I won't ever own a gun because I couldn't live with the guilt of killing someone no matter what they did/were going to do. I do have pepper spray and can absolutely put up a good fight though.
I hate it when people bring babies on red-eye flights. I think it's totally selfish when there are other options available. Do they not realize that everybody intends to sleep on this flight and that your child may intend to scream the whole time? Not to mention that sometimes I have to go straight to work once I land.
I don't agree with the death penalty, and it's confusing to me that the Republican platform is pro-death penalty as well as pro-life. I would have a heart attack if I were ever jury selected for a death penalty case.

Just playing devils advocate here because the same thing can be said for the democratic party which quite a few of them tend to be pro-choice but anti-death penalty.

It is my opinion that everyone should be required to clean public toilets for a week, just so they realize how much it sucks to clean up after messy people. I also think they should be required to work behind a counter so they know how much it sucks to serve asshats, customer service people are not your punching bags people.

@fireflygirl112 The only way I can go visit my parents in America, and return, is by red-eye flight. There are no other options. I'll happily be selfish to take LO to meet its extended family. Sorry.

I lean way more to the democratic side on most issues and am both pro-choice and agree with the death penalty. I'm an all around moderate I guess.
Most Americans are moderate with leanings one way or the other. I tried not to generalize the entire democratic party in my statement partially because of this ya know?

Mayo is nasty. Mustard is also nasty. Ketchup and BBQ sauce are fine. Ranch dressing is divine.
My UO? I don't mind paying taxes. I would prefer that the money was managed better, but I like living in a country with good roads, a strong military, free education, etc. Plus everyone else's tax money pays my salary. And Americans pay WAY less tax than most other countries.
I don't think you should be able to buy cigarettes with an EBT card.
I would add to this saying they should not be able to buy anything unhealthy, soda and things.
I know a lot of people feel this way. While I think good intentions are behind this I think that over steps a boundary. Every one should have a right to choose the food they want to eat.
Cigarettes are not a necessity. I know one could argue that pop isn't either. I guess my UO stems from working in a grocery store and a particular mom coming in with her 4 kids and buying them 1 food item (a frozen pizza) and herself 2 packs of cigarette...EVERY DAY! I feel like 1 pizza isn't enough for 4 kids and that maybe if she didn't get the cigarettes the kids could have gotten more food.

You know that's the only way to travel sometimes? Often w/ international flights they're red eyes, should I not take my kids? Or, should I pay hundreds more for a different time?
Maybe my UO is the reverse, there are no rules for who can go on what flights. It's pretty self-absorbed to think only people that won't annoy you should go on your flight.
Here, here! I have one airline to choose from most of the year. One flight a day to go stateside. I plan on going, so, I highly recommend avoiding airlines that only offer red eyes. I wouldn't want to offend you Firefly. Not to mention, I find 6 and 7 year old kids far more troubling on those flights than babies, but, its just part of traveling. So, I accept it.
Whoa. I had no idea this was possible either. Apparently it's the cash benefits that aren't restricted (food assistance is regulated). I'm sure it differs by state also.
Edit: autocorrect fail
I think an EBT card is usually pretty regulated except in some stores, especially smaller mom and pop stores. At least in our state.

I don't want my tax dollars going to companies who tend to pay their workers crap, keeping some of these people on ebt cards. I also don't want my tax dollars going to health care for something that could have been avoided.
I would like to point out that I lived a minimum wage job for 5 years and I managed to eat healthy without the aid of ebt.
Edit, I should add that I didn't have kids though. So my situation was a bit easier than those who do.

I would love my tax dollars (when I paid in America) to go to preventative medicine for everyone. Healthy food classes, exercise benefits, imagine!! (Btw, I pay 33% income tax and sales tax is 25% where I live. I never feel sorry for Americans complaining about a tax increase. I also think tax free shopping days in America are kinda cute.)
Mayo is disgusting. Mustard is the nectar of the gods. Ketchup only goes on French fries and chicken tenders.
I'm pro-choice and anti-death penalty, although my DP opinion has nothing to do with morality. It costs the state hundreds of thousands more dollars to filter death row inmates through the justice system because of all the available appeals. I'd rather lock rapists and murderers away for life w/o possibility of parole. I think rotting in jail for 60 yrs would be worse than death anyway.
My OU: I think people who are vehemently opposed to same sex marriage are straight up bigots, plain and simple. I'm not saying you have to understand homosexuality or that you must allow same sex unions in your church. But denying another human the same marriage benefits you are entitled to just because their sexual orientation is different than yours? I've yet to hear one decent argument that doesn't actually translate into "I just really don't like gay people."

