@Sammy K I'm so happy to hear of your successes! Maybe this is a trend towards better times, more sleep, and less discomfort for LO. Fingers crossed. The no coffee thing would be the hardest part for me. That and sugar of course...I fully admit my addiction.
@kes166 my LO does that when she feeds and it's her cue that she needs to burp. She also head bobs at the boob at punches my boob with her fist.
Jesus, that cost SUCKS! We are on special formula that is $30 every 4.5 days. I knew babies were expensive but forgot about some of these things.
That must be the same formula we were given as the next option. I looked into it and it was going to be about $40 for a 5-6 day supply but I didn't check prices anywhere else. In the end, it's worth it for a happy baby, right? I just wish there was an easier way to figure it out other than trial and error.
LO is now getting 70% of his milk from me, yea!! Still have a long way to go but progress (due to ties and a smaller jaw we had a few weeks of zero latching, then big supply issues). Proud that I hung in there through SNS, a shield, supplements, etc. Terrified that I'm going to wake up one day and have no milk at all
@Sammy K I'm so happy for you that your LO seems to be making some progress - a scream free poop and some smiles and some sleep sound great after all you have been going thru. I'm sorry you've had to take such an extreme diet to do it, but really happy that you two had some positive strides. I often think about you and your LO usually during our 3am feeding (not in a creepy way, just wishing things were better for you) and it makes me happy to read your post. Here's hoping things continue to improve
Accomplishment: LO (2 months old) latched on and drank directly from my (inverted) nipples several times yesterday, on both sides!!! We had been exclusively using the nipple shield. I tried latching him on directly when he was a newborn with no dice. Even now, it helps if I've been using the nipple shield for a few minutes so the nipple is a little raised and he can find it easier. He wasn't able to do this a few weeks ago though...at about 4 weeks the LC even tried bringing the nipples out with a little syringe thing and he couldn't do it then, so she was not optimistic he would ever be able to do it. I'm not sure what has changed other than he is older and better at breastfeeding in general? Even without the nipple shield, he knows where the milk is!
I'm not sure when we'll be able to wean completely off the nipple shield, but I was so surprised he could do it at all, since there is very little there to latch on to! A bonus was that he does not seem to cough and choke as often without the nipple shield. Sometimes the nipple shield fills with milk and it is too much for him and makes him cough. Without the nipple shield, would the flow be slower? I've noticed my flow is pretty fast these days, which I attribute to too much pumping at work and maybe pumping too forcefully. So I'm trying to reduce the pumping a little, and when I'm with him all day like I am this weekend I'm just feeding on demand and not pumping at all. Or maybe it's not that it flows more slowly but just that it doesn't have that extra area to pool and overflow into his mouth. Anyway, I will definitely continue experimenting with this.
I've also been experimenting with the side lying position in bed, with mixed results. Our mattress is soft and it's so hard to get the angle of the breast just right. Was ambitious and tried side lying without the nipple shield yesterday...that didn't work so well and he would up sucking on an area above my actual nipple enough to leave a mark! So hard to see what he is doing. So for the most part, we feed in a chair with the My Brest Friend pillow, but it is getting kind of awkward and I'm afraid if I'm not holding him at all times he will roll right off! I checked the age specs for My Brest Friend and he should be able to use it till 18 months, but he already seems almost too big for it...can't wait till we master the side lying position and laid back position so I won't have to sit in a chair using both hands all the time! One hand to prevent him rolling off and the other hand to hold my breast or readjust the nipple when needed.

