Re: Gestational diabetes support group

  • My doc doesn't let regular patients go past 41 weeks, if you have GD she doesn't let you go past your due date if you are controlled with diet. Now that I'm having other issues (high BP without pre-e), I might have to go earlier than that. I get it, I'd love to go early too... Especially with all this new crap happening to me, I feel like an unsafe habitat for her these days

  • I am being induced early because my daughter had shoulder dystocia and there is concern that if my baby continues to be large (82nd) the same issue will occur this time.

  • I thought this was interesting...especially the first point about stabilizing blood sugar!

  • My doctor will be scheduling my c-section for 38 weeks. We have also started the weekly bio physical profiles to see if baby needs to be delivered even earlier. She scored 8/8 on her first bpp, so yay! I was just put on insulin last week at 33 weeks. Stopped taking my glyburide but still on Metformin. I was dreading the possibility of going on insulin, but after getting the first injection over with, the rest has been easy.

I've also started a weekly bio physical and so far 2 weeks now baby is scoring 8/8 so all looks well. Last apt my OB said of everything's keeps up then she'll push me to 39 weeks but that would likely be the latest.
  • What are the bio physicals? I'm doing weekly non stress tests but they never give me any type of scores...

A BPP is a different non-stress test. Basically it's an ultrasound that looks at your amniotic fluid, and baby's heart rate, muscle tone, movement, and breathing. Baby is scored on these things. My OB doesn't do these although he does the NST's, he sent me to an MFM for a BPP, and the MFM I go to doesn't start the BPP's before 34 weeks unless they are particularly worried about movement or fluid.

It my understanding that not every woman with GD gets these. I think it may depend on your OB and how severe your GD is. At least that's the impression I've been given by my doctor. My OB insists all the tests since I'm on medicine for my GD.

  • Ditto for me. They put me on medicine and now I go for growth every 2 weeks and bpp every Friday and currently I have appointments every 2 weeks for the regular obgyn. The last one everything was fine, baby is actually only 30 percentile. Almost 4.5lbs at 33+3. I think she said I won't go past 40 weeks but they want to keep monitoring and see what happens. Today my sugars are higher than the should be, fasting was fine because I am on insulin but breakfast and lunch not so good :(. I need just straight protein at all times

Unfortunately your body and baby needs more than just protein. Have they put you on insulin for other meals?
  • Is anyone else having a really hard time avoiding the Halloween candy?!?!?!?
  • Is anyone else having a really hard time avoiding the Halloween candy?!?!?!?

I haven't cut myself off completely... I usually have 1 or 2 pieces a day, and try to pick ones that have nuts in them for the protein (Snickers, Baby Ruth, Almond Joy, etc). But that's only because my numbers have been good and I don't need medication, I'm just diet controlled.
  • @bostonbride319 OMG this weekend was the worst ever! I couldn't eat just one... thankfully it didn't have a huge effect on my numbers, maybe cause they were so small. We have a ton of extra also, I allow myself a little at a time :)
  • I had to get the Halloween candy out of the house so dh took it to work on Monday. Two of my kids also had birthdays recently (Oct 30th & Nov 3rd) so we also have cake and ice cream in the house right now. For some reason I can resist that a lot easier than I could the bucket of left over Halloween candy!
  • Hi ladies! Hope all are doing well! I have mostly gotten my fasting numbers under control though now every once and a while my lunch number goes off the charts. Definitely starting to get screwy. Have an ultrasound tomorrow to see how big the little one is getting and scheduled for induction on 12/5 at 39 weeks.

    The end is in sight!!

I am looking forward to a turkey club sandwich with French fries after I deliver -- what about the rest of you?
  • Ready for a burger, fries and a frappachino. Getting so tired of water and tea.
  • Haven't posted on here but I was diagnosed with GD about 6 weeks ago.  I had it with my first as well.  I'm able to control with my diet.  My husband knows to get me a DQ Blizzard after I deliver.  :)  Burger and fries would be excellent too! This has been BY FAR the MOST difficult to deal with during my pregnancy.  I can handle the aches and pains but not being able to eat what I want is most difficult.  Hang in there ladies...we almost made it!!

