Has anyone has any experience in the past with having their anatomy ultrasound at exactly 20 weeks pregnant and not being "far enough along" for the tech to see what they need to see (heart chambers, etc.)?
@foxbaby2016 Your doctor changed your appointment right? Did you not have a dating u/s done earlier in your pregnancy? That’s maybe the only excuse I could think of for your doctor to push it back just to be safe so they won’t have to do a repeat u/s. Or maybe they have older equipment? Otherwise it sounds more like they screwed up the schedule and are just covering their ass
@foxbaby2016 by 20 weeks everything is completely formed I’m pretty sure and baby is just getting bigger. I agree with @acunamatada, I think they’re just covering their butts.
@foxbaby2016 I agree with the other ladies, and sorry I don't have any advice. I just had mine done at 17+6 and they saw everything they needed to. Granted babies grow at different paces, I don't think it has to be RIGHT at 20 weeks or later. If it bothers you, you should bring it up to them. (I don't know what help that'll be since they're making excuses now.) Good luck!
It's been a rocky past week+. I had a regular appointment with my OB over a week ago. Quick blood pressure check, listened to the heartbeat, everything was great. The appointment was over I was at the reception desk scheduling my next appointment when the doctor came out and pulled me back in. Shit.
He said that he reviewed my blood work that's done in conjunction with the NT scan and my results, while technically screened negative were surprisingly higher than expected. I was shocked. I got the results back from my NIPT weeks ago and everything was low risk, the NT ultrasound looked great. I was NOT expecting a problem. Plus, I was getting the news 3 weeks after the results came in. I was shocked, scared, pissed.
My OB said he'd get in touch with the perinatologist that reviews all the ultrasounds and deals with any high risk issues to see if this warrants further tests. He tried to be reassuring but it wasn't helping. They both told me to wait and see what the second trimester blood work looked like.
The next morning I went to do the second tri bloods. I was a nervous wreck. I was sure that after a week of waiting for those results it would be bad again and I'd be back to getting amnio at close to 18 weeks. I met with the perinatologist later that day, did a thorough ultrasound with him and everything looked good. I also had a lengthy discussion about the NIPT with him, he's not a HUGE fan of the test.
I needed answers and told him to just do the amnio. I was scared of the miscarriage stats which the doctor said were incredibly dated and far from accurate. He assured me that he has performed over 9,000 amnios and has had ZERO resulting in a loss due to the procedure. We did the amnio. It went well.
The waiting for everything was HARD. I checked out of everything pregnancy related so I didn't drive myself crazy. I spent my days hoping for the best, praying for a good outcome and fearing what I'd do if at this point we got bad news.
5 days later the second trimester blood results came in, super low risk. 3 days after that the amnio results came in. Everything is great, no chromosome issues at all. Also it looks like the blood work that came back higher risk was due to incorrect dating. At my 8 week ultrasound they incorrectly pushed my due date back by almost a week. While it got corrected by 12 weeks the blood screening used the old date, making the hormone levels off.
In the end this ended up to be a ton of fuss and anxiety over nothing but holy crap I learned so much about the NIPT, amnio and what feels like all things pregnancy screening.
Sorry for this lengthy post. It's good to be back.
@foxbaby2016 It depends on how much detail your OB or ultrasonographer is trying to see. Although most parts they are analyzing are formed at 20 weeks, they may not be large enough to examine in detail as baby is just too small still. I had my anatomy scan at 16+3, will have another one this week at 20+3, then a fetal echo at 24+3. I am high risk so I'll have tons of US and additional monitoring but I wouldn't be concerned at this point but just having the AS a little later
@foxbaby2016 I wouldn't be concerned. My lab told me they like to do anatomy scans closer to 20w rather than sooner and I tend to prefer it that way because I'd like to just go once, hehe. I agree that if you didn't have a dating ultrasound maybe they are trying to account for a few more days just in case. Did you have the appointment and were told that? Or did they just schedule you past 20w? Sorry I may not have understood what's happening, I still need my coffee
@runsomewhere I'm so sorry you had to go through this! I was thinking about you and I'm glad to have you back! I can only imagine what a rollercoaster of emotions this was. I'm glad you got the amnio done right away; I had to wait 3 weeks for the combined screening results, and like you I thought I was in the clear since we also had the NIPT. Everything came back negative, but still, like you said this is definitely a learning experience. I think you did the right thing in checking out during this ordeal. I would have done the same, but I'm glad to have you back!
@runsomewhere That must have been so scary, so happy everything worked out!!!
