I sort of kinda tried to catch up, but I just can't. All I know is my pic of mason on the potty is far less controversial compared to all of this.
I'm not sure I want to try and catch up.
I kind of skipped over the most controversial stuff. But I made a fantastic dinner. Lol. My husband even said it was 10x better than his mom's version. I can die happy now. ;-)
Also, I'm taking a bump break. I'll be back in a couple of hours.
Hahah I clearly need to proof read. Bumping on my phone is harder than it looks!!
Lol, beast milk is the best, especially cat milk. Amirite?
Sorry guys, I missed you too much to stay gone!
I hate cat milk.

@northport6 - Leviticus is the Old Testament. Look at the Bible like this - the Old Testament is a history lesson of how things came to be but it isn't how we should live. A lot of bad things happened then. The New Testament tells us how we should live today. A lot of people take the teachings of the Bible out of context - most specifically the teachings of the Old Testament. I think that book scares a lot of people which is why when Bibles are often passed out for free, they only include the New Testament. :-)
Hello, my name is Jew. I have no New Testament. So. That.
Lol. Well, disregard. So do Jews believe in the second coming?
We believe the messiah (from the Hebrew moschiach) hasn't come the first time, but we're waiting.
I'm pretty sure my Jew baby who was born on Christmas is the messiah. :P
Omfgeeeee this thread was unbelievable. I even had to expand and read all of herc's posts.
First:
Second: Gypped (or, incorrectly, jipped) is actually an ethnic slur. Herc, please don't insult people based on their ethnicity.
Third: To homeschool, you need to know the difference between illicit and elicit. In other words, each of the homeschool advocates had grammatical, logical, or other faults that would make me cringe if I were in charge of ensuring you were qualified to teach. Luckily for you, I'm not. Unluckily for you, your faults may prevent your children from getting into college or even landing jobs post high school.
Fourth: I can't even with all the bigoted shit here. IT IS NOT TOLERANCE FOR PEOPLE TO ACCEPT THAT YOU HAVE A SHITTY OPINION THAT OPPRESSES OTHERS. TOLERANCE ESPOUSES FREEDOM FOR PEOPLE TO DO WHAT THEY WILL, NOT FREEDOM FOR BIGOTED FUCKS TO SHOW HATRED. In short, see Cliven Bundy and his less-than-enlightened views on slavery.
Fifth: Caitlin and Sasquatch, if you choose to subsume your existence, individuality, rights as a human, whatever, to give precedence to the possibility of a human, that's your right. I'm going to stay over here in the land of the reasonable where I am in control over my own body.
Sixth: I have had a lil drink. I'm so fucking mad that I had a life today.
Seventh: My uo is that I think Hillary should go by Madame President when she wins in 2016, not Mrs.
I wasn't going to respond to this but since the elicit, illicit comment was me I will say this. Please dont act like you've never misspelled something. I'm on mobile and my phone autocorrects everything. I know the difference but i misspelled elicit and my phone autocorrected it to illicit and honestly I didnt notice or I would have corrected it.
Thanks M&H, Heaven, and Cash! Going back to this, I realize I brought up a dead subject with my post's timing. LOL! Oh well!
Also...I have no tolerance for racists.
Andplusalso...well, there are too many feelings on these subjects right now that I'm stepping away. I just really don't like close-minded people. At all.
My UO is only an unpopular opinion for some of you because I'm sure the majority of you share this opinion. I'm glad my daughter will be competing with some of your homeschooled kids in the future. I know she'll be a more well rounded person both academically and socially by going to school. My husband and I will still be teaching her every single day whether we read books together, learn life lessons, or help with homework.
Thank goodness she doesn't have to rely on me to teach her calculus.
I really don't think anyone was being racist in this thread. Am I wrong? I honestly don't see it, but maybe I missed something.
Not sure if you were referring to my comment, but there were a couple of comments about race and segregation in the middle of all of this. I was just bouncing off of that.
OK, I'm home, DD is experiencing sleepytime in Pepperland, so let me begin to unpack your question, which is a large, complicated one. I'm by no means a scholar, but I'm a fairly active adherent, so hopefully I can give you a clearer picture.
