Re: Daytime sucks!

  • @JessHeppell they're pretty pricey try craigslist or even Facebook has a baby wearing swap nationwide where you can buy used ones!

  • One thing that I have been doing that has been working is this: I swaddle him for all sleep (naps too) in a swaddleme. Then I put on my white noise app on my phone (I use rain) pretty loud and stick it in my bra so it will be close to his ear and louder than his cries. I then put his head on my shoulder and walk as I pat his back (slow like a heartbeat). I also sing a lullaby into his ear but not sure if he can even hear it over the white noise but it makes me happy. I walk until he is asleep and then put him in the rock and play. I move the white noise under it as well so there is no break and then I continue to pat him for a while too. Then I slowly step away. I am also working on not walking him all the way to sleep so he learns to fall asleep on his own but that has been hard. He still wakes ups throughout the nap and then I just start the process again. Only thing that really works for naps...
  • I NEED HELP -_- this kid wont sleep anywhere longer than 5-10 minutes unless he is on my chest. its sweet and i love him but i cant get anything done during the day. how do i get this kid to actually nap anywhere else but on me? X_X im about to lose my mind
Prefacing this by saying that my LO is pretty go-with-the-flow; HOWEVER, there was a week or two around 3-4 weeks where, like your LO, she only wanted to sleep on my chest. That being said - with my LO, any time she hasn't liked something (bouncer seat, pack n play, crib, play gym, etc.), we've gone with small doses and worked our way up. Eventually, she's gotten used to all of them (or, as is the case with the crib, is still in the process of getting used to them but is making progress). As some moms have said further up in this thread, sometimes, if I need to get stuff done, I just let her cry. Eventually, she's adjusted to almost all of her "I don't like this thing my mom is making me lie in" things.

Again, she has a really easy going disposition and every kid is different so I hope this doesn't come off as stating the obvious, especially if you already have tried just letting your LO sit in the things and cry for short (keyword: short) periods of time. But eventually, he's going to get used to it, right? He's not going to be a year old and still sleeping on your chest. So there will be a light at the end of the tunnel, and, for us, the best way to move things along has been to just expose her to the "scary" places a little bit at a time. Good luck! :)

  • its not that he doesnt like things. hes very laid back, so he will sit in his swing or bouncy seat, but he will just sit there. and i want him to nap so he doesnt get overtired and cranky. he is constantly falling asleep on the boob (he has a tongue tie and lip tie) so im thinking he just tires himself out although not much work is needed to open the flood gates of booby juice. i just hope it improves -_-
  • ^ my LO does the same thing. He is fine just about anywhere, but he won't sleep there. He just wakes right up and looks around or starts talking.

Ahh, gotcha. Well I hope it gets better! Good luck!

  • So, so sorry @mellymar :( I know that cat was a super important part of your family and this day must have been a very difficult one. Hoping your LO will be able to distract you with some smiles and cuddles!

It was Silt, the older black one (the Big Man). We had taken him to the vet yesterday because he hadn't eaten for 2 days, and was very weak. They did labwork and it showed he had an infection, probably in his urinary tract, his temp was really low, and his kidney values were very high (kidney failure). The vet sent us home to try and recover him with nursing care - giving antibiotics and fluids and force feeding. Well I did his treatments this morning, but he threw up about an hour later, so I picked up some anti nausea meds from the vet and gave them to him and while waiting for them to kick in so I could force feed him again, he had a seizure. Seizure + kidney values + not eating 2 days + weakness + pretty sure he hadn't urinated for 2 days... I'm not a vet but I can do the math. I've never seen an animal present like that and have it work out. We had to take him to an emergency place an hour away (our vet had closed an hour prior) and after reviewing everything with this vet lady who had just come on shift (what a way to start your day, huh?) she agreed the only Hail Mary option we had was hospitalization, and the chances of success were much less than ideal.

He was fading and tired and you could tell he didn't feel well. We helped him to cross into the clearing at the end of the path.

And now there is only Samurai.

  • Oh no @mellymar I'm so very sad for you. I know how much your fur babies mean to you. Sending you hugs and condolences. It sounds like you made the right call though, as hard as it was. ❤️
  • @mellymar I'm so happy you were able to recognize his pain and help him into the clearing.

  • As I tecently said to DH, the nights are log, and the days are longer...

Lo is finally started by to nap at 10 weeks -- plenty of days she is up for 12 hours straight with only two 2 minute cat naps. Those days were the worst. She atill rarely wants to nap, but I have a schedule of trying to get her to nap once around 9am, then around 1pm, then around 4.

