Re: The Great Question Thread

  • @xilovemybabiesx As the other ladies shared, don’t worry about it! That’s perfectly normal! At my 11 week ultrasound baby’s heart rate was 179. I asked doctor if it was okay it was on the high end and she assured me it’s normal and that baby’s heart rate will go down as he/she gets bigger later on.

  • I preface this with saying I'm seeing my OB at my appointment on Friday...but of course I'm freaking out the eff out.

A few years ago I did a titer test for MMR and while it was immune to all three, the measles result equaled the lowest number on the immune range. My doctor recommended a booster...but of course...like a complete moron...I forgot and didn't do it. And now there's a measles outbreak in LA and I'm terrified of going out in public and I have these visions of being shut-in for the next 6 months.

I know you can't get an MMR booster while pregnant...so what are my options?? Live life as a hermit?

Hopefully my doctor can help talk me down because my emotions are in hyper-drive.

  • @mvc003 yikes, that's a hard one. I have no advice on what you should do other than washing your hands anytime you touch something that others have touched. I think it's airborne though, so you could get it by just breathing the same air as someone who is sick.
  • @emeraldcity1214 thanks! hopefully I'm just being extra. I don't usually go to too many large public places or have the chance to hang out with kids. I guess I'll see what my OB says on Friday!
  • @mvc003 I'm right with you.  I also live in LA and I'm a teacher, and it's been going around the local schools (was at both USC and UCLA from what I understand).  I have no idea what my immune status is — I was vaccinated as a child but that was when they were using less effective vaccines.  Plus, I'm on immunosuppressant medication for Crohn's disease.  And like @emeraldcity1214 said, it's airborne.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best.

And wishing that people would just vaccinate their kids!!  This is always an issue for me, as an immunosuppressed person, but particularly now that I'm pregnant.

  • Agree with all the other comments re vaccination.. I actually don't even know when they do the second dose @klstone25? My son is only a few months older than your daughter and I don't recall him getting the second dose yet. I should check his records, I actually didn't even think about the second dose. When we went to an informational night with the pediatrics practice affiliated with my OBGYN there were SO MANY QUESTIONS from other parents about vaccinations schedules and delaying and they basically said if you don't want to vaccinate on schedule then this practice isn't for you. MH and I were happy to hear that.
  • @creamcheeseplease a lot of practices are taking that stance now. They aren't allowing a delayed schedule of any kind. Personally I think it's cruel to take a baby to the doctor weekly for a shot. They become fearful of the doctor/nurses.
Not to mention they are practically a little pin cushion at that point. It's best to get it all done at once.

@mimigarden oh that's even more tough working around kids! It's really scary. I was vaccinated too, but like you said, it must have been when they were using less effective vaccines because it seems to have diminished. It just feels like a completely ridiculous thing to be worrying about in 2019. Hoping for the best for both of us!!

  • @mvc003 just wanted to put your mind at ease a bit..when pregnant with my son in 2016 I was an elementary teacher and the secretary at our school got measles from her son who got it in his dorm at college.  They were both vaccinated, but still contracted it.  I was so so so nervous since I had contact with her daily, but all was well.  The varicella (chicken pox) vaccine has never worked for me, I’ve gotten is 3 times and still test not immune, so for some people it just happens.  Don’t be kicking yourself!
  • mc0303mc0303 member
@rogro118 Thanks so much for sharing that! Definitely helps put my mind at ease. That's so wild that they both still contracted the measles. Glad to hear everything was okay for you though considering your daily interactions! <3

  • If you are uncertain of your immunity status have your OB rerun your titers and find out if you have a need for concern.
  • Re: the vaccines and not doing it- pisses me off because I’m basically going to have to find out which family parties my cousin is going to and bringing her children to until my baby is fully vaccinated because she refuses to vaccinate her youngest kids. Her oldest has asthma and she somehow blames her vaccines NOT that she smoked during pregnancy and after around the kid 🤦🏼‍♀️ Plus with whole chicken pox vaccines- sure it’s relatively harmless but you never know plus people who I know who’ve gotten shingles say it’s absolutely horrible so that’s reason enough
  • @kopp5988 keeping my beautiful daughter from having pock marks on her face is reason enough!
  • @emeraldcity1214 Also so true! I still have scars from when I got it in kindergarten!

I had my 12 week appointment yesterday and will be traveling a decent amount the next few weeks. I asked my OB about the measles outbreak and potential risks and she was not concerned. I had the adult booster in 2013, but my husband hasn’t. She said that we’ve done all we can to be prepared by getting the vaxes and to just breathe. She was more concerned about the long plane ride. So hopefully all will be fine
  • @kmb412 I flew a ton in my last pregnancy, including a few overseas flights. Just make sure to hydrate well and get up and move around often. My last OB recommended compression stockings to help with swelling and reduced blood clots (though I was much farther along when I flew long distance then).

  • @gumby22c what kind of compression socks did you get?

@emeraldcity1214 my OB actually wrote me a script for some rx kind, they were full on tights that I got a pharmacy. I flew long distance at late 2nd tri and late 3rd tri and he said full leg compression was better at that stage. But any earlier in pregnancy I probably just would have worn my running compression socks, which you can either get online or at an athletic store.

