Re: UO Thursday

  • My opinion this fine Thursday... I kinda enjoyed the craziness yesterday. Our board has been so slow since our LOs were born that it was a wee bit refreshing.

  • Well I definitley won't be able to top that!

I think it's silly to spend hundreds of dollars on a stroller. It seems pretentious and I can't imagine it's all that better than a resonably priced stroller. Who needs all the bells and whistles anyways?

I "invested" in a stroller, and I have to say that for me, it was totally worth the money. I know others who went for the Graco travel system, and have now purchased Snap N Gos and umbrella strollers, etc. because their original stroller was too bulky and hard to push/heavy. My Uppababy is versatile and light, and is a very "sturdy buggy" as my father likes to call it.

I don't think it's necessary to buy an expensive stroller, but I don't think it's pretentious. In fact, most people just assume mine is a Snap N Go (since I have my Graco car seat attached to it) which is fine with me.

I mostly agree.  I think for people like me, it's pretty dumb to spend a bunch of money on a stroller.  I'm a working mom so the only need for a stroller is on a weekend.  And once the kid starts walking that's really what they want to do so unless an outing is longer than an hour or 2, the stroller isn't even needed.  So for something that gets used occasionally for less than 3 years dropping a bunch of money is kind of silly.  Now, if I were a SAHM and using the stroller daily, I could see justifying some of the comfort features and bells and whistles.

Disagree! (Maybe this will be a fun Thursday after all!)

I think everything is appropriate in moderation. All the babies will learn to crawl and walk on their own time schedule. I think the concern is that some (lazy) parents will leave their babies in the walkers all through their waking hours and the babies will never learn how to support themselves. DD has a walker at my house and another at my mom's, and it's another fun activity for her. Yes, if she did it all day she would have no incentive to build her upper body strength and balance, but she gets plenty of floor time and other activities, so I'm not worried. I'd rather her be in the walker than hanging out in a swing, to be honest.

  • My UO is related to last week's UO Working Mom vs. SAHM debate:

The "SAHM Rock!", "Working Moms Rock!" bump badges really irritate me.  I have no problem with someone identifying as a SAHM or a working mom, but to add the "rocks!" at the end just implies that the other one doesn't.

The other badges seem so straight forward:  "EBF", "c-section mama", "I went natural!".... nothing to imply better than the alternative.

Why not a badge that says "All Moms Rock! (regardless of employment status) "

I was wondering that too... I do put my DD in a Jumparoo (she's never in for more than ten minutes at a time.) but I don't know how I'd cook dinner, get bottles ready for DC, clean house, fold laundry, etc without those types of distractions to keep her busy.

  • Yess!!! I was hoping I'd get a good, strong disagree on this topic! You didn't let me down!

I agree with you 100%.... Moderation is key..... However, I still will not be purchasing one for Lilly. (and she does NOT sit in a swing............... )

I was actually surprised by how strongly her pediatrician felt about walkers. He said that besides the fact that they can be potentially dangerous, they prevent baby from developing the necessary muscles needing for crawling and walking as well as keeps them from learning to balance... After he mentioned this, i remembered my nephew who used a walker (pretty much all the time) and did not start crawling until he was almost 11 months old and didn't walk until he was about a year and a month old...

I'm not judging anyone who uses a walker.  I'm just saying that I prefer to let Lilly play on the floor, roll around, play with her toys and work on crawling.  We usually hold her hands and let her walk around the house several times a day too, so she's not just constantly sitting.

  • I don't understand the fuss over 50 Shades of Grey. Some of my friends have been reading it and they act like E.L. James invented erotic literature. Gahh! I tried reading it, and it is So. Bad. Not even so-bad-it's-good, not guilty-pleasure bad, just plain ol' freaking BAD. Bad writing, dumb characters, cheesyass sex scenes. And my friends thought I stopped reading it because I was being a prude. Noooo. I think it's cool that more people are reading erotica now, but why did it have to be THIS book (series of books, rather) that brought erotica into the mainstream?

  • Here's one:

I think that if you have a 40-hour/week job and you can get your work done in less time than that, then goofing off at work/reading the news/bumping/FBing is totally justified ...as long as you are willing to put in some extra time when things do get busy around the office.

  • Oh it's another exciting UO this week!

