Today is day 5 of LO not pooping. Pretty sure this is because I started supplementing. Her ped had us come in yesterday and instructed me to give her 1oz of prune juice yesterday and 1oz today with a feeding and she will likely have a bowel. No poop yet, just a lot of stinky farts and discomfort.

Anyone have exp with giving a baby prune juice?

  • @katyqv I have prune juice to my LO when he didn't go for a few days. My pedi told me to mix one ounce of water and one ounce of prune juice. I gave him half in the morning and half in the evening. It took about a day for him to have a complete blowout lol
  • @dancegurl1118 I'm so sorry. Its hard to watch them lose weight or not gain. :( I'm hoping your ducts resolve soon. Hopefully the visit with the specialist for the lip tie will help her to help you with the duct situation going forward (not an immediate solution, but long term)

  • @aligons my ped didn't say anything about diluting the prune juice but everything I've read online about it also suggests this. I mixed 1 oz prune juice with about 2 oz breastmilk. Really hoping she has a blowout soon. Maybe a trip to Target is in order.
  • I love feeding from the left.. I hate the right! He hurts my nipple no matter what position... I make sure he has a great latch.. Etc... But right nipple always stings! Then I get shooting pains throughout.., my nipple is fine as far as no cracks, redness.. Nothing.. I just effing hate right nipple .. I wish I could just feed from the left.. Grrrr
  • Anyone's LO go through a period where their appetite goes away? He was guzzling 4-5 ounce bottles every few hours, and for the past few days he has no interest. He will take an ounce or so, then push the bottle away. After 15-20 mins, he is ready for another ounce. It is like he is constantly snacking and not wanting to sit and enjoy a full meal. It's worrying me because he was SUCH a good eater before. Any advice??

I have that same pain in my right breast when I nurse. It's not every time thank god! That's my good supply breast too. The left one is the lazy breast. Not sure what that pain is. I plan on asking doc next week when I have my postnatal visit.

This was my LO yesterday. She snacked all day and then got super fussy in the afternoon. After a few minutes in the swing she had a major blowout. She felt better and then ate like a champ the rest of the evening. I find when she slows down on eating she either has a burp, gas, or is waiting to poop.

How long has the snacking thing been going on for you?
  • @mellymar I think I asked the same question....... Need more info on this dream feed business
  • Baby is cluster feeding every hour from 11a-5 or 6 pm at 5 weeks old. Anybody else dealing with this?
  • @ChardeeMacDennis the dentist said to think about getting the lip tie done but that it was my imperative. Who knows. I'll see how much it costs with my insurance. We just moved and I'm unpaid and my husband starts grad school in 3 weeks so...WE BROKE

Anyone pumping after LO nurses everytime ? I'm still doing this for supply due to LO being a poor eater. I posted in a FB group for some motivation and got terrible responses. Looking for some support. It's like EP'ing (which is hard enough) with an extra 20 min step attached. It's tiring but I'm actually doing ok now, just wondering about long term sustainability

Editing to add I love our nursing time so don't want to cut it out

So we exclusively formula feed since about 3 weeks old. Everyone either talks about baby eating 2 or 4 oz or more. Our baby is at 3. Which can make it tricky for measuring but I don't really want to measure out more and have her waste it or eat it and spit it up because she isn't hungry for it
What do you ladies do? Make the next ounce up and waste it or just make what they have been eating no matter what. Stupid question I know lol

We did formula for a week or so at the beginning, so my memory might be off, but isn't mixed formula (not eaten yet) good for 24 hrs in the fridge? If so, I'd make 6 oz up at once split it into 2 bottles. Save yourself a few minutes at the next feeding too, since you'll have the bottle ready.

@katyertl Thetis is exactly what we do. Judging by how much pumped milk I have in the fridge, I'll pre make 6 or 8 oz in a sealed container. Then pour what is needed when feeding. I start with pumped milk and if DD is still looking for more I'll give her the pre mixed stuff. This is also super helpful for when you are upping how much she eats. Well give her an extra 1/2 ounce instead of wasting any. According to the similac container as long as it's not warmed it will be good for 24 hours.

