So... newbie here, and I have a potentially silly u/s related question!  Background:  I came off the pill in December, and only had one full cycle before getting my BFP in late February at around 4w0d.  We were originally planning to start trying later this year, but weren't really actively preventing it from happening sooner... just didn't expect it to happen so quickly!  My question is this:  I went to my primary care office 2 days after my positive home test result, assuming they'd do a blood test to confirm, but they said they consider a positive home test to be pretty definite.  They referred me to the OB/GYN office, and I was booked for an appointment on March 31 (8w5d).  Is an ultrasound typically done at the first appointment?  I'm seeing mixed reports.  I feel like I've already been waiting an eternity for the appointment, and I guess I'm not entirely sure what to expect at my first one.  They told me to expect it to take a couple of hours, as I'll meet the NP and the Doctor for an hour each, but that's all I was told.  I'm just feeling so anxious to know whether or not everything is going okay!  It seems like so long to wait, and if they don't do an u/s, they can't be sure everything is normal, can they?  I guess I should probably call them for more specifics, but I didn't want to seem like I was asking them stupid questions either!

  • @shamrocandroll An Ultrasound usually isn't standard at your 1st appt unless you're around 8-10 weeks and even then they may not do it on the very first appt and may have you come back just for that. Basically it all depends on the practice you're going to and what their standard procedure is.  For many woman getting early ultrasounds it's usually because they are considered high risk for some reason or other...again not always the case but usually that's why most people get early ultrasounds pre 8-10 weeks.  I know some offices that won't give one until 12 weeks.  Unfortunately it can be a long anxious wait.

I have my 1st appt tomorrow at 6w,3d and won't be getting an ultrasound but am hoping they schedule me for one soon thereafter.  With my 1st it was done at week 9.

  • @TrulyBlessed22 Thanks!  I guess I should probably just call and ask.  I'll be at almost 9 weeks at my first appointment, and I just want to know that everything is normal!  This is my first pregnancy, so I'm excited and nervous all at the same time!  I seem to have gotten hit with the book as far as symptoms go, which is not so much fun, but means it's more likely things are going normally, I guess... so that's slightly comforting (as comforting as constant nausea, smell hypersensitivity, exhaustion, and aches can be, at least).

Totally call and ask! If they don't give you an answer you like, you can always try different Drs.

@shamrocandroll mine wouldn't give a straight answer. The person on the phone said "it depends on the practitioner whether or not they do an ultrasound at the first visit (8wks)" and I was like "ok well we just made my appointment and we know my practitioner is X so..?" And she was like "yeah it depends." I hope I get one so I feel a little better. Plus I'm making my husband come with me and of course he would prefer that to just waiting for me to get a boring pelvic exam..
  • @whaat We're in the same boat!  My husband took the day off from work, because it's pretty much impossible for him to leave work for part of the day.  He'll be limited to how many of those he can do, so I want to make sure the ones he comes to really count!

Hahaha, I hadn't noticed that! I have an optimistic yolk sac.

  • I had one last Friday 3/19 but there wasn't anything to see. No yolk sac or anything that was visible. Sonographer said my uterus looked pregnant and there hasn't been any bleeding. They scheduled me to come back on the 28th. Hopefully good news then.

  • First ultrasound was today.  No pics till next scan.  Heartbeat found, 1 baby (I have twins not through infertility), measuring 6 weeks instead of almost 8.  Apparently I was born with a bicornate uterus, and didn't know of this till now.  So scan was abdominal, then transvaginal, and after no luck abdominal again.  Can't wait for next one when baby is bigger and I have pics!
  • @sweetlyuntied Sweet ultrasound :) I instantly saw the face of Mario in your pic. Tell me I'm not alone! I had to show my husband. He saw it, too :)

I get my first ultrasound tomorrow!  Pretty excited since our last two pregnancies ended in miscarriages and didn't make it this far.
  • I'm sorry to hear about your scare @lilwonder. Hope you feel a little less worried and get to see that heartbeat on Monday. I'll keep my fx for you!
