  • @SmashJam That's awesome! Homemade bread and bagels are the BEST.

  • @babygagnon2018 I was offered a promotion at my job earlier in my pregnancy. Once my main boss found out about the pregnancy she hired an outsider behind my back and totally "forgot" about offering me the promotion, when we had several meetings and calls about it prior to her finding out about my pregnancy. No, I can't SAY it was because she found out I was pregnant.. but..
Either way, I think you should be fine but to be safe, maybe just don't mention the growing babe until after you're hired!
  • @acunamatada they were not hard! few ingredients, shortish rise time (two hours) and the boiling is the part that is the weirdest but not that hard. This is the recipe I used:

@babygagnon2018 I would definitely be honest but disclose post offer so you know you weren't discriminated against initially.  and also consider the leave policy like someone else mentioned. I did have a friend who waited to disclose until after the offer and they were ok with it. It was a part time gig anyway and they had planned on her not finding a job until post baby so she wasn't super worried about the leave because they had saved just in case.
  • @ashbub714 oh gosh, are you feeling any better today? That sounds beyond miserable!
  • @SmashJam my MFM practice always schedules fetal echos for 24 weeks.  I don’t know the reasoning behind it but in my last three pregnancies my fetal echo has been at 24 weeks.  I’d push for it to be later if only for an extra look at the baby!

  • @noideawhatshesdoing I am feeling better today. Still nauseated but managed by to keep the little I did eat down today. Thanks for asking :)
  • @ashbub714 how awful I hope you feel so much better! I am a baby while puking too if its any consolation!

Thanks for the feedback on the fetal echo guys! I will definitely ask for it later I am pro extra look at the baby for sure!

  • @babygagnon2018 I had a friend who was in final negotiations for a job with a small PR firm and told them she was pregnant. They basically recinded her offer because they couldn’t afford to be down someone that soon. But it had never been official, just verbal, so she couldn’t do much. Basically, be careful.

@babygagnon2018 I have no direct experience but I’m a part of a mom group on FB that has debated this a lot.  Essentially the opinions always come down to two camps: (1) be upfront from the beginning—if they don’t hire you because of it, it’s probably not where you want to be anyways; and (2) wait until you have a written job offer otherwise, as you mention, they can pass you over and it’s very difficult to prove that’s why.

As for me, it would probably depend on whether or not I was showing during the interview.  In the US, by law they’re not allowed to ask anything, but let’s be honest interviewers are human and there’s a good chance they will notice if you’re interviewing at eight months pregnant.  My thought is that if you’re already noticeably showing, it’s probably better to just acknowledge what they’ve already noticed and reassure them that you’re committed to the job.

    Good luck!

  • Question for all the ladies discussing it...
fetal echo? What is it? I don’t remember having one in my last pregnancy unless it was combined with my anatomy scan at 18 weeks? My anatomy scans tend to be a solid 2 hours, if that the normal length? Or is it likely they’re combined? They do look at the heart and all the chambers and the blood flow. I actually just had my anatomy scan today and she looked at the heart a lot. Baby looked healthy but I have to go back in 4 weeks (because insurance won’t cover it any sooner??) to get a better look at the spine because little guy was being stubborn.... again. He did the same think for my NT scan.
  • Question NPR:

how would you approach this problem? I live in a great smallish neighborhood with lots of kids and it's safe and just perfect for our family. For the past couple of yes, I have noticed that a high school kid in the next cul-de-sac over has been meeting random kids (from outside our neighborhood) at their circle to sell whatever to them. He is almost always in his car, ready to drive away immediately after the deal, and the visitors are either on foot or they drive in. sometimes they leave right after he does or they linger in the cul-de-sac for a while without him.

This happens frequently, during the day, in plain sight to anyone familiar with the goings-on of our neighborhood (we walk our dog at least twice a day and walk right by his street daily). Yesterday a random car was waiting outside my house, and before I could find out why they drove off and into his cul-de-sac instead, having clearly been at the wrong house at first...my house. What if it was someone who had beef with him? (I verified they were customers when I drove past his street and saw the car still hanging out...with everyone sitting inside)

I want the dealing to leave our neighborhood but I am afraid of getting him in trouble and him finding out I reported him and retaliating against my house/family. Nothing scares me more than unstable and immature teenagers while i have small children--they do dumb shit all the time.

What do I do? If I call police I am not sure what they can offer? I obvs have no idea when he decides to deal and I don't want to be involved in anything...ugh.

