I just got back to work and am only pumping 2oz 3 times during the work day and LO eats about 14oz at daycare so he gets formula to makeup the difference, but now I feel like he hates breastfeeding bc he gets frustrated it's not as much as fast as the bottle! Feel like I can't win sometimes
What nipple flow do you use on the bottles? A 0 flow or premie nipple should help because he'll have to work to get milk out of that too

Last week I started supplementing with formula because I exclusively pump and the schedule is just not working out for us. Elliot gets breast milk at home and we take a formula bottle with us when we're out. I can't drag my pump with me everywhere, and staying home 24/7 is not an option for us. Anyway, she seems extra fussy on breast milk. She had this problem for a while I just didn't know how bad it was until we started formula. When she was EBF I thought she had reflux. She was super gassy, screamed after every bottle, arched her back, didn't want the bottle etc. She took to formula right away. No problems, eats just fine. I never hear her stomach rumbling around when she eats formula. She's just fine. Has anyone experienced this? Could it be what I was eating? Or medication I'm on? I've always thought breast milk was always easier to digest and the better choice. Could it be because formula is thicker? Maybe it stays down better? I'm just confused about what to do now. I want her to have the benefits of breast milk but I don't want her to be sick.

I'd talk to her doc about it, maybe she does have an allergy or something. I mix formula and breast milk 50/50 for our bebe when I'm at work because I don't pump enough to do all breast milk. I feel like this is the best of both worlds. I know she's getting enough to eat and she also gets a lot of nutrients and antibodies from my milk. Maybe that's an option?
DS is 10 weeks old, and we've been BFing just fine, and then for some reason this week, he starts fighting with my boob and crying during BF sessions. I think he's getting enough since he has plenty of wet and dirty diapers, and he's also been spitting up after most feedings. I'm going to call the pediatrician, but wanted to know if anyone has experienced this before.

Anyone's LO still eating every two hours during the day? I've tried feeding longer and lengthening times between feedings by playing and distracting as best I can but the minute it's past the hour and a half mark after a feeding he goes into major grump mode until he eats. Any tips or advice on this?

Mine eats around every 2 hours, sometimes 1.5 hours! She also sleeps very well at night, so I think she's making up for not eating at night.
@SoFlaMommie1128 my LO was doing that a few weeks ago and I finally figured out that she was full and wanted to keep sucking and would get mad when milk kept coming (I have oversupply). Now when she starts fussing, I pop a pacifier in her mouth and let her snuggle up against my boob and it usually calms her. Then she can comfort-suck all she wants and doesn't get a mouth full of milk. If he's having normal diapers and is spitting up, it could be he's full, but wants to keep sucking.

Yup, my LO gets fussy like clockwork every 1 hour and 45 minutes. Like you, we've tried feeding more milk (during bottle feeds) and paced feeding and every possible method of distraction. My LO has never taken a pacifier - He gives me the most heart-breaking look of betrayal whenever I try! At this point, I've just accepted that that's how his little body runs.

DS eats every two hours during the day. At daycare he takes 3oz every two hours a day home he BF's every two hours. At night he eats every 3 hours. ShianeNicole said:

My son was doing this. I noticed that when I cut down on dairy he did it less. It could be a dietary thing in your part. Not necessarily dairy though.
So my right Breast is always like the size of a softball while my left is like a baseball...is there anyway to help them become a little more even??
My friend, who sells bras, says no woman has a perfectly even pair unless she paid for them. Probably not much you can do, just keep feeds as even as you can.
Had to have an MRI this morning, with gadolinium contrast. First of all, want to put out there for anyone else who has to have it: while the MRI tech said to wait 24 hours before nursing again and to pump and dump in the meantime, Kiddo's pediatrician said that was extreme, the half life of it is only 1.6 hours, and it's labeled an L2, which means most likely safe. I gave it 2 hours just to be sure.
Second, oh good grief what a morning! Kiddo has decided that frozen and thawed breastmilk is no good, we had a massive scream fest while she refused it despite being super hungry. I caved and gave her formula, she was still pretty upset about it not being boob, but took most of the 2oz bottle and stopped crying till my 2 hours were up. So looks like I may need to dump the current freezer stash (wasn't much anyway) and either pump a 'fresh' bottle if I go anywhere or keep formula on hand (which I'll probably do anyway). This is going to make my weekend-long work trip in June interesting for DH (at least she'll have started solids by then!)

I hope all turns out okay with your MRI. I had to have one once and it made me feel so claustrophobic - Ugh.
It seems such a shame to throw away your stash, no matter how small! Did you try the milk at different temperatures? My baby has phases where he seems to only want warm milk, then the next week he wants cold, then the next week back to warm! I have no idea why... If he really does refuse it, I wonder if you could donate it to a mama in need? Or as a last resort, I've heard that a milk bath for the baby is great for their skin.

