  • Shoes with characters on them?  Just no. That itself probably isn't really unpopular, but I'd rather pay three times as much and get plain shoes at Stride Rite.  That part might be.

Chevron patterns?  Kinda cute, but not the most amazing thing ever.

I always thought I agreed with this until my mom got my son a pair of "Cars", light up tennis shoes. They look like legit running shoes (minus the cartoon guys and lights). He's obsessed with them and looks so old with them on, which should make me hate them, but they're adorable!

So maybe one of my UOs is that I may be a cartoon shoe convert...

I totally agree, they look so tacky. However, I'm being a total hypocrite because right now DS is wearing red "Cars" shoes that my grandparents got him at Stride Rite. We've never even seen the damn movie...but when he picked it up at the store and started "driving" the shoe, apparently the deal was done.

I still think character shoes are stupid and tacky though.

  • @ibackbevo, I was going to write this as my UO today, but you said it all.
  • My UO is that I love winter.  I've lived in Minnesota my whole life, and look forward to colder temps and snow every year.  I don't mind shoveling/ using our snowblower and love that I get to accessorize with hats, mitten and scarfs every day.  The only thing i'm not a fan of is the wind that comes with it.

I'll add to this...flashing/blinky shoes and Heelez (sp?) make me crazy.  I refuse to buy them for my son.

Yeah character clothes (or clothes with any words on them) get donated immediately in our house. I made an exception for some Thomas pajamas because my son doesn't appear in public in those.

I hate when people make a huge deal about their own birthday over the age of like 22. I love birthday parties and celebrating birthdays, but the second someone pulls a "wahh it's my BIRTHDAY" I can't help but cringe. I'm lookin' at you Stassi!
I immediately thought of Stassi before I even got to the last sentence.  Yeah, your birthday is not a national holiday.  Your DH or SO should do something for you, but not the rest of the world.

@RachelCA29 - When I have looked at the sex offender registry before, it tells you what the crime is.  It has been long enough that I don't remember if it was state specific or not, but the one I looked at told you if their crime was something minor like urinating in public. I also thought you had to be an adult to be on there...i.e. a 15 year old would not be on the registry.  But, again, maybe that is state specific.  It also told you what age they were when they committed the crime and the age of the victim.  Therefore, if it was an 18 year old sleeping with a 16 year old and the dude is now 40, I can't fathom people would be picketing outside his house to try to get him to move out of the neighborhood.
I think they might be state and country specific. This was on my mind because there have been a few cases of teens get charged with child pornography offences for "sexting" each other, and in Canada that would land them on our sex offenders list (even though they are 16 or something). I think that it is just a travesty to ruin these kids lives with charges like that and ending up on the list.

I also know that the general public doesn't read the registry very closely and actually think logically about the information. They would rather just grab their pitchforks and torches in seems. I was just reading an article on Slate about a guy that had sex with his underage girlfriend when he was 18 (she was 16) and her parents flipped and charged him. He's now in his 30s with a wife and kids. He can't hold a job or move to a nice neighbourhood because someone will find his name on the registry and instead of thinking logically, they just get him fired and force his family to move. The article was heartbreaking (his kids get bullied at school because other parents tell their own children that kid's dad is a "pervert").

It's just stories like this that make it seem like the registries aren't protecting the general public the way it's meant to, and they are hurting people that are innocent/served their time appropriately.

    2) I think all people over 65 should be legally required to re-take their driving test. I've almost got into 3 wrecks in the last 24 hours because of old people not looking where they're going, or making up their own rules of the road. If they don't pass then their license is revoked. I understand many old people use their car to get around, but when people's safety is at risk, they shouldn't be on the road. My DH's gran has mounted the curb and knocked stuff over twice in the last couple of years. She's 84 and shouldn't be driving.
I think in Ontario people over 70 have to ... it doesn't help! When my grandma had to re-take her written test, she said she was so nervous her "vision went" on her, and she couldn't read the test properly. She still passed and still drives all the time.

I'm so glad I don't live/drive  in the same city as her!

Don't know if this will be "unpopular" or not, but here goes anyway.  Comparing "thin" shaming to "fat" shaming is not comparable.  In fact, I almost find it insulting to compare the two if you are talking about someone who is just on the low end of a normal bmi or "borderline" underweight who is supposedly being "thin" shamed.  Frankly, in general, our society promotes the "ideal" as being on the low end of normal.  If you open up any magazine, watch any run way show, open up a Victoria's Secrets catalogue, watch pretty much any award show the majority of people/stars/models are either underweight or, at least, borderline underweight.  It is not the same thing and it is not comparable.  There are not shows called the "biggest gainer."  A large portion of the ads on tv are not aimed at thin people.  And there certainly isn't a multi-billion dollar industry aimed at people trying to put on 5-10 pounds

At 5'8, I have been as thin as low as about 112-113 (as a teen) and about 120 as an adult.  I have been as heavy as 224 toward the end of my pree/bedrest pregnancy, but was still over 200 after birth.  I can tell you from personal experience that I was treated totally different on a regular basis when I was over 200 pounds than when I was normal or even slightly underweight.  I can't even fathom how someone who is morbidly obese is treated...so if you are some woman who is at 18 or 18.5 bmi, please stop and think about what a morbidly obese person goes through before you start saying weight shaming goes both ways.
Mostly I agree with you, just wanted to point out there is an industry for thin men who want to bulk up.  (Not sure how big it is, but it's definitely a real thing.)

