@peony2418 I have a relative who is in her 40's named Poppy and it has aged well with her. It's not a nickname so has to go by it but she has a successful business and I don't think it has effected her at all. I like Penelope and as she gets older she could always choose to drop the nn professionally and just go by Penelope. Plus kids can make the most random, inappropriate nicknames from even the most unsuspected names.

  • If we have a boy it will definitely be John Andrew (family names). For a girl I love Sofia for the first name but we haven't agreed on a middle name yet!

  • haha, thanks @meq124 !  I figure if we pick it, at the very least, I've got some time before I have to think of an awesome retort to being called Poopy.  LOL.  Just so she's ready...

@kiyamurph I think the name Viola sounds very regal.  I like it!

What's the first name you're thinking @disneybaby84 ? So we can see what middle would go with it!

  • @peony2418 At first I didn't love the name Penelope but the more I think about it, the more I like it! And Grace could be a pretty middle name to go with it  :)

  • The first name is Paul. Middle names Sebastian and John have already been done.

We're thinking about Nico right now (boy).  DHs family is Dutch and that's a somewhat Dutch name that Americans can pronounce and it sounds good with our last name (which is very Dutch).  I really like the name Arjen (pronounced "are-yen"), it's DHs middle name, but the poor kid would be in for a lifetime of no one knowing how to pronounce his name.
Hubby and I both have Dutch background too! FIL's name is Arjan. Very similar. We are hoping to use it as a middle name, because as great of a name as it is, you are right, it isn't easy to pronounce. And our Dutch last name is a mouthful in and of itself.... Haha
  • So far we have:  Madison, Hailey & Grace

Girls names we like:  Olivia, Emma & Ava
Boys names we like:  Thomas, Cooper & Ethan
  • Mine are pretty traditional but we're sticking with mostly family names.  Patrick Christopher for a boy and Catherine Ann (used as a double name) for a girl.  The last 3 generations of women in my family have all been Catherine so that was a non-negotiable.

  • Girl names: Chloe, Lexi, Kori (Middle name Denise)

    Boy name: Cory Layne

  • I'm really loving the names Juniper Rose, or Jericho Adair, or Savannah Kittredge.  I have a deep undying urge to name a daughter Minerva too but my husband vetoed that one with a swiftness lol.  Mainly I look at girls names because if it's a boy that lives he'll take his father's name like his father and grandfather before him.

  • DH and I haven't talked much about names yet but for a boy I really like the name Dejan pronounced Day-on.  No ideas for a girl yet.
  • How do you pronounce Viola? I always thought it was Vee-OH-la like the instrument but I've also heard VIE-la like with a long I sound.

Hah...it took me forever to be able to spell DHs last name before it became mine.  Now if I'm super tired, I sometimes have problems spelling it for other people.  I promise, I can spell my own last name!

I'll play!  Right now, we are thinking Penelope, with the nickname Poppy.  No middle name yet, but something short.

Pros:  Pretty name, feminine, it's not already used in our family, we don't know any Penelope's who we hate :)
Cons:  Maybe Poppy sounds a little juvenile?  Also, the obvious non-nickname is Poopy.
I don't think Poppy sounds juvenile.  The only Poppy I know is around 50.  But if later on she felt like it was she could go by Penelope. I like them both.

  • @disneybaby84 When I hear the name Paul I always think of my cousin. His name is Paul Earl. But Earl is a family name, so I'm not sure how popular/loved it is otherwise. I kind of like Paul Thomas.

    It'd be pronounced with a long I, so Vie-ola.
  • If it's a boy we like Allister Robert (mn is both of our fathers)
If it's a girl I have no effing clue... mn will be Irene after my grandmother.. but our last name is shannon so I don't want anything that rhymes with that or that rhymes with middle name.. was liking Riley but I feel like it's getting overused.. and I'm big on name meanings so ya let's just hope boy for sanity's sake lol
  • DH and I haven't discussed yet... DS is Thaddeus and I'm having a really hard time for a boys name that goes with that that isn't too crazy. For a girl I really like Julietta, nn Etta. MN will probably be Jean. I also think JJ would be adorable on a little girl.

  • Yay a name thread!
Our boy is set in stone: Warren Jackson.

However we can not pick a girl name for anything. I'm loving Sawyer, hubs wants Lyla. I'm not into traditional feminine names. I want something that is less normal without being made up.
Big brother is Walker Michael :)

  • @datalover13 I love your girl choice
suggesting Vincent, Fletcher, Sebastian, Bartholomew and Calvin for boys?
  • @peony2418 My best friend's little girl is named Penelope, and I just love it. We call her Sweet P.

    @ElizaAnne I adore Juniper.

@kiyamurph Viola is a great name. Very strong. I've only heard it pronounced Vie-oh-la, so I wouldn't think people would have a difficult time with it. It's also becoming more familiar thanks to the actress Viola Davis.

For a girl, my go-to name has always been Felicity. Middle name Jane. Other favorites are Molly, Rory, and Piper, but I'm almost certain I'll go with Felicity if this little one's a girl.

Boy names are still up for discussion between me and DH, but my favorites are Harrison, Leo, and Heath.

  • @peony2418 my daughter is a Penelope so obviously I love the name :) I love the nickname Poppy too! My daughter won't have it though. When we ask her if we can call her Poppy she tells us "No! Me Penelope!!"
  • A boy would be John Henrik, a girl would be Juliana Morgan. I love the name Bruce for a boy but my husband isn't a fan and it's also my mothers ex-husbands name, so that's out :(
  • Thinking Isla Margaret for a girl and Clinton Thomas for a boy (mine and my fiancés grandfather's names)

@kiyamurph Matthias would be on my list if our last name didn't start with M!

For boys, I'm in love with Tobias (possibly with James as MN). DH doesn't mind the name Tobias itself, but he can't stand Toby as a NN. I'm actually not fond of Toby either, but I'm hoping to still be able to sell him on the full name. I also love how it syncs up with our son's name (Dorian) without being overly matchy phonetically. Otherwise, we agree on Sebastian, but I'm not in love with it the way I am with Tobias.

For girls, DH is hooked on working with the nickname Evie. He suggested Evelyn, which I like, but it's too common for me (our other kids' names are both in the 400s or so). We agree on Genevieve. I have no idea on a MN, but I tend to like offsetting the rarity of the first names of the kids I do have (Skye, Dorian) with a more classic middle (Elise, Alexander). I'd prefer to do the same with his one. I'd also prefer not to reuse any first letters (S, E, D, A, or G), but I know that's getting into obsessively nitpicky territory (and Sebastian for a boy already breaks that rule, so).

    What's the first name?
You could always use surnames for middle names. Or family names are always nostalgic.

Editted because I just saw you answered the question!
Maybe a name that starts with a vowel and has multiple syllables?
