  • glyburide is super teeny. i am taking it and can't swallow pills either and even i can swallow this!

  • @navyblueladybug ugh sorry to hear about the pre-eclampsia! Definitely have heard that GD increases our risk for that so we are watching out as well. Hope all goes well for you!

Thanks for the metformin comments ladies!! Helpful context before I go in to see doctor Thursday/Friday. I'm up to 44 units of levemir at night and my fasting was still 120. A few days ago it was 110 at a lower dose. Frustration.

I'm on 40 units of insulin at night and also still higher than they'd like me to be. So frustrating, do you also take fast acting insulin for other meal times?

Hi everyone, I have been newly diagnosed and my doctor is not happy with my sugars this past week with diet modification and wants to go ahead with medication. My problem is that I have a really hard time swallowing pills. Can anyone give me a comparison of how big glyburide and metformin are compared with something like aleve or tylenol (or other well known medications)? She has also given me insulin as an option so any thoughts on the injecting yourself part of insulin would be helpful too. I think I remember seeing something about giving yourself insulin injections further up this board, so I'll look for that too. Thanks!

I didn't enjoy doing the injections at first but now it's a piece of cake and part of my daily routine, to each their own. Metformin is pretty small.

Glyburide is a super small round pill (at least mine are). I'd say about the same or perhaps a little smaller in diameter than ibuprofen, definitely thinner. My Metformin ER (Extended Release) were a bit harder to swallow. They were oblong white pills with the flat edges, not round like Tylenol. I'd say they might be slightly larger than Tylenol is memory serves me correctly. Not huge, but harder to swallow with a sensitive gag reflex. At least it was for me when I had morning sickness. Maybe ask if they'll let you do the glyburide solo?

  • We sailed through our first biophysical profile ultrasound today!  Go us. NST coming up on Thursday.
  • I am so having the opposite issues!! Mine was 62 this afternoon after I got home from work. Like, really? 70 is the lowest it should go before it's hypoglycemic. No wonder I felt icky and extremely tired!! I had a snack and then was fine.... Scary though, for someone who is supposed to have GD! It's been consistently on the low end of normal. I thought GD was when your sugar is too high, not too low. I'm like 90% sure I was misdiagnosed. :/ oh well. Will continue to check blood sugars and see what the doctor says on Friday.
  • @ArielleRene keep a box of raisins (kid size) on you and Id you test <70 eat them. You are also more likely to see low blood sugars sometimes with GD than with a non diabetic. Are you taking glyburide? Or insulin?

  • @nik6499 Nope, no medication.

It just concerns me slightly since everyone on this group is having such high sugars and medicating! I tested high on the 1-hr and 3-hr glucose test, too, but other than that, sugar has always been on the low end of normal.

I get low sugars as well. Typically when I don't eat enough carbs or space my meals out too far. I'm diet controlled with no medication.

  • Sounds like my numbers... Low fasting in the morning sometimes and I'm diet controlled. Sometimes I question if I even have GD and then I'll have a random big number.
  • Was just diagnosed this morning, hoping to fix this with diet changes. Meeting with a doctor tomorrow who is supposed to put me on a week-long meal plan, then I go back and they run some glucose testing to determine if this can be controlled with diet changes or medication. Because I was "just" barely over the max results I'm hoping that means just diet changes.

Does anybody have any blogs or websites they get recipes off of? I've got 12 weeks to go and don't want to feel like I'm shorting myself at meals and constantly eating the same stuff.
  • Do you have any websites you go to for different meal plans?
  • American diabetes association is a wealth of resources

  • You sound just like me! I scored a 136 (so just 6 points over the mark) and I was so upset and just cried and cried to my husband. Took the 3 hour test just yesterday and again, consistently was just 5-8 points over the range for each hour. So while I've officially been diagnosed, hoping to treat this with a change in diet and not having to monitor with tests throughout the day or medication.

The way I see it, we're not harming the baby (my husband does a good job continuously reminding me that the baby is healthy and will be happy) and if anything, this is just helping us stay super healthy ourselves during the pregnancy and maybe an added bonus of maintaining our weight gain! :)

No, right now just using long-acting at nighttime. I have been lucky and had no problems controlling the post-meal numbers (except I can't eat carb at breakfast) so no need for insulin at meal times.

@kca4516 I also have gotten used to the injections. Scary at first but after you realize they don't hurt and the needle is so tiny, it stops being a big deal.
  • Just curious how everyone is doing today. I tried cream of wheat for breakfast this morning and that didn't work. Oops. I am relatively new to this GD "game" but as far as I know it's going ok. It's interesting to see how different things affect blood sugar. Does anyone else feel tired when your blood sugar is high? Happy Friday!!
  • Hello - new to the GD group. I wasn't able to complete the 3 hour GTT because I vomited it up immediately after drinking, but my fasting was 95 and my prior 1-hour O'Sullivan was 188, so she felt she had enough to tentatively diagnose me without making me re-test.
My question is this: she told me to go home and start testing every AM (fasting) and 1-2 hours postprandially. She said to report back if sugars were high - and today my post-prandial sugars were 178 and 148. I called her but she's gone for the weekend. I'm now feeling lost as I was given to guidance as to what to eat or how to manage this with diet. I'm a nurse but OB is definitely not my area of expertise.
I've read older posts referring to carb counting, spacing meals, etc - but no one has mentioned whether this varies depending on your individual sugars (for example, do I decrease my carbs if my sugars are consistently high?)
Sorry for the long post, but I'm feeling stressed that I can't get a hold of my doc, and I'm now almost 32 weeks and just finding out that I have GD. Looking for any guidance!
  • I was told 3 snacks a day, 30g of carbs each, 30g for breakfast and 60g for lunch and dinner. Make sure you eat protein with each... It definitely keeps you from spiking. Eat every 2-3 hours too... Although I'm struggling with that, especially the days I'm at work (night shift nurse). My numbers have always been good and that is kind of making me slack off with testing lately, that and I found out DD is measuring small somehow! Call your OB on Monday, you'll be fine for the weekend :)
  • Thank you for this! I appreciate it!
  • For the ladies who also are dealing with low sugar.... I visited with my doc about my low numbers and he said so long as I'm not fainting anymore, don't worry about it and just eat more if I need to. He said to just keep doing what I'm doing! Yay!

