Re: Gestational diabetes support group

  • @KRH6829 I haven't lost weight, but haven't gained any in 2 weeks either :( I feel like I should be gaining, but with cutting sugar and bad carbs that has to be natural right? I'm 28w and have only gained 15lb total, I meet with doctor on Friday.

On another note - What has been your highest sugar level readout? and what food caused it?
A banana with breakfast the other day set me way over (155), and today I had a sushi roll for lunch (cooked shrimp, veggie with brown rice instead of white) and a small side salad and my # was 176 after! What the hell! I guess no more sushi rolls for me. Maybe it was the soy sauce or ginger? no clue.

  • Mine was 122 at the highest - I did an experiment and ate something WAY more carb/sugar heavy than I ever eat. Haha. I had a large frosty and chili cheese fries at Wendy's! It was 120 once, after eating a big breakfast of pancakes, eggs, sausage, and hash browns. My doc said to keep it between 100-120 after meals. Everyone will probably hate me, but I haven't changed my diet at all and my numbers are always normal.

The highest I have had is 140, and I had some sprite with that meal, so I guess I was expecting a high number. You can't always be perfect. As per the dietician, I am not to have fruit or fruit juice until lunch or later in the day. She said that it would make your numbers too high. I'm surprised that sushi made your number so high!

Me too! That was at 1 hour after meal, at 2 hour it was at 102 so I didn't feel completely bad about it. But still, 176 is total danger zone from what I read. Live and learn.
  • Did the sushi have rice? I ate sushi the other day and mine sky rocketed as well.
  • @kdoak2015 yes but not a lot, and I requested brown rice. I couldn't really tell if it was brown or white to be honest, had other stuff on the outside. But even so, couldn't have been more than .5-1 cup for the whole roll? Oh well, something to look out for I guess.
  • Likely just a combination of things. Sushi rice is higher in carbs than normal rice. Unfortunately I'm on insulin but fortunately I can still have sushi just take a little extra :)
  • Rice is evil.  I miss rice.  And I miss milk.  I don't even try either.  Even a teaspoon makes me high.

Have you tried whole wheat rice? I can eat an entire cup for dinner and my sugars are normal. Bread is my enemy!

Is that the same as brown rice?   I should try that.  I haven't had any for quite a long time.  Thanks for the sugestion.
  • Yep same as brown. Give it a try!
  • So for me i can eat the same things and numbers fluctuate. I think it depends how much protein you eat WITH the rice or whatever, it's the portions and it needs to be balanced to be a good number number. I have had 120s-186 once and it just didn't make sense! It also depends on what effects your body
  • I don't really have a certain food that spikes me- but breakfast is impossible! I was having some problems with my usual breakfast, so I tried a different breakfast suggestion from my OB. 2 scrambled eggs, and (non-instant) oatmeal with cinnamon sprinkled on top. 15 carbs... and I walked for about 15 minutes after I ate. At 1 hour I was at 204! I'm supposed to be under 130 at 1-hour. I cried (a lot,) and then I walked for another half hour. My 2-hour number was 128. That was when my OB finally decided that I needed to take glyburide not just at night for fasting, but also in the morning with breakfast. It has brought my numbers down a little, but after breakfast I'm still higher than 130 on a regular basis. Tomorrow I am going to talk to my OB (again) about switching to insulin because glyburide doesn't seem to be working very well for me. Last time she said that she wanted to stick with the glyburide a little longer... but I feel like it's been long enough now.
  • Hi ladies, I am 28 weeks and I found out today that I failed my one hour test by 20+ points. I go in on Friday for my 3 hour test and we will go from there. GD runs on my dad's side of the family. I'll post more info when I get it but just wanted to introduce myself and say hello.
  • Bread/dietary carbs don't seem to bother me too much, but sugar carbs will get me. As someone else mentioned big key is how much protein I eat with it and I eat the protein first so it can slow down the other carbs. Chili with beef and beans is apparently great for my sugars (though not for my heartburn). I was able to get away with a Reese's peanut butter pumpkin when combined all that protein.
  • For everyone struggling with rice or carbs, look up "riced cauliflower" recipes on Pinterest. You can sub cauliflower for TONS of things, and it's soo good!!!

Even though it was suggested by your OB, that is probably way too carb-heavy for you at breakfast. I have trouble with my fasting sugars too, and I'm on glyburide, therefore I have to be very careful with my breakfast carbs, and save heavier ones for evening. If suggest eggs and a piece of multigrain toast with a little butter or put your eggs in a small, low-carb tortilla. I don't know about you, but I'm supposed to eat a little fat with each protein and carb, so I can put cheese on my eggs w/ the tortilla. See if you can handle that on the oral meds before switching to insulin. It may be worth it! And don't feel bad, most people who struggle w/ fasting and breakfast numbers aren't making poor food choices, they've just developed insulin resistance during pregnancy!

Thank you, but unfortunately that's pretty much what I was eating before my OB suggested switching things up. My OB doesn't want me to have any less than 15 carbs at breakfast. 2 eggs with a little fresh spinach & 1 slice multi-grain toast with butter (about 15 carbs between the bread and spinach) worked perfectly for me from weeks 12-25. I was usually 110-120 at one hour after eating. Starting week 26 my insulin resistance must have gotten much worse, because that breakfast put me in 160's without medication. Now I'm taking 2.5mg glybruide with breakfast, and in the 140's-150's at 1 hour after breakfast most days. (Plus I'm up to 5mg at night for fasting numbers- which are now usually in the 80's.) I've been on glyburide since mid-June. Several times my blood sugar has crashed into the 40's-50's even though I ate the exact same meal/snack as the day before. Other days the glyburide just doesn't seem to work at all. I'll have a random fasting number at 110 for no apparent reason, and then it will go back to the 80's the next morning. It's been frustrating.
  • Rice is high carb and the portion size is only 1/4 cup

That's terrible - hope your doctor finds a dose that works for you or switches you to insulin like you want soon!!

