Re: Breastfeeding Questions/Support/Learnings Go Here

  • Question for BTDT moms: I'm a STM, but with my second I now am not having any engorgement at all. Baby is only 4 days old, but weight loss was minimal and he's peeing/pooping fine and my milk is in. But last time I had to sleep on a towel since I soaked the bed and I had to wear breast pads constantly for months. It's like my supply is already regulated...any one else have a similar experience? Maybe it's because I just stopped BF my son 13 months ago?

I would bet your boobs just know what to do more this time.
Mine haven't grown during pregnancy at all and I was told it was common and that we don't always get as big with the second or third baby.

I keep hearing that if you have large breasts, it's harder to breastfeed. Is this true? I have a E cup and I'm only 37+5. I'm nervous to see how big I get when my milk comes in.
I'm an E cup when pregnant. Grew to an F when my milk came in last time I never had an issue. I would hold my boob in the beginning so it didn't squish her whole face. But babies' noses are designed so they can breathe while nursing. You might have to play around with positions but it shouldn't be an issue.
This! I do find that sometimes it's easier to do the football hold than cradle her because her nose is totally clear and she just looks at me the whole time - but I'll also do cradle and hold my breast out of the way so it's a little easier for her to breathe. I think as she gets bigger we won't have that issue though....
YES!  I was also an E cup while pregnant (haven't worn a "real" bra PP yet, but I think they are fuller now that I have my milk), and sometimes the only way my LO will eat is if I use the football hold.

I also liked side lying nursing because I could relax and she could lay next to me.
  • BTDT moms? How long will it take for my nipples to stop hurting? They're fine when we get going, but the latching process is painful. I'm only 6 days PP.

    About a week.
Make sure to keep them out in the air as much as possible. Express your own milk into them and rub it in. And get some lanolin too.
I also love the gel pads you put in the fridge.

Also really make sure they have a very wide open mouth when they go to latch so they take as much in as possible.

If you're still hurting by the middle of next week I would get checked with an LC to make sure there's no tongue or lip toe issues.
But it takes time to get used to it.
  • For those of you using nipple shields for one reason or another, how long do you plan to use them? The box says for temporary use, but unless my nipples change, I will always need them. Has anyone used them throughout the entire nursing process?

I didn't get engorged at all this time. And I very rarely leak and I'm generally feeding him every 1.5 hours all day long. I've used nursing pads maybe once and he's 3 weeks old. Last time I slept on towels and had to wear 3 shirts just to go out in public because I would soak through if I went more than 2 hours without nursing. It's nice to not constantly worry about leaking everywhere.

Baby just wants to sleep! Any ideas besides undressing/dressing her, tickling feet, changing diaper, putting colostrum on her lips? Trying them all she just doesn't want to nurse, just sleep! Haven't nursed in 5 hours.

Eta have also tried switching sides and going from front hold to football hold.

Have you tried a wet washcloth or using a wipe? At first that was the only thing that would wake mine up when she was sleeping so deeply!

My little man was falling asleep a lot during feeding and the lactation consultant at the hospital showed me how to like take your finger and put it in the shoulder blade area and with the tip of your finger kinda massage in circles. Don't dig of course but a little firm. When he starts to fall asleep I do it and he starts feeding again. She said you have to change it up because they will get used to it and still fall asleep but it's been working well for us.

Also, the lansinoh gel soothies are only 6.79 on Amazon. Those things are a gift from heaven. I had to have my husband get some at Walmart cuz I couldn't wait 2 more days for Prime. They were 10$ but I'm cheap so I like to save where I can.
I highly suggest having two pairs so you can always have a cold pair!

ETA: oops I thought you meant she was falling asleep during feedings.

The only thing that worked for us for the first week was changing LOs diaper. She gets pissed, Wakes up, and realizes she's hungry. Also (recent development) burping her after she falls asleep has the same affect.

    Thinking of you!!

We had the same issue. I would try everything you mentioned and same result, sleeping baby. I would just wait and try again a half hour or hour later. While waiting I would not hold her or swaddle her.
Honestly for us one day she just started being more awake and alert, it was about day 11 for us.

Thanks for the finger tip suggestion. My LO has jaundice and is so sleepy that feedings are a huge challenge and he's lost more weight than he should.

