This is something that drives me crazy. A Christian who's mature in their faith should know that when Christ came, the old law was done away with and a new covenant was made through Him. Not saying the OT should be completely disregarded because there's a lot anyone can learn from history, but a new set of laws and commandments were put in place by Christ that are nothing like the OT laws.
Being a Christian is a huge part of my life, so of course following the Bible, striving to please God and attempting to be Christ-like is high priority for me. Most people know what the Bible says about homosexuality, so I'm in alignment with what it says. I wouldn't vote in favor of gay marriage, but I'm not a very political person to begin with. I'm not going to actively protest or vote against it. The way I see it, people are going to be gay whether or not they're married, so why would I try to stop that?
(I'm only quoting this because you said you're Christian. I wouldn't try to quote Scripture in a debate to a non-believer.) In Luke 10:25-28, Jesus tells an expert of the law that in order to inherit the kingdom of life, one must love God with all that he is in all aspects of life and to love his neighbor as himself. And in John 14:15, Jesus says if you love Him, keep His commands. So while I don't agree with homosexuality, harping on it isn't the way to go about influencing anyone. Jesus teaches love and peace, not judgment on condemnation.
I used to be a very active member of a church, so I know what you're talking about in the bolded above. However, just to play devil's advocate, how about for some New Testament examples:
Matthew 5:32 - But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
1 Corinthians 11:5 - But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved.
1 Corinthians 14:34-35 - Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.
There were just too many things the church teaches that I couldn't get on board with, so I couldn't in good conscience continue to go. I offer the above as small examples, as it's been probably a decade since I've frequented a church and this is all I can come up with at the moment. (PS - I know the Matthew example isn't the best, because some Christians really won't re-marry if they wind up getting a divorce. I think my other examples might be stronger.)
Did you ever try talking to anyone about those things that rubbed you the wrong way? I'm not gonna lie, there are still things I sometimes read and I'm like "whaaat??" It always helps me to get the back story or more information that the Bible doesn't always provide.
Matthew example: I agree with it. It's a hard thing to accept, but it just goes to show that God isn't kidding around when he says he hates divorce! Marriage is a serious commitment that a lot of people today take too lightly. This is a difficult subject for me because my mom cheated on my dad, and he never remarried but she's remarried three times now...
Corinthian example: I can't give you the full reasoning unfortunately, which makes me irritated at myself because I should be able to, but I learned that this was said because of cultural things that were happening in that region during that time that don't necessarily apply to today's modern culture. For example, this book of the Bible, this letter was written to the church in Corinth. If I'm not mistaken, this kind of thing wasn't written in any other recorded letter to any other church in the Bible, proving that this was apparently a specific issue within that church.
There's a lot of history behind the Bible that isn't included inside. But I guess searching for further info helps to make your faith stronger, so it's a good thing.

I think Obama is quickly steering our country down a dangerous path. I hope and pray voters wise up in 2016.
I just read through 17 pages of posts and couldn't stop thinking - does this chick know that he isn't/can't run again in 2016?
Of course I know that -- and thank God for it. I'm just hoping voters wise up a bit and choose a candidate who looks after the best interests of the country for a change.
And because I love HIMYM

I was addressing the bolded as well, lots of churches don't teach anti-gay marriage or "pro life" messages. Progressive churches are out there and they don't worry about reading the Bible literally or infallibly.
I have considered joined a Unitarian Universalist congregation. So far as I'm aware that's the only church near me that would be aligned at all with my views. My understanding is that UU is more about growth, the search for truth, openmindedness, justice, equality, etc., than it is about any particular religion. That's right up my alley. I'm not sure why I'm still hesitant to give it a try.

I appreciate that you are willing to search for further info rather than just take things at face value. I think that's a skill that's lacking nowadays.
Again, devil's advocate (because these are the sort of questions I asked myself before deciding to stop going to church): if that example can be disregarded because it doesn't apply to modern culture, why can't that be said about many, many, other things? Certainly just about everything that was happening culturally back when the Bible was written was much different than things are now.
PS - Hey look, we're disagreeing without getting all cray-cray! Is this still the A14 board I'm on, or am I lost?
I finally waded through the rest of this mess, and whoa. Anyone who says we don't deserve our reputation as the CrazyCakes board is in denial. I'm totally not offended by the other boards coming over; if you put on a shit-show, people will come.
Anyway, where did I leave off from my love its from earlier? Oh yes. Raganschlappi, just...if you're not going to defend your stance, then accept the fact that you pretty much have no credibility.
Greywolf or whatever your name is. You're gross. So very gross. I wouldn't bother returning; your name is on pretty much everyone's shit list, and there won't be any coming back from it.
As for my UO, it's lame, but my life is boring, so there you have it. I don't like most gifs. Some are funny, and if well placed, can be hilarious, but most are just annoying. That's not a slam to you O13 ladies (I think y'all are the gif bombers?), I'm just not a gif-er.

