Re: Big Dumb Questions Thread

  • I'm not really sure what position this baby is in but she was head down at the anatomy scan (while DD1 who stayed breech until the end was breech at her AS so I'm being hopeful). With DD1, the midwife was able to tell that she was most likely breech by feel at 35 weeks. She sent me off for an US at the OBs office next door and it was confirmed. She gave me a referral for a chiropractor that specializes in the Webster technique, gave me a paper with tips (positions, playing music by pubic bone to get baby to turn), and had me make an appointment for an ECV consult with an MFM office. And said most likely the baby will turn but to try everything I can in the meantime. My water ended up breaking and the cord prolapsed (which while still rare, is more common with breech babies), the night before my ECV consult appointment at 37 weeks on the dot. So yeah that was that.
Had a c section and don't regret it. But I am hoping this baby will be more cooperative and I'll get my chance at a VBAC.
BFP May 2013 - MMC at 8 weeks
BFP September 2013 - MMC at 12 weeks
    BFP February 2014 - early loss/CP at 4.5 weeks
BFP May 2014 - MMC/ complete molar pregnancy at 11 weeks
    BFP December 2015 - DD born 8/18/2015
    BFP November 2016 - pending...

  • Ditto what everyone is saying about the babies still having lots space (relatively) to swim around and not being settled until the mid-30s weeks. Also remember that they are flexible enough that they might have their feet up by their head. My prenatal class talked this week about belly mapping to get a hint about position - - I think the handouts were from Spinning Babies, but I'm not finding them online. Regardless, Google "belly mapping" and you'll find plenty of tutorials to help.

  • I've had at least 10 ultrasounds in the last 2 months due to being high risk.  Every single time the baby is folded in half with its feet up by its head  :D Sometimes it is head down, sometimes it is head up.  I don't think I've ever felt any movement above my belly button yet.  Certainly nothing near my ribs.  It's always super low and usually on the left side.

  • @SpongeWorthy that is a favorite position of my girl too. I think her feet are high up in my rib cage area. I see movement from right under my bra to my belly button, always on my right side.
  • @kerils - you jinxed me! Or rather I jinxed myself. I read your comment about your baby being in your ribs today and was thankful my baby hasn't done that yet. Well guess what's been happening all day? Yep. Baby is playing under my ribs. I'm assuming feet bc I don't feel a head either.
  • @ginger1228 I'm sorry! My baby has actually stayed out of my ribs for the first time today. If it makes you feel better, I have gotten used to it so even though he's getting bigger I feel less uncomfortable. If that makes sense

  • @Kerils - you're forgiven ;)
It didn't really hurt. Just mainly uncomfortable and like baby is all squished up in there. It's just a weird feeling - I think mostly bc this week is the first time I've really been able to tell where baby is. Pregnancy is so weird and cool all at the same time.
  • Well I had my last 3d ultrasound tonight, and the little stinker is definitely still breech at 32 weeks  :s The tech told me that if he does flip at this point, there would be no mistaking the feeling!

  • @GlitterFish oh no! Are yo seeing a chiropractor? Maybe that would help? Also I know that you are a few weeks ahead of me but I can't believe you are at the 32 week mark. Where did time go?

I've been seeing a chiropractor weekly since 21 weeks  :(

  • @BusyZee Sounds like you've already gotten good advice but I go off of what the movements feels like.  Large jabs are probably feet, small flutters are probably hands/arms, and hiccups are probably felt where the chest is positioned.  So... if I'm mostly feeling the big feet movements above my belly button and small flutters super low at the same time, then we are mostly likely head down.  This is all a guess though and like other people have said, plenty of time to flip back and forth multiple times before July!

I think you are team anterior placenta, right?  So, it might be harder to tell the difference between big and small jabs?

@GlitterFish I had mentioned this a while ago but last time, I literally saw DD flip from breech to head down.  I had only been feeling kicks really low and one night this small round blob poked out of my stomach just above my belly button and slowly dragged all the way down to my pelvis.  It was about the size of an adult fist so I'm pretty sure it was her head.  I felt a ton of other movement while it was happening and from then on, all of the big kicks were way higher.  Totally the weirdest thing.  Hope you have a fun alien flipping moment soon!

