  • Any good lactation cookie recipes? I made some that taste really good but they're flat and cooked weird. Helppp.
Cookies will come out flat if you used melted butter or butter that was too soft, your cookie sheets were hot, or you didn't add enough flour.
  • @brianna91chavez refrigerate your dough for a couple hours before you bake!
  • About how much does your LO take in a bottle at each feeding? Going back to work next week and want to make sure I give more than enough for him while I'm away. Is 3-4 oz per bottle/ feeding about what you give?

My daughter drinks 5oz every 2-3 hours while I'm at work. She's 18 weeks and little.

I give my mom 15 to 20 Oz a day she usually has a little extra and just freezes the additional milk. Grayson drinks at minimum 12 Oz, but will drink an additional 5 Oz or so during a growth spurt.

I send four 5 oz bottles.  Sometimes she eats the whole bottle other times it is broken up in two little feeds.  She is a pig and eats 20 oz every day.
DS at this point was only eating 12oz and was big boy (he reverse fed somewhat).
I think you kind of have to guess where to start then adjust when you see what your LO eats.  Send a few frozen bags just in case.

My LO gets 3 bottles w 6oz each while I am at work. She typically takes 3-4oz from first bottle, 4-5oz from second and 5-5.5 from the late afternoon bottle.   I still supply 6 ounces per bottle though. LO is 18weeks old.
  • Thanks for your responses, ladies! What do you do with the unused milk (i.e., LO only takes 3 oz of a bottle filled with 5 oz)? Do your caretakers freeze the leftover milk?
  • I have an oversupply so I let her toss it if it is just an ounce or two, she hates to do that though!  Anything she leaves in the fridge at the end of the day I do freeze.

My son takes 3-4oz every 2 hours. I send 3oz bottles and then I send a container with a little extra in case he is still hungry. I send 3oz because I went to the LC and did a weigh, feed, weight. He took 3oz before he started playing with the boob. Have you tried that?

I could be wrong but I don't think you can save an leftover bottle if it's been heated. And if it wasn't heated I don't think you can save it if was leftover from a feeding (ie if LO only drank 3 of the 4 oz from the bottle) bc it can be a breeding ground for germs. Hopefully someone else will have more knowledge.

You are right, once baby starts eating a bottle the milk cannot be stored again.  We use a 4 hour window to finish the bottle once it was heated up.  We may reheat it in the 4 hours.  Depending on where you look you will find different answers for how long a bottle is good for once LO starts eating it.
Once frozen milk is thawed it cannot be refrozen.  I think you are suppose to use thawed milk with 24 hours, but once heated you have 4 hours.
If there is an untouched never heated bottle of fresh milk at the end of the day that can be frozen.

Yeah I have heard the same, but wasn't sure. Thanks for weighing in! I'd rather not reheat the milk more than once. I'm thinking the best way will be to fill 4 bottles with 3 oz of milk and then have a separate container with more milk in case he needs more... I'm going to be away from him for about 9.5-10 hours.

This all sounds accurate and what I've read/researched, too. Is this the guidelines you've stuck to? Thank you!

I haven't! Thanks for the suggestion!

We will re-heat bottle 1 more time if it's not finished. Did the same with my daughter and never had an issue.
May som only drinks a bottle cold so we will give him the same one for 2 days in a row.
You really don't have to be super strict with it.

My daughter never took more than 3 ounces at a time, even at a year old.
May son still isn't a bottle fan and only drinks 3 ounces total when I'm gone.
  •  Wondering how long everyone's breast-feeding sessions are at this point in the game!  Sometimes I feel like little one is finished after just 5 minutes but then sometimes I feel like she's just distracted at 5min.

Calvin also varies in time. I try not to get impatient by reminding myself that he's human like me - Sometimes I want to scarf down dinner and sometimes I want to have a leisurely meal. If hes taking a long time due to continual distractions though, I try to move to a less stimulating area. Not always possible (like when he gets hungry at the mall), but sometimes it helps him.

ETA- I forgot to actually answer your question! My LO usually takes about 15 minutes total.

