I go back to work in 2 weeks. LO was taking a bottle of breastmilk like a champ. Then all of a sudden she is refusing the bottle this week. Any ideas? What bottle are you guys using?

She seems to like the playtex bottle with the drop in liners. Which sucks because I hate the wastefulness of them. Last night she also took an ounce from a tomee tipee, and I just ordered a Mam bottle as she loves those pacifiers.
Reading about all of your experiences has me thinking about when I go back to work. It's not for another month but LO has regressed and now is not taking the bottle so well, especially from me. How did you teach your LOs to take the bottle and how long did it take? Just curious if I should start now. Was thinking of giving her all her day feedings from the bottle (the same hours she will be in daycare).

I would breast-feed her first thing in the morning and in the evenings and overnight But all daytime feed her with a bottle
edit: I don't know why but my response ends up in the quote box. I guess I can't change that

With DD- who hated the bottle with a passion- we did one bottle a day. She wouldn't take it if I was in the house. For a while there she screamed if she saw a bottle! So one practice bottle with only an ounce or 2 in it when she wasn't hungry helped to get her used to it. DS is more laid back. I go back in 3 weeks and he's taken a bottle only 3 times. We've only tried 4 times though. I would say 1 bottle a day is enough to get them used to it. No matter what, being away from you is going to be a huge adjustment so expect there to be some bumps that first week or 2. For my kids the way they are held, or not held, is what's made the difference. The type of bottle has r mattered. DD didn't want to be touched. DS wants you to hold him like you're nursing him. So play around with how you hold them too.

I gave one bottle a day for two weeks before returning to work. I had to experiment with bottles though: make sure he wasn't gagging, choking, flow was slow enough, nipple soft enough because he wouldn't drink at all at first.
Question: anyones baby ever have a latch regression? My daughter latched like a champ for months after initially having a hard time of it. A few days ago (3 months old now) she began taking the nipple like normal but then pulling off and sucking just the nipple back in on her own. I assume that latch isnt stellar because I can hear her smacking and its sore like never before. If i take her off and relatch her properly she turns around and does the same thing again.
I only mind because she is now not emptying my breast and has to be moved to the other one each feed (used to be a strictly one boob per feed girl) her poos are a tad green today too and i am thinking this is all leading to a foremilk imbalance. Could use some advice. Anyone else experience this?
edit to include that she is not unhappy or upset. I dont think its an overactive let down or anything like annupset stomach. its almost more like she is making a game of it or exploring the ability to control her environment.

Zeke does the same thing. I've been relatching him when he tries to suck in just the nipple - especially since when he's smacking his lips he's sucking in air and then gets uncomfortable gas bubbles. If he keeps doing it, I'll go back to the nipple shield so he's not destroying my nipples.
But it he's been doing the same thing of wanting to eat off both boobs at most feedings. I agree it seems to be some wanting to control because he'll cry if he's not on the boob he wants. I've given him a bottle a few times when I'm tired of trying to get him to eat well or tired of having to switch back and forth between boobs
@smnewby mine does the same thing. I've found it tends to be associated with either 1) what I assume are wonder weeks because she is all around cranky in which case she gets over it in a few days and I'll sometimes pump and feed a bottle for a feed or two to save my nipples; or 2) she's overstimulated and can't focus, if this is the case I just go to a dark and quiet room and get her to relatch, usually solves the problem.
Mine always feeds from both sides so I'm not sure what to tell you on that front, except maybe try block feeding?
I've heard that a BF baby will never take more than 4-5 oz in a sitting. Does anyone know if this is in fact true? I have some unopened 9oz bottles because I just assumed LO would eat more as she got older. I'm just wondering if I should exchange these bottles for smaller ones for when she starts daycare. As of now, she only eats about 3-4oz but she mostly gets nursed.

