Re: The Baby Name Thread

  • @mamaof5already Congrats on choosing a name! I love the name Beau!
  • Loading the player...
  • We have a name! Last night we decided to use Beau!  apparently i am the only one that has an issue with 3 kids names starting with B, or that it ryhmes with one of our other kids  Jo. Even Jo doesn't care.

For some reason what the babies name was going to be came up as we were tucking everyones in to bed and kids started voting from their rooms.  (We had told them before it wasn't going to be a democratic process,  that we were choosing). 4 or of 5 kids choose Beau, and my husband said he preferred it over his initial pick now.  So we shook on it lol, and or little bit has a name!

The other contender was Rhett if anyone is curious.
If you had just one child already and her name was Jo, giving you only Beau and Jo, that might be weird. But with three others I don't think anyone will bat an eye. I love Rhett, but there's no way H would agree to it.
Jo is actually a 12 year old boy.  It's officially Joseph,  but everyone calls him Jo or JoJo.  Ironically our closest neighbor is also a Joe,  it's confusing sometimes, but one is like 70 and the other is 12.

  • It's between Theodore Westley Corgiat (family surname) and Theodore Edward Corgiat. I'll call him Teddy. H prefers Theo. Everyone seems to love our choices, but it's no surprise given the other kids' names. MIL is usually pretty particular about names, but really loves Theodore/Teddy. My mom adores it, but she's known I've been saving it for over six years now.
Theodore Is awesome! All the potential future nicknames are good too.
  • I've got a Google sheet wth about 35 girl names on it.  This is what I do when I can't sleep at night ever since DH vetoed my #1 name: Audrey.  Older DD's name is Leah.  Here are the names I'm liking most at this moment:

    Adelia or Delia
    Sylvia
    Mara
Thalia or Talia (both pronounced the same)
    Maya

Ending in an "a" sound is obviously my style.

We almost went with Talia (it would have been the nick name for us though with the name Natalia). I like names ending in an a sound, too for girls. I love Mara, but my husband would never go for that one. Great list, at least in my opinion.

Maya was out girl name, too. I love that name. I have a few friends with daughters named Talia or that would have been on the list, too

  • Here's a rando question. I like the names Mya and Myra (family name). DH's HS girlfriend of 4 years is a Mia and unfortunately she is still around from time to time when we gather with old friends. Is this weird or reminiscent at all? I feel like if I'm asking then it may be, ugh.

My my name also starts with M!

I personally wouldn't be okay with a name close to any significant ex's name (mine or his.)  If it doesn't bother you or DH and you like the name, go for it.

For a moment I thought about a name that was very similar to DHs ex's name and I asked myself, would she pop into my head occasionally because of it? And the answer was yes so I steered clear.  The other question is whether it would remind your Husband of her too.

I think Myra is different enough from Mia if you like it,  and especially if its a family name with significance.  How does your dh feel?  We actually threw or a whole bunch of names we liked because we knew someone with them. But have a Joseph,  and their are 9 million Joseph's around because it is apparently a family name in most families, just like it is in ours.

  • @mblomq2 I hate having these ridiculous reasons for having to throw out a perfectly good name, but alas, they exist. My first choice boy name is Domenico (I'm trying to preserve my Italian-ness in the face of H's overwhelming Irish-ness), but H's best friend is named Dominic. He says "Do you want our kid to be a serial cheater like Dom?" Yeah, because all Dominics cheat like his idiot friend! So no Domenico for me.

I think Myra is different enough. My first thought is would she think your H named the kid after her because he still carries a torch? Is she that kind of ex?

  • We have a list, but I don't think we're going to commit to anything until the baby is born. Anyone else doing this? All my friends think I'm crazy, but I didn't realize this was going to cause such a stir. Ha.
  • Thanks for you thoughts!
  • @sre789 We have a long list of names too and cannot seem to come up with just one boy and one girl name (team green).
I don't think we will wait until the baby is here to decide but we won't tell anyone until after the baby gets here!

