You know what's crazy and I don't understand... I tested after dinner at about 1:45 after eating. I didn't like the number (130's) so I decided to wait the other 15 minutes and test at exactly 2hrs like I'm supposed to do. 105. WTAF? I maybe had something on my hands when I first tested? Can 15 minutes make that big of a difference?
My dietician said I could test at either 1 or 2 hours. My numbers always look better at 2 hours so that's what I've been doing. But has this sort of thing happened to anyone else? Was it probably just sugars on my hands or something?
@whitfry are you using an alcohol pad before you test? My diabetes educator said to wipe the surface first with a tissue, soap and water or an alcohol pad. I got a box of alcohol pads individually wrapped at my grocery store for $2 and I use those. She made it sound important for that very reason. She even mentioned to make sure I didn't have lotion on my skin. Good chance you had something on your finger that caused that number.
When do you guys check your sugars? I check 2 hours after eating. Also, clean hands are super important. I once cut up veggies and checked I was at 167!!!! After washing I was down to 93.
I check as soon as I get up and 2 hrs after each meal.
@Whitfry when I first met with the dietitian she told me 120 and below and then the first time I saw My GD dr she said 140 and below so I just go buy what the dr says
Morning, ladies! I've got a growth scan today and I'm nervous. I have no idea what to expect. Last Tuesday at 29+1 I was measuring at 32 which would place her 3 weeks ahead . I'm so scared of finding out what is going on/needs to be done.
My Dr wants to keep my numbers under 95 for fasting and 140 the rest of my meals which has been fairly decent. Once a week I have a number that spikes way above that making me just say "Fuck it"for the rest of that day. I'm tired of reading labels for carbs! Breakfast under 30g, snacks around 15g, lunch and dinner under 40-60g, it's a lot to take in on a daily basis on top of everything else. I worry with every meal about the baby and if what I'm eating is going to make her keep growing too big. I'm feeling frustrated today if you couldn't tell .
@jarrard1983 I don't know if your morning fasting is off due to the time frame of dinner. I don't eat until close to 9pm. I just end up having my after dinner snack in the space between lunch and dinner instead. My day: coffee at 9, breakfast at 10, snack at 12/1, lunch at 2/3, snack at 4/5, second snack at 6/7, dinner at 9. I've learned to try and use my small snacks to help space out my meals. I'm finding almonds to be the best snack for me and keep me full longer. Idk if that would help but I'd figure I'd let you know how I'm trying to handle my numbers.

Good luck on your growth scan today! I have one next Thursday. I was told by the tech that the u/s can measure several weeks off. So I've been asking his estimated weight and what percentile he's in for growth. The percentile number makes me feel better for some reason. I hope everything goes well for you, please keep us updated!
All you ladies getting growth ultrasounds are lucky. I haven't had an ultrasound since my anatomy scan at 20 weeks. I asked my Dr at my last appointment when I would have another one and she said not until 32 weeks, so I still have another month. She was measuring 6 days behind at my AS and my fundal height has only been a week ahead every appointment so hopefully she's growing okay. It just makes me nervous having GD and my son was IUGR last pregnancy. I just wanna know her growth is okay
Im supposed to be under 95 for fasting and under 120 2 hrs after each meal. But my PA friend who works for my OB said they really like us under 100. But I asked my OB if she would tell me what level she wanted me at or the diabetes educator and she said the diabetes educator would tell me because they worked together on the program. So subconsciously, I try to stay below 100 but try not to beat myself up if it's over that.
Today they put me on insulin before breakfast and dinner, and I'll continue taking insulin at night. I'm just so frustrated. I've lost three lbs since dieting, so I'm following it pretty well, obviously my body just doesn't agree with pregnancy.
Last night we had to go to labor and delivery because I felt like I was having contractions. If I was having any, they were very mild. The baby is fine and the cervix was closed. I'm so terrified that I'm going to go into preterm labor.
I'm also upset that all I want other than a healthy baby is chocolate fudge cake from big boys. Those two don't go together well and a healthy baby is a lot more important than cake... And booze. I don't know how people cope with their feelings if they can't eat, drink of medicate them away. I'm a mess.

