My UO is that I don't think pregnant women need to be catered to just because they're pregnant. I think it's absurd to think your husband will do everything for you or that you park in the expectant mothers spot at a store if you're 8 weeks. (clearly this doesn't include women with restrictions or on bed rest, I'm talking healthy, uncomplicated pregnancy)
I once saw a nun emerge from her car in said spot. That's right, a nun.
I kind of hate the judgement on food stamps, welfare, public assistance, etc. Often the examples cited are one extreme and have no baring on the rest of those receiving help. I'm not saying the system is perfect.
Totally agree with you! Sadly, the extreme examples are often visible and bring negative attention that makes people angry, while the majority receiving assistance "follow the guidelines/rules." I'm all for helping people, there will always be someone who takes advantage of the system but it is in no way the norm!
There are people who abuse the system and people who do not no matter what system is in place. I know people who've used the system to pull themselves out of poverty and some who just use it. FWIW I still think for every one person who uses it to help themselves out of that situation even if there were two abusing it, it is still worth keeping it in place.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding your comment, but where in my statement does it say that I don't support assistance? (I'm not calling it welfare because that term has such negative connotations.) I'm all for helping people who need it. I know my parents needed it when they went through a difficult time and both of them lost their jobs. Of course there are some that may take advantage of the system, but that is most definitely not the norm.
Let me go back and read that because I thought I was agreeing with you. @lia619
I was saying that I know there are people who abuse the system but I do not care, that even if there are more people abusing it than using it for its intended purpose I would rather have it in place.

I parked in it one time when I was 8 1/2 months pregnant with DD and toting a 20 month old cranky DS. I had some serious SPD and had a very difficult time walking at that point (I couldn't even put my own underwear on. I literally had to put them on the floor, step into the holes, and let DH pull them up for me). I still felt guilty.
Mayo is disgusting. Mustard is the nectar of the gods. Ketchup only goes on French fries and chicken tenders.
I'm pro-choice and anti-death penalty, although my DP opinion has nothing to do with morality. It costs the state hundreds of thousands more dollars to filter death row inmates through the justice system because of all the available appeals. I'd rather lock rapists and murderers away for life w/o possibility of parole. I think rotting in jail for 60 yrs would be worse than death anyway.
My OU: I think people who are vehemently opposed to same sex marriage are straight up bigots, plain and simple. I'm not saying you have to understand homosexuality or that you must allow same sex unions in your church. But denying another human the same marriage benefits you are entitled to just because their sexual orientation is different than yours? I've yet to hear one decent argument that doesn't actually translate into "I just really don't like gay people."
Yes! All of it. Especially the gay rights- huge activist in that department.

I realize it wasn't at the same time. My point was just that while it's amazing that you were able to make it work, it's usually not possible. Hence the need for living wage not minimum wage.
I was also trying to be clear about how much you made b/c first you said minimum wage for 5 years then you said $8. Not that $8/hour is a lot of money!
Lol I see. Did you know that, and I'm not sure the date but I think it's today, fast food workers are scheduling a walk out demanding a rise in minimum wage? I just heard it on npr and found it funny that we happened to be discussing it.

We had a massive protest take place in the building I work in. They painted parking spots for handicap OR women. Not expectant mothers, just the sign for woman. Now its handicap and a picture of a baby stroller. Still weird. There are no steps, no ramps even to get in. Its not closer than other spots, just slightly bigger, which makes sense for handicap. I would be super pissed if I were handicap and all the spots were taken up because someone had a stroller? I don't plan on ever using those spots.
I judge people that spend tons of money on make up. I know sometimes you need the "good" stuff because its better on your skin and I admit, I used to be that person but now that we are down to one income, I've realized that some of the drug store make up is the exact.same.thing.
Not to mention, Elf make up at Target is actually pretty decent and most of their stuff costs $1. I guess since I'm a bit more frugal nowadays, I just can't justify spending $100 on 3 things of make up that you're just going to wipe off later.
I would also like to know where people who say healthy is cheaper than not healthy shop. I spend $60 a week on produce alone. That would easily buy a lot of cheap ground meat product, hamburger helper, Mac and cheese, and romen.

It's true, you're just paying for a lable if you're going for the really expensive stuff at Macy's or whatever.

I hate it when people bring babies on red-eye flights. I think it's totally selfish when there are other options available. Do they not realize that everybody intends to sleep on this flight and that your child may intend to scream the whole time? Not to mention that sometimes I have to go straight to work once I land.
What if that is the cheapest option? What if the parents thought the baby would also be sleeping?...not like a parent plans on their kid to be screaming...
Brought to you by a mom who flies red eyes with the DD
I would also like to know where people who say healthy is cheaper than not healthy shop. I spend $60 a week on produce alone. That would easily buy a lot of cheap ground meat product, hamburger helper, Mac and cheese, and romen.
$60 a week would feed us for a week, if not longer. I used to be a "healthy eater" but I quickly had to give that up once we went down to one income. Eating healthy is expensive.
I think America has a horrible mental health system in place. We criminalize people with mental health problems and sweep them under the rug. I think the gun control argument is stupid and the argument should actually be about early diagnosis and treatment for mental health issues!
Back to the plane thing, I don't think people should be allowed to recline their chairs. Why are the seats even made to do that? I would much rather have a crying baby seated next to me than a jerkface with his head practically in my lap and crushing my legs!
Also I hate mayo and think sour cream is gross too.

