Re: Gestational diabetes support group

  • Please tell me I'm not the only one who cheats? Lol, I will say I'm good about 95% of the time but seriously I have to treat myself once in a while. If my numbers are good all day long then I'll have a small little snickers from the halloween candy stash (doesn't even make my levels increase more than about 5 points). Another thing that I noticed sugar levels don't I crease if I have vanilla wafers. Anyone else test their limits to see what they can and can't get away with? I for one know Chinese food is a huge no no for me. This diet just isn't fun. So far though my numbers have been good enough for no meds.

Lastly!! I've read a few ladies who said their babies are measuring big and they are on meds for the diebetes. Does this medication have that effect? Or is your baby just big on their own? Thanks :-)

Meds are meant to HELP this. GD babies are big because their bodies are working overtime to produce enough of their own insulin to combat our high blood sugars

  • I just polished off a White Castle cheese slider and 5 cheese sticks... So yes, I do, haha! I have fasting numbers in the 70's on no meds though and on my last growth scan DD was in the 24th percentile so I tend to cheat a little more often. You're not alone!
  • Fasting in the 70s?! Wow that's great! I'm lucky if it's under 90. I think it's high, but my doctor doesn't seem concerned. :/
  • I have cheated a couple of times. It's hard not to. My numbers are usually good though and I am not on medication. My baby girl is measuring big, but they believe it is due to the fact that I just have large babies and not the GD. My son was 9 lbs 9oz and I did not have GD. He was long amd skinny. They think baby girl might be over ten pounds if they let her go to 40 weeks. I will find out tomorrow if they will induce at 39 because of this...I'm 38 weeks today...so I could have her in a little over a week!!!

Eating a cheese stick before bed has kept my fastings under 90

  • I almost always have cheese with my bedtime
snack with some carbs. I've tried more carbs/fewer proteins or more protein/fewer carbs... Seems like any snack I try results in pretty much the same fasting result. Guess we'll keep increasing insulin and see how it goes.

  • Hi ladies, havent checked in for a while, glad everyone's numbers are under control and babies are getting big and healthy. I get to meet with OB this week and discuss induction plan for next week, pretty excited. No idea how big baby is as they don't like to measure due to inaccuracy but our bios have all been 100%.
  • Has anyone else declined meeting with their diabetic counselor or declined a growth ultrasound? Let me explain. We have a high deductible insurance plan that covers the routine checkups but unfortunately not the appointments for the diabetic part of the pregnancy. I've had two meetings with the counselor and one ultrasound. We are down over $1000 with just those appointments. I'm supposed to have another meeting and another ultrasound tomorrow but we are curious how necessary those really are. At the first growth scan the baby was around the 50 percentile. My blood sugar numbers really have been fine as long as I eat correctly-no medicine required at all. So, anyone else skip any of this?

And yes, I called the clinic and chatted with them and am planning on talking to my regular ob at my appointment tonight but just curious if anyone else has not done growth ultrasounds/diabetic counseling.

You will more than likely have to pay your full deductible for the birth in a hospital. So, you wouldn't really be paying extra, you would just be paying down your deductible. It sucks...i have a pretty high deductible too. I hadn't spent too much of the deductible the year my son was born, so getting a bill for thousands of dollars because of the hospital stay was not fun. Check with your insurance to see, but I would guess that you will be paying for the delivery.
  • I have a high deductible plan too. Like PP said I know with the delivery I'll max out my out of pocket for the year so it's just paying more now as opposed to around delivery time. That's why I've been ok when they order extra testing, labs, ultrasounds, etc... It's all going to come out the same price for me in the end. If I was going into another year and it was going to split up the deductible between two years I would have probably been more likely to decline.
  • @KRH6829 and @navyblueladybug thanks for your input. I did just pull out some paperwork from my ob clinic and had I not had to have extra care (GD) we would still make it to our deductible with just doctor bills and that doesn't include hospital bills or baby bills (both doctor and hospital for him). Unfortunately after we reach the deductible we still have to pay 20% and our insurance pays 80% but that's a lot better than 100%. Like you said good thing we are having these babies before the end of the year!! Thanks again for your help ladies!!
  • My numbers are in control, so yes I cheat regularly! Even with cheating it won't put me over my 140 limit in 1 hour so I figure it's fine.
  • I can't eat churches chicken strips or pancakes w/ syrup. Anything else in moderation is totally fine. My fasting numbers have been in the 70s and 80s. I haven't spiked in a while even skipping protein rich foods.
  • Checking in with my GD ladies, how is everyone doing? How are your babies, your deliveries and your sugars?

I'll start- doing well adjusting to parenthood and rolling with things as they go. I had some decent baby blues the first few weeks due to baby not gaining well, having to decide to supplement with formula and just having my whole world flipped upside down.
Labor was actually really easy and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Induced at 38 weeks and baby arrived less than 14hrs after we were admitted.
DD is doing well and we are so in love with her.

My sugars are a different story and im extremely nervous that I was pre diabetic before DD even came into my world. I was cleared at the hospital but have been checking and my morning fasting numbers are in the pre range and then I noticed if I eat a lot of carbs they are higher :(. We have a doc apt Tuesday so I'm going to discuss then. How is everyone else?
  • I was induced at 39 weeks- and it was kind of terrible. Checked into the hospital on Monday, Dec 7th- not dilated or effaced. I had Cytotec (12 doses total) and Pitocin for many, many hours, and finally a Cook balloon to manually dilate my cervix. The balloon was super painful for me, and that is the point that I finally caved in and asked for pain medication. First they gave me Fentanyl, then a walking epidural, and finally a full epidural- which was great. I still wasn't making any progress though, and it looked like I was headed for a c-section on Friday morning, when suddenly my body decided it was ready to have a baby. Once I was actually in labor, things went really fast. I was 5cm when the balloon came out, and 10cm 13 minutes later. I pushed through 3 contractions, and baby girl was here. 4 days in labor and delivery was way too long, especially since I was stuck in bed hooked up to an IV and fetal heart rate and contraction monitors pretty much the whole time. Every time I changed positions a nurse would rush in and readjust the monitors. I was allowed to leave my room to walk the hallways only 3 times in 4 days.

