Re: Appointment Thread

  • My OB kinda gave me the feeling like don't hold your breath once she knew there was no progress yet.  So it will be what it will be.

@midwestbaby FX you can get that baby to turn!!!!

  • @SkiChic626 I'm sorry you got such frustrating news! It's totally possible for you to make progress and go into labor naturally, I was only 1cm two days before going into labor with DS1. Can they push back your C section, to at least give you a little more time to see if it happens on its own? And your body is not a failure, you've grown a human!! That in itself is a success, no matter how or when he gets here.

@midwestbaby fx your LO flips around soon, and gives you some relief!
This. I was 2cm and 50% effaced with DD when my water broke.  No glitter plug or anything before it broke.  My body went into labor naturally a few hours later.  That's when I started to really dilate and everything came out.
  • @midwestbaby my LO has been causing incredible stabbing pains on some groin nerve. I'll have to ask my OB if it's a similar position thing or not. It just about takes my breath away when the nerve gets hit!!!

@SkiChic626- try not to worry, some people just have everything happen all at once.  Many, many weeks ago I asked one of the obs, within the practice, how long they would let me go over.  He pretty much said if I don't have a change in cervix by 37 weeks that I will end up with a rcs. I was so upset over the answer and brought it up to my usual Dr. and she said that was not the case at all.  She told me some people just have things happen all at once and she prefers not to even check until 39-40 because some bodies just do things quicker and all at once.  I was so relieved to hear that since that is exactly what happened with dd1. Nothing at 39 weeks and a few days later I was in active later.

@midwestbaby - hoping you can get that baby to turn.  Back labor is no joke!  I'm sure you've been told this already but spinningbabies.com may help immensely.

I just saw your post on moms who bump in the night. It sounds like we have similar symptoms. My midwife told me to try cat/cow/child pose to get baby to turn their head off that back nerve. I can barely get on the floor to do these. Ugh.

  • @midwestbaby ah thanks for the advice! I'll give it a try!
  • @Sekerambo With your dd1 you had no progress at all at 39w??  Like not even baby at -3?  I wasn't so much that I'm not dilated, but the fact that baby is still up so high that my OB couldn't even feel his head at all yet that has me like uuuugh.  And of course all the crazy things run through my head about what could be "holding" him up there.  Maybe my paranoia is reason enough to just relax and go with our original plan.

  • @midwestbaby well my nerve pain has transferred into a numb / tingley foot on the same side after the (very few) hours of sleep I got, so off to the OB I go at lunchtime to make sure all is well! I'll let ya know how it goes.
  • @caitlinj187 You had asked me at one point if that went away for me. The answer is "sort of" - it's not longer constant now his head is engaged, but if he wiggles around I do get it again. The ob at l&d on Monday said it is his shoulder hitting the nerve now, rather than his head sitting on it.

  • @SkiChic626 - FTM, but besides being head down, I wasn't dilated a bit at the 38 week check, despite baby measuring a good 2+ weeks ahead. I feel your annoyance, and it can't possibly be that unusual.
  • I feel kind of left out because I haven't had a cervical check... I have no clue if I'm dialated or not... I keep assuming that I'm not... My neighbor is 2 weeks behind me and she had her 36 week appt.. she had her first check and was dialated and the doctor told her it will be sooner than he thought... and I got so jealous... my Midwife offered to check me at my 38 week appt but I declined.... and she said she would do a membrane sweep... I just know that before this pregnancy... I had decided ... no checks... and I shouldn't membrane sweep til 40 weeks.... because what if my water breaks and then my body isn't ready... this friday August 5th was my original due date( I have long cycles so I knew it wasn't accurate) and it is kind of screwing with my brain...
  • @Bookhousegirl congrats! I know you have been hoping for good news... and my MW offered me a membrane sweep at my 38 week appt... so clearly they still do them... interesting that you said that... I want to look into it now

I did not have a scheduled appointment today but ended up going in mid afternoon after not feeling the baby move at all after lunch.  Of course, as soon as I get there and get all hooked up for the NST, she starts moving around.  Was kind of hoping that the dr would have time to see me today instead of my scheduled time tomorrow, since I was there already, but no luck.

