I started to feel my baby kick and jab at me around a week ago, I was 17 weeks then, now I’m 18 weeks and for the last couple of days I have hardly felt him kick or jab. Maybe once a day I’ll feel a tiny jab. Whereas last week I felt several in an hour or less. I’m concerned but trying not to be. With my first son I felt first kicks around 19 weeks but I can’t remember how consistent it was.
Is this normal to feel them a lot one day and then not feel them for a few days?
@slothstatus I think it’s still pretty normal. I cannot remember with my 2nd when it was consistent. I’ve been feeling movement for a while now and only in the last week what feels like jabs. It’s still not anything consistent and I’m almost 18 weeks. I had an u/s last week and baby kept moving around and I didn’t feel it. Everything was fine.
@slothstatus I think that’s probably pretty normal at this point. I just had my 20w check-up and they said a lot of people still don’t feel movement for another week or so. I also didn’t know until my anatomy scan, but I have an anterior placenta this time so movement feels a lot less consistent than with my daughter. It’s just now getting to where I’m feeling them every day (20.5w).
Q: at how many weeks do y’all plan on having a baby shower?
With my first I was 32 weeks. With this baby my MIL wants to throw it when I’m 28 weeks. I don’t know if that’s a good time to do it… thoughts? I know it doesn’t really matter I just feel it’s still so early to do it lol
@slothstatus you might be more comfortable at 28 weeks? I think any date that works well for you, your host, etc is a good time. Also an earlier one gives you a chance to prepare any gear that you might not have received at the shower and wash things you do get.
I don’t remember how far along I was when I had my first, but a friend wants to host one for me this time and it’ll be when I’m 31 weeks. We were looking for anytime in May- early July. That’s the best week for both of our schedules.
@slothstatus I'm not actually planning on having one this time around... we don't need much + second baby. But I was 28/29 weeks last time around. We weren't sure if we would be moving within the next couple weeks (the head coach my husband worked with was let go four days prior, although we knew it was coming, so knew my husband would be let go too and the next job could be anywhere in the country) so I didn't want to wait around, just in case. I didn't actually think it was that early, though...I hosted my sister's shower in October for her January baby, and my best friend's in early April for her late June baby. I'd say if it works then, who cares? Your schedule matters more than how many weeks along you are. Plus more time to prep and put stuff away (...or return it)!
@slothstatus I think I was 32w last time and it was a zoom covid shower. I think anything later than 28w is great, but if it needs to be earlier to get everyone together that’s fine too! This time I’m not sure. My cousin is surprise pregnant with her first and her mom was the one who threw my last shower. We may do a joint (but focused on cousin since I don’t need much) this summer in VA beach. No clue how far along I’d be. The tough part about the second time around is that the little stuff that’s like an affordable present, I don’t need. What I do need is a wagon, a new toddler bed for DS so that baby can have the crib, new mattress etc.
@slothstatus I think my friends mentioned sometime in either early May or later in June so I’ll either be like 28w or 33/34w lol. We have two other due dates we’re planning around in that group and a lot of vacation in June. I don’t really care. It’s my second and we don’t need much. I told them not to worry about it, but they want me to have a *real* shower since my first was a weird Covid drive-by shower, which is sweet.
@slothstatus with my first I think I was somewhere between 30-33 weeks. For this one I’ll be 32 weeks. I don’t think it quite matters how far along you are, baby is coming whether you have a shower at 28 weeks or at 36 weeks. Earlier is almost better so you have time to get things you didn’t get at your shower
I was something like 34 weeks for the baby shower with my first one - I think it's nice to have it before that time but of course anytime is fine!! Don't think we are having one this time.
My baby shower was early with my first. My parents are snowbirds and head down to Florida usually by mid-October so I was about 21-22 weeks for my shower. We had it in October and DD was a February baby. But that was the timing that worked best so that’s what we did. Editing to add that my coworkers also threw me a shower at 37 weeks at school so I actually had 2 baby showers.
Is anyone craving anything? I have craved nothing this whole pregnancy and then I got a Thai iced tea last week and then I walked like a zombie to the Thai restaurant and ordered a Thai iced tea and that’s it this is all I want everyday. 🤤🧋
I have been craving sushi. I have ate it once a week for the last month or so. As far as food goes, I haven’t really wanted to eat anything and the idea of eating really grosses me out. I have been having to force myself to eat food. It’s really annoying my husband because he will make these elaborate dishes and I look at it with disgust.
@slothstatus with my first I was 36 weeks. I tried to convince my MIL (who hosted) to have it earlier but she refused and I was miserable and already starting to swell at that point. I never got any type of shower for my second. I think friends want to throw one this time around but it will be earlier rather than later. So probably sometime in May.
@lmn823 I’ve had a few cravings that stick around for a few days then it switches to something new. In the last two weeks it was tater tots, chicken sandwiches, then gummy worms, and as of last night…cinnamon toast crunch. I also have a craving for a tater tot breakfast bake but in a specific way that I don’t really know how to accomplish😅
@lmn823 mine are all over the place. But for about a month now I was craving baked hot Cheetos and I couldn’t find them anywhere. Even looked to order online and none were available in my town. A few days ago I found some baked lime hot Cheetos and that satisfied my craving even though they weren’t the exact ones I wanted.
Also craving sour gummy worms and just right now I had an intense craving for Cinnabon cinnamon rolls 🥺🤤🤤🤤 I will now be on a mission to go to a Cinnabon this weekend.
@lmn823 my first pregnancy, I had no real cravings. This time around, I’ve had so many! Everything from grilled cheese to fried pickles to milkshakes and many more.