DD had slightly low blood sugar at birth- it was 42 and they wanted it at least 45. An hour later it was fine- and they continued to check it for the next 12 hours but it was always fine. She was also slightly jaundiced, but not enough that she actually needed treatment, just monitoring until it cleared up. We had to stay two night after she was born, so I was in the hospital for a total of 6 nights.

Breastfeeding has been difficult. I've had to supplement with formula though because my milk didn't start to come in until the end of day 5, dd had lost 15% of her birth weight and wasn't having wet or dirty diapers anymore. At 3 weeks I'm still struggling with low supply issues, and dd is not gaining as much as the doctor would like. I'm still trying though.

I really thought I was diabetic or at least pre-diabetic because I was diagnosed so early, but so far my blood sugar has been perfect. Fasting has been in the low 80's, after meals in the 90's. My doctor wants me to do a 2-hour test at 6 weeks post partum, so I guess I will know for sure then. Either way I know I really need to work on eating healthy and getting to a healthy weight as soon as possible.
  • I've been ignoring testing and am just waiting to do the 6week glucose tolerance test they want me to do. A few fastings the first week were high but what do they expect with sleep deprivation and being up all night breastfeeding? Also if I get hungry at night I am going to eat something!!
  • Baby girl did fine with her sugars at the hospital, and I haven't had any issues with the few checks that I have done so far. I am just so happy to be able to eat fruit again!!! I just could not eat it and have numbers where they needed to be...it's so nice to just have apple if that's what I want for a snack.
  • My little guy did great with his blood sugars at the hospital. I don't have to check my sugars anymore unless I feel off. It was nice to not have to worry about counting carbs especially the first couple weeks when things were a bit more crazy. However we just found out (per his pediatrician) that little man is having trouble with me eating dairy. He's been really fussy, not sleeping the greatest, and has a nasty diaper rash. So I am going from one restricted diet to another. Sigh. At least it's different foods this time that I can't have-I suppose that gives a little variety. I hope it's only for about another month but we'll see how he does. We started him on a probiotic too. He already seems to be doing better and it's only been a couple days.
  • Can I just say, it's SO nice to feel hungry, not faint-y!! I can wait til I'm actually hungry to eat now, rather than feeling like I'll faint if I don't eat every 2 hrs.
  • Hey ladies, anyone have to do the six week follow up two hour test? I was diet controlled and never had crazy numbers so I was planning on skipping it.... But then they called me to schedule it today. How did you handle that with your little one? I don't want to take mine with me to sit in a lab for two hours- at a hospital with sick people. But I also don't want to make DH take the morning off and since I ebf I think I'll need relief, or have exploding boobs. Just curious what others did?
  • I don't have to do mine for 6 months, they told me sometimes it takes hormones that long to balance. Can you ask to do it in a few months?
  • I'm supposed to do mine anywhere between 6 and 12 weeks. We have a lab in our doctor's office and they are open on Saturday mornings. I will probably take my new LO with me when I go and leave the 3 yr old and 1.5 yr old home with dad.

FWIW when I did one of my 3 hour tests there was a mom at the lab doing her post delivery two hour test. She had her baby with her and the lab technicians were not sure if nursing would affect the results of the test so they actually wouldn't let her nurse (not that they were mean or rude about it). Maybe just plan to nurse right before the test and then right after???
  • My OB wanted me to get my A1C checked soon but since I moved I haven't got it done yet. I probably won't since my numbers were never bad. Honestly I don't want to pay for it either... New year, new deductible and I'm out of money in my HSA.
  • My LO is 6 weeks today and I was going to do the 2-hour tomorrow (Saturday) morning. I was going to feed her and then leave her with dh while I did the test.

But then I started having gallbladder issues, and I'm having surgery today. My OB told me to wait at least another 6 weeks before taking the test. She wants me to be completely recovered from surgery.
  • I am planning on going in for the test next week. DD will be eight weeks then. I have randomly been testing my numbers still and everything has been good, so hopefully I'll pass the test. I am nervous though...it will have a huge impact on the rest of my life if I fail and have diabetes.
  • I passed the two hour glucose tolerance test, but now have some concerns. I have been told that both I and my DD have increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes in our lives. I'm fine that I have that risk now, but I feel bad for DD. Has anyone else been told this?
  • When I was diagnosed they said their wasn't enough study to prove it affects the babies, hope this helps.
  • No one said anything to me about the re-testing, but since I still have the meter, I used it a couple times. Still totally normal. Yay!

Congrats! Yes, I was told the same thing, and felt the same way.

I hope it is this too!!!
  • DD is two months old today. I was a little overweight when I got pregnant with her...wearing either a 14 or 16 depending on where I shopped. After the diet I had to follow during the pregnancy and then keeping up with it just because (most of the time) I weigh 40 pounds less than when I got pregnant!!!  Anyone else having some good weight loss?  While I'm not glad I had GD, it definitely gave me a jump start on losing the weight that I needed to lose.