Here's my advice: download babytracker, keep track of what they do, you'll see a pattern emerge, and then you'll be able To hopefully see the day as manageable chunks instead of one continuous "omfg".
  • So sorry to hear about Silt, @mellymar. Losing a pet is never easy.
  • So sorry @mellymar . Pets take a piece of our heart when they go :(
  • I'm so sorry melly =((
  • @mellymar So sorry to hear about your loss.
  • So sorry about your cat @mellymar My time hop just reminded me that we put my childhood car down 2 years ago. It's so hard and I hope it gets easier for you. I'm sure it was very comforting for him to have you there.

LO slept through the night 2 nights in a row. Of course that means she wants to wake up at 6 instead of her normal 7:30. I didn't fall asleep until 2 last night (even though she was fast asleep), so today is going to be very long.

  • @mellymar so sorry to hear about your kitty it's the worst to have to go through that :( rip Silt knowing he's in a better place! Cyber hugs
  • Oh no @mellymar! I'm so sorry! Hugs
  • I'm so sorry, @mellymar
  • Super fussy baby today. Is there a growth spurt at 12 weeks? Because LO turns 12 weeks tomorrow and if there is, we've hit it full force :(

    There's a Leap between 11.5 and 12.5 weeks

My app says it starts at some point between those two periods. Sorry I didn't make that clearer! You've sensed it, though. Apparently babies can be "withdrawn" during this one, so don't be upset if you notice that. Extra sucking on their hands is also another "symptom" along with fussiness, and wanting to nurse or cuddle more.
    Good luck!!

Well this explains a lot! LO won't sleep and is sucking on everything like a total weirdo. Was 12 weeks on Saturday.

  • I am confused now on the due date vs birth dates for the leaps. I can't decide if we are at leap 2 or 3 and they overlap since he was 3 weeks early...

Ok, yeah, we are definitely there. She's sucking on her hands like crazy and has been super cranky. I'm more than ok with extra cuddles if she wants them though! Thanks for the info!

Wonder Weeks. It's based on a book and the app was like $1.99 I think. I don't normally pay for apps but am glad I got this one. It tells you about all the Leaps in the first year, signs of the leap, and what brain development is happening. I've found it to be pretty accurate, but my experience is limited as I'm a FTM and this will be LO's third leap.

It says to use due date. In the app, you can enter for multiple children, so maybe just enter one for due date and one for birth date (eg, first name and middle name), and see which you find to be more accurate.

I think there was a thread where others chimed in on which they found more accurate. Will see if I can find it...

ETA: sorry, rereading your post, my answer is totally inappropriate. That's a frustrating fluke in the timing, I'm sorry! For me, it's less about 100% accuracy and more about knowing the signs when LO is developing, so I don't feel like I'm just taking crazy pills. It's nice validation.
  • @mellymar aww I'm so sorry
  • The starts of her leaps are always atrocious. She is so out of sorts today enough for me to question if she's sick. Nope just leap day... No napping, snacking all day, whining if I leave the room...booooo girly.

Not leap related but she had her second blowout of the week where I've had to toss her outfit. This one included a trail of poop from the couch to her changing table upstairs.. =))

  • @virginiaunicorn11 I agree. It's so awesome to know they are leaping. Totally keeps me sane. I keep eyeballing that super long one coming up... That's when I'll knows where we are at as there is no overlap. I do have 2 profiles set up, Sept or Oct. we shall see
  • LO is in his second leap and having a growth spurt and it's like I don't even know this kid today. He gets his shots tomorrow, too. This is going to be one hell of a week. Ugh
  • So do you think babywearing will make a child spoiled? I know you can't spoil a newborn. Our LO is going through her 2nd leap and will scream bloody murder until she's held. I don't want her to continue to be like this but for sanity sake wearing her quiets her down and she takes great naps too. Any thoughts??

I always worry about this but honestly, all the people who write the books and give advice about holding/napping aren't going to come and help you get through the day while your LO screams. I try to get at least 1 (2 if I am lucky) naps in the RNP verse on me in the rocker/carrier and call that a win (even though I am manually rocking him half the time since he wakes up every 10 -20 minutes no matter what I do!). The sleep training book I will be using when he hits 4 months advises to just do what you need to do to get them to sleep at this point because all habits can be undone pretty easily up until the 4 month mark (sleep easy solution is the book).

@katyertl Baby wearing is literally the only thing keeping me sane during these leaps. I remember growth spurts as a teenager being awful, I can't imagine what they're like when it's literally all you know for a week. If wearing him is what it takes to keep him happy, and in turn me happy, I'm going to do it. Babies can't form habits yet, and if they get into a routine it's easy to break when it's this early.

A note: unless I have something to get done I try to rock him, feed, and swaddle for a good while before I put him in the wrap. I try his "ideal" nap stuff THEN wrap him up when it fails. Today he took one good normal nap and is currently in the wrap for his second.

    ETA: They're, Their, There....ugh.
