Just had my NT scan and blood draw. My measurement was slightly high at 2.4-2.6 so of course I’m freaking out. They said I am still low risk because they saw the nasal bone and heart anatomy looked good. The next 1-2 weeks will be hard to wait for the results. I wanted to start telling some people but now I feel like I need to wait.
@jenep oh I’m sorry you got a high measurement - but it’s not a super high measurement and it’s not a 1:1 correlation- especially with the good feedback on nasal bone and heart. But this wait for the blood test results is damn tough let me tell you. Did they do the first trimester bloods or one of the NIPTs?

@emmasemm Sending you so much wish for peace right now. You sound JUST like I was waiting last week (especially the night prior and day of). I was shaking, had no appetite, couldn't focus, and barely slept. I sure hope they get back to you ASAP.
@emmasemm I'll be refreshing this thread every few minutes today waiting for your results
@jenEP all in all that sounds like a good result. Anecdotally, all of my friends whose LO's had slightly high measurements and no other markers like yours ended up being just fine!
Well. I just got my results! Everything came back negative. And it’s a BOY! I’m in complete shock. I was 100% convinced I was having a girl. I’ve even gotten a few girl clothes. That’ll teach me!
I’m not going to lie, I’m definitely feeling a little bit of disappointment. Even though I know deep down a boy is way better for our family right now. DS is only going to be 2.5 years older so having a play buddy will be awesome. DD is going to be bummed because she wanted a girl. But obviously outside of our control. I think it’ll take a few days to set in.
@miss.sally you will save a lot of money in clothes this way ha and your DS is gonna be amped!! I think your daughter will also just love having a sweet baby to cuddle when he is here
@stassischroeder thank you for the encouraging words. I’m trying hard to stay level headed about it. My risk of Down syndrome is 1/1200 after the NT scan. It went down from my age based risk. My good friend just had a healthy baby after getting an NT reading over 4 and a risk of 1/40. Most of what I’ve read suggests readings between 2.5-3 are almost always fine, just a slight increased risk. I’m still nervous but feeling less panicky than yesterday.
@miss.sally, congrats on the healthy results! I definitely get the gender thing.. it seems like as soon as I got pregnant, I started having these daydreams of what it will look like for our family, and those daydreams almost always include a 'preferred-at-the-time" gender. I might be in a for a shock too! when the gender isn't what a person expected/dreamed about.... well, it kinda throws you for a loop for a bit. But I'm sure your new DS will fit into your family just fine and everything will work out just as it was meant to.
@miss.sally YAY for great results!! And yay again for a little boy!!! I can understand the initial disappointment, just because it's easy to get caught up in daydreams and what ifs. But your son is going to be thrilled!
Thanks everyone - but it will be at least one more sleepless night - still no damn results today! I threw up everything I tried to eat and drink this morning - not morning sickness but just from the stress as I was expecting a call first thing... they let me know lunchtime they still didn’t have it... then my OB called this evening at 7pm to say still not there and she will call them tomorrow - but is only in the office after 2pm so I know not to be waiting for a call in the morning. That was nice of her to do that after hours - but I asked if them delaying the release might mean they don’t have enough fetal dna again and she said yes it could be because they’re testing the second sample. I also asked if they might test the second sample if the first one showed a problem - she said also yes... but said there was really no problem to see on our US so I have to keep repeating to myself that it looks text book to try to help ease my anxiety. She also prescribed going to McDonald’s and buying two portions of fries for my dinner as they do release endorphins and calm you down - so I’ve just done that! And my anxiety level has definitely dropped a notch.

