Re: Gestational diabetes support group

  • I'm so frustrated with it all now! I don't take any meds for my GD and my fasting numbers are amazing... Always in the 70's and 80's in the morning, which give me false hope through the day. I had a HUGE Italian dinner one night when I was on vacation last week... roasted veggies, flat bread, bruschetta, caesar salad, gnocchi and cheesecake (I gave myself a cheat meal and REALLY went with it). I checked my numbers after dinner and they were 102!!! WTF?!? It was around the two hour mark after eating the pasta and about an hour after the cheesecake. But another time I had a bowl of cereal and milk and an hour later my number was 141... I just don't understand sometimes. Anyone else cheat and get normal numbers sometimes? When I did my glucose tests I was borderline for almost all my numbers (except the 2 hour mark on the 3 hour test).

  • I had the same lunch that I have probably had eight times already on my GD diet and my numbers have always been fin afterwards...not yesterday. It's so annoying to find something that works and then all of a sudden it doesn't.

@nik6499 If my fasting numbers had to be below 90 I would fail almost every morning. I am usually right at 94 or 95 and I was told mine had to be at 95 or below. My fingers hate me too. Good luck!
  • From what my OB said, it's the fasting #s that are really a GD indicator and what could be a sign of a larger baby.
Thankfully my fasting #s are always in control (69-85), but it's the carbs that kill me. Still playing around to see what I can get away with, but isn't much! Lunch hour is what really gets me.

What do you have for your evening snack and what time do you have it? I would really like my fasting numbers to be a little bit lower than where they currently are. Thanks.
  • I was just diagnosed about 2 weeks ago, I'm currently almost 31 weeks along. So far, the only time I've had high numbers was after I decided to have a light yogurt and Kelloggs cereal for breakfast, even though that's one of the things that I was advised not to have. All my fasting numbers are in the 70-80 range, and 1hr after meals are between 100-120. Was told that if I needed medication it would be insulin, since the oral options are a class c drug... Hoping everyone will be happy with my numbers the way they are and that they stay low. 2 Dr's appt's the next couple of days should give me some idea of what they think. Good luck everyone :)
  • @KRH6829 he didn't really give me a schedule to follow or certain times to eat, maybe cause I was just borderline. After dinner snack is usually plain greek yogurt with fruit or small bowl of cereal, string cheese or a granola bar.

General Question - Outside of my eating "schedule" (which I found online - breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack) it is usually Ok to eat ANOTHER snack if my numbers are low and i'm hungry? My appetite is really ramping up, even though i'm trying to eat lots of protein.
  • Snack on more protein than carbs

  • Things still aren't under control for me. My fasting numbers are still hovering around 115, which is very frustrating because we switched me to a new insulin this week. Levemir. I had it one day on it where my fasting was down to 101 and I was so excited, but for the last few days it's been back up to 114, even with an increased dose. At this point I kind of want to give up on trying to fix the fasting numbers, but I know those are the most important. And of course I'm not really having any issues with my postmeal numbers. So frustrated.
  • So no medication for me yet. My fasting goal is <95 which my log shows I'm meeting 95% of the time so we are going to watch and wait and I have to avoid starchy carbs because they make me run higher

  • @bbrady1031 you and me both! My fasting numbers are at the top of the in range numbers, but not over, and everything else is great! I go back the the specialist on Wednesday. My regular OBGYN looked at my numbers 3 days ago and said I could be misdiagnosed... Ugh!

I have been thinking the same thing! I have an OB appointment tomorrow and I'm going to talk to her about them. Next Wednesday is my second appointment with the dietician. I think the first test was way off

Don't give up, keeping working on it. I know it's frustrating but it's worth it only a few weeks left.