  • @GlitterFish DS didn't flip head down until somewhere after 33 weeks and I definitely didn't feel it.  I mean I'm sure that whenever it happened I felt movement but at no point did I think "wow baby just flipped".  I'm sure most women would know but  he made crazy movements all the time so whenever it happened I didn't recognize it.  Don't get worried if you don't distinctly feel the flip, it could still happen!  Baby still has lots of time.

@OperaSingerMommy that makes sense and  that gives me some idea!  I'm getting jabs  (that visibly shake my belly) mostly higher up and small flutters like bubbles in my lower left side most of the time. Yeap you remember right .. anterior placenta! I still do feel a lot of movement and I wonder how much more the rest of those who don't have an anterior placenta must feel!
  • @GlitterFish you've likely heard this already, but I've heard that acupuncture (someone that works with pregnant women) can help closer to delivery to turn baby - you still have time though!  Also, there are daily poses that you can do to try to encourage baby into position if you are into prenatal yoga and the like.  Try not to worry yet though :)

Oh you can definitely feel it. DD was sideways for 2 weeks and finally flipped at 34 weeks. DS flipped at 36 and it hurt.
  • A friend of mine went to a specialist who flips babies. He puts a lot of pressure with his hands, it hurts a lot but the baby flipped. At the end, she got stuck at 3cm for a 3 days and needed pitocin, after which she delivered within 20 minutes vaginally. This is an anecdote, obviously, but just sharing one experience.

  • Sorry to resurrect an older thread, but I felt it fit better here than the newer ones...

We will be doing newborn photos when baby is ~10 days old.  DH and I will be in some of the pics and I'm trying to pre-plan outfits.  I'll still be in maternity clothes, right?  Like, not 9th month clothes, but 2nd trimester size-ish?
  • @optbaby2017 it's is so hard to say. I've seen some women snap back really quickly, and others take much longer. I think your best bet would be something flowy. You will most likely have big new milk boobs and most definitely a 'fluffy' tummy regardless of how flat it is! Maybe try to have a few options just to see what you will be comfortable in?

How fun to have a newborn session! I didn't do one with DS and regret it. Thinking I'll do one this time around with this LO and DS since I can't seem to get DH on board with it.

Anyone have pyelactasis? Had a growth ultrasound at 33 weeks and they ended up finding a small puddle of urine in his right kidney.... Anyone else have this happen? I have to get another ultrasound in 2 weeks to see if it grows bigger, which could become a problem. The Dr says that is very rare for that to happen though. Anyone else going through This? I googled of course lol and it usually goes away but most people had it found at their 20 week scan. My baby didn't have it then... Not sure if I should worry or not. I mean I'm worried but not sure how much I should worry :s
  • @optbaby2017 definitely depends on the woman. Some will be in their pre-pregnancy clothes by then and some will still be in their late pregnancy clothes. And yes to potentially ginormous boobs! I agree that something flowy would probably be ideal.

@sdang1 no experience, but wishing you and baby all the best
  • @sdang1 My baby had mildly enlarged kidneys (potential hydronephrosis) at the 20wk scan. One stayed the same size and one shrunk when they checked again at 32wks, so we are able to skip extra prenatal tests for it and will have the pediatrician check later. I think there was a thread ~February/March where a few other mamas mentioned similar findings. It sucks to worry that something is wrong, but my doc and my research both said what you found - that it often resolves on its own or needs simple monitoring.

@optbaby2017 thanks for the encouraging words. What makes me a little nervous is that most had it discovered at their 20 week ultrasound and then when checked again before 34 weeks it was gone. Mine was just recently discovered at 33 weeks. (And I wasn't even supposed to technically have that ultrasound!) I guess I will find out in a week at my next ultrasound what will happen!
  • Hi! I am hoping I am adding a new dumb question. My belly is certainly moving down....I am at 35 weeks now......has anyone bought a belly support thing, and if so, what? It just sometimes on a hard chair feels like the belly is pushing into your legs.....and should I just let it be? It seemed like some people said this helped with lower back pain too---so opinions?
  • @optbaby2017 a good newborn photographer will hide mom's belly since many women are not feeling their best at 10 days postpartum. Many poses will have the baby covering your belly or will be taken at an angle that will flatter mom's changing body. Something flowy is always good, but also stick to neutrals (cream, white, tan, black) vs a bold color/print that will draw attention to you. You want the focus on that adorable LO!

