Re: Breastfeeding Questions/Support/Learnings Go Here

  • Zeke decided today that he's not overly fond of the nipple shield. Which is great - I'd love to not have to deal with that silly thing. However, he's not opening his mouth wide enough to get a good latch so I don't think he's eating well and he's getting cranky. And my nipples hurt.

Tips? Ideas? I finally had him latch and eat with the shield because he was getting so frustrated. But if we don't need it anymore, that'd be great.

The LC I saw before is an hour away so I'd rather not go that far if I don't have to.

Nipple sandwich? Idk anything beyond that. Maybe ask the ladies on the breastfeeding board.

    She did...

@rachswi No ideas because I also use a shield. I'm interested in the advice you get though. Good luck!

  • @JamieA322 no, she posted it on the November 2015 Moms board. If you look under specialty groups there is an entire board dedicated to breastfeeding in which all posts are about breastfeeding.

    Got it. Sorry.
  • So yesterday I ate some bad food and ended up with stomach cramps and diarrhea. I EBF and so I kept nursing and did BRAT diet last night and breakfast this morning. LO nursed like normal all evening and today but he hasn't had any dirty diapers today. He has had plenty of wet diapers but no poop. Is it possible that this is because I had BRAT diet? When should I get concerned and call the doctor?

My pedi told me not to worry too much about poopy diapers, she said EBF babies can go days without pooping since they absorb it more efficiently than formula. My LO only poops like every 4 or 5 days. My pedi said to call if he goes longer than a week without pooping or if he ever looks/acts like he is having trouble pooping...so I guess if this isn't normal for your LO or you are concerned I would call your pedi in the am just to check, it can't hurt.

This. The hospital gave me information that this change happens around 8 weeks for some babies.

Thanks ladies. My LO is 8 weeks so maybe that's what's happening.

Pull up on his top lip and he will open his mouth and stick his tongue out. Then put your nipple inside. My sister used to have to do it when she bf.
  • Hi yes I was trying to say that I'm thinking about quitting breastfeeding as I wasn't coping . I can't hold my baby without her wanting to breastfeed. I supplement with formula . does it get easier?.when will I be able to hold her without her obsessing over my boobs. She won't take a pacifier...even when she's full she will breastfeed and spit out...
  • No questions, just need to lament somewhere. I've been hospitalized for pancreatitis, I may be here till Thursday. They provided me with a pump, plenty of bottles, and they're labeling it and taking them to the maternity ward for storage. But I hate pumping, it doesn't empty my breasts and make them feel as good as after DD feeds, and I MIIIIIISSSSS HEEEEEERRRR ;_;
  • A bit AW so I apologize.

So DD is on meds for acid reflux and they're having us do Nutramgen for 48 hours to see if she has a milk protein intolerance. Thing is- it's working, really well. DD isn't screaming every waking moment. I've been EPing but if she does have an intolerance (we're doing nothing but breastmilk tomorrow to test) then I would need to donate my whole 75 oz freezer stash and then potentially take up an elimination diet. It would take roughly two weeks of soy and lactose free diet to eliminate from my breastmilk. At this point I'm not sure if I have it in me and if the benefits of BF are worth the crazy amount of hassle and upkeep (supplements, power pumping, diet ect. ) Is there any compromise or half way on any of this or All or Nothing? Would an elimination diet definitely work? Any thoughts?

Oh no! That's a lot of handle.
I've had a few friends do elimination diets with success. One lives on and runs a dairy farm and had to give up all dairy- talk about not fair. But it did work for her.
You'd be surprised how many things have soy and dairy- you've got to read every lable.

Here's a link to another thread going on about this.

On the plus side I'm sure you'll feel a lot better yourself cutting out all that lactose. Not the same thing but I cut meat from my diet a few years back and felt like a whole new person after just a few days. I missed meat though and came crawling back after 6 months. (lost 20lbs though!) its up to you what you decide but I hope you don't feel like your LO will not be as healthy just because you don't BF, you've protected her for 2 months already and its the big picture that matters the most. Good luck!

  • how long does breast milk keep in the fridge? How long after it's out of the fridge? Also, I used my pump for the first time tonight and LO ate from one breast, I pumped the other, and then he wanted to eat again and it seemed like there wasn't a whole lot left for him. Is there anyway to avoid this? I would like to pump just once a day for a small freezer stash or if someone watches LO while I run an errand, etc. thanks in advance

Pump after you LO has finished eating off of both sides.

If you google "how long does breast milk last in the refrigerator ", you'll find your answer.
  • We've been trying to get LO to eat from a bottle in preparation for going back to work and he keeps refusing. I've tried several different bottles and nipples. He also chokes a lot when he does drink no matter the nipple size.