DS never took a bottle over 5 oz. Some times while pumping I did wish I had bigger bottles because I have one super boob that produces 75% of my milk and would overflow the 5oz bottle.
My pedi said that she very rarely sees a BF baby consistently take more than 5oz a bottle.
@MargaretC5 I also have a super boob, I just swith the bottle in the middle of pumping so they I don't over flow.
I do the same thing, but when pumping and working at the same I forgot to keep an eye on it a few times. Not a big deal but if I had a bigger bottle I would of used it.

Anna is bottle fed breast milk . She eats 6 oz every morning and 5 oz the rest of the time . She's a pig lol

My DD never took more than 4 ounces. Most days I was at woke she drank 4 bottles that were 3 ounces each. I've heard the same and it was true for us last time.
For those moms who work outside the home, how much milk are you giving your care providers for your LO? I feed my baby directly from the breast at 6am, then I am home to feed him at 6:30pm. He seems to want about 24oz during the time I'm away. I'm really struggling to keep up with that. It makes me stressed every day to try to attain that number. Does anyone have any advice? Is 2oz/hr about how much your babies eat?

I breastfeed around 6am and then head to work until 5:30. While gone I fill 3 bottles with 6 oz each. lo tends to drink every 3 hrs and ranges from 4.5-6oz per feed. When I get home I feed her and then based on her cues feed her every 2-3hrs until 8:30-9:00 when she goes to sleep. She also tends to wake up for a middle of the night feed although not always.
Maybe if you add a feeding in the night or clusterfeed before bed lo wont need as much during the day? Thats my only thought!
@natalknitter15Every guideline I've seen says 1-1.5 oz per hour is enough for a breastfed baby. So, 24-36 oz per 24 hours. Is the care provider using paced feeding?
@natalknitter15 when I went back to work after DS the most he ever took at day care was 20 oz, but that was not until he was a few months older then our babies are now. He was in DC 6:30 am to 5:30pm. If I remember correctly we started at 12-15 oz then worked up to 20 as he got older. Is DC saying he is finishing every bottle? Is it possible they are dumping a little from each bottle if your LO does not finish it? If he does eat it all, maybe try sending bottles with an oz less to see if he is just eating it because it is in the bottle and easy to get. You could always send the extra oz separately just in case he does want it. One other thought, when is the last feed at DC? Are they sending him home hungry or full? If they can time his last feed so you can nurse him when you get home it might help, since that would be less milk you need to pump.
My MIL takes care of my son on most days during the week. I have a great relationship with her. We talked about paced feeding weeks ago and I have no reason to think she's not doing this... But I guess I wonder. I think I'll bring it up at the next pick-up. I give my milk to her in a quart jar every morning, so portioning out bottles differently wouldn't really apply in our situation... But I think it's a good idea to ask her if she's dumping milk he doesn't finish. Every ounce is precious... I believe she gives him 4oz bottles and she says he seems to be hungry every 1.5-2hrs. He also eats very frequently on the weekends when I'm home to breastfeed, so I suspect she's right that he's hungry (not just tired, bored, wet, etc.). I wonder if increasing the bottle size to 6 or 8oz would keep him satisfied for longer and reduce the overall amount? I never thought breastfeeding would be so complicated! It seems so simple at first glance (just feed the baby) but it gets so complicated when you actually do it in the real world...

I did that for my mil at first but i noticed when she poured the milk into bottles she wasnt scooping the fat/"cream" off the sides of the larger container. Maybe check and see if she is doing that. All the cream adds so many calories and cuts back on the volume lo needs.
I first noticed it because lo was getting greener stools kind of like when i had an oversupply and a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance.

I would ask your care provider to try something else first before feeding them. My husband is home with the kids while I work and with DD he fed her at every cry and whine. He didn't know what else to do. As a result she would eat 2 ounces an hour, easily. Once he learned coping skills and what her cries were about she starting taking more like an once an hour. She typically drank 3 to 4 bottles that were 3 ounces each.
I go back in 2 weeks so we will see how much DS takes.

