Re: Question Thread

  • @jamidine I’m the same way with the panorama. I have three girls and never got it done. I have no family history of anything, but being 34 (35 in Oct) I really don’t know what to do with this pregnancy. 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • Anybody else feel like they are not pregnant? I can't wait until my next u/s and/or I start showing! I get twinges in my stomach and my boobs are still tender, but it still really doesn't feel real...
  • I've read so many mixed reviews on this... I want to get my hair done before some family pictures with the in-laws at the end of the month, but I'll only be about 11 weeks along at that time. Are highlights considered safe then? They wouldn't touch my scalp, but I understand the fumes may also present a concern. Generally speaking, I'm not hyper-concerned with every rule I come across, but do try to stick to the important ones.
  • I am 7 weeks this week. I feel tired, look bloated and can see my boobs getting bigger. No morning sickness. Every now and then a little nauseous but haven’t puked. I’m in your boat where I don’t feel super pregnant. But it’s early!
  • @alicia__e I didn’t start feeling much until 7 weeks. Even now at almost 8 weeks my symptoms are very much on and off.

@knottiee3214f5bbcce2b89 I’ve been told it’s fine as long as you do it in a well ventilated area. Also, would you mind changing your username? It would be easier to tag you in threads and get to know you. We have a thread called “knottie usernames” that can help you.
  • @alicia__e me!  I had quite a few symptoms like fatigue, tender breasts, nausea around week 7 & 8 but since then it's dropped off quite a bit.  Now I really only have tender breasts right when I wake up.  The fatigue and nausea is basically gone but I'm not sure if part of that is because I'm on vacation and not living "real life" or working.  My boobs are still giant with blue veins and my appetite is slightly lower, but other than that no significant symptoms.
  • @valerie4786 @alicia__e
wanna take some of my symptoms off my hands??? LOL I'd gladly hand them over!

  • @stashattack sometimes I feel like having more symptoms would ease my mind that things are going well in there!  Not having many symptoms makes me worried some days!

Thank you for the heads up on the username, I was totally oblivious! Just changed it (I'm Allison, by the way 😊)
  • @allis0n_b_92 I got my hair done a few days after I found out I was pregnant this time. I also got my hair done when I was pregnant with my son. I had asked my doctor and she said it was completely fine. Most if the products used these days are safe and there really isnt much research showing that it gets into your blood stream. You can be extra safe by not doing your roots.

I also have had my hair coloured (both base colour & highlights) throughout my previous pregnancy & will be doing so again in this pregnancy.
just be aware that the dye may not take the same way as normal due to the change in hormones.
  • First pregnancy I didn’t put any dye in my hair this time I did but not to the roots. It’s a personal choice I think. But I agree with @leprechaunlady the further you get the less the dye might take to your hair. The colour could be off or just completely wash off. My hairdresser says she sees it all the time
  • Thanks ladies! I typically just do highlights that don't hit anywhere near my scalp anyways, so I think I'm going to go for it!
  • So I had my first ultrasound yesterday (showing I'm 9 weeks which is about what I guessed) the technician said baby looked good and heartbeat was good. However, I saw she had typed that I have a 2 cm internal bleed. I havent had any bleeding, but I did have a miscarriage back in jan 2018. When we talked to the Dr he said that he has seen these often before and that in a lot of cases there isn't anything to worry about. But he wanted to take the precaution and gave me a progesterone shot and wants me to go again next week for another shot and then also scheduled me to have another ultrasound on the 25th to look at it and see how it is. Has anyone else had this?
  • @valerie4786 I went through about a week where nausea went away and it worried me too but now every night I get nauseous and bubble guts 🤢😢 symptoms give me some piece of mind I guess but now that I’ve heard the heartbeat can they please go away again
  • I somewhat asked this in the PGAL thread but what should I expect at my first intake with the midwife, I’ll be 12 weeks that day. They told me to expect a 45-60 min appointment ( with my OB last time everything was max 15-20 min.) Would the Midwife use a Doppler at that time too?
  • I may have missed it, but what Doppler do you guys recommend?
  • @c1kc1kpol1cn1k they’ll just go over your current health, weigh you, take a urine sample, maybe do a pap if you’re due for one, answer any questions you have and talk about what’s to come...and yes by 12 weeks the midwife will likely be able to find the heartbeat with the doppler! (But absolutely don’t panic if she can’t find it.)

(Side note, I’m in Canada. This is how first midwife appointments go here. Maybe it’s different if you’re somewhere else!)
  • My dr won’t even listen to the heartbeat yet. She said dopplers can damage the heart if you use them too early. So I’d be afraid to use one at home.

  • We do have a doppler (not sure what make it is) but I have never been able to use it properly myself. My husband is a doctor & could always find the heartbeat in my previous pregnancy but it only made me anxious as I could never get it myself.

