Having a baby during a blizzard is one of those things I have on my worry about list. I am actually starting to think I want a list of days of the week and times that friends and neighbors are available to help with my other kids in case. My parents are like 30 minutes north of us, and 45 to the hospital and not good in an emergency. My inlaws are closer to us distance wise so I think they are in charge of me. My husband works 45 minutes away.
We live in an area of Ohio that has potential for mid Feb blizzards and polar temperatures. Brrr.
Married - 7/29/06 Ben and Maggie - 4/10/09 Mia - 6/16/11 Surprise! due 2/23/17
Yuck to snow storms. My #1 labor concern... please don't be mid-blizzard. I'm up in Northern Maine--so there's a good chance.
Yup, that could very well be the case for us too. We already have about 40 inches of snow everywhere here and we've been hit with freezing rain the last 2 days. My H and I were just saying how that would NOT be the day to go into labor. The road conditions were horrendous.
************* First BFP: 12/16/13 EDD: 08/23/14 Baby BOY born: 08/29/14
We get a decent amount of snow here and one of my fears was going into labor during a snow storm. We got lucky that the day DD came home it was over 60 degrees out, which is very unusual weather for this time of year.
+1 for being nervous about a blizzard baby. We live 50 mins from the hospital, my fiancé works 45 mins from the hospital, and if there's a blizzard I'm working from home anyway. And we live in the middle of nowhere where the roads aren't always plowed/treated right away. We're bound to get at least another 2 feet of snow between now and EDD.
DH accepted his job offer as a full time firefighter (pending training and cadet school). Which means army shit is on hold (yay!) But I'll basically be single momming it for 3.5 months when the baby is only a couple weeks old (boooo) during cadet school. To cope, I've decidedly tossed my former minimalistic self far far away and have been buying all the unnecessary baby gear imaginable. We have a crib, rock n play, pack n play, etc etc but of course I *needed* the halo bassinet. I've totally succombed to paying for convenience and don't really give a shit if it's superfluous.
Im normally an anxious nester, but currently in a phase where laundry has piled up, floors are dirty, I don't want to cook or get out of bed. I don't recognize myself!! I'm due in 3 weeks, I'm a mess
+1 to worried about snow! We don't get a lot but when H turned 30 we got 10" (mid february!) we either have nothing and it goes away in a day or TONS and people lose their damn minds.
Also, there was an article last week abt a woman giving birth in her car with her doula and H on the highway I have to travel to get to the hospital! Apparently they got stuck in traffic!
+1 for being worried about a freak snowstorm when I go into labor! I live in an area where we don't get much snow, but it's not unheard of to get a few inches a couple of times each winter. Plus, there is always a pretty big likelihood of freezing rain. We have already had a few "storms" this year (you people who live in actual snowy areas would laugh, we're talking, like, 2 inches of snow over a 24 hour period), and the city basically shuts down. H is really good at driving on crappy roads, but no one else in the city is. Last month, people were abandoning their cars on the freeway because of 3" of snow - though that was covered by a layer of ice.
It's been unusually cold here this winter so far, so it wouldn't be out of the ordinary to get a snowstorm or two next month... Hopefully we don't have to drive across town to the hospital in the middle of one!
On a separate note, I'm trying to convince H that we should fly up to Seattle on Saturday to go to the Seahawks/Lions wildcard game. There are tickets on Stubhub for $130 each (which is much cheaper than I expected), and we have Christmas money from my mom that she said we should use for "something fun"... And we can fly for free because H works for an airline, so really, it wouldn't cost THAT much to go. And it will be our last chance to go to a game for a while, with the baby on the way. It's only a 40-minute flight, and we could even fly back that night after the game. He seemed open to the idea, so hopefully we can pull off a last-minute adventure!
You're so good @madamerwin. I just declined a Pats ticket for next week. I just can't imagine the long walk from parking to game and back and all the ups and downs in my current state plus 1.5 weeks. It bums me out to say no and I'm very ashamed of myself.
@Xstatic3333 we've never been to an NFL game, let alone a Seahawks game, and H has REALLY been wanting to go... His work was giving away tickets today, and we didn't win, so I figured I'd look at tickets for sale. I was surprised they were so cheap (especially considering it's playoffs), and with the cash we have from parents for Christmas, I really feel like we should go and do something fun. If we go, we'll fly - and there is a tram that takes you straight to the stadium from the airport, so minimal walking involved. I'm sure the stairs in the stadium will suck, but I also know how much fun H would have finally seeing the Hawks play at CenturyLink Field.
I guess I should call my MW and get a note with my due date if we go, in case the airline questions how far along I am...
@yogadevil I don't think the Halo bassinet is superfluous at all - maybe if you were talking about the Snoo...
I had to google this, I've never heard of it. It is so pretty I started considering it until I scrolled down and saw the price! DAMN! ~$1200 is pretty steep.