  • Had my last growth scan last week at 35 weeks, and estimated weight was 6lbs 7oz. They said that is 75 percentile, which is a little big, but not terrible. She was 60th percentile at 29 weeks- but I had a really hard time keeping my blood sugar under control for a few weeks after that- so I am a little disappointed. Now I'm doing really well, haven't had even a single high number in over 2 weeks. 36 weeks now and my OB said she wants to induce around 38 weeks- maybe 39 weeks if my blood sugar stays under control.

I told dh I want waffles after I deliver!
  • I'm having the opposite problem... Is anyone else getting normal numbers? I don't want to get too cocky but I think I was misdiagnosed or my placenta decided to shape up. I've been getting normal numbers no matter what I eat. Is this happening to anyone else? Example... Fasting number yesterday was 74, ate 2 pieces of cinnamon raisin bread with butter and a large banana for breakfast plus coffee with half and half and an hour later my number was 64! WTF?! Dinner last night, rotisserie chicken with broccoli, 3/4 cup of rice and 1/2 cup of home made mac and cheese... BS an hour later was 91. Hmmm... Has this been happening to anyone else?
  • @navyblueladybug me!! It's been consistently low end of average, and anything less than 70 is hypoglycemic! So..... I've just been keeping Gatorade and a banana by my bed, and eating that when I wake up. That helps. Also, I find that a meal replacement shake (www.amway.com/Arielle) helps me to not faint at 8:30. It's so weird, but at 8:30 every day, I feel all weak and faint-y! Guess that's when baby wants to eat too?

My doc has said "well, you're normal. Don't worry about it. Check when you feel like it, but you're fine." Haha. I'm thinking I was misdiagnosed too!
  • @ArielleRene Glad I'm not the only one! At my last US scan DD was measuring in the 24th percentile too... So she's just a little thing!
  • Hello! I recently got diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I'm 33 weeks, and so far my levels are stable if I'm following the diet. I'm suppose to limit my carb intake to less than 15g per meal, and obviously watch my sugar. I've been told first thing in the morning I should test below 90 (it's rare, I'm usually around 95 but under 100) 2hrs after meals I need to be under 120 (easily done again, if I watch my intake)

My main struggle is dinner. It's so hard to cook without wanting carbs!

Less than 15g in a meal?! Wow... That's super restrictive. I was told 30g for breakfast, and 60g for lunch and dinner plus 3 snacks at 30g each. You can do it girl! It's not very long until LO is here and then you get your giant carb loaded after birth meal, haha! Amazing push present if you ask me ;)
  • @navyblueladybug you aren't the only one. I only have one thing that throws me out of wack!!! Rice!!!! Ugh....how I want my hubby's beef tips and rice!! And crawfish meat pies from the French Market in Natchitoches! Goodness those are my favorite!!! But everything else it stays normal.

I am also allowed more carbs. My carbs allowed are similar to @navyblueladybug. Have you met with a dietician? Or just your doctor? I would double check with the dietician, because that is a very low number of carbs and you need to be eating a balanced diet.
  • I am 37 weeks with gestational diabetes taking 1.25mg of glyburide to control my numbers after breakfast since I was always a little over 130. Since I am taking medication, is it better to schedule a c section? Baby is measuring right at 37 weeks and my glucose numbers are good, but doctor says they might induce me at 39 weeks.

    Thanks for the advice

I don't think there's any reason that you should schedule a c-section just because you're on medication. I'm on a lot higher dose of glyburide than that (5mg at bed time & 2.5mg with breakfast,) my baby is measuring a little big right now, and my doctor has not even mentioned a c-section- just induction at 38-39 weeks.

I'm on the exact same dose. Baby is measuring a bit ahead, so they want to induce at 39 weeks. My doctor told me that a c-section was not necessary unless they think baby has hit the 9 lb mark, and that he wouldn't perform a non-medically necessary one on a FTM since it could ruin my chances of ever having a vaginal delivery.

  • Same here - doctor thinks we can induce vaginally at 39 weeks. Went for a growth scan today and baby is right in the 50th percentile at 6lbs8oz (except for her massive head taking after her father). I am so excited because back at 30 weeks she was 80th percentile. Can't believe that in 3 short weeks she will be here!!