@ccmrc143 thank you! I work in marketing….not necessarily looking to stay in the tech industry as it feels so unstable right now. Maybe if I end up waiting a bit the market will turn for the better 🤦🏼♀️
Do any of you (especially those with multiple kids already) have any recommendations for books to help prepare toddler for new baby? If so, any recommendations for when in your pregnancy to introduce these? Thanks in advance
@priyadoc My oldest was into Doc McStuffins and Daniel Tiger at the time I was pregnant with my second. She watched some episodes about bringing a new baby home and being a big sister. We also have the Daniel Tiger book about becoming a big brother. Cannot remember the name of the book. We also talked a lot about what to expect when her sister arrived. She was almost 5 when my youngest was born but it was still a huge transition and she hated the crying the most.
I have a question/concern about cramping. I haven't experienced any type of cramping since very early pregnancy (I am currently 19 weeks) but just started to feel some that feel like period cramps. Not too severe but noticeable. I know this can happen for a number of reasons but since I've never felt this before I'm feeling a bit anxious. They seem to subside with some rest or using an exercise ball. Any advice or experience? Edit: I understand this can happen after "doing it" 🫢 but this is the only time I've had any cramps following... Not sure what to think but hopefully nothing to worry about!
Anytime I start cramping I rest on the couch and drink a ton of water. If it goes away I don’t worry about it. If it persists you should call your provider. They may want you to go in for monitoring.
Does anyone have allergies? We just moved back to the east coast after 3 years in the mountain west and I’ve been struggling with my sinuses and runny nose for the past week. I am not sure if it’s allergies or rhinitis related to pregnancy. I know it’s not a cold anymore because no one else is sick (well I guess I can’t know for sure but I’m trying my best to guess). Any idea how you’d know the difference? I looked up allergy meds that are pregnancy safe and it seems like most of the OTC ones are. It’s been sooooo annoying and my face feels like a swollen balloon.
@ccmrc143 yup. I’m queen of allergies. East coaster here, definitely enjoying this weather of course and seeing all the cherry blossoms bloom and pow smack in the face and eyes itch and congested. Already congested from blood flow and now pollen. Anything that’s itchy and makes my eyes puffy im assuming are allergies vs pregnancy congestion. Nasal spray is my go to, I’ve been using flonase. I haven’t had any issues using it and supposedly it’s better using a nasal spray than ingestion a pill. I also do have loratadine 10mg if I need.
@ccmrc143 I’ve had a combo of the pregnancy sniffles and allergies. I’ve noticed if it’s warmer I’m sneezing more and wake with itchy eyes, as the weather is moving towards spring. Last time they had me on Claritin; I normally manage without the meds. You could always ask you OB what would be best to us.
Does anyone remember who got the positive for a trisomy on their NIPT? I can’t remember and I have tried to look for it and can’t seem to find it. I haven’t seen an update and I have had her on my mind a lot.
@emeraldcity603 no I don’t recall a mom on here with positive trisomy (maybe I missed it), but I recall a mom getting a positive for cystic fibrosis, she hasn’t written since then.
@slothstatus I remember the CF diagnosis too. Mainly she was positive and her husband needed to be tested. I’m pretty positive someone had something come back on their NIPT and we haven’t heard an update.
@emeraldcity603 because I'm creepy I figured out how to search posts on here. I think it was @estadt -- right? Wasn't creepy enough to find an update though.
@emeraldcity603 thanks! I had a positive on my 12 week genetic panel (the standard version think it’s also called NT) I am in Ontario Canada so with that positive ohip covered the NTIP and that was low risk for everything! So thankfully baby is healthy and everything looks good so far. I had a situation similar to another mom but we where going to find out as the 3 of us but only my midwives knew that and it was my family doctors I got the results (last week because know one thought to call me when they came in) and we are having a Boy! (But pretending not to know till we do the reveal)
@tumbleweed-1 I just bought a pair of plain black maternity bottoms from Old Navy to go with bikini tops I already own. It was a black version of this one. I have a long torso, so most one piece swimsuits are a wedgie nightmare on me.
I had my anatomy scan today and we saw an echogenic foci in one ventricle of the heart. Everything else looks great. Baby measured right on track and no other abnormalities were found. We did not do genetic testing. I’m getting very different information from my doctor than I am finding on genetic counseling sites. Anyone have any experience with this?
@BeccaJeans1991 I’m not really an active participant here, but saw your question and wanted to reply that we also found an EIF on our boys heart at our ultrasound last week. That was the only unusual finding. Our doc was not alarmed by it, but said that it is a soft marker for Down Syndrome and so it made the baby’s risk go up a bit. He offered us additional testing if we wanted it since we did not do NIPT at 10 weeks, so I got the NIPT done and a maternal serum screen. However, after I did some googling I’m not sure that was even necessary. I had never we heard of EIF, but both google and the doctor on our ultrasound report said they occur on up 7% of normal pregnancies, with the rate increasing as ultrasounds improve, and it seems like a lot of doctors want it taken off the list of soft markers when that’s the only marker because it gets people all nervous but it’s not a health problem and so rarely indicates Down Syndrome on its own. I read lots of stories where doctors had seen hundreds and hundreds of EIFs but never in a baby with Down Syndrome. On the report our doctor said that my risk even with the EIF is less than if I had just gotten pregnant at 35. 🤷♀️ Anyway, for what it’s worth all my tests came back very low risk.
@beccajeans1991 similar to what @ohioforever19 said. My son had an EIF and I was told it was a soft marker for Down syndrome at his anatomy scan. We had declined previous, and further, genetic testing. It was the only “abnormality” that came up. I’ve read (don’t remember where) that depending on one’s ethnicity, a bright spot on the heart can be a more common occurrence during the anatomy scan and isn’t concerning. My son (now 4) was born with the typical amount of chromosomes (no trisomies). I hope that helps. Dr.Google is often not your friend