I've been trying to do the same, but LO makes it difficult. I'm only able to do maybe once or twice a day? Does your LO let you just put him/her down while you pump?
  • @janit368 I did this for a period of time but you are right it's definitely hard to maintain. I stuck with it long enough to establish supply and for LO to get the hang of nursing and then gradually cut back. Now I will pump during peak milk production hours to get enough to freeze and for bottles at night to give the boobs a break from nursing.

Things that may make it easier include having multiple sets of flanges and shields for the pump and doing it once LO is settled so you aren't interrupted.

Although sometimes I used to dread the pumping schedule sticking with it was rewarding. Even 10 minutes per side was sufficient for me (but I would increase to 15/20 if I saw that milk was still plentiful at the end of the 10minutes).

    Best wishes!

  • So my LO is 6 weeks old and has had an awesome latch, but lately he's wiggling all over the place and his latch has gotten really shallow. His hands are everywhere and he's arching his back. I take him off and put him back on when it gets shallow, but before I know it, he's moved again. I've tried swaddling him during feelings but he goes nuts trying to get his arms free. Any tips from anyone else? I feel like I'm starting a really bad habit if I'm letting him nurse with a bad latch, but in the middle of the night I'm usually just desperate to be done so I can go back to bed
  • @janit368 at one point I was pumping after every feeding to increase supply, buy I'm not anymore. It was too disheartening for me - anytime I pumped, whether it was after a feeding or when I should have been doing a feeding (and thus should have gotten out more milk since baby hadn't taken any yet), I only ever got such a miniscule amount it wasn't even worth saving. I just ended up putting a nipple on the container and giving it to my LO right then. And it took SO freaking long to pump, pretty much my whole day was breastfeed, pump, maybe get a chance to go pee and hopefully get a snack, then repeat. So I feel ya, but gave up on that. It depressed me. I dont know if it helped with supply, now i just let LO get on the boob whenever he wants and hope that helps my supply. I have to supplement with formula anyway, no amount of pumping for supply will be able to make me stop that. Glad to hear you were able to get some results, tho.

  • Anyone here cut out food for LO? How long before you saw improvement? It's been a week of no dairy, gluten, or beans with only mild improvement. Although she has the worst smelling gas and hasn't pooped in 3 days, so I'm willing to go another week.
    @henrytviii
  • @rjc2986 I tuck my guy's bottom arm under/around me and when he's clawing at me, I hold his top arm gently in place against my chest. This usually calms him down to focus but not always.
I've also given up worrying about his latch unless it is painful. It kind of changes throughout the day, so if he's happy and I'm happy, I leave everything alone.

    Good luck!

I cut out dairy due to LO having dark green stools around the 1 week mark, and it resolved in 24 hours. Whether it was the dairy or just LO in general adjusting to my milk coming in we'll never know. I'm slowly reintroducing now and she's handling it fine, though I'm really only eating foods with traces of dairy (prepared foods) and one or two servings of cheese a day. No actual milk or anything like ice cream or butter yet. I do almond milk and coconut milk products instead.
  • Holy crap! So I was concerned with how much my twins were getting breastfeeding. I looked online and found a baby scale for only $35. I thought that was a decent price. So I'm doing weighed feedings. This morning one twin took in 6.5 ounces! She's now passed out with a full tummy. They slept from 11 last night until 7 this morning. And I managed to pump an additional 3 ounces from that breast. That's my good side. My other twin took in 3 ounces and I pumped 2 more from my bad side. I have no idea how I'll keep up with that once I start back at work.

  • @DolphinLover2002 that's insane! What scale did you buy?
  • It's from Walmart.com. I love it! Gives me peace of mind. I can check their weight anytime without leaving the house. 100% worth the money for me. No trips to the LC or Dr to check weight and do feeds.