See, I think my not voting to allow gay marriage you are judging and condemning.
Think really hard about everything you know and believe about Jesus, do you honestly think if he were here today he would be against gay marriage? I don't. But I'm also one of those Christians that doesn't interpret the new testament as being anti-homosexual.
Loving my neighbor as myself would mean I afford them the same rights I have.
I don't see how a lack of voting could be interpreted as judging and condemning.
I think Jesus would be as He was in the days he walked the earth. You hardly ever read about Jesus teaching about what you shouldn't do or how you shouldn't be, but about what you should do or how you should be.
And I'm sorry, but how do you not interpret the NT as being anti-homosexual? There are several verses that talk about it...

I'm a UU, but I can understand your hesitation. (I go in and out of phases when I want/need regular church-going in my life, and those when going to church is the last thing I'm interested in.)
All UU churches are by definition "open and affirming," but different churches can have different styles. Some are more more granola-crunchy New Agey; others are more "Christian" in feel (i.e. they'll talk about Jesus, though usually in the context of him being a spiritual leader, rather than the Son of God). But all will abide by the basic idea that everyone should be supported in their spiritual journey, whatever that journey may look like.

Thank you, and I agree.
And hmmm.. That's a good question. I guess it's a matter of studying and trying to figure out through context and research which things were applicable to a specific church, and which things were written to Christians and readers for all of time.
Haha yes!! I have zero desire to get myself all worked up and stressed out over an internet argument. It's not good for me or the baby.

This is the thread that never ends and I have an appointment so I need to just post this before I have to go:
@greywolf18 (Wolf? The nerve!), what you said is bad, and it makes me think that you are a bad person, and you should feel badly about yourself. Preferably alone in a corner someplace where you can reflect on why what you said was BAD.
The rest of you, well, some of you seem all right and some of you do not, but don't worry because the troublesome ones tend to weed themselves out over time. Those who don't, you'll enjoy mocking. Oh, and PS? Let's see any of you judge-y types complain about that good parking spot if you develop SPD that makes you feel like someone hit you in the crotch/hips with a sledgehammer repeatedly. You'll look perfectly normal otherwise, so if this does happen to you, I hope some three minutes pregnant chick gives you a look of disdain. If it happens, please PM me so I can laugh.
amen on that parking space shit. wait til your feet feel like every bone in them is broken and bruised, your knees give out, and your lower back is screaming. I can't attest to the pain in the giney, but you better pray you can't either.
Pretty sure I was the person that started that, and I did have bad SPD with my second child and a toddler under 2 so if you're referring to me then I'm not changing my opinion. My opinion started with not using those parking spots when you're 8 weeks pregnant. I did say I felt guilty when I used it at 38 weeks even with SPD but I never once shamed other women in situations similar.
Yes, and I think he would want us to love all and treat them as we'd want to be treated.
There are several verses that seem to mention homosexual acts. The thing is, in context, culture, the time, etc; non consensual sexual acts between older men in authority and boys was accepted. Paul condemned that. They had no word or understanding for homosexual. There is much discussion about the original Greek and what it meant. What it doesn't mean is consensual sexual acts between a same sex couple.
Okay... I guess we're all entitled to our opinions.
I agree!
Those things were accepted?? Where did you learn about that? I've never heard about that. In Leviticus it doesn't use the term "homosexual," but it talks about men being with other men in a sexual way. Maybe this is a more accurate way of phrasing.
Side note: I didn't realize before I posted that this is something that happens every Thursday. lol I probably won't be participating in future discussions like these! I just came here to chat with other soon-to-be mommies about how our pregnancies are going.

A little late to this, but it took forever to vet through 18 mother flucking pages. Nov13 here.
After all that, not a single person caught the two posters who said they were annoyed by obese people on flights. Gonna tell my BIL to walk to SC from CA next time he wants to come home. Wouldn't want to annoy any passengers.
July13 here. This thread got me through nearly 4 feedings...and that I thank you for. The headache I got from all this crazy...that I hate you for JK I love a good crazy thread.
Holy hell! I can't believe I wasted the last hour of my life reading this.
I'm so glad July '13 isn't the crazy board anymore, but honestly, I don't think we had anyone to compare the greywolf.
Chicky, you need to find another site. TB doesn't forget and what you said was absolutely awful, especially considering you say you've had a loss. Fuck off and don't come back.
What is really crappy is that she hasn't been the first poster to make insensitive/crappy comments about miscarriages....there has been a lot of hating on the PgAL ladies and ladies that were apart of the board and experienced loss this time around.
