    Pumping question:
DS2 is 9 days old and my milk is coming in. I am EPing. I pump every 3 hours. When I pump during the day, I am getting about 3 oz per side. When I pump at night I am barely getting 1.5 oz per side. What is the deal?

I doubt its a supply issue because with DS1, in the prime of my pumping, I could get 6-8 oz per side.
I am EPing as well. I think it's normal for supply to fluctuate between day and night. I've noticed I can't get as much in the late afternoon/evening, but I get more later into the night. 3 oz per side sounds great to me at this point.

I EPd with my last baby as well and experienced similar things.

How much is your LO taking at each feeding? and how often are you feeding? Glad to know I'm not the only one on here EPing :)

My Lo is taking about 3 oz every 2.5-3 hours. I also EPd my last one. I was really hoping to breastfeed this one, but its not working.

I did rent a hospital grade pump from day 1 this time. It works so much better than the medela handsfree. I already have about 50 oz in the freezer!

Same here. This is my 3rd time around and I hoped it would be different this time, but that's not the case.

So another question if you don't mind... how do you handle nighttime feedings? I feel like waiting on cold milk to heat up during the daytime is no big deal, because I can distract DD while we wait or often times I already have it warmed when I see she's getting ready to eat. But at night, it's torturous to make her wait. Any tips?

Confession: I have always given my kids cold milk, straight from the refrigerator. They don't mind at all, probably because they never got use to warm milk.

My mom was horrified when she found out. She went on a googling rampage to try to prove to me that breastmilk HAD to be warm. They only thing she could find is that cold milk might cause gassiness.

I'm not an EPer, but I had to pump on one side for a little while to heal and at night I would keep the last bottle I pumped out fresh at room temp for one nighttime feed. Fresh milk is good at room temp for 6-8 hours, so there was no issue with it going bad.

  • I'm having such a hard time BFing. Currently my nipples hurt so bad so I've just been pumping so that my DH can feed her that way with a cup. It sucks..definitely not as easy as I thought It would be.

Goin to see a lactation consultant tomorrow to see if they can help with the latching. Anyone else having this problem? Whenever LO latches it's so painful even though to me it looks like she's on right. So disheartening:(

You are definately not alone. I have my third appointment with my lactation consultant tomorrow (LO will be 2 weeks old on wednesday this week). I've been having a really painful latch, though it has significantly improved since seeing the LC. LO had also dropped 12% from her birthweight and my milk didn't come in until day 5-6.

I'm really hoping she's finally back to birthweight tomorrow, i know she's getting close. Seeing the lactation consultant has helped me so much,  without her I likely would have already decided on exclusive pumping or formula feeding (both of which I have used while trying to get my milk to come in.) Best of luck to you, I really hope your LC can help you make breastfeeding work for you and LO.
  • I just picked up breastfeeding again and LO is two weeks old! I had to keep stopping because my nipples hurt so bad I would scream... And be cracked and bloody... But now they just hurt all the time even with the breast pump... So... I'm trying the whole breast feeding thing again. Seen a lactation consultant twice, started taking my boy to the chiropractor at 11 days old... And today we went to the pediatrician to check for tongue tie and didn't find one. Definitely don't quite know what to do.
  • To the ladies with nipple pain....just know it's entirely normal for a couple weeks. Even with a good latch and no other issues. It does take a while for our bodies to get used to it. If you suspect a latch issue, and even then, simply for support, then yes a LC visit is a great idea. Breastfeeding I'd definitely not easy, but it's harder for some. With DS1 I struggled a lot. The best thing was going to lactation clinics and keep reading about latch, and practice, a lot!!!

  • @AmadorRose I think she just gets too excited about it. I have started giving her a bit of milk in a bottle with it instead because even giving her bit by bit from the syringe she still does it.

@brenlo42 the Del-Vi-Sol is what we are using. Glad to know we aren't the only ones who experienced it!

This sounds exactly like us. We go to the pediatrician for 2 week app on Wed as well! Our LO dropped 10% from birth weight and so we are hoping she is gaining.

Our app for the lactation consultant is today and she said bring a hungry baby... I feel like that's a hard thing to plan for.

Not to mention, LO just ate probably over 3 or 4 oz over the stretch of 2 hours which is unlike her...she just kept sucking the air like she was hungry snd then kept feeding from the cup..now what little supply we had is completely gone and she just threw it all up. Now I'm nervous and don't know what to do :(

I have a few questions about my LO, hoping some of you mamas can help. Baby is a week and a half old, and he sleeps a lot. He either naps in his lounger chair in the living room with us, or one of us holding him. I've tried a few times to put him on his stomach on my chest, so he isn't always on his back, but he can't seem to figure out to keep his head turned to the side or what to do with his arms. Should he be more on my chest or up higher towards my shoulder? Any suggestions how to position him so he is comfortable?

I read online that tummy time should startaround 2-3 months old, is this what you all are doing? Is he too young to do tummy time right now?