@miss.sally yay for positive results! I understand the slight disappointment with gender results, I feel like it’s perfectly normal, just process how you feel vs. pushing away because that’s when it lingers. Then you can focus on the awesomeness of another baby boy! Yay!
@emmasemm sorry you’re still waiting. McDonalds fries 🍟 are never a bad idea. Hang in there.
Not sure what to add, other than I had my intake appointment yesterday. I felt completely overwhelmed with the information, and then a quick, "So what do you wanna do?". I said, I wish I was given this information 2 weeks prior at my last appt. so DH and I could have reviewed it together. I was also referred to a MFM doctor, which panicked me too......Maybe it was me being overly sensitive, but I was not feeling the person who did our intake. "You didn't bring your last labs?", "You don't remember the name of the medication you were on 2 years ago?"...plus additional remarks. FTM here, this is my first rodeo.
I guess what I came to add for now, is that while the NIPT is not covered under my insurance (under 35), I was told the company Natera who does Panaroma has a max oop of $250. I was crusing their website, and saw they offer financial assistance based upon income/household size. So prices can range $0-$150 with assistance, and up to $250. Just throwing that out there for anyone who may be interested.
DH and I are still undecided if we are going to do NIPT, but our window for NT testing is even smaller because I'm 11 weeks this week, out of town the next, and then have to rush if we decided to do it. I did some reading before this appointment, but I really wish they gave us the packet of information at our 9 week appointment, as it was total overload at once with different statistics and information.
Congrats to everyone who has gotten good results, and to those who know the official sex of the baby @keeksie84@MrsVP614@aprileia@miss.sally seems to make it feel so much more real!! Hang in there @EmilyLove25 on the team green, no advice, but I'm excited for the surprise if you hold out!! Sending strength to those of you waiting @emmasemm and @treetop19 I can't imagine your frustration, so sorry. I’m also feeling less than happy with this whole process unfortunately. They brought me in late it seems compared to you all for testing (12+4), so the NT scan was pretty clear and looked great. I did the Prequel-Myriad-Counsyl, not really sure which of those names to use. It would test for the three trisomies, and four sex chromosome irregularities. Not sure if it is because the NT scan didn't present any risks, but my insurance straight up denied any contribution to the processing of the test, so the cost wouldn't even hit my deductible. I feel confident from the NT scan that nothing major is going on, but reading up a little on the sex chromosome irregularities, a couple seem like they may not present physical traits until puberty or may be something less obvious like a learning delay. I have about 30 days to re-activate the test, so stuck in limbo on that. The most frustrating part for me is I called my OB to see if I declined the NIPT, whether they would just proceed with the Penta screen I took in previous pregnancies and she said because of my age (36) they don't offer that test because it would present elevated levels anyway. And the Penta tested for neural tube defects which from what I've read don't show up in the NIPT, so I would have preferred it (from what little I know about both).
Thanks everyone for the kind words. I’m definitely coming around to the idea more. I think I wanted a boy, but wanted to shop for a girl. Silly as that seems!! DS will have a ton of fun with a brother close in age. I’m just thankful hat the testing came back clear.
Totally normal to have some shock or a little disappointment if you wanted another boy or girl. Anyone that shamed you or makes you feel bad is just an ass! It’s okay to have a moment of honesty where you say “I’m a little bummed”, you’re still gonna love that little baby exactly the same when they’re born!!
So I had my 2nd visit with OB yesterday. As I thought, my insurance doesn’t do NIPT unless you’re AMA or high risk. So I do the California Prenatal Screening which is blood work now at 10w and then u don’t even get results until u do the second round of blood work at 15-18w (and of course mine won’t be until 16w bc I have to wait for the next OB appt for it). 🤦🏽♀️ so I hoped I would get some peace of mind soon but looks like really I won’t know all the things until like week 18 after anatomy scan and results from CPS get back. I am doing the NT scan next Friday so that’s good. But grrrrrr I wish they offered NIPT to everyone!!! Bah, not a patient person and also don’t like not having control lol first lessons in parenthood I suppose 😩😩