I haven't tried it myself, but I've heard that adding a drop of alcohol-free vanilla extract to milk that's been frozen helps some kiddos take it.

I mean, I'll give it another chance, but when I opened the bottle it smelled like freezer burn, so I don't blame her for refusing it! It was room temp when I tried, but DH had tried an hour earlier with it warmed up. I could donate it but if the rest also smells like freezer burn, I'm hesitant. Also, at least half of it was pumped while I was on morphine, so it could just taste funky from that alone. Could also be the way I stored it, I just put the bottles strait in the freezer with the storage lids on. I have a few bags from my starter kit, I'll try pumping in to those to see if it cuts dwn on freezer burn taste/smell.

Never heard that. Might give it a try before I dump the lot.
@AmoLovesAud you could also try mixing half freezer half fresh. I hear that's supposed to help.
SadlyI think I have the same problem with my freezer stash where it seems to have gone bad in the freezer. Fortunately (or unfortunately really), little man has decided he doesn't want to take a bottle from anyone but me, which really defeats the purpose of the bottle, so I haven't had to dip into my freezer stash in a while since we keep a little in the fridge to keep trying to get him to take (or for when my boobs need a break)

Don't dump it! Smell it- does it smell soapy? That's a lipase imbalance. All you have to do in the future is scald your milk before freezing. As for your stash- donate it! Many babies will still drink high lipase milk. You can donate mom to mom on sites like human milk for human babies. Most states or even cities have Facebook pages.
To those who have had success with thawing frozen milk, do you find the frozen milk stored in the bags is better, or in plastic bottles? I've been building my freezer stash but haven't used any yet, so I don't know how LO will react to it.

I have found success with bags. I only tried freezing a bottle once though. I'm a fan of mixing the frozen with the fresh as well.
Hey ladies, I've been lurking here for a while, and I really need some support... I hate nursing. I have a fast flow, so lo keeps a shallow latch so my nipples are sore, we both have thrush I can't clear up even after like 3 weeks on Nystatin, and I have larger breasts and haven't figured out how to keep them close enough to his mouth without holding them, so I have to use both hands to nurse, and he often just chews on me and it makes me feel gross... Lo is 12 weeks old, and is exclusively fed breast milk, either from me or a bottle...
I hate that I hate to nurse, it makes me feel like a bad mom; I can't figure out how EPing is supposed to work (do you pump before your baby needs to eat? If you give a bottle then pump, or vice versa, aren't you ALWAYS either feeding or preparing to feed your baby??) and I feel like if I give formula I'm a failure... It isn't that I think formula is bad, I just had a goal to ebf until he's one, and now it's just so much harder than I expected, this being my first baby...
Sorry for being an attention whore, like I said I'm just hoping for some support, and maybe some suggestions on how to make this suck less so I can meet my goal without hating myself and resenting my baby?

I like freezing in bags because they thaw much faster than bottles. I just put the bag directly from freezer to warm water. DS did not care if it was frozen in a bag or bottle (this time I have only frozen in bags).

Since you have a few different issues going on it may be helpful to meet with a LC, but I will try to offer what advise I can (as I am sure other moms will also).
As far as a BF goal, maybe try setting a smaller goal, like BF for 4 months, that once you meet that you can set a new goal if you want. Just like if you are trying to lose weight, it is less overwhelming to set an initial goal of losing 5 lbs then setting your final goal in the beginning.
For the fast flow, have your tried positions with the baby on top of breast (like him laying on you while you are reclining ), so gravity does not pull the milk to him. You could also try expressing some milk before feeding so the baby does not get the milk at full force.
If your baby does latch correctly sometimes, I would unlatch him when he moves to a shallow latch and relatch him correctly. While he may get annoyed if you keep making him relatch it is better for both of you. If he never latches correctly I would see a LC.
And a happy mom is more important than BF. If BF is not working for you than do not feel like it is something you have to do. Our pedi refered to BF as extra credit, great if you can do it but nothing to worry about it you cannot. BF does not have to be all or nothing, you can do any combination of BF, pumping or formula that works for you and your baby.
There is another EP thread you may find helpful also for that option.

All of this^^ I could have written it myself, just swap out DS with DD. I froze one bottle and did not care for it. The bags are much easier. It didn't make a difference to DD. It's really just about mommy's preference.