  • I have asked before on different threads (at least I hope they were different threads! I don't want to bug folks!), but any specific food ideas that people have? I am always looking for new GD-friendly foods and recipes to spice up my diet.

Spaghetti squash has been helpful for me. I also like unsweetened almond milk for a very low-carb drink (1g carbs per cup). I made beef stew last night with extra beef and replaced most of the potatoes I would have normally used with carrots, and my blood sugar was okay afterward. Weight watchers has a zucchini lasagna recipe that I doctored up and can eat without a problem. I have also found some almond flour recipes for protein-rich, very low carb muffins and "cookies" that have been ok for my blood sugar. I can give recipes if anybody is interested. Anybody else have ideas to share? Or store bought foods that they like and have good luck with, blood-glucose wise?
  • I love Fair Life Milk. It tastes like regular milk, but has 6g carbs and 13g protein per cup.

Is your zucchini lasagna recipe watery? Every time I've tried to make lasagna with zucchini, it turns out super watery.
  • Anyone eating low-carb bars like Atkins? I bought a box the other day  - these ones  and OMG they taste like Twix bars - really yummy and didn't affect my numbers, but would obv like to stick to whole foods.

@catherine1021 you have to drain your zucchini first, by basically sprinkling salt on the slices so it removes the water. You can find info online :) if you don't do that then yes you'll have watery mush

I have been having a Luna bar in the afternoon after someone else on this board suggested them. They are much more filling than a regular granola bar.
  • Nature valley protein bars are pretty good, but each out because they ha e a lot of fiber. They are handy to keep in a purse for when you're in a pinch.

I'd love some recipes! If you don't mind :D
  • I have lucked out some nights with whole wheat pasta (1cup). Agree that protein and fat in meals is important along with the carb allowances.

Still struggling to get the right insulin dose. Some mornings my fasting looks like it is getting better. Then the next day it jumps up 10 points higher even though I increased the dose.

My highest was this morning after breakfast - 168. All I had was egg, cheese, and some potato - yes, potato but normally that is okay in small portions and we were trying to add some carb. I freaked out and called the nurse who thinks that it was stress from work travel pushing my numbers up. Went on a brisk 20-min walk and it brought numbers down to 107.

So much frustration over these fasting numbers! Glad to hear I am not the only one. 9.5 more weeks!

I'm with you on the fasting numbers, super frustrating. I have pretty open communication with my diabetic nurse and I let her know when I've had frustrating weeks. She's so supportive and provides positive feedback.
  • Try no oatmeal and just eggs and turkey bacon or something like that.....in a low carb wrap maybe?
  • Here is the recipe for the muffins. I have been able to eat them as a breakfast or snack with good blood sugars afterward. I made them with homemade, no-sugar-added applesauce, cinnamon, diced apples, and walnuts for extra protein.

    https://powerhungry.com/2013/05/paleo-almond-flour-muffins-master-recipe/

Here is the recipe for th almond chocolate chip cookies. I only use 1/4 cup of mini chocolate chips instead of the amount they suggest. I haven't ever added the sliced almonds either. I was thinking of trying to make them with craisins instead of chocolate ships next time. Also, butter is okay in place of coconut oil, but coconut oil tastes better in these in my opinion.

    Happy snacking!

I would love other snack food type recipes if anybody else would like to share!

  • Sucks the bigger they get the more we struggle. I'm finally getting my fast and breakfast numbers in check(with insulin) of course but it's taken me 3-4 weeks to get the dosage figured out.
Being in Canada and have thanksgiving this weekend wasn't easy but I was able to manage healthy numbers with the right dose of insulin.
  • I'm asking for insulin tomorrow. I have no desire to play around with oral meds

  • Doing ok with diet modifications only right now. Hoping it'll remain that way for a few more weeks until the placenta stops growing. Protein is the key for me - amp up on steak first, baked potato doesn't present a problem. Boy if I go light on protein though I'm hosed. I'm already making my post baby dinner list...

I had a poopoo Saturday. Was really craving a sausage mcmuffin and a bit of hash brown and thought it would be safe based on nutritional info. I was so very wrong.. My 2 hour was horrible. Thankfully it dropped 70 pts in less than 20 minutes. It was scary and I felt so guilty.
  • I'm so tired of sticking my finger 4 times a day! Also having a problem with ketones in the morning. Sugar levels are all normal except that.
  • Talked to my OB about insulin because I'm struggling with glyburide. My OB said she doesn't feel my numbers are high enough for insulin. Plus she doesn't manage patients on insulin, I would have to be referred to a MFM, and my insurance has been a real pain about referrals this pregnancy. So she increased my dosage of morning glyburide again, and it actually seems to be working. I can eat 2 eggs and a slice of whole grain toast for breakfast and be under 130 after 1 hour. Fasting numbers have been good as well.

I start twice weekly NST's and a once a week BPP next Monday. I will be 32 weeks then.

  • @bbrady1031 you and me both! My fasting numbers are at the top of the in range numbers, but not over, and everything else is great! I go back the the specialist on Wednesday. My regular OBGYN looked at my numbers 3 days ago and said I could be misdiagnosed... Ugh!
  • My numbers annoy the hell out of me. I have only ever had one truly high reading BUT can't get my fasting <90 consistently. I don't believe I was that way prior to pregnancy either my fasting just seems to run more 95-110.

I've found starchy carbs and I do not get along but other than that no real triggers. I'm still poking several times per day my fingers hate me