  • @Katie______ I've been wearing support garments while sleeping since the beginning of my bump, partially because I got a bad skin rash. basically anything that keeps my tummy in place (could be a fitted t shirt even!) I got myself a belt from Jojo maman bebe because it was on sale. I find it hard to sit in but it's good for walking around. Over the belly maternity pants help me significantly too.

I got one of these. It helped with lower back pain, but since baby has moved lower into my pelvis it really doesn't help as much anymore. And it doesn't help with the issue while you're sitting. For me it's actually pretty uncomfortable when I'm sitting down. I only wear it if I'm going to be on my feet for a long time. The best option for me is just to wear a lot of maxi dresses/skirts so I can sit with my legs spread way out and let my belly hang. So glamorous...
This is the only thing I can figure out that helps with sitting.

  • @Katie______ There are also belly wrapping techniques that can be done with your wrap carrier or ring sling, so at least you wouldn't be buying an extra item, plus it helps break in a new wrap. Look them up on YouTube.
I'm not very good at it, and mostly I just use the manspread lol

  • @GlitterFish I love your wrap!! All the the colors suit your personality perfectly. I thought I remember you saying it was a ring sling style?? I've been considering one. There are just so many options it's hard to decide what to get.
  • @GlitterFish where'd you get that wrap? I love anything multi
  • @Poppyseed72017 @BusyZee This is the Hip Baby Ring Sling, and the price for this color recently went down to 29.95 on Amazon!

  • Thanks ladies!!!!   I felt like maybe it was just me, but yes the slightly spread legs.....but as baby gets more towards the pelvis (which I hear is about 35 weeeks), sitting just stinks. My husband laughs a little as he says I need to learn not to sit in certain ways.

@GlitterFish - I will have to try that with my moby wrap!  @BusyZee - good advice on the pants too.....I have some over the bellys, but with our move, I haven't found that box yet.  The carpet guys come tomorrow, so then I can finally unpack my closet vs. the core maternity clothes to find those pants ovet the belly style.

Thanks for not having me buy more stuff, but also just knowing it's not just me! :)   :)
  • We went to the high risk Dr last night for a second look at the head measurements and DH was really impressed with the guy. He thinks I
should switch providers and start seeing the high risk Dr for the rest of the pregnancy. He takes in regular patients as well and delivers at the same hospital. My current ob is a bit cryptic and we haven't been that happy with her. She's OK but kinda hard to get a straight answer or reach her in a timely manner.

But here's my question, isn't it a bit late? Like what's the point? I have 6 weeks left. Plus if they are on the same rotation, and she shows up to deliver, awkward! Right?

Everything is fine and I'm gonna go to a different gynecologist after this because I'm done having kids. (I was going to this awesome GYN but she doesn't do ob so I plan to return to her from now on)

  • @plumpous if you like the new guy better I'd switch. These last 6 weeks are the most important for being able to communicate and believe in your doctor IMO. For example, My OB is a solo practice and I don't even see hum until about 30 weeks. All the regular pregnancy checkups are with his CNPs and then in 3rd tri they start scheduling me to see the doctor because that's when it matters.

Dumb question, but I felt like all the big tests are done and from now it's smooth sailing, why is it that NOW is the most important time? Sorry for sounding silly, I guess there's stuff I am not aware of. This is baby #2, but I don't recall anything special happening this time around with my first. I'd love to learn more. TIA

There are just a lot of decisions being made about delivery that I would want to be on the same page as my doctor about.
  • @AdaByron thanks again. That's really helpful.

  • Ok I've seen on multiple different Birth Plan templates the option of using intercourse as a natural method of inducing. So what happens if someone chooses that? Are they really just like "well we already tried walking and nipple stimulation, so we'll just leave you alone for 15 mins to go ahead and have some sex and see if that moves things along"?
  • Lol, I'm pretty sure this part is usually done at home! Like at the VERY beginning...
Well that's what I would have assumed but it's on checklists of things that are meant to be templates to give to the midwives/doula! Why would they need to know if that was part of the plan?!