  • @paytonpedro a fetal echocardiogram is a more detailed look at the heart, chambers, and the bloodflow through the veins and arteries. They are usually only done if something raises a flag during the anatomy scan that warrants a closer look, family history of heart issues at birth, etc.

This will be my third pregnancy that I’ve undergone multiple fetal echos. @SmashJam I was supposed to have this fetal echo at 22 weeks, but they moved me UP to 18 weeks to be the same day as my A/S. Pretty weird. My first pregnancy they started them at 18 weeks and some change because that’s when they noticed an issue. Last pregnancy I got one at 22 weeks and now they’re doing it at 18. Oh well!
  • @paytonpedro am Echo is an in depth study of the heart and it’s associated vessels. It’s only done when there is an indication (high risk, family hx, markers on other US, AMA, etc). You likely won’t have one done if you don’t have one scheduled already.

  • @flockofmoosen3 I would call the police and report the dealing. I don’t think he would be able to pinpoint its you. If you were concerned, could you add a home security system as a deterrent for any retaliation?
  • @flockofmoosen3 definitely get the police involved.  This is happening in plain sight so it could be anyone reporting him. It could be the police doing their own thing . I wouldn't be concerned about him getting in trouble as he is doing something illegal...I doubt they are exchanging Pokemon cards...I'm sorry you have to deal with this :(
  • @flockofmoosen3 agree, is definitely call the police and tell them what you have seen. You can also emphasize your desire to remain anonymous.

@paytonpedro I am only having a fetal echo because my parents had a child before me with a heart defect. My doctors think the risk for me is super low but would rather take a detailed look after our second anatomy scan just to be sure
  • @flockofmoosen3 call the police. Are you able to get the license plate at least since the leave pretty quickly? If they are there pretty religiously maybe a cop can post up nearby? I must say a cul de sac is probably the dumbest place to hang and deal since they can be easily trapped by cops. Keep call the cops even if they don’t show up the first time. Maybe even to a fellow concerned neighbor to call? Power in numbers i say. As long as your not trying to investigate yourself and exposing yourself that way they shouldn’t be able to pinpoint you. I stare people down on my street when they look suspicious nothing wrong with that. Stay safe and report on!
  • @flockofmoosen3 what about talking to his parents? Of course that could backfire so I would only do that if you really know them and feel like they are the kind of people who would do something about it/not sell you out. Otherwise I really don't think the police are allowed to tell who reported it, so I wouldn't worry too much about him finding out that you reported it.

Has anyone done an elective ultrasound at one of those 3d/4d places? I was thinking about surprising my husband with one and turning it into a date day as a Valentine's gift, but I can't decide if it's worth it. Our anatomy scan is Tuesday but I know that is less about seeing baby and more about looking at organs and what not. But it's around $90 at the place by me, which seems pretty expensive.
  • @flockofmoosen3 Definitely call and tell them you want to remain anonymous. You can just tell them you've seen suspicious cars/people multiple times a day. Chances are they will start their own investigation and have a cop hang out and watch for a little while until they can get some evidence and then they will do something. I also second the home security system/camera.
  • @flockofmoosen3 I would definitely call. I also agree that it's been in plain sight so anyone could be reporting it. Our community has something called 'Silent Observer' to make anonymous tips - you could see if your area has anything similar?

Also, if you're worried about retaliation, I would not contact his family. I'd imagine he has little respect for his family if he's dealing something right outside his home.

@paytonpedro I had to have a fetal echo done (2 actually) because my dd is stubborn and she was never laying in a way that they could see her heart really well. My hospital doesn’t have a nicu so if there was any chance of there being anything wrong they would have wanted to deliver me at a bigger hospital. Everything was fine though. She was just a pain. Usually at the AS they can find out enough info about he heart without having to do an echo. At least in my case, that ultrasound was done by someone who only does echocardiograms and overseen by a cardiologist.
  • I have already had a panic attack and it is 7:56am I just so need to know everything is okay with baby and so want movement to start so I can have some reassurance! 10:00 can  you come faster please?!?!

  • Just spoke to the midwife and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 18 weeks. Really having a tough time processing. I feel like it's my fault because I got pregnant again without losing any of the weight I gained in my first pregnancy. I'm really struggling with this.
  • @zande2016 don't beat yourself up! so much easier said than done I know but so much of it doesnt even depend on weight :) there are some great ways to manage it without medications and even if you do it has so much to do with just how your body reacts to pregnancy :) you are not a failure and this isnt your fault

  • @flockofmoosen3 scary yeah I would definitely call the cops!

