  • It can also help to reduce your dietary fat intake. As diets high in fat tend to lend towards more insulin resistance as well.

  • Joining the club... tested just outside of normal on all of my 3 hour draws, including fasting. Such a bummer! I have my dr appt in 2 days to go over what this means, diet, etc. I've read every post on here, and in the meantime it seems I need to cut my sugar and match my carbs with protein for each meal. I'm sure i'll learn more on Friday. This is super surprising since I have no family history, not overweight etc. But pregnancy does funny things I guess, I also have anemia. Fun.

I have always had a higher fat diet, before baby was conceived I was fully keto for 8 months, which is extremely low carb, high fat diet. SO was losing weight and I was gaining muscle from this diet and we were both given clear bills of health from our doctors.

In my first trimester, I had to wean off that diet as nothing I eating before was appetizing. My OB says I have gained a few more pounds than she would have liked at this point, but sees my activity levels and believes that I am still at a very healthy weight. But maybe being on that diet is still affecting my body's ability to break down sugars.

Yesterday, at my appointment she mentioned that if my blood tests come back normal for GD that we will talk about the results at my next appointment, however I missed a call today from her nurse saying that she needed to discuss some results. The one-hour test left me lethargic all day and I had a lingering headache in the few hours immediately following. From what I have read this is extremely normal when you have just been jammed full of sugar.

I called back but still haven't heard anything from back. So now I am just preparing a little for possibly doing the 3 hour test or being diagnosed.

  • I'm 28 weeks, failed my one hour, so going in for my 3 hour tomorrow. My schedule is insane and feel like I haven't been able to follow the strict 3 day diet my doctor prescribed before the test. How did all of you do? Wondering if I should reschedule and attempt to be bionic?

I wasn't given a strict diet to follow, but I did try to limit my sugar intake between the two, which was only 2 days.
  • I wasn't given a special diet to follow before my 3-hour test, but if you're worried about it then you should ask your doctor.
  • I also was not given a strict diet and I don't think it really matters, your body is going to process the sugar the same way. I would just take the test, it's better to find out earlier if you have GD so you can get on the right path and get it under control for your baby. I'm still struggling with my morning numbers but hoping they will figure out the right insulin dosage so it can be controlled ASAP!
  • I've been on the GD diet for 17 weeks now, and I had my first growth scan today. I was really worried that LO would be huge because I've had some problems controlling my blood sugar, especially in the last month or so. They estimate she is 3lbs 5oz, which at 29+3 they say is right on track- 60th percentile. The doctor also didn't see any of the other issues that GD can cause. I am so relieved! I have one more growth scan scheduled for 36 weeks.

How is everyone else doing? I know most have only been recently diagnosed- so have you had or do you have any extra ultrasounds scheduled? It is standard for GD patients with my OB, along with 2x weekly NST's starting at 32 weeks- but I'm not sure if it's the same everywhere.
  • I had a growth scan Tuesday and LO weighed 3 lbs I don't remember ounces I thought close to half lb. which puts me in the 92nd percentile :( I also have too much fluid and met the diagnostic criteria for polyhydraminos. And the thing I'm struggling with is that my glucose has been fine.

:( I'm sorry to hear that. I feel like the more I learn about GD, the less I understand it. I hope your next scan brings better news.
  • I failed my 3-hour test yesterday ):
  • Anyone on Insulin? I have been on insulin for about a week now and il still struggling with my morning two numbers. I've gone from 6-12 units of insulin before bed and before breakfast and the numbers are as high as they were before the insulin. Do I just need to keep going up until my body reacts? Super frustrated.
  • Well... I'm officially joining the club... I found out I have gestational diabetes today.... My Dr. referred me to a pregnancy endocrinologist... Numbers are so high she's thinking insulin might have to be incorporated but we'll see... My pregnancy is officially considered high risk with indicators for pappa-a as well... Weekly appointments and monitoring to follow.... Baby did great during the non-stress test, and as of now she's measuring perfectly for 30 weeks... She made sure to explain that none of this was preventable or anything I could've done differently ... This is just how my body reacts to pregnancy which made me feel a lot better as depressing thoughts of failure started to seep in....
  • @Catherine1021 I think the hard part is that it isn't like typical diabetes because the placental hormones are screwing with us

  • Hi All, I had GD with my first pregnancy and do not with this one. I couldn't even believe it when they told me I passed! I've been reading this thread bc I just assumed I would have it.

Anyway I'm not here to gloat, just wanted to offer a word of advice. Check with your docs now about what type of appts they require as you get closer to your due date. Mine called me at 36 weeks to say that I should have been coming in TWICE a week from 34 weeks on. Both appts had to include a non stress test and one ultrasound per week. Since they forgot to tell me that I would have to be coming in that often, those appointments were impossible to schedule! Especially bc both kinds of appts are for longer blocks of time that regular prenatal.

Point is: find out what their policy is now so you have some options when it comes to scheduling.

    Good luck to you all!
  • Question about the evening snack. I have been having a snack about two and a half hours after dinner before I go to bed. I was told to have this snack. My morning fasting numbers have been close to the high end of the range I was given and then last night I fell asleep before I had my snack and my morning number was better. Is anyone not having this snack?
  • @KRH6929- I hate eating a snack at bedtime, but  have to because I take glyburide at night. If I don't eat something, then I get hypoglycemic in the middle of the night. Before I was on glyburide, my OB told me to go ahead and try not eating before bed to see if my fasting number was any better. For me it didn't matter, it was about the same whether I ate or not. If you have better numbers without that snack, then I say you probably don't need it. Just let your doctor know your fasting number is better without it.