My LO latched fine for about the first 5 days then decided my nipples were poison to her. She screams when I try to latch her. She had lost more than 10% body weight and wasn't having enough wet diapers so I had to start pumping and bottle feeding. She was also very jaundice and we spent the first week home going daily for bili blood work and weight checks. Well we went to the ENT on Thursday and she had a lip tie that they snipped. She now latches a little better. We are struggling with her mouth just being too tiny for my nipples. I'm exclusively pumping and we are still trying to latch every feeding. Pedi thinks that when she gets a little bigger she'll get it. This has all been hard for me because I exclusively breastfed my son for a year and was looking forward to doing the same with this one so fingers crossed she gets it soon!

Totally relate to latch and size versus baby as This was an issue for me. We have to use a shield each time as she couldn't open her mouth wide enough/ seems a tad lazy. 15 days in we still use it but I at times can get her to latch without it. I'm hoping as she gets older I can continue to phase it until it's gone completely.

My pedi suggested I stay away from the shields and just keep trying to latch her. My LO is 16 days old so just a day ahead of yours! Everything I have read says almost all babies latch by 6 weeks. That feels like a life time from now but it at least gives me hope!

  • Thanks for the suggestions ladies.

@coffeymg I did try the cold washcloth, that did work!

I think I just need to do a mixture of all the suggestions, and hope she comes out of this sleepy funk sooner than later.
I was gonna say more but I forgot and baby is occupying my time! Thanks again gals.

Mine's 11 days old and I've had the same problems with her being really sleepy while feeding, she's gotten a little better, but I too have just been using a combo of all those things, breast compressions work pretty well too once she's latched.

On another note, I've noticed a lot of ladies taking about pumping and bottle feeding... I started pumping to hopefully up my supply and so that my husband can help with feedings, and I get like nothing... Seriously anywhere from a few drops to 20ml. I know pumping is not always a great indicator of supply. I'm just wondering for other people who have had this experience, do you get more the longer you pump?

Pumping 20 ml at this point is great. If your pumping after a feed it is normal for the amount to get to vary based on what your LO ate. Try hand expressing also. It can take a while to get the hang of, but it works better than the pumping sometimes.

  • Super long shot on any answer on this one;I'll be posting here as well as Mayhaps another speciality thread in hopes of seeing if anyone else has experience but I'm told it's farely rare . So throughout my pregnancy I had a oral pregnancy granuloma which had to be removed twice. The first was the size of a small pea on my gum and the second time I had to wait until after delivery as it was too close and my periodontist didn't want to risk infection. Five days after my C-section he removed it (again by cauterizing) as it was a size of a quarter and had began to cause shifting in my teeth. It was moving to the roof of my mouth. Unfortunately, it's back again as he warned me it could be because I'm nursing and the hormones that my body creates to do so. Likewise if I take any form of hormonal birth control it could come back (small potatoes there- Other methods work).
I truly honestly don't want to give up breast feeding- to me it's crucial bonding and healthy for baby, but these removals are getting expensive and when it does get large, it gets painful. I know formula is an option but to me breastfeeding is preferred and again, very important to me. Curious if this has happened to anyone else here and what they did to alleviate/ treat? I might have him try one last time to try and get the root system and graph the gum if needed. Long shot for an answer or others having similar experience, but thought I'd try.

Omg are you able to keep it together during the bili test? My son has had it done twice (after hospital) and I cried harder than he did. To make matters worse they couldnt get enough blood both times so I have to take him back again next week to try again. :(

The bili tests are awful but nothing like the lip tie snip! The nurses had to hold her down and I sobbed through the whole thing. At first they want me to hold her during the procedure wasn't going to happen!

  • Zeke is 2 days old and is apparently having a growth spurt because he is cluster feeding. He has basically not stopped feeding for almost 4 hours. He sucks and sucks himself to sleep but if I move (or try to move him) he wakes up again wanting more boob. This is totally fine... Although my left nipple is dying because my right one doesn't stick up well enough for him to eat easily. I'm so tired!

Working with a LC to get the right side going a little better. My nipple is flat so I'm mostly going to start off pumping to get the nipple hard enough and sticking out enough for Zeke to get in his mouth.

They also make shells that you can wear before nursing that help to pull your nipple out some.