@mrsc918 Oh man, same thing happened to me today! I went in for my 2nd visit with the OB and had the NT scan, which they weren't able to even do because the baby wasn't cooperating — it was on its tummy and head the whole time, kicking its legs around. So I got blood work drawn (Stepwise Part 1, it is called) and then I go back again in 4 weeks on September 26 for more blood work (Stepwise Part 2). I don't think I get any results until after the second part. My OB office is awful at communicating information like this, even when I ask them repeatedly. They sort of just shoved a bunch of papers toward me to take to the lab and shooed me out the door.
They did mention that I was going to get some blood work sent to Counsyl... and that Counsyl would get in touch with me about how much out-of-pocket expense it will cost and I can decide then if I want to pay for the results. I'm not sure if this is just cystic fibrosis testing or if it's something further like NIPT.
I feel disappointed. It was great to see my little bean on the ultrasound but I am hugely bummed out that the NT scan didn't go the way it was supposed to. Patience is so not my strong suit, but I'll try to hang in there until I hear anything and/or go for my appointment on 9/26 (which suddenly sounds so far away).
Am I the only one not doing NIPT testing?? I’m 31 and didn’t do it with my first baby either. We had a normal NT scan and did all of the genetic testing last time around.
But i i feel like I’m the only one not getting the additional testing. My doctor doesn’t seem to think I need it. 🤷🏻♀️
ETA- Just re read through this whole thread for answers. Now I’m just kinda pissed that my doctor seemed to brush me off. Looking into Counsyl’s reduced rates.
I got my NIPT testing done Tuesday. My DH insists that I wait for him to be with me when we find out the results. Which I completely understand, BUT he works in oil and gas and sometimes is gone for weeks! Lately he hasn’t had a schedule and just gets called out for unknown amounts of time. I currently have two boys and am dying to know if we will be adding another boy! I need some self control for when this email comes in... I don’t know if I can keep myself from peeking!😅
Just got my test results back from NIPT today and everything came back negative. I'm always shaking when that phone call comes in. Still doing an NT scan next week as well but really because I am just excited to see how baby is growing. I had my midwife call a cake baker to tell them the sex and we are going to tell our families with cake and find out whether it's a boy or girl during that time as well!
Me: 34, DH: 33 // Met: 10.21.2007 // Married: 9.18.2015 BFP: 4.29.2016 // EDD: 1.2.2017 (IT'S A BOY!) Born 12/26/16 BFP: 2.10.19 // and MC on 3.19.19 BFP: 7.9.19 // EDD 3.16.20
So! Finally, almost 3 weeks after my first blood drawn my Harmony results are in! Big relief all round - low risk for the trisomies! We only get the sex linked results back after 14 weeks (law in Germany), but I’m so relieved the trisomies are clear. It will now be a much more relaxing weekend - before I ramp up for the NT scan next Wednesday
@amykduffy that’s a great idea to have the surprise cake! Glad your midwife was ablè to do that for you.
@sls0324 can you open it on skype or FaceTime with him maybe? I could not wait if my DH was gone weeks. A few days yes, but no more!
@mrsc918@malidocious the second try screen is a little old fashioned but also should include testing for neural tube defects as well - so you will get a more complete picture either before or to go with what they see at the anatomy scan. I do wonder why insurance companies will pay for one and not the other - with two blood draws and analyses at least where I am the cost ends up being the same as eg for Harmony... but I think it’s because before they swap tests in and out of standard they wait for a certain amount of evidence to make sure it’s value for money. If you want to pay yourself, your OB should support I hope. And like many others said in this thread self pay can be relatively inexpensive if you tell them you’re self pay. But on the other hand, it’s optional and if you get stressed like me, having another result every week is probably not the best thing! Though I will do the AFP draw at 16w for neural tube defects... and next week we have the NT scan... so the “test stress” is going to keep on coming for now