To begin: the Pentateuch (which we generally just refer to as the Torah) is just the first five Deuteronomical books, Genesis through Deuteronomy. That's not our whole bible, but is what we work our way through during the year, from Rosh Hashanah to Rosh Hashanah. How all of that is addressed and the importance it's given is, more or less, the same importance it's given in Christianity: it's the foundation texts, the pivotal creation stories.
Like Christianity, Judaism has its share of strict literalists (namely, the Ultra Orthodox community), but also like Christianity, the beliefs run the spectrum. We have denominations the same as Christianity, notably Reconstructionist, Reform, Conservative, Orthodox and Ultra Orthodox, although there are other minor movements.
The other books in your 'Old Testament' (the Prophets and the Writings) make up the remainder of our bible, which is referred to as the Tanakh, but it's the same, word-for-word books.
So, where we split off is, obviously, the point in history when Jesus arrives.
Basically, Judaism leaves open-ended many of the things that Christians believe Jesus solved for them, namely, the world to come, and the afterlife. I'm glossing over a lot here and any other Jews on the board who want to chime in, feel free, but basically there's a lot we don't have answers for just yet. Therefore, we rely on several key rabbinical scholars throughout history to interpret the bible's wishes for how we should live our lives -- but at bar/bat mitzvah we are taught that it is every Jew's responsibility to read and interpret the words for ourselves.
The most important of the early rabbinical scholars is Maimonides. Maimonides wrote the Mishneh Torah, which codifies Jewish law based on the text of the bible and accepted interpretations from it -- these laws are collectively called Halakha. The closer to Orthodox one gets, the more stringently Halakha is observed, including Kosher dietary law, religious observance, etc. Judaism encourages open conversation more than most religions, and is socially much more liberal. We don't believe the soul enters the body until birth, for example, so do with that what you will. Divorce isn't the end of the world (hey, everybody makes mistakes). There is a basic underscoring of humanity making mistakes, life being fraught with obstacle after obstacle -- as my rabbi says, "Remember that Moses did everything G-d told him to and he still didn't make it into the Promised Land." -- but that good works on Earth, love for humanity and a belief in a higher order bring everlasting peace.
Related, and on my mind: Where Christians recognize 10 commandments, Jews technically have 613 commandments, many of which were invalidated by the destruction of the temple (OMG I am making my rabbi so proud right now, you guys) like animal sacrifices and such, but they're all gleaned from the Tanakh and they form the moral and ethical structure of how we are to live our lives. Many of them are hilariously specific.
I've often felt that because of the radically different tone of the New Testament, many Christians dismiss out of hand the value of the Old Testament -- I've heard many times that the OT G-d is the wrathful G-d whereas the NT G-d is the loving G-d -- but it does have the basic framework that your NT builds upon.
And, as with every important topic, our stance on Jesus can be best summed up in this scene from Futurama:
Fry: So you guys don't believe in Robot Jesus? Rab-bot: We believe he was built, and that he was a very well programmed robot, but he wasn't our messiah.
That was rambling and ridiculous and if you have questions, I'll do my best to answer them more succinctly.
I'm the one who tossed the word racist into the mix. Maybe what I should have posted to @Chillpr is "sometimes I wonder if you're racist." I just get that vibe from her sometimes.
I apologize @Chillpr and I apologize to the board for throwing the word around.
I still have yet to hear a valid reason given as to why gay people shouldn't be allowed to get married. I honestly believe that everyone deserves to have the same rights, and be able to express their love the same way.
And I don't believe for one second that the people saying "I don't vote on these issues" is telling the truth.
And this UO thread has really made me consider blocking at least one poster, because I just can't even with some of the shit that gets posted here.
And let's not forget you mocking people's minor errors on an Internet forum - stating it mirrors their level of intelligence.
That's completely relevant when they profess to be better equipped to teach every single subject under the sun (physics? chemistry?) than professional teachers.
Loolaide, with all due respect, as we're all doing our best to raise our kids as we see fit, I feel compelled to inform you that I don't know a single homeschooling parent who professes to be equipped to teach every subject under the sun. Luckily my hubby and I have degrees in vastly different subject matter, so we have a lot of material covered. Also, most of the folks I know will have their children take higher level math and science courses at the community college if it's something they are uncomfortable teaching.