While doing my growth scan they mentioned calcifications on the placenta so it is starting to get old and is nearing the end of its life. They say that should mean that my numbers may improve because placenta will stop shooting out so many hormones. So maybe that is what is happening to some of you!
  • I have had GDM with all 3 of my pregnancies, and the first two were delivered vaginally after being induced. I plan for the same with this one. They are going to induce me at 39 weeks.
  • Thanks for all the comments
  • Just got a response from my dr for my numbers this week. I had one out of range lunch number (142 because I wanted a sweet potato, darn it, and didn't pair it with a protein). Based on this one number she is "threatening" starting me on glyburide if I don't get my diet under control. 35 weeks on Monday. Just curious if this seems a little late in the game to start meds over one slightly elevated number? Baby has been measuring right on track at every appt. I was diagnosed for failing the one hour portion of the two hour test by one point- cut off was 179, I was 180. Just wondering what others think of this?

It's not uncommon for our numbers to creep up a little during the course of the 3rd trimester, so that may be what's concerning the doctor. I know I was put on glyburide fairly quickly (insulin resistance), and around 34 weeks my meds were raised because my numbers went up and were on the higher side of normal, even though I wasn't cheating on the strict diet. It was affecting baby's size to be on the higher end of normal all the time. Perhaps your doctor is worried about that even though your baby is on track, at 35 weeks your baby could still pack on some pounds a little too quickly and make birth harder.

Otherwise, I wouldn't really worry about it, your doctor just might be super cautious. I know my doctor is because he's determined to avoid a non-emergency c-section at all costs for me since it's my first baby.

If you do have to go on glyburide, at least know that it's a really tiny pill and it's not a huge hassle to remember since it's taken with food. But I hope you don't have to go on it!

  • Thank you, I appreciate your feedback! Makes sense about being cautious to avoid c-section, this is my first as well. Alright, no more sweet potatoes!
  • Meds for going over just once? Seems harsh to me. I do well managing by diet and even then I'll see a periodic jump due to a bad decision. As long as my fasting levels are okay and it's not frequent they don't seem bothered by it.
  • I thought my diabetic nurse counselor said as long as my numbers are under 75% of the time I was ok.
  • Anyone have advice for lowering fasting numbers? I'm consistently 92-95 ish and they want under 90. :( So they keep increasing my insulin which I only take at night. My daytime numbers are fine. So frustrating. I've tried different snacks and waking up earlier to test so I'm at 8-9 hours fasting instead of 9-10. So bummed.

I had this problem too! But with higher fasting numbers. I am finally getting some in the 80s. Aiming for testing in that 8-9 hour zone helped. I also do my prebed snack with both carb and protein in it (I use a drinkable yogurt). In the end what was really successful was adding metformin to go along with the high dose of insulin. Extended release because it is supposed to be more tolerable and we fiddled with the time of day I took it to find the time that had the best effect on fasting. But again, my numbers were higher than yours when we added that. I would have been thrilled to be getting 92-95 with just insulin!
  • Ccat9177 and annh74- I thought it was a little harsh too, especially considering my fasting have never been out of range and I told her what I ate that caused it! Point taken not to cheat. thanks for the responses ladies!
  • Please tell me I'm not the only one who cheats? Lol, I will say I'm good about 95% of the time but seriously I have to treat myself once in a while. If my numbers are good all day long then I'll have a small little snickers from the halloween candy stash (doesn't even make my levels increase more than about 5 points). Another thing that I noticed sugar levels don't I crease if I have vanilla wafers. Anyone else test their limits to see what they can and can't get away with? I for one know Chinese food is a huge no no for me. This diet just isn't fun. So far though my numbers have been good enough for no meds.

Lastly!! I've read a few ladies who said their babies are measuring big and they are on meds for the diebetes. Does this medication have that effect? Or is your baby just big on their own? Thanks :-)
  • I cheat every now and then too. My doctor lets me have ice cream with nuts as my night time snack - a small amount but it's better than nothing. I neglect to mention the little bit of Magic Shell I periodically add. My morning numbers are still well within normal so I figure I'm good. Baby measuring normal so far (using belly size measurement, not ultrasound) at almost 37 weeks. Only two more weeks before we reach the point where the GD starts to level off - yay!

I think I get a ultrasound size check on Monday when I go in for my NST. We shall see.
