats on the side she lays on.

How can I tell if DS is dehydrated? I'm waiting for the pedi to call me back on this. DS has been extremely fussy today. This morning he would not stop crying from so much gas he had. He would literally cry with each fart. Now he is had many extremely runny poops (still peeing the usual). He keeps signaling as if he's hungry but if I feed him that often he'll just spit it/vomit it out. I can hear and feel his stomach grumbling. We've tried gas drops and leg movements. Poop guy is tired but the tummy ache won't let him relax. I hope he doesn't become dehydrated.

If he's having plenty of wet diapers he isn't dehydrated but he sounds gassy and uncomfortable. Do you use a pacifier? DD likes to suck when she poops and my nipples can't take her ferocity.
  • My baby has horrible acne too! It is even on his eyelids and chest.

He occasionally takes the pacifier but spits it out shortly after. He does this with all the different kinds we've tried. We'll burp him and keep him elevated (even when he sleeps). Pedi didn't really recommend gripe water when we saw him last week but suggested the gas drops. We are going to test premie nipples since he's been eating really fast lately. Poor guy I'm running out of options. Baby and mommy need sleep! I've watched my diet too to avoid anything gassy (miss spicy food and beans).

Tongue or lip tie? Pedi might not know how to diagnose. Mine missed a stage three tongue and lip tie.

He has neither. Idk if it's the lactation plus pills I'm trying that's causing the gas. I've tested not taking my prenatals and iron but that didn't help. I did the lactation tea early on didn't notice this amount of gas so not sure if it's the pills. Pedi thinks that it's just something in the milk (caused by my diet) that he doesn't tolerate. So I'm gonna try to cut out as well. I can't believe I have to actually watch what I eat now! I have never had to be on a "diet".
  • Yeah definitely not dehyrated with that many wet diapers! LO was dehydrated in the hospital and one sign was urate crystals...a rust looking color in the diaper but those ended up clearing up. Hope your LO gets some relief soon.

Mine is the same. He had perfectly clear skin until he was 3 weeks and now it's awful.
  • Awful acne for Elijah too...

Constipation which has I've never seen in a breastfed baby....

    Nasal congestion but no snot

How often are you bathing your little ones?
  • How often are you bathing your little ones?
Every other day. If necessary (most times yes) we wipe her down with wet wipes if there is spit up that gets on her and not just her clothes