  • @zande2016 I had a skinny friend who got it.. it wasn't her fault and it's not yours either.. just happens sometimes. Don't beat yourself up
  • @flockofmoosen3 I would definitely call the cops! The kid doesn't sound like a high class or super savvy dealer since he's doing it in the middle of the day in a suburban cul-de-sac. I wouldn't worry about retaliation. But definitely tell them you'd like to remain anonymous. I also second talking to any close neighbors you have and trying to get them to place similar calls. If they get multiple reports they're more likely to take it seriously. Do you have a neighborhood watch group? If so, I'd involve them, too. (Do those exist IRL or is that just a movie thing haha)

  • @zande2016 I'm sorry you're having a hard time!  I have had GD 4 times and I am not overweight so please don't blame yourself or your weight.  It's just how your placenta and your body is processing insulin and you can't help that you have GD.  I know it's hard to accept at first as I dealt with the same thing with my first baby.  The bonus is that the diet helped keep the extra weight off and I was back to less than my pre-pregnancy weight soon after birth!  I think the hardest thing about GD is planning your meals and snacks so if you need suggestions feel free to message me!

  • What @Sarafuss said! I have plenty of women with GD in my yoga class and most of them are not overweight. When do you normally get tested? I'm a FTM. I think doc said 25 weeks but I'm not sure now with all the information I was given!

Thank you for the support @lindsayleigh1989 @moguippy @Sarafuss @kissableviv. I think what is weighing on me so hard is trying to understand why I did not have it in my first pregnancy but have it this time. The big difference is I started this pre-pregnancy about 25 pounds heavier than my first, so that is automatically where my mind went. I am also paranoid I was already prediabetic pregnancy and did not know it, since I am only 18 weeks, but I know there is no way for me to know that. I will feel better once I start focusing on the diet and everything, but right now I am trying to accept it.

@Sarafuss did you have to be induced early with your other pregnancies? that is part of what I'm worried about - I want so badly to go into labor on my own and have an intervention free birth at a freestanding birth center.

@kissableviv they tested me early because I am at higher risk for it with PCOS - since insulin resistance goes hand in hand with PCOS. Normally they test you at 24-28 weeks.
  • @babygagnon2018 personally I wouldn't switch at this point in your pregnancy. If you are up front, they probably will pass if there is another candidate that seems to be a good fit. No one wants to hire and train a new employee just to have them leave for 6+ weeks (or longer if you end up on bedrest or something)

Also if you do NOT disclose it, your new coworkers may resent you :p this happened to us at my last job. They hired a woman who hid the fact she was 6 months pregnant. She told everyone about 2 weeks after she was hired. So basically we had to train her, cover for her during her leave, then retrain her 2 months later.

My example was from a very small, fast paced office though, and she was hired to be a dispatcher...

@zande2016 that skinny friend that got GD?  She didn't have it with her first, but did with her second.  Unfortunately it just happens sometimes.  She went into labor naturally (she actually went for her 38w check up and her OB had to tell her she was in labor. Also, her first (non GD) was a few days early too, so the GD didn't make her early).  Her first pregnancy she had a much more difficult birth than with her second.  She chose to give birth in a hospital and get an epidural but I don't think she had to get anything else. Obviously everyone is different and this may not apply to you, but it was possible for someone, so it could be for you?

Also, I too have insulin resistant PCOS and was prediabetic for a short time last summer. I have been on metformin since last summer and am still taking it.  My OB said something about doing an early GD test but I think she forgot. I check my sugar every morning and it is good... I'm wondering if I should remind her about the early GD testing or just wait...

Edited to add word I forgot
  • I am on Metformin as well @moguippy, I thought maybe it would have helped prevent GD but I guess not. I think if you've been testing and levels have been good you should be okay to wait a few more weeks. Thank you for the reassurance, I know anything can happen but I'm a worrier by nature.
  • @MrsMiller8588 has a great point about the 1 year of employment.  That's a requirement for our leaves, including FMLA and medical I believe.

Has anyone else every been diagnosed with a hernia while pregnant?  @wildtot - didnt' you mention that your belly button never went back to normal?  I brought it up and some pain around my belly button at my appointment yesterday.  She pressed on it and had me cough and thinks I have a small hernia there.  She explained how the diastasis muscles work, but I was shocked enough not to ask questions about whether it will require surgery later, etc.  All she really said about it and my soreness was "it's just going to get worse!"  Ack!