Late to the vaccination comments. My Dad wasn’t vaccinated as a kid (I’m not clear on why, he missed the MMR vaccine, possibly because he was sick because apparently his twin got it). When he was in his early 40s he got insanely sick. Admitted to the ICU, his neck and head were enormous and he could barely breathe and struggled to communicate at all. It took a few days for the doctors to realize what was wrong because my Dad was under the impression he had all his vaccines. He had contracted the mumps. Not being dramatic at all when I say he almost died from it and it was a traumatic experience all around for the whole family. He was on ICU for two weeks at least. And he was incredibly angry with my Gram. He still gets mad about it and this was over 20 years ago. All it took was for my Dad to come across a kid with puffy cheeks at a doctor’s office (he can still picture the kid) and it almost killed him. Vaccinate. Always, always vaccinate.

  • The Dr told me yesterday I don't have immunity to hepatitis, chicken pox (which I knew from last pregnancy) and also rubella. Ugh. I got chicken pox as a kid and was given all vaccines but I guess the "R" in MMR didn't stick. Have to be careful now as I also live in an affected city. 😷
  • I asked my OB on Wednesday if she could check my immunity for measles. She told me they are recommending to have those checked just Rubella. She re-ran mine this week.
  • STM: did anyone use a postpartum belly band that you really liked? I never used one with my past pregnancies but I’d like to this time so looking for a good one.
  • @ameliabird811 I got the belly bandit one and liked it, but it was a little stiff when sitting.  I also got another one at the hospital after I had a version with my son and that one was much more flexible and comfortable, but I have seen anything similar to it in stores.
  • I posted this in symptoms too but I suppose it’s a question soo.. much  I have a bloodwork results question..Is anyone else on thyroid meds?  I just got my blood results from Friday and my tsh is now super low at 0.02.  Of course it’s after 5:00 so I can’t talk to my endo today.  I started on levothyroxine in September after my tsh was up around 5.5 and I was going through IVF, they wanted it below 2.  Any insight on if this can be harmful to baby?  I’m concerned of course and kicking myself for not asking to have it tested before 10 weeks

@rogro118 I am also dealing with low TSH. It can be normal in early pregnancy for TSH levels to be low, they can return to normal throughout second tri. From what I’ve been told, your levels are very low and close to undetectable, so it may be beyond the normal dip and require monitoring/treatment. Were your T3/T4 normal? Are you still taking levothyroxine?
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @Kurtni thanks for replying!  Yes I’m still taking levothyroxine, 75mcg so I’m assuming they’ll experiment with lowering ther dose,  but I won’t hear from my endo until at least tomorrow.  I’m going to skip my dose in the morning or cut it in half.  My tsh was .45 in February when I was last tested so I’m surprised it dropped so quick.  I had been on the 75mcg dose since October.  My T4 was normal and always has been, they did not test T3 this time.  I’m already heading to MFM in two weeks, so I guess this will just add to their list of things to monitor 😳
  • @emeraldcity1214 I had my OB check me for measles immunity too and she said rubella is what can cause harm to the fetus but added measles to my bloodwork paperwork anyways. I need to call and see what the results were. The measles cases in Orange County are too close to me to feel comfortable:/
  • mc0303mc0303 member
@ameliabird811 I feel you on the OC cases!! Some of the locations in LB I frequent...and literally went to some of the places the days listed. My OB pretty much said there wasn't much I could do besides playing it safe and avoiding people who are obviously sick....great advice....NOT. I'm annoyed.
  • KurtniKurtni member
@rogro118 That’s good that T4 was normal. if you don’t hear from them I would definitely call in the morning. You basically went from hypoactive to hyperactive so thats a big swing.

  • @Kurtni I agree, so strange!
  • When is everyone telling work? I’ve got a small bump now at 14 weeks now and am worried that people will start noticing.

My plan was to wait until 16w, but I told right before I hit 14w. Unfortunately I was called out my someone and felt like if people were noticing, I might as well just bite the bullet and notify. I'm so much more comfortable now that I can just wear whatever and not worry if my bump shows.
  • JBos82JBos82 member
@kopp5988 I told my boss when I was around 8-9 weeks because we have schedules and I knew she’d have to make some major adjustments and move work around to other people and I wanted to give her a big enough window. I told HR when I was 11 weeks. I’m 13 weeks and haven’t been able to hide my bump for the last week or so, so I figure more people will start realizing soon enough.

  • @kopp5988 my boss knew we were doing fertility treatments, so shes known from the start. But I shared with the rest of the girls I work with last weekend at 12 weeks. It's getting hard to hid even though my work shirt is a bit loose, it won't be for too much longer.

@kopp5988 I'm 13+2 and still haven't told my work. I think I'm going to wait for a little while longer. I've been wearing a lot of loose dresses and clothes, which is kind of my style anyway. I don't really have any bump to speak of though even though I can feel my body changing. BOO!

  • @kopp5988 I told my boss Monday and sharing with the team I manage tomorrow. Also telling other managers tomorrow. I'll be 14 weeks tomorrow. I'm a project manager and we are already thinking of implementations for later this year and early next year and I want there to be time to have a solid plan.
  • I think a couple people on my team suspect. I'm not a bean pole to begin with but I've noticed some glances at my stomach and I've worked from home a lot recently for doctors appointments. I also ordered a diet coke at after work drinks last week which my boss gave me a funny look for. I'll probably wait another 2 weeks after most of my family finds out. I'll be 15 weeks at that point.