I also had to have a blood draw bc my son had fifth disease (never heard of it) last week and apparently that can be bad for pregnant women.  I haven't had any of the symptoms so not too worried, but wish I could have been more cautious with him when he was apparently contagious.  He had a really high fever though and just wanted to cuddle...

I'm kind of hoping for a membrane sweep tomorrow, I had one with my first and labor started that night...  I wonder if my dr will do it?
  • @SkiChic626 - No progress.  She was as high as could be. I wish I could find the picture of me at 39 weeks with dd1 because you can visibly see how high she was.  My OB at the time thought for sure I would go late but nope she was a due date baby.  My c-section was due to her position (born via section with a side cone head), Not because she wouldn't drop.
  • Anyone here pushing back against induction? I'm scheduled for induction at 40, 3 days. I absolutely do not want to be induced until after 41, but no one is listening to me. They already scheduled my hospital spot. I'm healthy and there are no indications. I also have a Bishops score of 0 right now. Pretty sure induction will just lead to a c section.
  • @missbuffalo I just left my 39 week appointment and apparently have a scheduled induction for new week as well.  Did they say why they wanted to induce?  Or is that just their standard?

In my case, I have been 3cm and 50% for 3 weeks now, so she thinks I will do fine with the induction.  I am also a STM, and the baby is measuring big.  I'm torn on the idea, she seems to think that I'll do well with the induction, and I do like the idea of just being able to have an end date for work.  I'm also nervous about letting the baby go too long if she's already measuring big, as I don't want that to be a potential complication.  Right now its scheduled for 40w1d.

There's still a decent chance I could go into labor on my own, still have 5 more days.
  • I had my 36 week appointment today (although I am 36+5) and a growth scan. Baby's estimated to be 7lbs 4oz already! I know there is a large margin of error on those estimates, but still! He is a big baby. We were unable to get a view of his face today but the US tech did say he had a great head of hair! :)  Late babies and large babies run in my family, so I brought up the possible idea of an induction to my doctor today. She was very open to it and almost made it sound like it was completely elective once I get to 38 weeks or more. She was almost like, too ho-hum about it. I am not trying to do it for convenience, but I am worried that I'll end up with a large baby born 2 weeks late and have some major trauma down there, or C-section. I think I will talk to my husband and then maybe we'll get an induction date on the calendar at 39 or 40 weeks. Perhaps baby will come before then, but if not, I'd kind of like to get him out.

@MissBuffalo Even though my preferences are different, if you are pushing back against induction and don't feel like they're listening to you, keep pushing! It is insane that your doctor would insist on inductions with no indications or any good medical reason -- or perhaps they are just failing to articulate the reason to you. Either way, I would schedule a call with your doctor and rehash this. I would use the same words you used here, "I don't want this and I feel like no one is listening to me," so that he or she knows to slow down and make sure you're on the same page.
  • Had the 37 week appt this morning. No progress, 0cm and cervix is still soft. Its starting to suck at these appointments, it always feels like she's digging around for gold checking me! Anyway I'm going to start walking a bit more, maybe that will get things going.

@KMeredith82 No reason for the induction. They just don't like to go over 41 weeks. I'm 0 dialed and 0 effaced with no contractions yet, so I don't think the induction will go very smoothly. No reason to think baby would be large.

  • I had my 38 week appointment with a different doctor in the practice. DH and DD came with me and she saw DD and asked when I went into labor with her. I said we were induced at 41 weeks. This doctor then asked if we were inducing again. I said yes, if we make it to 41 weeks again. Then she said or sooner. Ummm no. My actual doctor and I have discussed nothing of this and I know of no reason I would be induced sooner. I'm perfectly healthy and baby is doing great (besides a little bit of a quick heartbeat today, but he was in the middle of squirming all over). I'm so glad I picked my doctor out of the practice. She didn't even mention induction until 40 weeks with DD and it was just to get it set up for her on call day at 41 weeks. She even said I could wait until 42 weeks with an NST test at 41 weeks, but I decided to just go with the induction.
  • I had my 36 week appointment. I'm 36wks and 4days. Nothing really happened. My ob seemed rushed. Checked LO heartbeat and size of my stomach that's about it. Except for a 2 second ultrasound to make sure LO flipped (he did). I was hoping for more information about how things seem. Like progression. But hopefully next week. All he said is I'll see you every week till the baby comes..
  • Had my weekly this morning (37 +4).  Had a cervical check, no progress.  My cervix was so high and hard that it felt like she was up to her elbow.  I'm getting impatient but I guess I'll keep waiting.  Haven't even brought up induction as of now, so that's positive I guess.
  • @Allisun85 I thought of your measurements question today at my appointment when I measured a whopping 44 centimeters (up an insane amount compared to last week). My doctor told me sometimes the number is high because of how the baby is positioned rather than being a true value.
  • @MissBuffalo if you feel strongly about not being induced then it's within your patient rights to refuse induction until you feel comfortable. Never let them push you into something you disagree with or feel uncomfortable with. I am refusing to even talk about induction until 42 weeks and won't even consider a sweep until after 40 weeks. My midwives and doctors at the hospital told me that's my right even if they advise differently.