^ I agree with that. I would actually send premeasured bottles instead of a big quart so the ratio of fat is even throughout each bottle. Last time I pumped right into bottles or bags and that's how they went into the fridge to be given to DD. I will do the same again. Mixing it all together and then taking a little out at a time might be throwing off the balance.

On a "long" work day I feed him at 7:00am and get back home at 5:15pm to a hungry baby. During that time the most he'll have is 16oz.
Thanks, ladies! I guess I should add that another piece of this puzzle is that my LO isn't gaining as fast as the growth charts say he should. He was born in the 95th percentile and has now dropped to the 29th percentile at 3 months. His pediatrician is not worried and says that he shows zero signs of inadequate nutrition and that it's likely genetic.
But I can't help but feel frustrated - I feel like I'm giving him so much milk and he still isn't gaining. I thought that maybe you ladies would say that 2oz/hr is what your LOs are consuming as well, but it seems like that is quite a lot. I'm hesitant to cut back on his milk (even though it's majorly stressing me to make this much) because what if that slows his growth even more? I wonder if a fat imbalance could be to blame? I never considered that the quart jar could be messing with things...
I did see a lactation consultant, but she just said over and over again that I need to "feed the baby on demand." It was a really frustrating, disheartening appointment.

I'm not usually one for weighted feeds but they might help you to know how much LO is eating. Maybe see a new LC and have they weigh him before and after you feed him. That way you'll know about how much he's eating in a sitting.

I also felt really frustrated when meeting with my lactation consultant, everyone says they are so helpful but I didn't feel that way!
I'm in a similar situation as you, bebe drinks more milk than I can usually pump while I'm at work and I have a feeling @Pontot31 hit the nail on the head as far as caregiver jumping to feeding when they get fussy instead of trying other things. My husband stays home with her while I'm gone and at first he would always jump to giving her a bottle when she cried whether that was what was wrong or not. He's getting much better at distinguishing her needs now and also pacing her bottles so I've seen a little bit of a decrease in the amount I need to pump. So that might be part of it.
I was feeling so stressed out about pumping enough, then found a few cans of formula I got as free samples and started mixing a little bit of formula in with her breast milk bottles and that has really taken the stress out of it because I don't feel this immense pressure to pump x amount of ounces of milk per day. I started pumping more when I did that I'm sure because I was less anxious about it. Just something to think about, it's always ok to supplement if you need to!!
Have any of you ladies had the flu? I feel like my milk supply has taken a big hit. I still feed him just as much and I am especially careful to be drinking plenty of fluids and getting enough calories. What gives?

I didn't have the actual flu, but I had a stomach virus. My supply dropped for a little more than a week. Then, it seemed to be back to normal. I hope you experience the same!

That sucks. I had a wicked cold that lasted for a week and my supply plummeted towards the end despite fluids and keeping up my calories. I pumped to feed lo more and to help get my supply back up. Took a few days before everything was back to normal. Was very stressfull and I am sure that the stress didnt help things either!
Make sure you arent taking any decongestants or download the lactmed app to make sure any meds you are taking wont affect your supply.
So my LO has decided that he is now a picky eater as in he really only likes my left boob and keeps pulling off the right! He finally ate from the right last night at 2am after about 6 hrs of no eating from that side, but since it was 2 am he didn't completely finish it so now I've got a blocked duct (at least that's what it feels like)...has anyone else experienced this? Anything I can do?

Thank you for the heads up on the app. Only taking ibuprofen to be safe.

For blocked ducts I think the best thing is to massage the hard spot, even though it hurts! Keep offering that side to lo and massage while they are eating to get the block out. If he's refusing make sure you pump at feeding time. I found massaging my boob while in a hot shower and manually expressing some helped the most

A heating pad is helpful too, and a handheld massager if you have one.
I just got back to work and am only pumping 2oz 3 times during the work day and LO eats about 14oz at daycare so he gets formula to makeup the difference, but now I feel like he hates breastfeeding bc he gets frustrated it's not as much as fast as the bottle! Feel like I can't win sometimes
