  • My insomnia is back. Not as bad as pregnancy, but almost as bad as it was before I got married. It's been taking me up to an hour to fall asleep, and with getting up in the middle of the night then repeating the process, momma doesn't get much sleep. :(

  • Anyone know of a good substitute for butter when baking? From everything I've read, coconut oil seems to be a pretty decent all around substitute, but doesn't that make everything taste like coconut?

Edit: I should have mentioned a good non-dairy substitue... Kinda makes a huge difference!
I've heard people using applesauce to replace butter in recipes.

@Xxlilies‌ Go to the dog park? Or just for a walk. Take a book to a park or coffee shop. Maybe a picnic. Feed the ducks at a pond. Go swimming at a local pool or beach if you have one. Visit the botanical gardens. Go to open houses in your dream neighborhood and pretend you are super rich and buying for your growing family.
Coffee shop is an awesome idea . My LO always sleeps when I take him anywhere so it would be safe.
I used to go to the dog park daily but now that i have LO I cant handle it alone. I have 2 american bulldogs and one is only a year old so he's slightly energized.
THe only mansion I know of in my city is the one from Billy Madison :)

@xxlilies I have the same problem on days when it's just the two of us. When I have DS1 home, we do lots of free play date type stuff with other moms and kids, but I feel strange doing it with DS2 since he doesn't care much. Is the weather nice enough to do some outside stuff with LO? I like to go to the park or just go for a walk around our neighborhood.
I feel the same way regarding the mom and kid stuffs. Theres stuff going on at the Y and library for his age group but i really feel 8 weeks is too young for him to participate yet
the weather is nice lately so our idea of excitement has been a walk to nearby plaza , grocery store , grabbing a latte and walking back home.

I use applesauce in place of butter or oil. When I do it for brownies and cookies, it does change the consistency quite a bit and it doesn't taste the same, but I don't mind. I also use it in banana bread, which I think tastes awesome with the applesauce sub and so much less fat!

Are you just looking to replace the butter to go non dairy? Earth Balance makes a nondairy, soy free "butter" that tastes great and you use the same in recipes.

@fireflygirl12‌ what do you do for a living? I know 4 people who are pregnant right now 3 have just recently announced. I'm irrationally jealous. What the hell is wrong with me? I'm enjoying Lucas so much I don't want a baby right this second, but I want one soon!
I do event planning/project management for the major software company located in the Seattle Area.

I feel the same way. I'm still iffy about having a third, but whenever I see a new little squish, I get all mushy inside. LO is just growing too fast!
  • @colleenswerb YAY that the swing is working! It's so nice to get a break from having a baby attached all day, especially with a toddler around.

If there is stuff going on for his age group, then I would totally do it. I started doing stuff with some Mom's groups on meetup.com in our area when DS1 was really little. It was nice to just get out and talk to other people sometimes.
  • I still haven't found/bought brewers yeast. I should just get some on amazon when I place my order today. I was going to start eating oatmeal regularly again, but I REALLY prefer it made with milk, and I'm sticking to no major dairy. DD is sleeping in the swing again. I'm SO glad we finally got that thing set up. Even if she only sleeps for an hour at a time in, it's an hour I don't have to hold/bounce/jiggle her. AND it's time I can focus on DS too.
The only place I found brewers yeast was at a vitamin store, like GNC.
I tired the "nutritional yeast" but it does NOT work the same. HAve you tried other kinds of milk? I put coconut milk in my oatmeal and it tastes delicious

If you just want nondairy, use another fat, like a vegetable oil or shortening - or even lard. The difference between oils is mostly flavor, but you can also get a bit of a different texture - like olive oil cake is heavy and moist, and shortening is often used in pie crust because it makes things light and crispy. Peanut oil is another that works flavor-wise with a lot of desserts. What's best depends on what you're making and your preferences, ie, do you like chewy or crispy cookies? What I do a lot is google a bunch of recipes and see what they all say, and then decide what to do. If you read a bunch of pie crust recipes, you pick up that lard or crisco will probably work better than oil, kwim? I wouldn't sub something that isn't a fat, like applesauce or bananas, unless you're trying to make it lowfat. It won't taste as delicious! :P
This. I do a lot of subbing to make things lower fat and it does not taste the same when baking, usually not even close. The flavor might be close (depending on what it is), but usually the texture is way off.
  • I haven't bought any of the "other" kinds of milk, mostly because I don't care that much, LOL! Good ideas though!
Do you have Trader Joes? That's where I usually find the cheapest milk alternatives (I like soy and almond). Definitely buy the boxed versions instead of the already refrigerated stuff - it's way cheaper.

Has anyone seen the "someone I love was murdered" bumper stickers? Are these a joke or for a tv show or something? Or political? Who buys a sticker like that?
Did some Googling and it looks like they are made by POMC (Parents of Murdered Children). It breaks my heart that there is even a need for such a group.
  • Thoughts and prayers please... Just found out my 18 year old sister is 10 weeks pregnant with her second baby. Her daughter is 15 months old right now, and let's just say she lives up to the stereotypical teen mom stigma. :(

I don't even want to pretend to be excited or happy for her. I don't know what to say. It's an all-around crappy situation. What would you do/think/say if you were me? :-<

  • @Vinny424‌ I'm glad your mom was willing and able to disprove the labels of being a teen mom, but I know my sister and I've seen the kind of mom she's been so far. She loves her daughter, but she's still very self-centered. She pawns her off on my mom a lot (who of course is happy to have her), but that's not the best environment either.

A few months ago I posted here about my mom, and a lot of ladies advised that I try to keep her at arms' length since I would soon have a baby to think about. I agreed that was the best thing to do, since as it was pointed out that I can't help someone who doesn't want help. How am I supposed to be a good influence on my sister, niece and future niece/nephew without exposing my daughter to her toxic lifestyle?

My MIL who is familiar with my sister and all of her drama thinks CPS should get involved, and as much as I hate to say it, I don't completely disagree with her.

I cry so much watching the sad kid dying episodes. Yesterday it was a pregnant lady dying. Oy Grey's you know how to tug at my heart!
Yep I watched yesterday too (I try to watch all 3 episodes every day). I stopped watching this show for years because I couldn't handle it. Oh well. I go back to work in 2 weeks so no more Grey's after that!

  • Having a shitty 24 hours. Food poisoning yesterday, Penny had her vaccinations this morning (we both cried). And just got mail from the gov telling me my maternity benefits were denied because I'm short 18 days of work :(

Not working over the summer and having holidays over Christmas screwed me. (Substitute teacher). I would have had enough hours if the time frame they based the assessment on didn't include summer break.

So my income of 1500-2000 a month is now nothing. Great.

Back from our shots as well. He may not be chunky (11.5 lbs) but he is tall (23.75in)! He jumped from 30-something last month to 70-something % now.

The worst was that he got an oral vaccine that can cause diarrhea so I can't kiss him for 24 hours! But he needs all the kisses! :((

P got the oral vaccine and I've been smooching him all day.. No one told me about the poops!!!!

This could be a very interesting gym session.. Squats may not be a good idea. #-o

  • When Aiden got his oral vaccine, they just said to be sure we washed our hands well after diaper changes - there was no mention of no kissing! Thankfully, DH and I managed to come through without any ill affects to our rear ends  ;)