I never thought of walkers as delaying milestones but now that you say it, it totally makes sense.  I always just thought they were dangerous, that's why DD will never use one.  But she loves her jumper, in moderation I see no problem with it.

Badges, I agree.  I know it's completely irrational but seeing the SAHM's Rock! one makes me a little sad that I can't SH with DD.  And yes, if you have started solids you are no longer EBF.  We started solids on Sunday, hence why I removed the EBF badge from my siggy.

My UO:  I think antibacterial soaps, sanitizers etc. are ridiculous.  If you don't expose a kid to germs how is their immune system supposed to learn what to do when they are exposed?  Plus, after being exposed to these all the time, eventually a bacteria will pop up that has adapted to the stuff.  Now it's immune, and now all the bacteria that come from this one are immune as well.  It's just creating super bugs in my opinion....

  • I don't use a walker because my sister fell down the stairs in one and although there are no stairs in our house to fall down, my pedi said not to use them either because they can shorten the ligaments in babies' legs because they walk on their tiptoes.

Also, I don't really like exersaucers. I'd rather have DS playing on the floor then sitting in an exersaucer. Well, my MIL brought one to my house without asking. Needless to say it sits in the corner. The same thing happened with doorway jumper. They scare me, but MIL borrowed one from someone and plopped DS in it when I took him to her house.

However, I do use a jumperoo because DS will bounce and bounce and bounce wherever he is. He even tries to bounce in the bath.

I don't have my own UO today. I'm very boring.

  • Also!

On the topic of immigration, I get so tired of people admonishing immigrants to "just speak English." As though people are not using it or not learning just out of spite or stubbornness. English is not an easy language to learn -- for every grammatical or spelling "rule," there are always a dozen exceptions that must be memorized. I've been working with English-language learners in some capacity for almost 10 years now (with kids, businesspeople, poor immigrant communities, and others), and the impression I get from any community I work with is that the people WANT to learn, and that many of them are actively trying to do so. It's just that it's hard to fit in your hour or two of language study a day between work, family, sleep, and so forth. They likely speak their native language at home with their family, but most are not ignoring the need to learn English.

Also, sometimes I conduct tests of native English speakers, and a lot of them don't achieve a level of "native fluency" (or even CLOSE) on our tests (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). Kinda like here on TB, where you don't have to go very far to find people who think "mom's" is a correct plural form. Just speak English, indeed!

  • Kate- as i agree to an extent on the walker. I just find them a tad dangerous. But as some of the other ladies said- theres no real difference between a walker, jumperoo, etc. If anything id think a walker would be better then a jumperoo since the LO can practice walking. Nonetheless, you keep referring to your Dr, as if this was more their unpopular opinion rather then your own.

My unpopular opinion- LO watches tv and loves it. We watch one episode of mickey mouse clubhouse and little einsteins once per day. And if i need her entertained while i cook dinner sometimes i on-demand little einsteins. Judge away. I dont think her growth will be affected by a few shows spaced out through the day. Plus it helps my sanity.

Ah, I would have to disagree with that. Unless your kid just lives in it I don't think it would do any harm. My nephew loved his walker and he was full out walking by 9 months. Not steps here and there, waking. Now at 11 months he is running.  Kids are all just different developmentally.

But I don't judge/care of anyone does or doesn't use walkers.

  • My uo: I think there should legally have to be like a 3 year time period between your divorce and next marriage.

Example: FI's 22 year old sister has been married twice now. She just got divorced from the last guy 4 months ago and she plans to marry a guy she has been dating for 2 weeks in Colorado next weekend.

I also hate the working mom/SAHM mom badges, along with many others.

Uh....I find the badges HELPFUL, they don't make me "look and feel better" (?!?! - WTF?!?!).  For example, when I posted on the weight watchers thread, because I have the "EBF" badge, people knew to make comments about watching for supply issues.

I think the badges do exactly what you say:  help to "contribute knowledge on a subject area."  My badges identify what subject areas I have knowledge in.

I agree to an extent -- I don't believe in forcing a baby to STTN. But eighteen YEARS? I hope for both you and your LO's sakes that you're getting your sleep before then. I think if a kiddo isn't sleeping well on his own by age 2 or so, it might be time to intervene.