Awesome job! You can also try (if you have one) using a handheld/manual pump a few pumps before putting LO to breast, they are great at everting inverted nipples! Good luck
@kes166 my guy has been sucking his fist and sticking it in his mouth sometimes when we are feeding him his bottle. Him putting his fist to his mouth used to be (and continues to be) a hunger cue for him, but doing it while he's eating is new the past week or two. It is a little frustrating, but he also rubs it real fast across his mouth looking like a cartoon character eating corn on the cob, so it makes me smile usually. Also, he usually accompanies it with the classic Maggie Simpson pacifier sucking sound... Pretty funny
@hoodoll82 I'm not 100% sure, but I know they work in different ways. The Zantac is more immediate and the Prilosec has to build up in their system. It seems Zantac is the first option and the Prilosec is a stronger treatment, for lack of a better description.
Just a footnote, there must not be a generic version of Prilosec because 1 month cost $40 with insurance and Zantac was $7.
Omeprazole is the generic of Prilosec. You may want to ask if you can switch. Or...it may be on a different tier for your insurance?
@dancegurl1118 sorry I keep asking you about it! I've been looking online and I'm pretty sure she has a lip tie. What kind of doctor did you see to diagnose and do the procedure?
@jesshrou Is that for the adult version or infant version? I know the prilosec is a compound Rx, so I had to go to a pharmacy that has compounding capabilities. It could be a different tier; I admit I don't pay much attention.
Can I have a Flame Free Sunday Question? Does anybody know if it is safe to get a tattoo while breastfeeding? I know its a huge no-no while pregnant due to a compromised immune system and risk of infection that could spread to baby. But are we still compromised and if a tattoo were to get infected, would that go thru breastmilk? For that matter, what about the idea of the ink itself?

Pretty certain it's safe! One of my good friends is basically a breast feeding guru (breastfed 3 babies and is in love with learning about it), and I know she's gotten several tattoos while breastfeeding. I know her well enough to confidently say that she would never have done that without researching it first. Her most recent tattoo was of a woman breastfeeding a baby and her youngest was about 3 months when she got it - and, at 11 months, she's still being breastfed
@caitlincunn I really recommended joining the FB group "Tongue Tie Babies SuppOrt Group". There are 35k members and I learned so much. They also have a list of all the "preferred" providers in every state...meaning those who do tie revisions well and are knowledgable. They also list who works with insurance, etc. We paid out of pocket. Bleh. The one I went to was fantastic and was on their preferred providers list. I can't say enough good things about the knowledge I gained from that Facebook group.

Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.
After taking 2oz from a Tommee Tippee I was like OK WE GOT THIS. Fail. Refused it a million times after. She's taken the Lansinoh Momma bottle twice with no issues so I'm crossing my fingers...but definitely giving it a few more feedings before I buy more since we already have spent a small fortune on bottles.

@mellymar on another thread, there were mixed responses about tattoos and someone said the artist may not do it if if s/he knows you're breastfeeding. But I may be misremembering. And it could also be a question of stigma vs actual science, as with many things with BF.
Are you getting one? Do you have others? I've always liked the idea, but I'm a commitment-phobe and needle-phobe, lol
@mellymar I read as long as it's a reputable place, your risk of infection is the same as having dental work done.
What are you thinking? I've been thinking about my next one. I should just schedule the appointment because last I heard, the wait list for my preferred girl was a year. Crazy.
@mellymar i was actually talking to one of the local tattoo artists a couple weeks ago when DH had his consult' and she said the only real risk with breastfeeding would be infection as always(and your LO scratching it) it wouldnt pass into the milk either i believe she said. im actually looking into getting my next one pretty soon here.
ETA: is this where one of us starts a tattoo thread for sharing pictures of them and ideas for the next ones?
@virginiaunicorn11@Sammy K@JessHeppell well I asked Dr Google and he said pretty much what y'all have said - generally safe as long as the artist uses good hygiene practices but that the artist may refuse if they know you are breastfeeding. Interestingly, I read about a legal case in Australia where a judge banned a woman from further breastfeeding her 11 month old because she had gotten a tattoo. One thing I did read, however, was that it is recommended to wait one year after giving birth to give your body time to recover. It didn't really say *why* or what scientific reason is behind that statement, but there it was.
And yes, I do already have tattoos, I have 3, one of which takes up a large portion of my upper back. I had been planning to get a tattoo of Fun's pawprint when I found out I was pregnant and had to wait. Now I have another pawprint to get tattooed, so I was wondering when I will finally get to pay homage to my friends. And of course, I'll need Master P's name and some suitable artwork wise at some point
@virginiaunicorn11 And, if you can handle the pain of contractions, getting tattooed is nothing, lol. Hard to say exactly what it feels like, but I don't think it feels like needles at all. Its not comfortable, no... But I sat for 3 hours on my tree lady. And for your first tattoo most people pick small stuff that doesn't take that long. If you are thinking of having your LOs name done, for example, that's maybe 20 minutes if its just script. All you gotta do is hold still and grin and bear it.
I'd totally be down for a tattoo idea / share thread, even tho I'm only really proud of the tree lady. The other two are small fairly boring

i found it felt like if you were to cut on top of an open wound, or if you had a sunburn and got sliced