I'm still on the fence if this was worth it. Basically it just reinforced my opinion of most of the posters here. Some are awesome, some are BSC, some I wish would leave and some are never allowed to take a break.
I do think some of the homeschooling comments on here went too far. I hope this thread, or at least that topic, dies soon.
It'll die down just in time for all those who are butthurt to take it over to FFFC. Just call me the amaaaazing Kreskin.
To be fair, homeschooling, when done well, can be great. The attitude towards it and towards public school teachers in this thread really seemed one sided though.
I think you meant to quote Cole, but consider your opinion duly noted by me. :-)
I'll apologize for what I said. I just feel like public schools get bashed by homeschoolers. There are some amazing teachers in the school system. Especially when I think of some friends/family that have done Teach for America.
There are few people that are equipped to home school but more power to them for doing it. I'm sure it's extremely challenging.

This is exactly why I read the UO. So I can see who said what crazy shit & see who love titted the response.
And in my defense, my original comment was made specifically because I'm sensitive about this and was trying not to be so dramatic so I chose to say that I felt that negative comments should not be made about our children instead of pointing out specific things. I only did so Bc I was asked to explain myself. I suppose I should have said "I think you're both getting out of hand." Lol
I think that sums up most of the arguments on here.
I don't think anyone expects perfect communication in an online forum where most people are using phones and a teeny tiny touchscreen and not instructing anyone... But even then, I could share tons of spelling and grammar errors from my daughter's teachers. One of my favorites was where her teacher misspelled excellence on a certificate of excellence. =D> That one stayed on the fridge the whole year!!
Actually, when people are saying they are better than teachers, I expect them to be. As should we all, unless we want to participate in the dumbing down of society.
But even teachers make mistakes - even in the classroom. And in this forum, nobody is instructing anyone else - nobody has a lesson plan in front of them... It is internet chit chat. So one error and someone isn't qualified to teach their child? We teach our children to read, write, walk, talk, go potty, count, say their ABC's, drive cars, so on and so forth... If someone is truly dedicated to the mission, there are many available lesson plans available to parents who want to put forth the effort. Hell, Loolaide, you'll not find a single soul in any profession who is perfect, and homeschooling parents don't wing this. They put a lot of time and effort into it. Of course mistakes will be made, but mistakes are made in schools, too, so that's hardly a reason to shun someone from the idea.
Except people are stating they'll homeschool because teachers aren't qualified to teach, specifically because they don't have m eds. So turnabout is fair play.
Also, @lorlor681 has the right of it. It's nbd, because my kids will be your kids' bosses.
Ok I get it, homeschooling is not your thing, & it's not mine either but I don't get the whole superiority complex you're having with saying your kids will therefore be higher up in society? I like you Loo, but dude, that comes across as really rude.
@Loolaide I like you. You may or may not like me but I like you. You know why? You remind me of Rachel Maddow. And I love Rachel Maddow.
That is such a fabulous compliment that you are officially off my post it.
Hahaha!! Thanks. but seriously though...I record and watch TRMS every single night. And your comments and just the way you word things reminds me of her.
@Loolaide, just read more of the back & forth between you & Cash, & I think I finally get what you meant, that you're ok with homeschooling if done right, but you didn't like how people who wanted to homeschool were simultaneously bashing the school system & saying they could do it better, am I right?
Anyway that makes much more sense to me but FTR what you said at first didn't sound like that at all. It sounded like you were saying all homeschooled kids will have lower jobs in society & that publicly taught kids will be their bosses. I'm sure you see why that would sound offensive. Oh & my feelings had nothing to do with Herc, but more about the fact that I was homeschooled (& am now quite successful, mind you ) & that you seemed to be implying (at least initially) that publicly taught kids are more successful, which is just silly.
@Loolaide, I did read your whole argument but honestly thought that you picking out their grammatical errors was a weak argument for making blanket statements like "their kids will have a hard time getting into colleges or finding jobs". Everyone makes mistakes, & it just felt like you were reaching & generalizing to try & make your argument. I DO understand your frustration with the "I can do it better" (than public schools) mindset though. If people want to homeschool OR have their kids attend Public school, fine, but I agree the bashing/hating was unnecessary.
