Re: Nighttime Sucks (But it gets better!) - A support thread

  • After every feeding LO gets the hiccups. He had heart surgery 5 days ago and he just screams because it hurts his chest and I try to soothe him but nothing works. I feel so bad for him because I feel like there is nothing I can do for him till they pass. I burp him between breasts and if I use a bottle I burp him halfway through but that doesn't seem to help. Anyone else have issues with their LO getting hiccups?

Sometimes a pacifier helps too! My lo gets the hiccups everytime. She had them all the time on the inside too. I looked it up and sometimes feeding more or giving the pacifier helps stop them quicker. I will try the gripe water next.

I have had the most success with nursing a little more

I used the gripe water again this am, even less of an amount they tell you to use on the package and she stopped immediately and even her fussing stopped
  • Someone replaced the little girl that slept 4 hours at a time at night with one that wakes up every two hours. On the dot.

I had it so easy :(
  • My daughter has been asleep pretty much since 1. I had my sister come visit and I should have slept while she was here b/c now this nugget will be awake all night. She is out! I've tried to play with her feet and arms and she's so tired! Lord
  • You guys. I slept thru my alarm to wake up and feed LO on the 3 hour mark. LO did, too. To be fair to both of us, however - he did have a snack about 3 and half hours ago. Just not a for real 'feeding'.

    Nighttime sucks

  • Tonight LO just doesn't want to go to sleep- he always gets up at 3 and normally falls asleep on the boob and we co-sleep from that point until the morning but tonight I put him in the bassinet after he fell asleep and he stayed asleep in there for 10 minutes then he woke up hungry again. Looks like he'll be sleeping in the bed with me after all, not that I don't love the cuddles but it would be nice to have the bed to myself- nighttime sucks
  • Night time sucks when your baby and husband have both been fast asleep since midnight and you're still wide awake at 2. I know she just going to get up in an hour to eat, so what's the point of even trying to sleep now?

  • @mellymar is he past his birth weight? Most pedis say once they are past their birth weight not to wake them to feed!
TTC: 1/2014 BFP: 9/24 EDD: 6/8/2015 Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.
  • I guess I'll see the sun rise tonight (today?). And all of this insomnia happens on the night my DD decides to sleep like an angel.

We're getting there. Last visit to the peds he had 8oz to go back to birth weight, and that was Friday. He was gaining about 2 oz a day after his mad weight loss (he went from birth weight 7#8oz down to 6#4oz. Was 6#15.5oz on Friday) so he is probably there now, but no way to confirm until next Wednesday. So I don't feel terrible about it, but at the same time I feel like I let the ped down by not following his instructions. Ya feel me?

  • We had really fussy nights starting around 2 weeks old. He just ate all the time and I was exhausted. I started pumping and now H is giving him bottles at night while I pump. It seems to be still working and DS is 4 weeks old. It's a bit time consuming for me but he is sleeping a lot better and feeding at night isn't taking as long so we're all getting some sleep.
  • ^^^^ 2 weeks must be a fussy stage. I'm going through the same thing.
  • I am at almost two weeks and dealing with a MUCH fussier baby. While I am sorry others are dealing with this too (we need sleep!!) it makes me feel better that this seems normal, as when he is fussy I think to myself: is it my diet? Do I have to give up gluten? Does he have gas issues? Is he in pain? etc etc.

Tonight was the first night in awhile that was awful and the first downright scary night. LO had mucus in his nose from it being so humid(i think) and he couldnt clear it, so he projectile spit up like, 2.5 hours after his last feeding at 2am. He was crying so hard that when he spit up he kind of siezed up and couldn't clear the crap out of his mouth, so he was like, still and not breathing for like, 1/4 of a second while he gagged. I freaked out and yelled for my husband and LO eventually calmed down and ate but I totally panicked. I called the pedi and she said it was the mucus and told me to get a humidifier and saline drops for his nose, and use the bulb aspirator thingy, and that should help him breathe  easier and avoid spit up due to having mucus difficulties.