As for growth spurts like that. Expect one every couple of days, or at least once a week for the first month or 2.
My daughter also cluster fed every night for a few hours for the first 3-4 months. It's normal.

Our babies must be on the same growth spurt, I fed mine yesterday from 4 to midnight, seemingly non stop, I knew to expect cluster feeding before, but that was crazy!
  • Breastfeeding is going great on the left side, it's a dream but on the right side is where I wanna give up and curl into a ball and cry. I have a huge scab, can't ever fully empty and often bleed each time I try to feed her. It sucks so bad because I know how perfect it is in the other side and I know what a dream it would be to have her latch on perfectly on both sides. I have several problems, one, most every time she latches on she doesn't latch properly and ends up latching onto the scab on the top part of my nipple which causes me to almost scream out in pain it hurts so bad so I try to relatch her several times and by then she's just pissed off and not even trying to open her mouth wide enough anymore. Second, on the rare occasion she does latch to where it doesn't hurt, she'll latch for a couple minutes before she starts moving her head around causing it to hurt again which is so discouraging. Often she'll turn her head down facing more towards my arm (I cradle hold her) and in the process she's twisting my nipple with her. It's so disheartening and makes me so upset because I feel like I'm failing her, she's still jaundice and this is probably a big reason why because she's basically only really feeding off of one boob.

Have you just tried pumping on that side to give it time to heal. My LO had trouble getting a good latch on my larger breast when my milk cam in, and it became irritated and red. I just pumped from that side for a day or so, and applied expressed milk until it healed.

I ended up wearing a nipple shield on the side hat got a bad blister to let it heal. Pumping made it hurt worse.
I also would play with positions so there's less friction on the scab. Try side lying or laying on you back with baby over you. Avoid whatever position you had been using and try some new ones.
  • Any tips for moving the baby from skin to skin to football hold without him getting annoyed? He's rooting and sucking his fists so I know he's hungry but because we're doing football hold right now, I can't just turn him on my chest to the boob. It still takes me a bit to get him situated and by then he's fully upset because we changed positions. Football is the only position we've successfully fed in because my breasts are so large (and my milk hasn't even come in yet!)
  • For any mama's that are having a lower supply I highly recommend holding LO if you're pumping. I tried to feed bt breast and my nipples started bleeding on day 2 so I have to pump while they heal. My supply was not enough to satisfy her but my LC suggested holding her and looking at her and even smelling her to help my milk let down easier. Swear, the 1st time I did I got double what I was getting before. So once I built up enough not to worry so much I tried pumping without holding her (just to see) and 1/2 the amount came out. The body is an amazing thing! Can't wait to start being able to feed her myself again!!

What if you tried the laying back position? It's good for large breasts too. You lay on your back or lean way back on pillows and position baby on their belly laying over your boob so they have control. You can do skin to skin that way and have his mouth right over your nipple. He might find the nipple and latch on his own that way too.

I tried a little last night and it kind of worked. He kept letting go then relatching then letting go again. But when he was latched he was sucking well.

Overall we did have a better night feeding-wise. Now to get him to sleep in his bassinet instead of on me...

Do you put him in the bassinet during the day? Our bassinet has wheels so I've been putting my son in it when I need to do some stuff and roll him around with me. I think its made it easier for him to sleep in it at night.

Football is the only position we've successfully fed in because my breasts are so large (and my milk hasn't even come in yet!)

We hadn't yet (but just got home around 3 yesterday afternoon). It's a pack and play so it doesn't move around very easily. I'm thinking I'm going to see how he does in the bouncer seat and in he is good with that but not the bassinet then we'll use the bouncer a little more. But I may try some naps in the bassinet too - that's a good idea
  • I need new nursing tank tops! I am not impressed with the two I got from Target (Gillian o'malley or whatever). They serve their purpose but they aren't very comfortable and I have a longer torso so after a couple washes they already fit weird.
Helllpppp. What are some good brands ladies?

I just got a bunch of cami tanks from walmart. They slip off my shoulder super easy and are very comfortable. I got a few nursing bras to where under them. They were only 1.68 so I hope they end up working well for bf because nursing tanks are pricey!

Regular spandex tanks work great for me. And they don't stretch out like my cotton ones do. I bought a bunch at kohls and I like them way more than my nursing tanks.