Having a brutal sugar day, just can't get it under control. Super frustrated and feel like a pos mom.

Hang in there-tomorrow is a new day!!

I tested high after dinner tonight so I guess today wasn't a real good day for me either. I was hungry tonight but didn't think the normal snack of ice cream or anything that would raise my blood sugar would be good so I ate a chicken breast. We'll see what the nurse says next week about that one-and I'm interested to see what my blood sugar will be in the morning.
  • @kdoak2015 Hang in there!! Every day is different and a new day to try for better numbers

@AnnH74 most days I have scrambled eggs with cheese for breakfast. If my fasting number was low enough I can sneak in a slice of wheat bread or whole wheat ego waffle. But mornings are hard for me so i usually have to go without carb.

Well I am back to NPH insulin, but with metformin at night. So far no GI side effects so that is nice. Not where I need to be numbers wise but I am encouraged that they are under 110 with this combination. They are talking about inducing me at 38-39 weeks now - crazy to think baby could be here in just 5 weeks instead of the 7 I have been counting on!! Only 5-7 more weeks of insulin shots to go!!
  • Thanks ladies, we had friends over and decided to go for dinner so of course I splurged a little bit. Took insulin and just could not get my numbers down after dinner. They were high for 4 hours but the next morning I was good again. Splurging is not worth the stress so I don't be doing that again. Thanks for the support.
  • Just stopping by to say I'm having a rough day. Blood sugar level is fine just having a hard time eating what I should and nothing really sounds all that good.
  • I was "diagnosed" last week.
Missed the fasting number by 1 point and the 1-hr by 13. Two and three hour numbers were well within normal.
So feeling pretty irked about this. Happy to include a better variety of foods in my diet and add more exercise. Not thrilled about the testing.

  • Random question - have any of you tested again if you were to get a high # and then got a different result?
I've been doing this recently, and i've been getting new #s when re-tested. The few times i've gotten over 140 i'll re-test to be sure, and sometimes it's in the 120's-30's. Does pricking a different finger matter? So weird.
  • Not sure about different fingers but my doc said if you squeeze the blood out by pushing on your fingertip you might lower it a bit. She says you milk it like a cow, not squeeze the fingertip. That seems like a big number diff though - I'd ask doc or better yet show them when in office.
  • Make sure you wash your hands first, I had sugar on my hands number sky high. Washed it was normal

  • There is an acceptable amount of error in the strips too. I think maybe it's plus or minus about 6 points. So there could be varied numbers when checking at the same time.
  • Anyone's doctors discuss induction yet. Last week my OB stated that we wouldn't make it to term and they would likely induce 2 weeks early or depending on how my scans go maybe earlier. They haven't done a growth scan yet so they don't seem too concerned of her size but they keep talking about fluids and how may placenta stops working properly etc. anyone else experience anything similar. I'm happy to have her in my arms earlier but want her to be ripe enough.
  • I'm having a growth scan at 37 weeks and my doctor said that we would discuss where things stood after that. She is concerned that the baby may be large and that we may need to induce before 40 weeks. She is concerned because my son was 9 and a half pounds and I did not have GD, so this one could be even bigger. I guess I will find out where things stand in about three weeks. I agree that I want to do what's for the baby if she needs to come out sooner to keep her healthy, but I would also like to keep her cooking as long as possible.
  • My OB said they won't let me go past my due date, but if my numbers are still good and my scan looks ok, we'll go to 40 weeks. I'm not on any meds and baby has been measuring right on track. The OB said that baby's proportions may be off and that's one thing they'll look for at my scan (at 38 wks)
  • My OB wants to induce at the end of 38 or beginning of 39 weeks if I don't go into labor on my own before then. Baby is measuring right on track, fluid levels are good, and no other complications at this point, but my OB said she won't let me go past 39 weeks because I'm on medication to control my blood sugar.
  • Second weekly bio physical profile ultrasound today.  Baby still looks good.  Nst on Thrusday.  Tuesdays and Thursdays.  This is my new routine :/
  • My doctor said that they would like to induce any time in the 39th week and would maybe let me go past my due date but would prefer that I deliver before then. So far I'm able to control levels with diet and baby is actually measuring about average based on my ultrasound from yesterday.
  • We have been planning to induce at 38 weeks since the beginning.

  • Wow, my doctor said we won't do anything different as long as numbers are in control. I wonder why everyone is being induced early? I want to go early! ha My due date is 12/28 so i'd love a baby this year!

If my numbers were under control, my doc said she would allow me to go to 41 weeks. But because my fasting numbers are not under control and I have to be on medication, it's no more than 40 and possibly the 38-39. All depends on individual situations and how high risk they consider you.