That's good news, just keep doing what your doing!
  • I think I've hit the dreaded hormone surge.. I eat the same breakfast every day.. Normally my 2 hour # would be in the 90s. The last 2 mornings it's been in the 130s. :( Here's to finding a new regular breakfast! Boo
  • It might not be your breakfast it might just be that baby is getting bigger and your numbers are being affected.
  • As we get farther things are going to continue to change. More of us will end up on meds because the hormones

  • What is the deal with ketones? I am continuing to lose weight and based on what I read on the Internet (bad idea...I know) I bought test strips and my ketones are super high. I spoke with me diabetes educator today and she said to eat more carbs??? But then my numbers won't be ok...so I don't understand that. She didn't seem too concerned. I have an appointment with my OB on Monday and will be discussing this with her. Anyone else having issues with ketones and weight loss? What advice have you been given?
  • You have to balance your carbs, can't cut them out entirely. Make sure you are getting the appropriate amount

I am having 3 to 4 carb choices for each meal and 1 to 2 for each snack. The two times I have gone over these limits that the dietician gave me, my numbers were way too high this is why can't figure out why the diabetes educator wants me to have more carbs...I am having the recommended amount and I know that my numbers will be too high if I have more. This is so frustrating!
  • Are you eating enough fats? How many calories are you eating? You need to be sure no less than 1200 calories

  • Does hypoglycemia count as GD? Seems like my numbers have been really low and I've been weak and faint-y wayyyy more than normal. Guess I'll ask my OB at the next appt....
  • Walking helps too! I was told to walk after dinner and that has helped. I just had another appointment and am now able to check only 2x a day instead of 4x a day.

I had a growth scan ultrasound today and it looks like watching what I eat is working... DD is a peanut... 36th%!
  • Has anyone else's Doctor already mentioned c-section if baby is too big? I'm 32 weeks today and had my first growth ultrasound yesterday. Baby is already 4 lbs and 4 oz, her head is barely bigger than her very chubby abdomen, which is in the 97th percentile. I was surprised since my post meal sugars are usually very good, it's just fasting that I can't control. And I took the 3 hr glucose at 20 weeks (passed) and again at 27 weeks (failed), so it's not like it was wildly uncontrolled for several weeks - I thought I began to notice symptoms about a week or so before the second test. My OB raised my glyburide dosage and it seems to be working, but my MFM is pushing a c-section is baby hits 9lbs or her shoulders grow bigger than her head. I don't know how my OB (who will be delivering baby) feels yet, I dont meet with him again until Tuesday. I just feel like it's really early to discuss a c-section. Couldn't she have a growth spurt with my controlled sugars and thin out a bit? Any STM mom's with GD have any experience? Of course I'll discuss it with OB, but wouldn't it be better to induce at 38-39 weeks instead of keeping her in for 40 weeks and continuously exposing her to my insulin resistance, letting her get way too big and performing a c-section? I REALLY don't want a c-section, but now I'm freaked out by the risks of her getting stuck in the birth canal. My mom had GD with me and I got stuck in the canal but I was fine afterwards, I never knew it was so dangerous until now. (Apparently mom didn't either, she started crying on the phone when I told her about it - yikes, sorry mom!)

  • I just finished reading through this thread since as of yesterday I get to join the GD group. I was tested early and passed the 3 hour around 20 weeks but yesterday at 31 weeks failed the second go round of the 3 hour. Since it was the weekend, I'm still waiting to get the call, probably tomorrow, to set up meeting with the dietician. Good luck to everyone!
  • Welcome and good news is you only have 9 weeks to deal with this crappy disease. I'm in my 7th week since being diagnosed and it's gone by super fast and hasn't really been that bad!

Thanks and yes at least we only have a few more weeks! You are very correct!!
  • I think my hormones are taking over. 103 for fasting this morning :(
  • Ugh, high fasting numbers are the most stressful for me. But my doctor has said repeatedly that you can't control those. Do you know what the next step would be if they remain high? For me, it's a low dose of glyburide, apparently, which didn't sound horrible (though I'm purposely refusing to google). So much about this is about accepting the things you can and can't control, and that's what I'm really struggling with, personally. Hang in there!! Hope there's a good solution for you to help you reach those target numbers.
  • Just found out that I will be having weekly appointments in addition to my regular appointments. Is that normal?
  • I'm 32 weeks today and had my first NST and ultrasound to check fluid levels today. Fluid levels are a little on the low side, but ok. They told me to drink more water and hopefully it will be a little higher next week. NST took a little longer than 20 minutes because baby girl decided it was nap time and didn't want to move around, but she finally woke up and moved around a little and her heart rate did what they wanted it to.