Anyone else have this problem? What has worked for you?

I'm worried we won't have eating from a bottle established before I go back to work.

Have you tried leaving the house/room and let someone else feed him? Sometimes they won't eat from a bottle when mom is around.

    Yes, numerous times. :(

I had googled it, and came up with several different answers.

Make sure you sit baby up as verticle as you can and make the bottle as horizontal as possible to ebb the flow. It helped our lo avoid choking. We used avent slow flow nipples.

Good luck. Its so frustrating I know! As if going back to work isnt hard enough on you.

Have tried finding a bottle that doesn't leak when you hold it upside down. When my LO first started taking a bottle he would take a break with the nipple in his mouth like when he BF and would choke when milk was still dribbling into his mouth.

I keep mine for a week in the fridge. At room temp 8 hours. In the freezer attached to my fridge for 6 months and in the deeper freezer a year.
At the end of the week any pumped milk in my fridge gets moved to the deep freezer.
I will usually re-heat a bottle up to 3 times if they don't finish.

As for pumping your body will always make more milk for the baby but might not always respond to the pump or feel like it's full. Baby should be able to draw out the mill even if you just pumped because your breasts are never truly empty.

If you leak on the side you're not feeding from look into the milk saver. You wear it on the non feeding side and it collects the milk. I've been adding 3 to 4 ounces a day to my freezer stash without pumping at all.
  • @Pontot31 wow thanks so much!! You are really helpful!

Update: Got to go home a day early (yay!) because my enzyme levels were finally low enough.  Hopefully that never happens again!  But LO had a bunch of formula while I was gone, and she tolerated taking it just fine, so that's nice to know if we ever have another emergency.  But even though she'd eaten less than an hour before I got home, the second she was in my arms she screamed to nurse.  It warmed my heart, I was worried she's gotten used to the formula bottles and didn't want to go back.

I was on morphine, so some of my pumped bottles have a touch of that in it (tried to time pumps between doses, but that first day I couldn't handle the pain for that long).  My nurse checked with the LC who said it was just fine to give her that milk, since I got morphine during my C-section, but DH said the one pumped bottle he tried to give to her, she fell asleep mid bottle and stayed pretty out for awhile!  So, we're saving those bottles for bedtime, haha.

  • @emzcat I had this problem. 1 bottle evert night at the same time. My LO screamed and screamed during the bottle and it took him an hour each time to finish 2 oz but now he takes the bottle no problem. It took 5 nights. Then I let him finish on breast.
  • Anyone else dealing with long comfort sucking? DS with Latch and eat for the first 10-20mins then he just stays on the boob for like another hour just to comfort suck. If I try and remove it from his mouth he flips out. I have tried substituting a pacifier, both shapes, and have tried putting milk on the pacifier before giving it to him. I understand that's it's comforting to him and all but it makes my nipples so raw and tender from the long term sucking. Any suggestions or advice?

Mine does the same thing. Fortunately he only does it when we're home. On Monday, my pedi suggested just keep offering the paci (and offer consistently) and eventually he'll start comfort sucking on that. But until he gets the picture, he'll be an angry hot mess. I haven't tried yet because he's already such a grumpy baby I'm considering letting it slide for now. If I really need to do something I break the latch and let him scream at me for a minute but he usually calms down shortly afterward. Otherwise I just let him suck

Have you tried different paci. We went through like 3 or 4 different brands before finding one he wold suck on for more than 5 min. I got him some mam ones the a couple weeks ago and he loves them, he will suck on it for hour+, he keeps it in for his naps and most of the night.

  • Anyone suffering from clogged ducts continuously? I have had a lump in my right breast several times. I use heat, massage it out, and try to squeeze every time I pump to ensure I pump until I'm empty. I EP and it's always just one side. I never have a problem with my left side. I always pump more on my left. After I get it out, I feel bruised for a few days. Then it's okay for another few days. Then it's back. My goal was to EP for 3 months, my LO is 8 weeks, but this is so painful. I can't sleep on that side, can't hold my LO to my chest, hurts to wear a bra. Any tips? Could it be something I'm doing wrong? Does anyone know why it could just be one side?

Are you wearing an underwire bra? I stopped getting clogged ducts as soon as I stopped wearing them. It was always the same side too.
  • speaking of bra's, what brand are you guys wearing? I got a few of the "Loving moments" brand and they suck! or do they all suck? am I destined to have saggy feeling/looking breasts until I'm through breastfeeding?

I've found the sports bra style nursing bras are the best. The other, regular style, ones are uncomfortable and make my boobs look weird and lumpy.

I like the seamless nursing bras from motherhood. They're super comfy and pretty supportive (I have big boobs).