Also, I feel guilty if I'm not holding him while he is sleeping. Obviously I don't hold him all the time, but I just feel bad when he is sleeping in his lounger. I don't want him to feel alone, does anyone relate? Maybe its just my PP hormones, lol!
We've done tummy time since day one. It's never too early to start!! Newborns don't need 45-60 minutes a day (more like a few minutes a day) which is probably where you heard they were too young to start. I try to have LO do tummy time between 2-5 minutes a day on a soft blankie over carpet or our firm bed mattress. He is already so strong and making huge progress! Don't be afraid to start, you won't regret it. They need it!

  • @elasticheart13  yes we had the same issue.  They had me change to allowing baby to empty one side instead of switching breasts.  They also had me start lightly massaging/ squeezing the breast he eats on as he is eating.  After he is done eating I am pumping both sides for about 5-7 minutes. And this is all day.  No pumping at night.  Said it will help get my body regulated.  It's helping.  If you are experiencing any discomfort in your breasts they advised me to get hot washcloths lay on my back and lay the washcloths on my breasts.
  • Also wanted to share that I bought this cover and it is FANTASTIC!! Only wished I knew about it with my other kids. It's from Milksnob.    I highly recommend it.  Works as a nursing cover, car seat or stroller cover and shopping cart cover   Stole photos from their Facebook
  • For those who have/had babies with day/night confusion. When did this happen? Was it right away, or did it pop up a little later? My first was in the NICU for 10 days so she came home later and was already on a schedule. This one came home at 2 days, and so far at 6 days old is still doing well sleeping at night. I am wondering if we may have avoided the confusion, using bright lights sounds and encouraging our 2 year old to behave normally, or if this is something that still may come (probably right when DH has to go back to work if it does...)

  • I gave my LO a pacifier while we were getting some newborn photos done and I've read it can cause nipple confusion so my plan was to never give her one however....
she loved it and I'm tempted to give it to her in the car when she cries.
Anybody BF and using a pacifier?

also I'm pumping a few times a day to try to get a small stash for when my mom and MIL watch her and I'm only getting 1/2 oz each boob if that. Not sure how this is going to work.
DH gave her 2 oz last night in a slow flow bottle and it was gone in 2 min even after he took it out of her mouth a few times.
I BF on demand and every 2 hours at night so maybe there's just no extra ?

I do give my LO a soother once in a while and I breastfeed. It's not always in his mouth but sometimes he wants to suck but is full. He's just eaten and has even spit up a bit for example. Or sometimes I know it's when he's passing gas. You already gave her a bottle so it's the same idea. I think if you have no issues with getting her to latch now it's fine to give the pacifier or bottle once in a while.

I give my lo a pacifier any time he cries if I know he's not hungry and crying for another reason. I asked the pediatrition about it and she said if it soothes him to keep giving it to him. He doesn't seem to be confused at all.
  • I also BF and give LO a pacifier whenever I know she just wants to suck. She likes it. We gave her the pacifier with in her first 12 hours of life and has not had confusion.

True nipple confusion is very rare - so rare that the pediatrician encouraged me to give E a pacifier while we were in the hospital so that she could suck and my nipples didn't take the brunt of it. She continues to use one and BFs very well, even after a rocky start and having to supplement for a few days.

I'm also getting maybe an ounce 1 or 2 x each day and was considering trying lactation smoothies in the AM to help boost my production a bit. I'm also hoping that once I get her on a good schedule and she starts dropping feedings (currently every 2 hours, even through the night), I'll be able to pump during when those feedings should be taking place.

The only thing that has really helped me is to get up 20 minutes or so after her morning meal (between 5 and 7 AM), take a super hot shower, and pump after that. Honestly, I'm usually leaking by the time I get out of the shower. If you don't have time for that, milk is supposed to be most plentiful in the morning and I've also found that looking at her or picutres/videos of her helps a bit, as well.

Day/ night confusion for us, started right away. LO sleeps great during the day. But last night he was up from 11:30-2am despite our best efforts. It normally t takes 2-3 weeks for a baby to sort out the difference.

    Count yourself lucky!

  • My LO is really only awake for a sustained period of time twice a day, around 6:30-9 am and 5.30-8 pm. Those are his fussiest times, too. He sleeps all day with brief wake ups and sleeps noisily and restlessly at night, with longer kind of half wake ups that I try to just nurse through. We are bed sharing because I don't have the energy for multiple failed transitions to the bassinet or even the Rock and play. I tend to try and fail about once per night. Hoping that when he wakes up more during the day the nights will get more predictable. He was 3 weeks yesterday.

I'm also EPing! :) My supply is so variable. My first pump in the morning I sometimes get 4-5 oz per side! But then throughout the day/night it can fluctuate from 1oz-3pz per side depending on time of day.
  • so... Anyone having trouble sleeping through a feeding alarm. If he wasn't in our room, I don't think I'd wake up to feed him at all in the middle of the night. I had this trouble in college when I got really tired, I'd turn off my alarm in my sleep. I've been doing it the past three nights...

I did the first few nights because I was overtired. Napping during the day made a huge difference in my ability to care for LO at night.