I started cutting out dairy last Thursday. I'm not sure if it's helping yet. She's had mucus in her poop for weeks and bad gas pains. She's also super fussy while eating at night. Her poop is the same so far. I accidentally ate dairy once this week at dinner and 6 hours later she was writhing in pain from gas. Not sure if it was related? I bought gas drops. But I'm nervous to use medication on her. She does get Zantac. I'm going dairy free for 2 more weeks.
  • LO was exclusively BF-ing pumped milk since birth (too early of a preemie to suckle by himself) - keeps having bouts of blood in stool, even after multiple changes to my already healthy diet...on a trial of soy/dairy free formula now and blood gone within the first day...thinking about throwing in the towel on pumping since my toxic sludge is poisoning my baby...I just don't get it - the formula label doesn't have shit on my healthy eating...it's all garbage; how can he be responding so well to garbage, but he has issues with the food God intended him to have?
  • I just made an appointment for a second opinion for her tongue and lip tie. My mama instinct is continuing to tell me something is wrong and she has huge nursing blisters on her bottom lip that look so painful. Literally the blisters take up half of her lips. This is going to cost a pretty penny but for her it's worth it

  • @kezdk have you talked to your peditrician about this? Mine told me a little bit of streaks can be normal. We went through a phase when she turned 1 month where it was a little off. Not sure how much you are talking about though.
  • For moms giving Zantac...how quickly did you see results?
  • @rklinge0 yes, we have done the whole 9 yards with his doctor...and it is just specks and streaks that come and go - sometimes a little worse than others. Since he is so young she is concerned about it becoming an infection. I am just at my wits end with pumping...if he could suckle his meals I would be a little more tempted to wait it out. The X-Rays showed a LOT of gas in his belly (indicative of food sensitivities/allergies) and the blood is mucus-y....also indicating food sensitivity. It has to be something in my diet...but the more they limit me, the less I eat, and that is no good for BFing either. My poor boy was just SO miserable with all that gas and spent all his time crying hysterically - on the junk food formula, he is doing much better and sleeping more soundly. It just makes me feel selfish for pushing so hard for him to drink breast milk because I think it's best..,perhaps not for him I guess
  • @kezdk I can't imagine how frustrating that must be. I hope you're able to find the best solution and make peace with it.
  • Here we go- mastitis round 2. Just when I thought we had the breast feeding down! So bummed
  • My little guy was eating every 3 hours a few weeks ago, now at 6 weeks he's 'snacking' every 1.5-2 hours, but only for 5-10 minutes. I'm EBF. Anyone else have a grazer like this?
  • @MurLindzz I have a snacker too. He will usually do a good feed when he wakes up in the morning, then about an hour and a half later wants to ear again. I think he's just trying to soothe himself because he always falls asleep and doesn't eat much. Then he snacks for the rest of the day, never seeming to fill up enough to go longer between feedings. Starting yesterday I'm trying to break him of the habit of needing to nurse to sleep for his and DH's sake (will be taking care of him when I go back to work, 12 hr shifts). It's been rough, I've never really experienced him crying before because I always just stuck a boob in his mouth.
  • @kezdk I feel you!! We personally don't eat any processed food at home except for a few items with limited ingredients like Lara bars... I would be majorly bummed to put LO on formula just because it doesn't fit with our "beliefs". That being said, if it's what is best for him right now that does make it good. You can always try to keep supply up and reintroduce BM at 6 mo. I've heard they tolerate things better then. Plus you can start to give him some healthy whole foods too then. I can't wait to give LO fermented cod liver oil. I'm a food nerd ;)

It may be cluster feeding rather than straight snacking...there is a growth spurt typically at 6 weeks. I didn't notice my 6 week old cluster feeding but holy hell did it interrupt her sleep regimen.
  • I've tried to dream feed but she won't latch.

Am I the only one that EBF that loves the fact I can pump a bottle and let DH feed the baby. It makes me feel so much less tied down. I love nursing him, but I feel like pumping allows me to have the best of both worlds!

I'm not a hard core pumper but I always keep a bottle in the fridge for this reason. It was awesome when my mum was here as I could go for a nap during the day without any planning. It's nice to have that little bit of freedom too.
  • I used a bottle of pumped milk last night for our dream feed. It worked!
  • So I have been dream feeding before I knew it was a "thing" lol... I always get LO out of crib before Dh and I go to bed and give at least 3 oz of EBM through a bottle. He stays asleep but chugs it.. Maybe that's why our nights are so good? I started trying to do this with putting him on the breast, but he would just fall asleep.. Bottle works great for us and do it each night