I want to wait to see what fits him when he's born, but H is adamant we have a name ahead of time. We'll see what happens :)

  • @mblomq2 I think Myra is pretty and it really is a completely different name from Mia. I don't think of them as the same or any version of each other. But if it makes you uncomfortable probably don't pick it.

@Ashoes123 That is funny, we have a google sheet too and about 15 names under each sex, plus separate lists of middle names for name we like but don't want to use as a first name. Sylvia is on my list too. I really like that.

We are finding out the sex (hopefully) at the a/s the 16th, but we are keeping it a secret between the two of us and not telling everyone else until after birth. Just for something special for us. I think we'll be able to narrow it down better once we can focus on one sex, but so far these are the top of the lists:

    boys:
    Griffin, Cooper, Eames, Odin, Sterling

    Girls:
    Anja, Tyler, Colette, Sterling, Cooper

DH still likes Copper for both and I used to but now I think I've heard it a few times too many and I think I'd get tired of it. Our last name is Smith so we are trying really hard to use something less common, but still a real name and not misspelled of course.

  • @alice0218 love the shared Google sheet, i set it up thinking DH and I would both put our favorite names then decide later however it ended up being me spend Hours upon hours scouring the interwebs for names the DH spending 5 minutes going in to veto his least favorites (RIP Audrey).

Cool list of unique names you've got there. For a boy I like Griffin and Eames. For girls I like Tyler the best
  • @alice0218 for your boys I like Griffin and Cooper but think Griffin goes best with your last name. I don't looked the alliteration of Sterling with your last name.

For your girls I like Anja but I am doing over Collette, I LOVE that

Thank you ladies for the feedback!  :) I’m glad I asked. We both have starred different names and these are the starred ones. Griffin and Anja are the only ones I think we both starred so that is where we’re currently leaning even if they’re  not either of our I standout favorites. I will definitely take your feedback into consideration. Actually, I don’t think I have standout favorites so this definitely helps!
  • Collette and Griffin are such nice names! Some of the others are good ones too but I agree that cooper (and Tyler) are very common if you're trying to spice it up w the Smith last name.
  • What do y'all think about double middle names?? Yay? Nay? Traditional? Pretentious? Doesn't matter much bc who honestly often uses their middle name?

@mblomq2 - All of my kids have two middle names. When I changed my name I added a second middle as well. It all started when choosing names for my first we were dead set on having at least one family name. But I really loved both options and couldn't decide between the two so we chose both. We continued that tradition.

I'm not sure what makes it pretentious. It's just adding a second middle.

Don't think it's pretentious - it's traditional for my fam. My brothers and I grew up with 2 middle names, the American version and our mom's maiden name. Since no one ever addressed us by middle names, never really thought much about it. I did drop my american middle name when I got married and now my maiden name is my official middle name :)

My DS has 2 middle names and This baby will too! Neither of my parents have two middle names but myself and each of my siblings all have two middle names! I love having two!
My one sister gave 2 middle names to my nephew and my other sisters 3 kids all only have 1 middle name.
Totally your choice! If you want two middle names then do it! Your baby your choice!

I don't think it's a big deal,  kind of like 2 first names  in the south.  My youngest dd has 2 middles after her 2 grandma's  it's  Ann Marie.

I think it doesn't matter because people don't use their middle name(s). It can be a nice way to pass down mom's maiden name to keep that in the family instead of hyphenating the last name, or sometimes it's a regional/cultural thing. Or, in the case of my best friend, a compromise because neither mom nor dad was willing to let go of the name they wanted lol.

  • I kind of don’t get why you need two middle names, unless it’s trying
to not offend family. But it’s not a big deal because you don’t use middles at all for much, usually just middle initial at most.
  • We used 2 middle names for my son I loved Finn but my husband would not get on board so we compromised and made it the middle name. His second mn is my dad’s name. very few people know he has 2 min so I don’t think it is a big deal.