I can't wake up to an alarm anymore or my phone going off anymore but I wake up to the slightest noise from my baby.

I just startes doing this last night. All this is getting way too exhausting:(
  • So, Jack is 10 days old today and sleeps all day despite attempts to stimulate him or keep him awake. Last night he woke up EVERY HOUR.
I'm desperate for sleeping advice. I know you can't really "sleep train" a newborn but I can't keep getting up every hour at night and still maintain my sanity during the day.....

In fact, out of exhaustion this morning I dropped 4 oz of freshly pumped breastmilk on myself and the bed. I DID cry over spilled milk.

    HELP!!!!!

  • Hoooooow do you get a freakin' newborn to go to sleep on their own? 10 days in and I can't nurse her to sleep all the time, especially with a toddler! This is absolute nonsense! And this is coming from a mom who has yet to be left with both of them alone! I don't know what to dooooo!

  • Well.. We accidentally started something from day one... Then we realized it worked... At night, after feedings we cuddle a tiny bit skin to skin, then we swaddle him really tight and lay him in his bassinet. He grunts for a bit trying to get out of his straight jacked, but usually goes to sleep on his own. During the day, no swaddling, no bassinet and little skin to skin. This shows him there is a complete difference between day and night. I even try to do the feedings in a different place for both...
but like I said, we accidentally started this routine. He didn't always do it... And we had to let him cry it out for a couple minutes once or twice. And he cluster feeds like crazy after he gets up and before bed. But we found that this works best for us. An added benefit is that my husband sleeps like the dead... So I can turn on a lamp, sit up in bed and nurse him right there.
My son is now 19 days old.
  • Our newborn is 15 days old today. Since day 1 she's done this kind of gasping/wheezing sound while she's eating. Anyone elses LO do that?

I've been thinking she's just trying to coordinate sucking and breathing. She has her 2 week checkup this week, and I was going to ask about it then... but DH is worried.

FWIW She doesn't seem uncomfortable. And she does it whether at the breast or bottle. Thoughts?

I wish I knew the answer to this. My first 2 were bad sleepers from the beginning and I desperately want to do things differently with this one. But I'm at a loss.

Sometimes I can swaddle her, lay her in the rock n play and give her a binkie and she'll fall asleep on her own.... but it's hit or miss.
  • Gassy baby question

I'm using mylicon and gripe water for LO due to her having terrible episodes of gas pain.
its so bad she can't sleep sometimes and just cries and cries ( so do i).
ive tried bicycle legs ,burping over my shoulder also sitting her on my leg and holding her chin in my hand while patting her back and I rarely can get a good burp/toot  but I know she needs to.
Many tips on how else to help her

she also throws up in the morning ( although she sleeps in her mommaroo with her head elevated at night ) but the pediatrician didn't seem concerned

    Gassy baby question

I'm using mylicon and gripe water for LO due to her having terrible episodes of gas pain.
its so bad she can't sleep sometimes and just cries and cries ( so do i).
ive tried bicycle legs ,burping over my shoulder also sitting her on my leg and holding her chin in my hand while patting her back and I rarely can get a good burp/toot  but I know she needs to.
Many tips on how else to help her

I don't know if your BF, but if you are have you tried adjusting your diet? Maybe she's sensitive to something you're eating? I've been extremely careful about what I'm eating with this LO, because my last baby had sensitivities.

It sometimes takes me a good long while patting LOs back and gently bouncing her to get a burp out of her. And when she does, it sounds like a grown man burping. It's like the gas bubble gets stuck.

"Tiger in a tree" hold over mom/dad's arm was sometimes helpful for Lindy when she was gassy. Most of the time it was a total crapshoot and we would try all kinds of stuff to get the bubble out but nothing would consistently work. Rosie responds well to being way up high on my shoulder and having her back rubbed in circles rather than patted, but overall she is much less gassy than Lindy was.

  • My LO has been a little fussy today and has only had one poopy diaper today. I'm breastfeeding and when he's fussing, the only thing that helps him is being on the boobs. Everything has been going great until today. Any suggestions

    HELP!!!!!
Ugh I'm so sorry. They can absolutely be stubborn little buggers when they want to sleep! Don't give up! I wake my LO every 2 hours to eat and its the only way I've been able to get decent stretches of sleep at nighttime (usually he sleeps a minimum of 4 hours for his "long stretch", but averages about 5 or 6 hours, and then another 2-3 hours after that before starting our day). Changing his diaper and/or taking off his clothes usually wakes him right the eff up haha, but you can try singing, tickling him, giving him raspberries, a bath, just get him irritated! Getting him on a consistent feeding schedule (even if he doesn't want to) will definitely help. Good luck!!

Will he nurse if he's drowsy, during attempts at waking him during the day I mean? If you strip him to his diaper and keep tickling his feet or neck if he slows down? That way he's eating during the day and may actually sleep and do longer stretches at night? Every hour is not sustainable for you! Also, is his bed at night different than where he sleeps during the day? Some babies don't like their bassinets because they are flat on their back but sleep in a swing all day or on an incline and prefer that. Just a thought....