I don't have a doppler because I'm one of those people who would freak TF out if I couldn't find a heart beat.

My doctor normally checks the heartbeat at every visit. With my son I had quite a few appointments (I went every other week starting around 16 or 18 weeks). Baby turned out fine.

Edit- I just dont want anyone to freak out that if their doctor checks the babies heartbeat that they are going to cause something to go wrong with the baby.

I’ve never heard the Doppler can cause issues too early in pregnancy. I asked my re about getting a Doppler and she only warned about not being able to find the heartbeat early, which I am already fully aware of. She is also not one to do unnecessary testing if it’s not evidence based so I feel like she would have said something if there was something to be wary of. With ds I was at the drs weekly for almost half of the pregnancy getting Doppler’s and ultrasounds. I’d like to use it a little later on to help ds get accustomed to the baby as he freaked when we told him the other night.

  • When used by a trained health professional, fetal heart Dopplers are entirely safe. But in the hands of Mom? Not so much.” straight from the article. What makes them unsafe if when they are used incorrectly. Though I would also trust a published science paper over a post on the bump when it comes to safety of medical equipment

  • Well I have an at home doppler and I am very satisfied. I don't know what brands are best I just got the one with the best reviews on Amazon for a reasonable price (60 cad). Like I said in an earlier post, I haven't felt pregnant because I basically have no symptoms except peeing a lot. I have been thinking the worst and been pretty upset until yesterday when I heard the baby's heartbeat (and mine too  ) as clear as day on the doppler. It has really lifted me up. I feel like I needed it. But that is just my view. Obviously, listen to your doctor and make your own choices.
  • Is anyone’s toddler acting crazy? I don’t know if it’s because he knows I’m pregnant but we have made it to a whole new level of acting out recently.
  • @kbrown2385 - Mine has been acting up a little but it's because she's not getting as much attention when I'm laying on the couch feeling pukey.
  • @marebear15 ds dumped paint and glue all over my dining room table yesterday 🤦🏻‍♀️
  • My DD has been so helpful. Bringing me water, telling me to rest in bed, patting my back if I’m having morning sickness 😂 she’s not even 3 🤦‍♀️
  • @c1kc1kpol1cn1k can she teach my 4 year old?
  • My kids have been nuts lately too. Probably because I have been lying on the couch half dead most of the time and they’re bored/craving more attention. I know they’d be so helpful and wonderful if I told them why I’ve been such a blob, but I don’t trust them to keep it a secret so I can’t tell them what’s up yet. 😩

Question for any AMA Mama's:. Have you been scheduled for/plan to have an amniocentesis done? I got all my paperwork from the high risk doctor I have to go see in August. I have four appointments in one day and the last one is an amniocentesis. I'm talking to my ob when I go in July because the thought of having one scares the crap out of me and I don't want to have one done.

Anyone care to share a past experience?

I have been AMA for my past two pregnancies and this one, and no one has ever suggested an amnio.   That seems crazy.   Do you have other high risk issues?  I would definitely talk to your doc about that, because it certainly isn't standard for AMA, and it's not something they can make you do if you aren't comfortable with their reasoning.

  • @kbrown2385 my toddler has been acting like his normal crazy self but he's started to fight me at meal times and its driving me crazy. I just ignore him but I'm going to lose my mind if I keep making him food that he doesnt want to eat.
  • @dumbledoredies I’m contemplating reinstating nap time. He’s out of control with the fighting and arguing all the time. I’m sure it’s a combination of turning 4 in a couple of weeks and knowing there’s a baby coming. He’s been a mess by mid afternoon and it’s making me crazy.
  • @kbrown2385 mines 1.5 year olds and I live for naptime. I dont look forward to the day when he no longer takes a nap 😬 I used to be a nanny and 3 years old was the hardest age for me. They are so deviant and it drove me insane.
  • @smount2011 I’ve been AMA for 5 pregnancies and this is the first one where amniocentesis was mentioned. And only because I have a vanishing twin so NIPT won’t work. My dr gave amnio as an option but warned that there is a risk of miscarriage. I don’t want to risk it.

  • I have a question. I will be about 9 weeks (based on lmp) for my first doctor's appointment. What are the chances that they'll perform a vaginal ultrasound? Can I refuse it or is it not that bad/uncomfortable? Sometimes I feel weak because doctors make me nervous.
  • @ang3lbb I was 9+4 at my first scan & I had to sign a waiver to say they could do a transvaginal ultrasound just incase they couldnt see what they needed on the abdominal one. However, it wasnt necessary as the abdominal one was very clear.
  • @leprechaunlady thanks for sharing your experience!! It helps my anxiety. As long as the doctor makes me feel at ease I'm sure I'll be fine.
