  • I won't ever own a gun because I couldn't live with the guilt of killing someone no matter what they did/were going to do. I do have pepper spray and can absolutely put up a good fight though.
  • I hate it when people bring babies on red-eye flights. I think it's totally selfish when there are other options available. Do they not realize that everybody intends to sleep on this flight and that your child may intend to scream the whole time? Not to mention that sometimes I have to go straight to work once I land.

I don't agree with the death penalty, and it's confusing to me that the Republican platform is pro-death penalty as well as pro-life. I would have a heart attack if I were ever jury selected for a death penalty case.

Just playing devils advocate here because the same thing can be said for the democratic party which quite a few of them tend to be pro-choice but anti-death penalty.

Disclaimer, I am a raging liberal as my dad puts it.
    Edit additional
I lean way more to the democratic side on most issues and am both pro-choice and agree with the death penalty. I'm an all around moderate I guess.

Most Americans are moderate with leanings one way or the other. I tried not to generalize the entire democratic party in my statement partially because of this ya know?

    Mustard is also nasty.

I LOVE mustard. I mix it with my tuna since I hate mayo. As a toddler, I would drink it straight from the bottle.

I had no idea that was possible.

Whoa. I had no idea this was possible either. Apparently it's the cash benefits that aren't restricted (food assistance is regulated). I'm sure it differs by state also.

    Edit: autocorrect fail

I think an EBT card is usually pretty regulated except in some stores, especially smaller mom and pop stores. At least in our state.

I would add to this saying they should not be able to buy anything unhealthy, soda and things.
So the poors can't have junk food?
I don't want my tax dollars going to companies who tend to pay their workers crap, keeping some of these people on ebt cards. I also don't want my tax dollars going to health care for something that could have been avoided.

I would like to point out that I lived a minimum wage job for 5 years and I managed to eat healthy without the aid of ebt.

Edit, I should add that I didn't have kids though. So my situation was a bit easier than those who do.

Only if you can pull the cash assistance out at the time of purchase, which means they would still have to buy a food item.

Not sure if it can be done at an ATM.

Please tell me how you lived on minimum wage. Even for a single person, I can't imagine how it worked unless you were subsidized in some way. I'm honestly curious.

It was hard, I was making 8 an hour, for the first year I lived with my parents. So I had housing paid for, but then I moved out and got an apartment while I was in school. There are ways to save on food if you really look, like there is a food truck that would come around selling the produce that a local grocery store was going to toss. They would sell bags of tomatoes for 2$ and a bag of apples for 1$. Pasta is cheap, I canned food so I could have fruits and veggies to eat.

My rent was harder as I was pulling in 240-320 a week and my rent was about 500 a month (I lived in NH at this time). Eventually in my 3rd year I moved in with roommates just because it was difficult.

Minimum wage can vary from state to state, can't it?  I'm guessing that's how it could work.

  •  My OU: I think people who are vehemently opposed to same sex marriage are straight up bigots, plain and simple. I'm not saying you have to understand homosexuality or that you must allow same sex unions in your church. But denying another human the same marriage benefits you are entitled to just because their sexual orientation is different than yours? I've yet to hear one decent argument that doesn't actually translate into "I just really don't like gay people."

Exactly. Plus you know, lots of Christians and churches are completely pro gay marriage. Says the poster w/ 2 gay pastors.
    Agreed.

So maybe we can help improve healthy eating and healthy lifestyles to people in general. I agree that poor eating habits can lead to illnesses and diseases that could potentially be avoided which then lead to other diseases, etc. but I'm not about to attack people on EBT for eating those foods if I occasionally grab a bag of skittles at the checkout lane myself. I think if you're going with the argument of "but I pay for your healthcare and it's your own fault" then you need to expand your healthy-food-only target at every citizen in this country, not just the poor ones. Because, in a way, aren't your tax dollars paying for everyone's healthcare? Even rich people with diabetes, coronary artery disease, etc. are racking up healthcare costs. Not because you're paying for their visits, but they're increasing the demand for healthcare supplies, etc.

ETA: strokes are one of the leading causes of disability in this country (maybe the leading cause, I'm not sure) and in most cases it's completely avoidable. It's costly for all of us and I've seen plenty of rich people stroke out too.

  • I kind of hate the judgement on food stamps, welfare, public assistance, etc. Often the examples cited are one extreme and have no baring on the rest of those receiving help. I'm not saying the system is perfect.

I hope you didn't take my UO the wrong way. I think gov't assistance is a wonderful thing. I know families who are on it. My family was when I was younger.

It's just sad to see it being abused, especially with kids involved.