The  jet effect I have going on has always kept our sessions short and sweet. So about 5-7 minutes without distractions. 15 minutes if anyone dares speak while his majesty is eating. He will stare them down them go back to eat.
  • @rubirubi89
that makes me feel better. I have an oald and an oversupply (double pumping while at work has keep that an issue) so hearing another mom has such short sessions sets my mind at ease!

  • I dare someone to tell me he's not getting enough that fast  @smnewby
  • Grayson usually nurses in 5 to 10 min if he is all business. Although he likes to look around, or look at me and smile or stare at other distractions in which he can take 20+min.
  • My DD never nurses for more than 5 min. We are still waking 4-6 times a night to accommodate for her grazing. It's exhausting.

My son was waking sooo much during the night so I have started topping him off after his nursing session before bed with formula(4-6 oz) and now he is sleeping 5-7 hours before waking to nurse again!!! ☺️

We have a weight gain problem so while I've considered this, I worry about cutting her calories even more by adding formula and then skipping a feeding. My pediatrician wants me to skip nighttime feedings and says DD will make up for it during the day, but I'm struggling with this.
  • Lo wakes up around 6 times a night to eat still. And it usually takes him 5-10 minutes for a full feed. Its nice to not have to have a 45 minute feed!

We're feeding non stop from 7-1030/11 ish every night. I top her off with a couple ozs of pumped b- milk from a bottle and it seems to keep her full longer. I can't imagine trying to skip night time feedings. How would that even work?

I would never try and skip a night feeding, if baby is hungry, they are still small and need to be fed!!! The last couple times even with a top up before bed my guy has been waking every 3-3.5 hours to eat again... And I feed him.

She wants us to move baby out of our room. I'm just not there yet. We took advice from  @doodleoodle in another thread and eliminated the last nap of the day and turned it into bedtime instead. DD sleep 4.5hrs straight last night and 7hrs straight tonight! She does also have a cold though so not sure if it's her being sick that's causing her to sleep more or what but I'll take it. Her appetite has also been awful because of the cold so I'm glad we are going into the weekend where I'll be with her 24/7. Hope your sleep improves soon.

  • I just wanted to let any mom's who had to cut out dairy know that Ben & Jerry's has dairy free ice cream available now and it's delicious :)
  • DS nurses about 10 minutes.

The sleep regression hit us hard! We were also having issues with 6ish night wakings. This past week we've started waking DS @ 7am and putting him to bed no later than 7pm (asleep by 7). It has helped quite a bit! He has gone back to sleeping 3-4 hour stretches.
  • Wanted to share - I traveled for work this week to Portland (about as far as possible from home in the US) and pumped on the airplanes/between meetings/stored milk the whole time, and successfully brought it home! It's stored in the freezer now. Thank you to all the moms who had great advice for me on here. I was definitely overwhelmed by the idea of traveling/pumping, but with a little planning and organization, it's totally doable! I feel like super mom!

Anyone have supply issues and find something that worked well for them?

We all got sick over the past few weeks and I think it impacted my supply. DD has also tripled (!!) the amount she eats during the day when I'm at work. I was able to pump 12-16oz a day (depending on # of pump sessions), but now I can barely pump 3-4oz in 3 sessions. I talked to two different LC's and am giving it through the weekend before I start to supplement (still have a small freezer stash).

My plan is - 3600mg fenugreek per day, 3x mother's milk tea, oatmeal in the morning, pumping or nursing at least every 2hrs, power pumping for 1-2hrs/day.  Also considering renting a hospital grade pump but I was going to give the supplements and power pumping a couple days.

Any other thoughts on what worked for you would be appreciated. I've been very lucky to go 21wks with barely any breastfeeding issues. I just hope I can recover from this.
  • The LC I talked to suggested hand expressing after pumping to help empty. I think it really helped. I did everything you mentioned and it worked for me to get my supply back up. Then I got the flu and it all tanked and I wasn't willing to put in that much time at work again to get it back up. But when I did it really worked! Good luck!

This happened to me a couple weeks ago, though I think it was stress related. I added a couple high protein snacks each day, and really increased my water intake. I went back to pumping every 3 hours ( I was doing ever 4 to 5). In the evenings and weekend I power pumped. It has taken about 1.5 weeks to recover, it is still not where it was but I have not had to pull from the freezer since Monday.

I also changed the membranes on my pump and increased the suction some which seems to have made a huge difference