You know that's the only way to travel sometimes? Often w/ international flights they're red eyes, should I not take my kids? Or, should I pay hundreds more for a different time?
Maybe my UO is the reverse, there are no rules for who can go on what flights. It's pretty self-absorbed to think only people that won't annoy you should go on your flight.
Here, here! I have one airline to choose from most of the year. One flight a day to go stateside. I plan on going, so, I highly recommend avoiding airlines that only offer red eyes. I wouldn't want to offend you Firefly. Not to mention, I find 6 and 7 year old kids far more troubling on those flights than babies, but, its just part of traveling. So, I accept it.

DH and I manage on 70$ a week but I also still make a lot of my own food, it gets harder to find the time once the semester starts and I'm in school while working so then we tend to eat a little worse.

@fireflygirl112 if it suddenly doesn't bother you then, then why does it bother you any other time? How do you know for a fact other flights were available for said parents with annoying baby when they booked? Doesn't add up even with the 'duh' in front of it.

Agreed but I think it should be a mix of both.
Just an example of a mental heath issue a family member is a social worker who used to work with families as a court appointed kind of life coach. Anyway one of her clients friends had a woman come up to my family member and ask for help because her 8 year old son was saying when he grew up he wanted to kill as many women as he could before he was caught by the police. She couldn't afford to take him to see a councilor.
It was brought it up to my family members superiors but they couldn't do anything because he "hadn't done anything yet." It wasn't until he started cutting off the tails of cats that anyone from the state did anything.

@Firefly112 well, luckily, I'm guessing I'll never have to annoy you on the red-eye flights I take with my child. So, that's one positive. Might I suggest ear plugs or noise canceling head phones?

Screaming kids on flights only bother me if their parent(s) are being assholes (didn't come prepared to entertain them, letting older kids who know better act like brats, etc).
I'm way more bothered by the obese guy taking up half my seat or the hungover college student who reeks of vodka and BO than by babies who are having a rough go of flying.
I once saw parents dose their toddler with benadryl before a 45 minute, daytime, flight because they didn't want it to make any noise. The parents, on the other hand, sat behind me and wouldn't stop whining about the fact that no drinks were served because of turbulence.
I kind of hate the judgement on food stamps, welfare, public assistance, etc. Often the examples cited are one extreme and have no baring on the rest of those receiving help. I'm not saying the system is perfect.
I hope you didn't take my UO the wrong way. I think gov't assistance is a wonderful thing. I know families who are on it. My family was when I was younger.
It's just sad to see it being abused, especially with kids involved.
I don't usually weigh in on this stuff, but this one hits home. The amount of abuse of the system that I see by the families that are enrolled in the school that I work at is astounding. It shocks me every time I go into a meeting about a child and have to insist that there isn't a diagnosable disability. We have parents that actually want something, ANYTHING, to be diagnosed for their child for an increase in either assistance or SSI. It happens more every year. (Maybe a connection between this and an over-diagnosis of ADHD from a previous thread?)
I am all for helping anyone who truly needs it. Unfortunately, I see abusive situations more often than true need in my personal experience.
If I had to choose between a red eye and an afternoon flight, even if money weren't an option, I would choose the red eye because my kid would most likely sleep during the later one. There's no chance in hell they're sleeping in the afternoon so it seems less selfish that I would choose the later flight in thinking that would be the better option for all parties involved.
I don't like mayo - barf! I don't mind babies on planes at anytime or day - babies exist, no way of avoiding them. but, do we really need to continue to attack @fireflygirl12? She's allowed to have an opinion. I do mind people taking advantage of welfare - when they are completely capable of getting a job, bc its tax payers money, and I live in Atlanta and see it everyday. I don't like expensive makeup either. I do mind gay marriage - it's how I was raised, i dont need to explain why and being called a Bigot bc of my beliefs is a little extreme.
But, my major UO is WHY OH WHY do we need to start more political debates??? It's gets us nowhere.
Que the attacks.. (For my beliefs, for my opinions..)

A study was done (I don't know it to cite the source, sorry) that basically said our country isn't capable of providing fresh produce to the entire population. When a bottle of soda is cheaper than a bottle of water, it's hard to get pissed off at those who are struggling and try and stretch their $$. We have to change our entire attitude towards food if we're ever going to make changes.
Have you ever seen food inc? I think it was food inc anyway but it is a documentary that discusses the food system in America and how fucked up it is. Again I'm not pissed at the low income workers I'm pissed at the corporations that are helping to keep the system this way.
