  • I had so many solid names if it was a girl, but now that we know its a boy (I'm only 10 weeks but I did PGS/FET with IVF and we decided to find out the sex before the embryo transfer) we are finding it really hard to narrow down my list. We have a 1 syllable irish last name, and my husband's family is partially still living in Ireland. My family is italian and I dreamed of a beautiful italian first name for a girl, but there are no good Italian first names for boys that aren't already taken by close cousins.

So here's my list: Noah, Tobin, Walker, Luke/Luca, Teague, Sawyer, Slate, Storm, Kiel (middle name with most but not all would be Harrison).

I'm really like Storm. We both have very distant cousins (that we never see) called Storm that go by Stormy. Plus we live near the ocean. I don't know what middle name with that one though.
  • @Bluebird2318 I guess if we go with Arya, we'll just make sure not have the MN start with "N." Haha, but that's a good thing to point out! Do people frequently ask you if Dorian is a reference from the Oscar Wilde novel?
  • If it's a girl, we're thinking either Isabel Jane or Annabelle Jane (Jane is my mother's name and my middle name). If it's a boy, it'll be Judah Matthew (Matthew being my husband's name.) I can't wait to find out the sex! Eeeeek!

  • OK guys, I need honest opinions. Both DH and I really like the name Arya.

Yes, we were inspired by Game of Thrones. But I'm cool with naming a daughter that and remembering Arya Stark!

Would it do well out in the real world? Is it too weird of a spelling? There is the spelling Aria, but neither of us are really feeling that version. Also, it makes me think of Ariana Grande, and then I feel stabby. Which makes no real sense, since Aria and Ariana are two different names, but the heart wants what it wants.

There are two other girl names we both approve of, so if Arya gets shot down, I won't cry over it. But it's just unique enough that I wanted to test it out, for funsies.
Aria in all it's iterations is extremely popular right now so you're not going to get the unique you want.

I've only ever heard clo-ee as well. The accent would make a long a sound so the accent is unnecessary.

  • Our girl name is Ashley Jane (Jane is my mn) and for a boy it is Thomas Alan (Alan is MH's mn). Ashley Jane is the left over name from being TG last time. We wanted easy to spell, pronounce, nickname-able, and able to be located on a pencil or bike license plate. My name is none of those things and I'm a little salty.

I think with JJ, either make a good sibset.

  • I love this thread! We are thinking Penelope too for a girl! We have a Rosalynn (Rosie) and we thought a Penny or Poppy would go well. I also love Vivienne, but DH thinks it sounds like a prostitute's name. Thank you Pretty Woman! Grr

Boys names are are so much harder I think. I still like Jacob Michael (our boy name for DD), but I also like Theo and Bennett. We are team green again this time so we like to have two options for each before going into the delivery room. Problem is I can't remember my backup girl name for DD
  • @DrillSergeantCat It doesn't matter to me how unique or common Aria/Arya is. We just really like the name(s). I just wasn't sure how "out there" the spelling of Arya was, but it sounds like it might be becoming more common. In that case, the spelling really wouldn't be an issue, since people would see it more often and be able to pronounce the name.
  • @dubcompanion Arya/Aria is also one of the names we talked about - love it & love both spellings! (and the show haha)
@jenny0228 boys names are so hard, aren't they? I love Storm! When I read your list at first I was like that's an awesome name - could you pair Harrison with it? I like to think about the initials when I consider names so it might depend on your last name but I do love the Storm Harrison combo!

We're hoping to find out the sex in the next 2 weeks and then we'll narrow down choices. I have a much easier time coming up with girls names (which I'm set on if it's a girl I want her name to be Sierra) but DH and I never ever can agree on names (we didn't agree on our dog's name either, I just eventually caved to the name he picked out) so at least we have 6+ months to debate things! If we truly can't decide towards the end I might have to put a poll on here for you ladies to help us out haha :)

  • This is actually one of the first thing that had me recognize the few cultural differences I have with my husband (I was raised Catholic, he's Jewish).  Apparently, in some Jewish culture (any Jewish ladies feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), you don't name the baby after someone who is still alive.  In my family, that's considered an honor.  This took out a couple top choices, William & Daniel.

I really want all of the names to be family names.  Madelaine Parker for a girl, Benjamin Raymond for a boy.  Madelaine is my beloved late great aunt, Parker is a family name on my mom's side, Raymond is my late grandfather, whom I was very close with.  I'm a bit of a sap about my relatives who have passed and I love the idea of keeping them with us for another generation.
  • We have picked out Austin Keith (Keith is my grandfathers name and my fathers mn) and Samantha Rose (my grandmothers name was Rosie) We would call her Sami for short of course :)! We already have a Bentlee Michael
  • @serenity13 thank you! I think you may be right - at first I wasn't sure of Harrison with Storm but maybe they do compliment each other.. at least I have a long while to look at it and decide! It's so early, but at the same time I want to have some solid choices now so I can make sure that in 6 months I won't be sick of them! For example some names I loved before I was even pregnant now I can't bear to think of. Milo was one name I used to really like.