It was awful, but apparently it tired him out...he's sleeping silently right now!
  • @SmashJam look up the Nosa Frieda snot sucker on Amazon. It is amazing. My DH is obsessed with it. I think it's a guy thing. Does work much better than the bulb though. My LO was crazy snotty the first few weeks and I got freaked with his snoring and mouth breathing.
  • @SmashJam aww, poor baby and so scary for mama! So glad he's ok. My guy has projectile vomited several times and I hate it!! Hope the humidifier prevents this for you again.
  • @SmashJam we went through that too, so scary, we now keep a bulb aspiration in each room we also have the nose frieda . LO is now almost 4 weeks and it has improved, it was bad around the 1-2 week mark

    Love the Nosa Frieda!!
  • @janit368 thanks for the recommendation! I do feel like I am really, really bad at using the bulb, like I am incapable of making it pop back out after I squeeze to suck out the snot, haha. And thanks for the support-its really nice to know that this is something other people have experienced-I thought something was horribly wrong @virginiaunicorn11 and @laurens119

It's 4:00 am here and poor LO just had a big spit up... Because my boobs were getting engorged and I let him pig out on both sides. I knew it was risky. He normally only gets one boob per feed.
He doesn't mind spitting up, and he went right back to sleep. And I feel better...
    Evil mom?

Nope you're not evil at all. I do the same thing when I'm engorged and don't feel like pumping.

Edited to add words because it posted before I meant to.

Had the best sleep I've had since LO was born (as in like...3 hour ish stretches) tonight (it's still only 5:20, but already best!) but feel massively guilty about it because it only happened because LO was sleeping on me all night, and I just worry so much about how safe that is. :(
  • Something must have been in the air bc my girl slept from 1030-2 then 3ish to 6. Waking up just once in the night vs 12 and then 3? Sold! Could have been she screamed for her entire bath at 9:00 and wore herself out!
  • Family came in late last night and lo passed out at 11:30 woke up at 3:15 and went back to sleep I'll call that a win. She is definitely starting to realize day and night and is awake so mich more of the day. I'm going to get her up now because she stinks and I'm already up pumping. Woot for Los sleeping and us mamas getting some well earned rest.

Not sure if this will help some of you mommas who's LOs refuse to sleep unless they're being cuddled... But my girls are going through an, "I absolutely, positively refuse to sleep in the packnplay and will scream bloody murder if you put me in it" phase. So for the past couple days we've been using their bassinets full time. Usually it's packnplay in the living room during the day, and bassinets at night. But currently, they're having nothing to do with the packnplay. Babies can be weird sometimes! Maybe it's just a matter of trying a different sleeper?

For the past 4 nights, LO has been ridiculously fussy, like, scream at the top of her lungs fussy, at the 10 o'clock hour -- right as we're all getting ready for bed. DH is back to work so he's been responsible for putting LO to bed at night so that I can have some time to relax/get some sleep, which has been impossible lately because of her fussiness. Anyone else experiencing these on schedule fussy episodes with LO?

On a positive, LO let mama get some sleep last night! She had one 3 hr stretch and then two 2 hr stretches of sleep. Yay baby girl!
  • LO had such a good night... Prob bc he tired himself out screaming during witching hour and bath time lol. He slept 11-4:45, and 5:15-8:30, all in his crib. Momma is feeling so well rested!!

Anyone else have babies who love sleeping on their belly? I know it's a huge no no, but he is so comfy and he cries when I put him on his back. He also moves his head from side to side so I don't worry about him choking if he spits up. Am I crazy?? Crib is clear of blankets and stuffed animals.

  • So LO has been discouraging her poor dad since her witching hour (which I didn't even think of to blame!) is from about 5-9 when hubby gets home from work basically and tries to have quality time with her. But he's been feeling like he can't console her and has to pass her off to me. I feel horrible for him that he feels lost on how to make her feel better.

@kristenk727 our baby loves to sleep on her side. For naps during the day I let her since I'm always watching her but at night since we use a swaddle she seems to be ok on her back with that
  • We had a good night too! LO slept from 11-4, and then 5-7:30, I'll take it!! She is 4 weeks old!

This is totally normal, commonly called the witching hour. Lots of mom's here are dealing with this. No good solution but they do grow out of it!

We have had a screaming, sleep fighting little man between about 8-9p the past few nights. He is clearly tired and will fall asleep for a couple minutes at a time, only to wake up screaming after we put him down. I usually just try changing positions, swaddling, un-swaddling, and getting him on the boob frequently. Sometimes nothing works and I have to just put him down for a minute. But it's usually the feeding that finally gets him to fall asleep and stay asleep.