Thanks ladies! Yes, they called and tried to move my ultrasound to later in the m@runsomewhere February stating that I wasn't far enough along yet (20 weeks) to see all of the chambers in the baby's heart. The only time they would offer me in the month of February is a time that doesn't work for me due to work obligations. I called again this morning and they wouldn't work with me to find a new date/time that suits all so I asked to be put back in my old appt time (tomorrow)...they said I would likely have to pay for another ultrasound if I did that (because I'm "too early" at 20 weeks) but otherwise I'll have to wait until the end of March for an appt that works for my schedule. Sorry, I'm taking my chances and going tomorrow. I agree with you ladies...I feel like they made a mistake and made up a story to try to fix their schedule. I had a dating ultrasound and it synced up perfectly with my missed period. @kissableviv@acunamatada@TalesOfASocialIntrovert@hillbillywife@gspmom21
@foxbaby2016 chances are that you will go to the appointment and you will be far enough along and they will be able to see everything they need to see. How strange of them to pull this on you. I agree that someone screwed up with scheduling or something.
@runsomewhere gosh! I hate the whirlwind of emotions you've had to go through but I'm glad that nothing is wrong and very happy you're back in the group!!
I have a cold AGAIN. In December I got one and was sick for three weeks. Stupid winter. I'm in the South so we're closed tomorrow for Mardi Gras, I'm definitely not complaining!
@foxbaby2016 that’s bizarre they’re pushing so hard saying that they won’t see the heart. My doctor said I could get mine anywhere from 18 weeks +. I went at exactly 19 weeks and they saw everything they needed.
@foxbaby2016 Yep! I work at a bank, but most businesses down here close. We aren't closed for President's Day, but I figure it's a fair trade. The school's (including universities) are closed for the week are as well. It's pretty nice!
@foxbaby2016 just asking but is it for the anatomy scan? I have mine scheduled for 21 weeks and then a fetal echo scheduled for 24 weeks, where they will specifically look at the heart and chanbers, valves and things. It sounds like someone has something wrong at that office.

So excited! We officially booked the Babymoon to Hawaii last night. Ended up being a good thing that we waited since the price went down around $200 for the trip (enough to cover resort fee when we get there). Any pregnancy veterans have advice on how to survive the plane trip?
@foxbaby2016 glad you stuck to your guns and are taking the appt tomorrow.
Follow up: I was going to say its ridiculous they are making you wait because my midwife thought they'd want to do my fetal echo at the same time (I'll be 19 weeks 2 days) and that is a much more detailed look at the heart. Now I'm wondering since two other people @busymommy23@TalesOfASocialIntrovert are having their fetal echo at 24 if they will be waiting. They haven't scheduled it yet but was curious what window they told you guys was appropriate? I'd rather not do it on the same day honestly I'd be there forever! lol
Also @runsomewhere what a nervewracking thing to go through! Glad it is all sorted out and things are ok!
I have gotten so much done today, and I am feeling really positive and gung-ho about life in general (yay!). That's good considering the day could have started out better-last night I forgot to put a diaper on DS and he sh*t the bed! Woke up at 6am. Totally my fault. And of course the first time he has pooped over night in like, two weeks, lol. Oh well. I def remembered the diaper for nap time!
OOOOO other random. My bagels turned out boss yesterday and the bread I think I screwed up by putting in extra yeast is currently in the oven (it rises for a combined 20 hours!) and smells amazeballs. I'll know in an hour after it rests if its any good!
STM's or FTM's (to be) has anyone switched jobs during their pregnancy? If so, were you upfront about your pregnancy/potential leave?
I know its illegal for them to discriminate or not hire you because you're pregnant.
I'm just strongly debating leaving my current job but want to be upfront about the pregnancy but don't want it to negatively effect my chances (they can use anything as an excuse not to hire lol so tough to prove you didn't get hired BECAUSE you were pregnant)
@babygagnon2018 you could always wait to disclose it until after they offer you the position, that way you’re giving notice but also protecting yourself from any potential (and illegal) discrimination.
@acunamatada thanks, that's definitely an idea. I just don't want them thinking I'm being shady and not telling upfront. But I guess its my personal business
@babygagnon2018 my SIL interviewed for a job while obviously pregnant. she didn't get it and they hired someone else. A few months later, they called her up bc the person they hired didn't work out, and my SIL had already had the baby and they really wanted to hire her... so I can't say that they discriminated against her the first time... but they did. It sucks but it happens and there's nothing you can do. I would also watch out for leave, sometimes you need to work at a place for a full year to get better leave benefits (or qualify for them at all). Hope it works out for you!
@babygagnon2018 i switched positions early on this pregnancy and told my boss after i accept the position. I only did that because i was dealing with doctor appointments and emotional viability concerns. I would hold off till offered.
@SmashJam I am having my fetal echo a few days before 22w so you might be ok? I’d still check though there was definitely a specific range of weeks they said it had to take place during