That is for the adult version. It must be different for infants if it's compounded. Still a lot though. However, if it's starting to work I would pay whatever in your position to give your sweet baby (and you) some relief!
@dancegurl1118 thanks, I will look into that! I also asked the local baby wearing Facebook and got 30 comments about this amazing oral surgeon that uses a laser but doesn't take insurance. I'm going to call them today. Thanks again!

My doctor said they always try Zantac first because it has fewer side effects, but prilosec is stronger and more effective. We'll stick with generic Zantac as long as it works. I guess my prescription plan is pretty good (despite having crappy high deductible insurance) because a one month supply of the generic zantac cost me 88 cents.
I think I'm going to see if the pharmacy will flavor it next month...I think it costs extra but LO just HATES the way it tastes and tries to spit it out always, which is not helping. Does anyone do this?
First of all, I am AMAZED at how much all you breastfeeding mamas have gone through while still sticking with it! The commitment is amazing. When I found out my babe was losing weight eating I flipped and went immediately to formula, and stopped pumping because at work I can't do it often enough to increase my supply (I was only getting 4 oz a day), at most.
Anyway, we have talked about how much our LOs are eating before, and I will post this on the formula mommas thread, but I feel as though most of the formula mommas come through here as well.
I have a piglet baby. He was late by almost two weeks and born at 9lbs 5 oz, but then lost an entire lb which is why we went to formula. He didn't go back over his birth weight until 4 weeks-it has been a struggle.
Now, however, he eats a ridiculous amount. Almost immediately after the ped said 32 oz was the top end of formula consumption daily, LO started going over. I would say he was eating, until Sat, closer to 34-36 oz every day and 4 oz at every feeding, sometimes 3. Saturday, he went up to 39 oz that day. Yesterday, he was at 42 by the time he went to bed, and took 9 oz in an hour two separate times (but 5 hours apart). Today I made a 4 oz bottle, then he ate 2 more oz within the hour because he was inconsolable and changing the diaper, burping, playing and singing, etc, did not calm him. Food did. So now we are up to 6 oz feeds, and they were four hours apart, so if we keep that pattern today we'll be at 36 oz.
He doesn't spit up crazy amounts, so it looks like his tummy can handle it, but it seems like a LOT OF FOOD considering he is only going to be two months on THursday. If I weigh him by weighing myself, then weighing myself with him and taking the difference, he's 13lbs. We are already in 3-6 month clothes.
Anybody else's LO eating this much? I just don't want it to turn out that I have a goldfish baby who just eats because food is there and can't regulate. Yes I know that sounds silly, haha.