Fasting numbers are creeping up again and the doctor has increased my glyburide again. I'm getting close to the maximum dose my OB will prescribe to pregnant patients, so I'm hoping this new dose will work for longer than the 2-3 weeks that the lower doses have worked.

@Elizabella85- My OB said because I'm on medication to help control my blood sugar, she would like to induce around 39 weeks if I don't go into labor on my own before then. We have not discussed a c-section at all, and I agree with you that it is early to discuss a c-section based on the size of the baby right now. I think there's still time for baby's growth to even out- but this is my first pregnancy so I don't really have much experience with any of this.
  • Hi ladies so I did my three hour test today and I'm worried it was done all wrong. Everything I'm reading says it was supposed to be 100gram drink but the lab gave me a 50gram drink. I guess I should have read this before!!!! Does anyone know?

Everywhere is different follow what your lab gave you!
  • Is anyone here on metformin? I've been on 2 different types of insulin to try to get my fasting numbers under control but so far no success - and we're on the 4th week of increasing dosage. Wondering if I should push the doc to try something else.

Too late in the game for metformin, it works slower than insulin and my doc wouldn't put me on it this late in the game. If it makes you feel any better I'm 7 weeks and still struggling with my numbers. No one seems concerned I just have weekly updates from very supportive health care providers.
  • I'm not taking metformin but I've taken in the past for potential polycystic ovarian syndrome. I felt awful on that stuff and gave up after a few weeks. Does it make you feel bad? Concerned they may want to try that if my numbers get worse.

I was on it for over a year PCOS as well and felt fine on it but it had 0 effect for me. This late in the game I would assume they would go straight to insulin rather than play around with pills. Insulin is a struggle all on its own though.
  • I have PCOS and I've been on Metformin previously. It made me feel absolutely terrible, I wouldn't want to go on it at this point AT ALL. For me, the Metformin nausea was just as bad as morning sickness, and I was on the Extended Release version that is supposed to be less harsh on your system. My doctors have said that Metformin is good if you take it the first trimester or throughout the entire pregnancy, but they don't think it is really effective against GD if you try to start it in the third trimester. One reason is because you have to build up your dosage very slowly. They only use glyburide or insulin if diet doesn't work. But you never know, if insulin still isn't working I would definitely ask the doctor about options.

  • Is anyone else having any other issues that's accompanied their GD? GD is caused by hormones produced by the placenta messing with our insulin, right? Well, I went to the OB today for a routine visit and have protein in my urine and my BP was 148/88... Now I have to do the 24hr urine catch and have more blood work. I researched and it appears that pre eclampsia is thought to happen because of a crappy placenta, basically. There are other risk factors too, but this is the main thought. Ugh... I want to ask for this placenta after DD is born and set it on fire or punt it off a mountain... Grrrrrr!!!
  • @navyblueladybug ugh sorry to hear about the pre-eclampsia! Definitely have heard that GD increases our risk for that so we are watching out as well. Hope all goes well for you!

Thanks for the metformin comments ladies!! Helpful context before I go in to see doctor Thursday/Friday. I'm up to 44 units of levemir at night and my fasting was still 120. A few days ago it was 110 at a lower dose. Frustration.
  • Hi everyone, I have been newly diagnosed and my doctor is not happy with my sugars this past week with diet modification and wants to go ahead with medication. My problem is that I have a really hard time swallowing pills. Can anyone give me a comparison of how big glyburide and metformin are compared with something like aleve or tylenol (or other well known medications)? She has also given me insulin as an option so any thoughts on the injecting yourself part of insulin would be helpful too. I think I remember seeing something about giving yourself insulin injections further up this board, so I'll look for that too. Thanks!