It sounds like you'd be good! That's a much easier situation than we have at Gillette. No trams of any sort for us, lol! Just long walks, usually in some sort of freezing rain. I'm also looking at being close to 37 weeks for my game, and you'll be 34. Very significant difference in terms of odds of going into labor and all that!

Yeah, I won't be going ANYWHERE far from home at 37 weeks!
@madamerwin I say go for it!! You don't know the next time you can just fly somewhere and be the two of you. Totally a good investment to me!
On a gross note, put my credit card in my back pocket when buying lunch. Then dropped it in the toilet at work while pulling my pants up! So not only had I peed, it's a work toilet! A girl and I searched for like 30 minutes for something to try and fish it out with and no luck. Totally had to get it out. I washed my arm like 10 times and hand sanitized the shit out of it and I still want to cut it off. I need to go home!
@madamerwin I would totally go if I were you! Unfortunately, the Ravens did not make the playoffs this year, but the year that they won the Super Bowl, I went to our only home playoff game. The atmosphere of the playoff game was so much more intense (in a good way!) than a regular season game. Definitely worth sitting in the freezing cold in my opinion lol. Also, I'm not sure if you have been to the stadium in Seattle, but the fans are totally covered from any potential elements lol. I've been to the stadium (we used to go to one away game a season) and it's very nice!
ETA: I should have read the other posts first lol but since you've never been, it's definitely worth the experience! Also, I'm pretty sure the stadium has ramps and/or an elevator (most do) so you wouldn't have to take the steps unless you wanted to.
Yeah I should definitely clarify that my walking concern isn't within the stadium, but the fact that my friend with tickets parks close to a mile away from the stadium. Ups and downs I meant at our seats during the game itself. Standing/sitting transitions are currently pretty tough on the ole' pelvis for me. Sounds like neither of these would be a huge issue for you. Playoff games are definitely a blast so I hope it works out for you!
@SawyerRichardson I know right? I love the style of it, but basically if I was going to spend that kind of $$ I would just get a night nurse and call it a day.
+1 for blizzard freak out. There is a blizzard pretty much every year in nyc in jan or feb. and i was born during a tropical storm, so i have a feeling this will be my just desserts.
We don't have a car (NYC) so we train it cab/uber it everywhere. We are planning to uber it to hospital when the time comes. It's about a 20min drive w/ no traffic. Our blizzard plan is if there is one in the forecast we are just gonna stay at a hotel nearby the hospital. If baby come then we are just around the corner and can get there very easily. If not then we get a little staycation.

Also worried about having a blizzard baby here (Southern Maine)! @krob we have the same blizzard plan! If it's close to my due date and there is a blizzard in the forecast we'll be staying at a hotel since we live an hour away under normal road conditions.

@yogadevil I don't think the Halo is crazy at all. It was my selection when my husband pulled a "oh, I know you're 36 weeks now, but I'm only just now expressing doubts about the cradle we have for roomsharing". We got it and set it up a week ago, and I'm so happy with it.
The Snoo is just some crazy nonsense. (That I totally would buy if I could justify it).
Waiting for lab work sucks. Doctor and I suspect that I've developed Cholestasis during this pregnancy. I had it with my last pregnancy, but now symptoms are presenting thenself a good 5 weeks earlier than before, which sucks. I'm Hoping it's just a fluke and all is well. Fingers crossed!!
@Gretchypoo@concreteangell thanks! Doctor said we should have results today or tomorrow but I knew today would be a stretch. I keep telling my H not to stress, but I can't help but be anxious myself. Lol
@lct2008 since I'm only 32 weeks, my OB would send me to the high risk OB to put together a more detailed treatment plan, but their general protocol would be to monitor weekly, take a steroid for baby and then be induced at 36 weeks. If I had to deliver sometime before that, I would need to go to the hospital with the high risk OB an hour away, but if we make it to 36 weeks I could deliver at the hospital 10 minutes from our home. My concern is that our hospital does not have NICU, the nearest is the one that's an hour away.. so that will be a conversation with the high risk OB if we should just deliver there instead.
If if this does come back positive, It definitely changes our plans up but I'm just going to stay optimistic and handle it as we can!
@kirstynikole that is so frustrating and a little scary. I'm so impressed with your great attitude! i hope the test comes back negative but if it doesn't it sounds like you have a good team and most of a plan already in place. Keep us updated!
@poetryandoceans that's what kind of sold me on the Halo as well- fits better next to the bed and the swivel is so handy. It just seems overkill that we now have 4 different sleeping arrangements lol. But that increases the odds that baby will really take to at least one of them, heres hoping!
I want a doughnut now... But I found this awesome bakery from back home and they're shipping their paczki's!!! I was so happy when I saw that I immediately placed an order! For anyone who doesn't know what they are, it's a special Polish doughnut that's only made around Fat Tuesday and only in certain places. I'm from MI and we used to get them every year but I haven't had one since I moved to SC.