Please tell me how you lived on minimum wage. Even for a single person, I can't imagine how it worked unless you were subsidized in some way. I'm honestly curious.
It was hard, I was making 8 an hour, for the first year I lived with my parents. So I had housing paid for, but then I moved out and got an apartment while I was in school. There are ways to save on food if you really look, like there is a food truck that would come around selling the produce that a local grocery store was going to toss. They would sell bags of tomatoes for 2$ and a bag of apples for 1$. Pasta is cheap, I canned food so I could have fruits and veggies to eat.
My rent was harder as I was pulling in 240-320 a week and my rent was about 500 a month (I lived in NH at this time). Eventually in my 3rd year I moved in with roommates just because it was difficult.

I kind of hate the judgement on food stamps, welfare, public assistance, etc. Often the examples cited are one extreme and have no baring on the rest of those receiving help. I'm not saying the system is perfect.
I agree. I grew up "poor." Now I am upper middle class and pay heavily for it in taxes. But whenever I want to complain, I don't because the reason I was able to go to a good public high school and then to a 4 year college was because of those tax breaks my family had and the public assistance we got. It stinks that some people take advantage and misuse our system, but not all do.
With that said though, I complain about our social welfare system - being that my family (not immediate) abuses it all the time, in my face!

So maybe we can help improve healthy eating and healthy lifestyles to people in general. I agree that poor eating habits can lead to illnesses and diseases that could potentially be avoided which then lead to other diseases, etc. but I'm not about to attack people on EBT for eating those foods if I occasionally grab a bag of skittles at the checkout lane myself. I think if you're going with the argument of "but I pay for your healthcare and it's your own fault" then you need to expand your healthy-food-only target at every citizen in this country, not just the poor ones. Because, in a way, aren't your tax dollars paying for everyone's healthcare? Even rich people with diabetes, coronary artery disease, etc. are racking up healthcare costs. Not because you're paying for their visits, but they're increasing the demand for healthcare supplies, etc.
ETA: strokes are one of the leading causes of disability in this country (maybe the leading cause, I'm not sure) and in most cases it's completely avoidable. It's costly for all of us and I've seen plenty of rich people stroke out too.

We DEFINITELY need to improve healthy eating habits, as well as increase access to economical fresh and healthy foods to lower socioeconomic communities. The fact of the matter is healthy foods (fresh produce and meat) are expensive. Someone with an EBT card gets way more bang for their buck buying simple starches and processed junk. And many very impoverished Americans don't even have access to large grocery stores that offer fresh fruits and veggies -- they're making do at convenience stores and bodegas.
There's a lot of things that are royally fucked up about nutrition and hunger in America.
Food for thought. A loaf of bread, jar of PB, bag of chips and package of cookies can make lunch for a family for a week 6 apples not so much. My UO I think people who judge others on the way they spend their food stamps are out of touch with reality.

I would like to say in not judging low income people, I judge the companies who refuse to pay their workers a livable wage claiming that it would require them to fire more people. How about you don't give your ceos massive bonuses?

I don't like melons. This includes watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew and anything that tastes like any of these things. I can't eat fruit cups or fruit salads that contain melons because it makes everything taste like melon. I stare longingly at the the apples and grapes that might make up the mix and know that they'll just taste all wrong.
I dislike the "my best friends on this board are". I already feel like I'm in high school with my hormones.
I like mayo and I was on/off welfare from 17 to 20. I definitely smoked but no kids at that time. It helped me grow up and get on my feet. But I think people should consider welfare a temporary solution. Not long term.
I live in Canada so the death penalty isn't something I think about too often but I think if someone touched my child inappropriately I'd like to offer up my own form of penalty and it wouldn't be pretty.

Totally agree with you! Sadly, the extreme examples are often visible and bring negative attention that makes people angry, while the majority receiving assistance "follow the guidelines/rules." I'm all for helping people, there will always be someone who takes advantage of the system but it is in no way the norm!
There are people who abuse the system and people who do not no matter what system is in place. I know people who've used the system to pull themselves out of poverty and some who just use it. FWIW I still think for every one person who uses it to help themselves out of that situation even if there were two abusing it, it is still worth keeping it in place.