And Sierra is a beautiful name!
  • I have had my names picked out for a very long time! Thank God my hubby loves both of them!!! Ava Grace for a girl and Mason Joseph for a boy!
  • We have picked out Austin Keith (Keith is my grandfathers name and my fathers mn) and Samantha Rose (my grandmothers name was Rosie) We would call her Sami for short of course :)! We already have a Bentlee Michael

Not particularly often, but when they do I just tell them we hope he doesn't turn out anything like the character. ;)

  • Since we're living in Ireland right now, and the due date is around St. Patrick's day, we want to give it an Irish name, but let's face it, some Irish names are downright ODD... Example...
    • Siobhan (Sha-vaughn)
    • Tadgh (Tag)
    • Aisling (Ashling)
    • Roisin (Ro-sheen)
    • Naoise (Neesha)
    • Saoirse (Searsha)
    • Eoghan (Owen)
    • Niamh (Neave)
    • Grainne (Grahn-ya)
    • Cian (Kee-ahn)
    • Aoife (Eefa)
When we move back the states, if I gave our child one of those names, I feel like they'd be made fun of when the teacher couldn't pronounce their name. I could always go the traditional "Patrick" route if we had a boy, but then his initials would be PP. :(

Btw - if anyone is bored... pronunciations of Irish names here: https://www.bitesize.irish/blog/list-irish-girls-names/. I find it wildly entertaining.

  • @DrillSergeantCat I gotcha. I meant that it's unique and therefore wanted to run it past general opinions.

@Bluebird2318 The Oscar Wilde novel is perhaps less mainstream than GoT, but just watch! Coming soon to a theater near you..... with Tatum Channing (or other big lead actor)... ;)

  • @npaulie My brother's birthday is St. Patrick's Day, and his middle name is Sean. I find it cool that my mom went with the Irish spelling of that name. :)

Where I am Chloe is pronounced Clo-ee, just like that with no accents. The French version would be Chloée. Pronounced in French of course.
  • @npaulie Yowza! Those names would very much get butchered in the states, but I like that they're culturally different. I think the actress Saoirse Ronin has made the name recognizable. At least that was the only one I could pronounce! I remember the name Eoghan from that movie Leap Year with Amy Adams, and she called the bartender E-O-Ghan. He was like, it's Owen. I do love the Irish name Ailish for a girl. One of my favorite romance authors has a heroine in one of her books named Ailish O'Kelley.
  • @npaulie I love Irish names! I think depending on where you will move back to the states, will depend on how 'odd' people will find the names. I'm from Boston where many people are Irish and these names are familiar. My dad is from Ireland and I always loved the name Niamh, so I named my second daughter that. I was too afraid to name my first daughter that so I stuck to something a little more safe, Fiona. Now that I live in Illinois, many people have never heard of Niamh, but once I tell them they usually remember it! I think Gaelic names are beautiful, but totally agree the spelling is difficult for anyone who doesn't know Irish!
  • So I'm from the Czech Republic which is one of those countries that names have to be off the approved list or it's a no go. Which also includes no middle names allowed. So all you ladies are lucky for all your option and combination abilities. My first daughter is Katerina and for our second little girl we are thinking Karolina, Michaela or Kristyna. Karolina is my fav but MIL insisted it was to close to our first daughters name. Since I'm biased on her opinion I figured you ladies could chime in.

  • We've only thought about boy names since that's what DH wants. Since we're having two we've narrowed it down to William James and Theodore Graham (Get it, Teddy Graham?! LOL) Not sure if they'll stick but those are the only ones we agree on :)
  • @npaulie I LOVE LOVE LOVE Saoirse, but my husband has trouble spelling even "normal" names and was legitimately concerned that he would forever spell his own daughter's name wrong. We eventually decided Irish names just weren't going to work for us, despite my love of them AND a St. Patty's due date.

We're pretty much locked for a girl--Theodora Poppy (nn Thea), which I'm thrilled with. We're still struggling for a middle name for our boy option. Basically I want to use a name that starts with "P" as a nod to my last name (I kept my name, but the baby will have my husband's name). We think we're going to go with Dashiell for a boy, but P boy names that go with Dashiell are HARD. I've nixed Peter, Paul, Patrick, Pascal, Preston... about ready to just put random letters after P and call it a day. PABLE! PLIP! PORVU!

Anyone have any suggestions? I'd love and welcome some more brainpower on this one!

  • @mossn83 both names are beautiful but I agree they are pretty similar. It reminds me of what someone would name twins they want somewhat matchy names. I think Kristyna is also pretty similar too, I keep saying them together and I think it's more matchy than Katerina and Karolina. I do really like your choices though and don't think it should necessity deter you if you love the name.

Liking the flow of Dashiell Pierce best out of my suggestions, but it would also depend on your last name as well

My husband only wants boys and jokes around that he will ship off a girl or hire a body guard if we have one.  He isn't great at names but really was stuck on Christopher Patrick (after both our fathers) - (which I loved). We both told my older sister who was pregnant before me and named her son Christopher William. She swears she does not remember us telling her the name.  My husband was a little upset.

    For Boys, I like:

    Emmett Oliver
    Bennett Michael
    Luke Patrick

    For Girls, I like:

    Madeline or Madelyn Scarlett
    Evelyn Olivia
Arya Olivia (I also love GoTs)
    Devyn (not sure of MN)

That is really it for now - Husband doesnt like any of them and jokes that our child will be Lebron Bron..

  • All of those Irish names are beautiful @npaulie

@UnicornsPlease Haha! I also vote Plip! Seriously though, I love the name Dashiell! I recently met someone with that name and thought it was really cool. :)

  • @mossn83 I personally wouldn't name my kids that matchy-so id want michaela out of the ones you listed.  But if you absolutely love one of the others and don't care about getting comments about it over the years, then go for it.
  • Hubby and I really haven't asked much about names for this one.  We have 3 girls so I think another girl name will be tricky.  I like Emmeline, but not sure if hubby would go for it.  I think our boy name would probably be Malachi Mathew, but again we really have talked about it.
