Re: The Baby Name Thread

  • Pronunciation help requested! Lyra is our top girls name but I’ve recently realized the way we love to pronounce is different than the most common way. We love leer-ah but most say lie-rah. Thoughts? :/

    When I read it, I said "lie-rah".
  • I would have pronounced it “lie-rah” as well...not sure if that bothers you. I tried to think of a more obvious spelling for your pronunciation, but I honestly can’t think of one. I don’t think “Lira” is any more likely to get pronounced that way and “Leera” seems odd...
  • I read it as Lie-rah, but I think Lira will get pronounced with the short i, like old Italian money.

I read it as Leer-ah. That's really the only way I've ever heard that name pronounced in real life

     DD born Oct 2011 - DS#1 born Jan 2014 - DS#2 born Apr 2015 - DS#3 born Sept 2016 - LO#5 due Feb 7, 2018

  • I also read it as Leer-ah.
  • Husband has a double middle name and he hates it because it never fits on any government forms. Just a thought.
I was wondering about this. So you do list both middle names on those forms?? DH and I both have one middle but this new baby will have two.
jlcrunchberry - All of my kids have two middle names. I've never had problems filling out forms. Most ask for middle initial.

    Pronunciation is lie-rah.
  • I read it as Leer-ah too. I think it will be a toss up, what people say.

You can always just plan to correct people when you meet them if they mispronounce it. I don't think another spelling would look right. There are plenty of people I've met that have their names pronounced differently from what I expected. And then there are plenty of people with more common names (including myself) that still get their names mispronounced. You just have to decide if that will bother you or not.

I think it would be pronounced differently regionally.  I see it as lyr-ah

So we are team green here and have a girls name picked (for now) but our boys list is too long! I was wondering people's opinions on the long form of John. Jonathan? Johnathan? Can I use John as the short form for Jonathan? I don't want the short form to be Jon. Any help!
BIL is Jonathan  ( jon) and it drives me nuts. I prefer Johnathan

I definitely pronounce Lyra as lie-rah. This seems to be the standard pronunciation and I remember it from The Golden Compass books and movie. The protagonist's name is Lyra. Very pretty name.

What ^ she said. Also, slightly off topic, but I love those books and Phillip Pullman just came out with a new one - Book of Dust. Enjoyable.
  • I'm pronouncing it as Lee-rah.
  • Yes I know what the standard pronunciation is at this point. Just deciding if we want to deviate from it :/ thank you all for your thoughts

@clc515 - My older two read the series a couple years ago. My 11 year old recently finished The Book of Dust. My 13 year old plans to read it after she finishes the LOTR books.

Since you asked, do you want her to be constantly correcting people? My cousin I sent Jena (which is 100% pronounced gee-nuh) but her mom says it’s pronounced like Jenna, she just didn’t like the proper spelling. She is forever correcting people.

PP spoke of a niece or cousin with a spelling for her pronunciation you prefer. Maybe you two can add it to your list.
  • Need help on boy names: team green
    William
    Tyson
    Max

My husband likes Ty, but I think it’s too nicknamed. Last name ends in a double -er sound, so Tyler is out, but Tyson makes me think of Mike and chicken. Trying to get over that...my two favorites (that hubby hasn’t vetoed already) are William and Max, but my (non pregnant) sister (who also never wants to have children) has “claimed” this one and I’m unsure if I really want to stir up family drama. My mom and other sister agree that she’s ridiculous, but she is the kind to take this shit to her grave. So I’m trying to love a different name.  Thoughts and suggestions?

also - middle name is probably going to be Wayne (family name)

Eta: sorry narcissistic moment! Read through your post but misinterpreted i guess. I vote for William.

It’s Biblical, so not sure if that’s your cup of tea or not, but Titus can NN Ty.
  • @Jessilee15 Can you talk to your sister about having claimed a name she will likely never use so you can use it? Because that's a little nuts. But I like all three names with Wayne. I wouldn't associate Tyson with Mike or chicken, and didn't until you pointed it out. I knew a Tyson in middle school.

  • @jessilee15 I thought Mike Tyson as well, but I don't know anyone with the first name Tyson.  I like William and Max both... My little guy is going to be a Max!
  • jessilee15 - I'm partial to William. I have a thing for classic names, and wouldn't give two shits if a relative "reserved" it for a nonexistent baby that may or may not happen.

  • I like William
I wanted to call DS Liam with William as his full name but we already had a Liam on my husbands side.
The first thing I thought of with Tyson was mike

@jessilee15 I also like Max. Would you want to name him Maximus or Maxwell and call him Max or just Max. My cousin has a son and his legal name is Max but when she's yelling at him for doing something wrong, she refers to him as Maximus cause it's more formal for angry yelling?  :D

I also like William. It's a strong and classic name. If you wanted him to have a nickname, you have plenty of options with this one. Will, Liam etc.

and I agree with you about Ty but I'm very partial to the long name with a nickname thing.

Good luck choosing one but you have some good options here!

I would pronounce it like hailey...but I could be wrong
  • @TattoosandLace I would say it 'hay-lee'

I would say Ha-lee because the “i” is not there to stress the “a”

    Like Halle Berry?
I could see it that way too.
  • How would you pronounce Haley?

Ugh, stuck in the box. Our niece is Haley, and I've only every heard that spelling pronounced "hay-lee"  (rhymes with Kaylee/Kayleigh, not "Ha-lee", like Halle Berry). :)
  • How would you pronounce Haley?
    Hay-lee.

I'd only think to pronounce like Halle berry or Halley's comet if there were 2 Ls in it.
  • See. I’ve only ever heard it pronounced hay-lee. Apparently the two people we’ve told (via text) the name are confused if we are going with Halle. But there’s not two Ls.