Sorry you're having such a hard time! Also ftm here and I had no idea how hard breast feeding would be! I would also suggest seeing a lactation consultant like pp said, some people find them very helpful, and hopefully the hospital where you delivered has one on staff that issurance covers. If not, I know at my hospital the nurses were all very well trained in breastfeeding and encouraged me to come back to l&d if I had any questions or concerns at any time, so that might be an option. There's also la leche league all over the country, a support group might help. Also like pp said, check out the ep thread as there were lots of helpful hints there. I know I saw a thread (I think it might have been O15 though) where a woman posted pictures of how she feeds her baby and pumps at the same time so that she is not, like you said, consumed with feeding tasks all day.
In the end as long as you are feeding baby you're doing a great job, doesn't matter how! Hope things get a little better!!

I had a problem with yeast as well! I followed Dr. Newman's candida protocol to clear it up. The grapefruit seed extract (GSE) helped immensely. You have to be super careful to not keep spreading the yeast... Making sure to boil all pump parts after use, frequently washing hands, and washing bras or any clothing that touches breasts daily in hot water. Also- baby must be treated with an anti fungal as well or you guys will just keep passing it back & forth to each other.
Hi ladies! Does anyone have experience pumping while on an airplane? I'm going to need to go to Portland, Oregon (from Florida) for work and all the flights are 8-9 hours (with layovers. Each leg of the flight is 3-4.5 hours. I'm just worried about being in so much pain by the time we land.

No experience but have you tried to contact the airline? They may have a room for you to pump on the airplane. Bring your battery pack for your pump.

I saw an article about a delta flight where a mom who needed to pump was given a seat in first class so she could plug her pump in and have privacy. Clearly you should book with them
...only suggestion I have would bring a nursing cover if you're worried about showing boob

And make sure to call the airline to find out policy on bringing breastmilk back. I believe you can use a cooler and dry ice, usually, but there is a limit to how much ice you can put in the cooler. Or, if you don't want to bring it back, find a local Human Milk for Human Babies group on Facebook and donate it to another mom.
I picked up a manual hand pump to leave at work. I know there is going to be a day that I'll forget my pump and be stuck without it so I have it as a just in case thing. It's not as quick as a double electric pump, but it could be an option to use on a plane. Good luck!
Anyone else have a sudden supply drop? I was getting a great amount of milk but these past few days my supply has been so little! I haven't changed anything In my diet or decreased my water intake. DS seems like he's not getting enough either and both breasts feel completely drained all the time...I'm starting to get real nervous...I started drinking mothers milk tea today so hopefully it helps...any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated
I was prescribed a low dose of Zoloft today for PPA. My doctor and the pharmacist told me I could take it, but to pump 7-9 hours after I take it, because that's when the highest levels will show up in the hind milk. Has anyone ever done this? I finally get put on something for my anxiety and I feel like having to make sure I'm home to pump and dump is probably going to stress me out even more.

Same thing has happened to me these last few days! My boobs haven't been feeling full and he seems hungry a lot. I just keep letting him nurse so that he signals to my body to make more milk. I also made lactation cookies (they were for a friend but I had to try them to make sure they were okay) and this morning after Zeke ate I pumped an extra 4 ounces. That was a huge relief! I started to feel empty again as the day went on and tonight DH and I went out and I didn't pump till I got home (so no milk emptying for 6 hours) and I got 8 ounces out... Not sure if that's a good amount or not since I don't usually go 6 hours without emptying except at night when Zeke nurses and I have no way of measuring how much he eats at midnight feedings.
I have no idea if this post was helpful. But keep trying! And if you're willing to buy the special ingredients, the lactation cookies seem worth it! I plan to make a batch for myself!

@mrsaragonI don't taken any meds BUT I've been sick and had to get an antibiotic twice since DS was born. Both times I went to urgent care and was given incorrect information by the doctor who treated me in regards to breastfeeding. One doctor told me not to nurse while i had mastitis...

Re: Breastfeeding Questions/Support/Learnings Go Here
@SoFlaMommie1128 my LO was doing that a few weeks ago and I finally figured out that she was full and wanted to keep sucking and would get mad when milk kept coming (I have oversupply).
What dramaphile said. I keep a pacifier within arms reach whenever BFing.
FilmFreak933 said: Never heard that. Might give it a try before I dump the lot.
As for your stash- donate it! Many babies will still drink high lipase milk. You can donate mom to mom on sites like human milk for human babies. Most states or even cities have Facebook pages.
Now Im supplements so I don't have any freeze milk
to it.
I froze one bottle and did not care for it. The bags are much easier. It didn't make a difference to DD. It's really just about mommy's preference.

Goodluck! Hope you can treat your thrush.
...only suggestion I have would bring a nursing cover if you're worried about showing boob