I asked about flavoring too but it wasn't an option. The medicine is minty so there is nothing that can change the taste. I found if I put it towards the back of her mouth on the side, she's more likely to swallow it would instead of spitting it out and not make the poor, awful faces. I also do small amounts at a time instead of the entire dose at once.
LO was eating every 3 hrs during the day, and twice in the middle of the night. Yesterday and the day before she has been eating closer together and woke up 3 times at night. I'm attributing it to another growth spurt. She's 8 weeks old. The only thing is, in the middle of the night when she starts to stir, I get up and nurse before she really starts to cry and wake herself up. The second and third feeding, she barely ate anything. I'm wondering if she just needed a diaper change. We usually change her after she eats. How do you ladies know if LO really needs to eat in the middle of the night, just needs a change, or is just getting scutchy and making noise? I guess the best way to find out is to change her first and see if she is still upset after that. I'm just afraid we'll change her, put her back to sleep, and she'll just wake up in a few minutes wanting food.
@SmashJam I had to look back thru my food log, but I'm creeping up in feedings, too. My guy takes 4oz of formula every feeding, but I also give him the boob before his bottle (I have low supply but am still doggedly determined he gets *some* breastmilk). The math comes out to 26oz of formula per day (5 of the past 7 days) and I don't know how much he gets via the boob but even if its only 1 ounce (which I think its more than that) then that would be 32oz of food a day. If he is getting 2oz per boob session then that's 38oz a day. And here I have been wondering about when to increase to more (tho I don't think he is ready yet. He seems full at the end of his bottle). Granted, I'm not creeping towards 40oz like you are, but I'm awful close to that 36oz line using a conservative estimate of breast milk taken. He will be 9 weeks on Wednesday.
@mellymar this makes me feel better. I try really hard not to over think the whole "should be happening" thing and go with the happy, healthy, weight gaining and pooping healthily measure, but its really hard! When something abnormal happens I'm like, OMG SOMETHING IS WRONG. HE DOESNT HAVE A HYPOTHALAMUS (thats what regulates hunger right?). WHAT WILL WE DO?! lol.
@SmashJam my guy lost over a pound from birth weight too, so I understand how you feel. It goes from 'is he eating enough?' to 'is he eating too much?'. He was so lean and now he has double chins and a baby gut and he feels like he weighs so much! So curious to see what his weight is at his 2m appt next Monday. Since your guy isn't spitting up it seems like he's got the room for it, so I'd keep filling up that tank if I were you. The ped will tell you if he's overweight but unless they do so I'd try not to worry
@smashjam my pediatrician told me that if a baby starts to eat in the high 30's daily, that she would recommend a different formula (I think the one with cereal) to help decrease the ounces by making them feel more full with less. I would talk to your doc for sure. I'm sure he's fine if he's not spitting up, but my doc definitely mentioned this behavior to me at our last visit.
Other fun facts, that a baby's stomach can normally handle their weight, divided by 2, in ounces, in a single feeding. So like, if your LO is 12 pounds, 6 ounces per sitting is probably the max their stomach will hold in one feeding. But again, that was just a quick rule of thumb from the doc and YMMV.
We are also on formula after baby lost 15% of her body weight by day 3! She's 12 weeks old, weighs probably 11.5 lbs and eats about 24-26 ounces per day right now.

LO hates the mint. The pharmacist told us they could flavor it, but when I clarified, they meant "on top of" the mint flavor. Um that would make it even MORE unpalatable for the baby! So yeah we are stuck too. Why mint, if everyone seems to hate it? LO seemed to like the grape Tylenol we gave her the evening of her vaccinations.

That's supposed to be mint? When I smell it it just smells like medicine.
LO loves the taste of her gas drops for some reason, but the face she gives us when we feed her the zantac is so sad. Sometimes I give her gas drops afterwards just to make her happy. I guess I'll ask about flavoring them next month anyway...it can't be any worst than it already is, right?
We've been struggling to get LO to take a bottle for weeks and I've posted about it here before. I know others are having the same problem. I just bought a MAM trainer Sippy cup. It comes with the soft Sippy spout and a faster flow nipple. So far, LO really likes the spout. I think it's because it's so different from the nipple. It's more fun for her and it's not just another bottle being shoved at her. She also likes to "hold" it (she's 10 weeks and sort of lightly grips it with her hands). Just thought I'd pass along for other desperate, bottle-pushing mamas to try! >-
So several weeks ago my LO was having reflux symptoms very soon after I started enfamil vitamin D drops. After a week I took him in to the ped and he was started on Zantac and stopped the vit d drops. His symptoms improved within a couple days so I stopped the Zantac without problems. Yesterday I gave him 1 dose of vitamin D and all those symptoms came back within hours! Something to think about for these babies with all these reflux symptoms if you happen to be giving enfamil vit D drops.
Re: Feeding your LO...tips, concerns, complaints, and accomplishments! 8/3-8/9
@kes166 my LO does that when she feeds and it's her cue that she needs to burp. She also head bobs at the boob at punches my boob with her fist.

I'm just afraid we'll change her, put her back to sleep, and she'll just wake up in a few minutes wanting food.

LO loves the taste of her gas drops for some reason, but the face she gives us when we feed her the zantac is so sad. Sometimes I give her gas drops afterwards just to make her happy. I guess I'll ask about flavoring them next month anyway...it can't be any worst than it already is, right?