@larenm2123, I'm only doing the NIPT testing because I'm over 35 and my insurance covers it. Otherwise, I wouldn't be doing it, and I think that's fairly normal among the under 35 crowd. I didn't do any additional testing with my DS, who I was pregnant with when I was 34.
@emmasemm SO relieved for you. What a long wait! @Malidocious I totally get the disappointment but OMG to your Ultrasound. Looks like a BABY! @laurenm2123 When I had my first I was 32 years old and did the NT and that blood work but not the NIPT. I had it with my second because I had become more of a terrified person but was 34 going to be 35 when he arrived. I had it this time because now I'm legit old at 36 (37 when delivering) and a full blown PGAL mess haha.
@laurenm2123@silverhope I'm not getting the NIPT done (as far as I know). I am 33, so insurance won't cover it unless something abnormal showed up on the NT scan. I had the NT scan yesterday but the baby did not cooperate at all so they weren't able to take any measurements. I got the first round of blood drawn yesterday and go back for a second round of blood draws in four weeks. Apparently this blood work is different than the NIPT blood work, but I don't really know the difference between the two blood tests, honestly. One of my tests is apparently a special one just for CF through Counsyl... not sure why they don't just test for everything. As long as everything comes back looking normal, I'm satisfied.
@EmilyLove25 OMG thank you! I can't believe what a baby my little peanut looks like now! Watching it stretch out its arms and legs and shake its butt around (honestly looked like it was twerking in there) was so amazing and fun, but the lack of cooperation for the NT scan was a bummer. I'd like to believe that the tech, or at least the OB, would tell me if anything looked physically abnormal at this point in the sonogram (I mean, right?). Trying to stay positive, but I was really banking on some instant reassurance back there. I am eternally grateful that the bean looks to be doing so great, though.
Did anyone do their NIPS/NIPT testing through Invitae? I am refreshing my results like a crazy woman. Their website says 7 days average processing time and with the holiday, it's unlikely I will get the results before mid-next week.
I had my testing done on Aug. 15th and still haven't heard back. I am so tempted to call my OB before the office closes for the weekend but they did tell me the turn around time is about 2 weeks so I feel like I should at least give it the full 2 weeks. I had my NT scan and all looked great but still very anxious about the blood test results.
@jenEP mine will most likely be done with Invitae this time, but I don't have the blood drawn until 9/5. I know with Counsyl the website notified me when the results were ready, but they didn't release the details of the test on the website until my nurse or doctor called me to review them.
@stacey6689 I totally would call. It doesn't hurt AT ALL! I called many times, and also I called them when they were in BEFORE they called me. I say give a call! Why not?
Just had my blood draw for Natera - Panorama NIPS. The way my doctor described the results was that they would come back definitive (either way) for DS and other trisomies, whereas NT scan would come back with a risk factor. I had read lots of posts on the benefits of getting both NIPS and NT done, (thanks @stassischroeder !!) but DH and I ended up decided on just doing the NIPS. I'm not AMA but have great insurance so it was covered! Hoping with the holiday weekend I can set up my online portal through Natera on Monday. Has anyone used them before?
I'm using Materit21. It was what my doctor is contracted with (Scripps). I had my blood drawn 8/24. I called today and they said they were still processing. Since Monday is a holiday, I most likely have to wait the entire weekend until Tuesday for the results. Between the 1st trimester screen and this, it was 8 vials of blood. It was by far the most I've ever had to do...
I feel the pain. The waiting game pain.

@jenEP all in all that sounds like a good result. Anecdotally, all of my friends whose LO's had slightly high measurements and no other markers like yours ended up being just fine!

@emmasemm sorry you’re still waiting. McDonalds fries 🍟 are never a bad idea. Hang in there.
EDD: 3/19/20

I don’t think it is common for people under 35 to elect to pay for an NIPT, but obviously do whatever makes you comfortable. I will not be doing it.

@stassischroeder thanks I was really a mess
@mrsc918 @malidocious the second try screen is a little old fashioned but also should include testing for neural tube defects as well - so you will get a more complete picture either before or to go with what they see at the anatomy scan.

@laurenm2123 @silverhope I'm not getting the NIPT done (as far as I know).