Depends on the person if it works for you. When I don't have a snack my numbers rebound higher. Let your doctor know. Are they also testing you for ketones? Mine was concerned with me skipping snacks because then I got small amounts of ketones and so I wasn't getting enough carbs.

I am on insulin too! Started earlier this week. I'd call your doc to ask about your numbers if you are worried. For me they have me keeping at it and increasing the dose because they told me that it takes a few days to truly start to see the effect. Started me just at nighttime because my fasting numbers are the issue, and I actually rebounded higher than ever before for my first 3 days. Finally starting to see the numbers go down. I started at 12 units and am now up to 19. Hoping for another good decrease in the morning.

Definitely frustrating though because I still have a ways to go! This morning I was 110 and we are trying to get under 95!
  • We have an extensive family history of DM but my A1c has always been low. I failed my 1 hour and feel horrible. I'm so worried I've hurt her in some way. They said my 3 hour could come back normal but I'm not sure. 1 hour was 149.

    I failed my 1 hour with 161. I passed the 3 hour.
  • What are you eating for your pre-bedtime snack? Could it be there's not enough protein in it?

I just took the 3-hour test, and my results were a bit confusing. I have PCOS, so I know I'm more susceptible to developing GD. But I just don't understand the results!

I failed the 1-hour test with a 136 (by 2 measly points). For the 3-hour test, all but the final test were normal (fasting = 80, 1 hour = 152, 2 hour = 101, 3 hour = 142). Is it really possible for blood sugar to jump 40 points in the third hour like that? My OB said she thought the results were abnormal, but she confirmed them with the lab. She said I could retake the test if I wanted, but I should also talk to my endo.

I have an appointment on Monday with my endo, but I thought I'd see if this has happened to anyone else.

  • So I too have GD. I am not overweight, I eat healthy, exercise etc. Everyone is shocked that I have it, myself included. It sucks. I have other complications with baby which puts baby at risk for low birth weight and intrauterine growth restriction. Baby last measured in the 6th percentile. I am trying to eat enough to gain weight so baby keeps gaining, but it is so hard with dietary restrictions. I lost two pounds in one week, so I am 31 weeks and have only gained 18 pounds. I am feeling so hopeless. I meet a nutritionist tomorrow, thank God because its been a week and I am sick of food. I am sure the stress of everything doesnt help me gain weight too. I just want to take care of myself so baby can grow and be healthy!
  • @ireland82 I wonder if it jumped for the third hour because you were hungry and your liver started pushing out more sugar?

Because I definitely get jumps without eating, especially in the morning during fasting time, which is beyond frustrating.
  • Hi everyone. I'm really new to diabetes and I have a couple of questions. I tried reading up on it, but there is a lot of information out there. My doctor has me only testing my sugar before meals and right before bed. Is anyone else doing this? I don't understand why the after meal sugar test isn't important. All of my test have been under 90, which is what I read it should be. I feel like I'm missing some important information.
  • I'm not testing before only after? But I am new to this as well! also I am skinny and in OK shape and everyone was surprised I have it as well and my baby was measuring small in the last growth scan, but they say the major growth happens from 30-36 so we will see what happens with that! It's certainly frustrating to need to worry about all of this and eat more, but a nutritionist will totally help!

Never heard of checking before meals only after. I would follow up with a specialist if you can.

Also to the two women stating that you are skinny/ eat healthy and are surprises you have GD, I would speak to your docs and get a bit more educated as there are more factors to this disease then your speaking of.
  • So there are a lot of schools of thought on this. As an adult diabetes educator I tell my patients to check before every meal and at bedtime. As a gestational diabetic trying to find my own pattern I test before every meal, 2 hours after every meal and at bedtime and I spot check middle of the night if I can. But I am also looking for my own pattern and my OB knows my level of education and familiarity with DM so my regimen is much different than most. And i amped up my checking when discovered baby is very large and fluid is high.

Your doctor tells you to check according to what they want to see to monitor your levels. They are all a little different.

  • @kdoak2015 I have been educated an have learned a lot about it. I was just relating to the PP so she could feel like it too can happen to anyone. @nik6499 I haven't asked about testing before. What is the reasoning for testing before vs after?
  • With GD most providers are more interested in how you handle mealtime carbs which is why they do 2 hours after. For a diabetic we typically go before meals because we are able to determine if they are properly controlled prior to eating which helps determine if they are handling their mealtime carbs and their insulin response if they need correctional insulin we can dose correctional based on this reading and determine which medicine to use based on this information. It's also easier to get someone to test prior to a meal versus 2 hours after

  • My OB has me testing first am and 1 hour after meals. I'm also in good shape, exercise etc like some people mentioned but doc says he has marathoners, yoga instructors who end up with GD. It's more about your personal sugar processing than weight I've learned. She far Ny numbers have been good, the only thing that put me over was a banana with a meal - now I know.
  • Thanks for all the info ladies. The specialist wants to me check before meals and before bedtime. My sugar seems to be in the range I've read online, so hopefully I controlled this with diet.
  • I just had a follow up with the dietician. I have been on a GD diet for two weeks and have lost 5 pounds. She said that it wasn't ideal to be losing weight, but I am doing pretty good with my numbers. Anyone else losing weight? Is your doctor concerned?
  • I was over weight to begin with and have only gained 20lbs and am 30 weeks. The last 6 weeks I haven't gained any losing aprx 2lbs but my doc isn't concerned. I think 5lbs in 2 weeks would be a bit of a concern.