It could be a few different things. You could have had some contaminating sugars on your hands, or if your hands were damp (usually from washing or sweat) the numbers could be too low.
The most consistent procedure for me has been to use an alcohol swipe on the finger, and wait a minute or so until the skin is totally dry. Hand washing works too, but it can take a little longer for the skin to completely dry. Then after the prick, I squeeze out a bead of blood, wipe it off with a clean kleenex, and squeeze out another bead for the test.
I've also noticed that sometimed I can get different sugar readings from different hands (contamination?), so for follow-up readings I try to take from the same finger or the one next to it.
My dietitian initially wanted me to test first thing in the morning and after every meal, and wanted my numbers to be below 120 after 1 hour, and below 90 for fasting. After reading here and elsewhere, the post-meal numbers seems awfully strict to me. After talking with my OB, she agreed, and now I am to be below 140 after an hour. Much more doable.
My growth u/s isn't scheduled until 36 weeks. This makes me nervous due to my cervical issue; I'm not sure if I'll even make it that far. So I have no idea how LO is measuring, since he hasn't been measured since week 20. And my OB didn't even do a fundal measurement until my last appointment.
I do start twice weekly NSTs next week, so hopefully those will put my mind at ease.
My numbers have to be below 89 for fasting, and below 120 2 hours after every meal! My numbers have been high the past few fastings and I knew it was coming because they told me to expect it but I haven't called to get my insulin increased yet, I need to do that like now. Good thing I came on here!
@stefmxo My OB said the baby doesn't like it when it goes to high or drops too low. She didn't elaborate but I can't imagine one number would do any harm. Don't sweat it. I've had two days of bad numbers after 2 good weeks. I'm totally discouraged today because I don't break over and I eat very healthy. If I eat the allotted carbs per meal, I am always high. So I'm honestly playing the trial and error game and it's sucking.
My scan went well I guess. I'm not sure how to digest some of the information. The baby is healthy and has some serious chubby cheeks already. She weighs 4 lbs and is in the 85th percentile (only 15 out of 100 babies will be bigger then her at the rate she is growing) currently measuring 2 weeks ahead. Dr thinks we can get my diet back in control to help regulate her weight and get her back on track. No wonder I'm experiencing a lot of RLP and hip pain so quick. My body is struggling to handle the rapid weight from her growing this early. Eh, I'm just at a loss with his to handle it all.

My numbers have been under 90 every morning. Lunch under 130 and dinner is where I struggle. With dinner I normally am under 140 but have about once a week where I go anywhere from 160-180.

@ohana112610 I shot up to 170 after I drank what I think was regular pop instead of diet!!! I've been below 120 each time so I was shocked to see it so high. Totally discouraging.
This happened to me the other day. 178. I nearly cried. But I don't think one bad reading will necessarily cause permanent damage. It's the long-term exposure to high amounts of insulin that create problems with baby's pancreas and weight. So if you're mostly on track, an accident here and there won't be the end of the world. Just think about how much better you're doing now than before you had your diagnosis! At least this is something we can be proactive about.
@stefmxo I just remembered... at my last appointment, I told my OB about my numbers dropping dramatically after 2 hours. She said it's one of the things that separates gestational diabetes from "regular" diabetes. The former includes blood sugar spikes that typically fall quickly, while the latter generally remains high.
Dinner was chicken cacciatore. I pretty much ate a bunch of pasta...only had a reading of 90.....this doesn't make sense (cue head spinning in confusion). Now I'm going to eat a little dreamer almond bar because Fuck it my numbers were good enough, right?

I had a meeting with the nurse practitioner at the diabetes clinic today and learned some really interesting stuff that I thought some of you girls would like to hear about.
She said that occasional spikes happen, and an alarming spike once in awhile won't hurt the baby. She also said that you will see spikes if you are stressed out, and that your fasting number can be high if you didn't sleep well the night before. I never knew that about the stress or sleeping, so I thought that was really interesting.
She also said that if you know you're going to blow your diet, you should walk a little while before and/or after your meal, because that can help your numbers drop.
Finally, she said that in her experience most women's sugar levels are wildly fluctuating from 28-36 weeks and that if you can keep it fairly steady until 36 weeks it often levels out for people after that. Not always, but often. So I took heart from that.
So I felt like I learned a lot today. Also, I was going to start a new check in thread but since this one is still so active I figured I'd wait until next week if that's cool with everyone.

This makes me feel a lot better since my fasting number hasn't been below 90 in 2-3 weeks and I haven't had a good night's sleep since June.

Don't feel too bad. Yesterday I ate two donuts in a delicious fit of rebellion. I'm not sorry, but my numbers were shit for lunch.
ETA: and I've given myself permission to guzzle reasonable amounts of diet soda to make up for everything else I'm not allowed to have.
I check as soon as I get up and 2 hrs after each meal.
Mine just said to wash my hands, she didn't mention alcohol swabs. But I might get some now, lol. That messed with my head yesterday.
@stefmxo
I test at 2 hours. My sugars always seem to look better at 2 than at 1.
Mine wants me at below 130 at an hour and under 120 at two. I wonder where they come up with these numbers.
What's everybody else's threshold?