I knew a guy in college who got drunk and peed in the bushes and got placed on the registry. Ridiculous. I mean, they teach you how to do that in the scouts. He peed in a bush at 2am; he didn't go pee in a kindergarten classroom.

In our state it tells you whether it's a misdemeanor or felony offense, but many people won't go read it even that closely. I agree that it dilutes the ability to identify who the real concerns are.

@Rocknroll64 -  I'm not saying that comments aren't made, but I don't think it is the same kind of pervasive shame that overweight people experience pretty much every day of their life.

At one point in my pregnancy with my DS, I measured 4-5 weeks behind on my fundal height...and my baby actually was measuring 5+ weeks behind due to iugr.  So I "get" measuring small in pregnancy. That (plus the pre-e) is when I was put on bedrest and a high calorie/high protein diet...one of the reasons I actually gained so much weight.  So, yeah, I know what it is like to be measuring behind. I have no doubt that people may make comments and they may even be hurtful comments.  I am sure thin people get comments, too.  When I was very thin, I can remember a few.  I can remember a few about how small my bump was when I was pregnant with DS, too.  Before I was dx with pre-e (which caused the IUGR) and all we knew about was my baby measuring small, an MFM told me I just needed to go to more all you can eat buffets and did make it seem like it was my fault.  However, I don't think it is at all the same kind of pervasive, cultural shame that obese people are put through...pregnant or not.  By way of just one example, I cannot tell you how many times on my VBAC board I have read of women being told they can't deliver vaginally and having their doctors try to push them into an automatic c-section because they are overweight or obese. First, it is absolute hogwash that you can't deliver vaginally because you are overweight.  Second, this isn't just a hurtful statement - these women are being bullied into major abdominal c-sections which in turn affects their recovery, bonding with their baby, breastfeeding, puts them at higher risk for many complications, etc.  And that is just one example...there are many more. This is what I mean when I say they aren't comparable.

I totally agree with you but I think the test needs to be more difficult.  My grandma is 90 and can barely walk and my entire family thinks she needs to quit driving.  She doesn't want to stop, and she keeps passing all the tests so there's nothing we can do.

  • @ibackbevo  I agree with you 100% when it comes to women who are not pregnant.  From my own experience over the course of my pregnancy though, I have to say that "thin shaming" is a real thing. As someone who has been measuring small I get a lot of "Are you sure your eating enough" and "you're not supposed to diet while pregnant."  And let me tell you, they are said in a very judgemental way, as if I'm starving my baby on purpose or something.  I think in general, people need to accept that everybody's bodies are different especially in pregnancy.  You basically have no control over what your body does.

I also agree there is a difference between "thin shaming" and "fat shaming" but during my pregnancy I have endured my share of very judge mental comments. My neurologist actually accused me of being anorexic at the beginning of my pregnancy. Her words were "you can go be anorexic or whatever after you have this baby, but right now you are killing your baby because you're starving it to death"
I agree with PP, your neurologist is an ass and that comment was uncalled for. Especially when they don't know the whole situation. I was diagnosed with an over active thyroid in my senior year of high school. I am 5'2", and at the time I weighed 85 pounds. I ate all the time and could not gain weight for the life of me until this was resolved. I was even accused of having an eating disorder by one of my teachers in front of other students. As soon as my thyroid was regulated I gained the appropriate amount weight for my body type. Now I can't keep it off!

I'm talking about when adults are talking to other adults and refer to themselves in that way.
    Yes!

To add on to this, my MIL refers to her husband as "Daddy" when talking to my husband and her other children. WTF lady! It creeps me the fuck out!
I agree 100%. My MIL actually sent me and SIL (who is due the end of March) a text addressing us as "Mommies" regarding her trip her to see her new grandbabies. I was legitimately skeeved out. It was so strange because she is a great MIL and I love her dearly. I'm going to chalk it up to grandbaby fever since she's going from 0 to 2 in less than 2 months time.

I was going to mention this as well. I cringe when I see Dora, Mickey Mouse, Hello Kitty etc outfits. The only thing I'm "ok" with is pjs. And that's only because I compromise.