  • @AnnaReid81 Not only that, but it can also indicate a high amount of amniotic fluid. That ended up being the case for me when I was measuring 3 weeks ahead.

  • Good luck, @Allisun85 ! My induction yesterday did result in c-section, but I really think it was due to her not being able to get beneath my pelvic bones. She just wouldn't drop down all the way, despite really strong contractions and a good labor pattern. My mom also had 2 c-sections due to narrow pelvic bones. Anyway, just wanted to say, although I was a bit disappointed / scared to have surgery, The c-section really wasn't bad. I'm feeling pretty good today and baby looks perfect! Hopefully your induction goes smoothly,  but if it does end in surgery I just wanted to let you know it's not so bad.

  • Good luck @Allisun85
Thats sounds really stressful but I'm glad that everyone came to a decision that works.

I had my 37 week appointment today. Still 1cm and 70% effaced like last week. But baby dropped and her head is now low and engaged. I know this doesn't predict anything but at least it's something!

@cait5413 I let my obgyn know I am at the point now where I am in so much pain having surgery sounds like a totally okay alternative...I'm hoping I'll be able to do a vaginal delivery, but even if they were scheduling me for a c-section on Sunday I'd say yes. Thank you for the reassurance!

  • @cait5413 that was one thing I thought was good about my cs with DD is she had the nice round head and not the cone head babies get from pushing.

@Allisun85 that sounds like a lot. Prayers for you that the induction goes smoothly on Sunday. At least there's a light at the end of the tunnel!
  • @Allisun85 that sounds like an emotional roller coaster! Hopefully these contractions will progress you a bit more by Sunday, and your induction will go smoothly!

  • @Allisun85

Glad the docs got their sh!t together in time to schedule you for Sunday. Best of luck. We're all thinking of you!

@Allisun85 I'm sorry your doc made you second guess everything with when to have the baby. FTR my first son was born at 36+3 and no doctors I've spoken to think someone born at that point needs an adjusted age and there was no need to be worried about any learning disabilities, etc. this one came at 37+1 and again no docs (different ob practice) said anything about development of the brain in those weeks ive missed both times.

My first was born at 37+1, but after she was born the doc said she was really only 36+1. She spent time in the nicu, but her doc said she would only be behind for the first 2 years. He was right, by the time she was 18 months she was on track with her development. So even though we never went by adjusted  age, we just expected her to do things a tad later than most babies. Not once we're long term affects mentioned. She's almost 11 now and smart as a whip
  • FINALLY. My body is finally showing the first signs of progress this week. Just had my 38 week appointment (38w4d) and while my cervix is still really high, it's dilated a finger tip (half cm)! Doctor said I'm starting to efface too but didn't give a percentage. I'm so excited that the cramping and the Braxton hicks I've been having actually did something this time. Next week I get to schedule my induction for week 41. I'm really looking forward to having an end date to count down too and a date I can give my work so they know when I'll no longer be here. With the lack of progress until now I was starting to think I would be pregnant forever!
  • Had my almost 38 week appointment today. Turns out my doctor is taking a medical leave so i am getting pushed to a doctor i have never met. Yay. On top of that, we had never discussed inductions and she wanted to induce next week. Um what? I do have GD, but she had never mentioned this.  Baby boy is right on target with weight.

@missbuffalo i am right there with you. I pushed back some and have an induction date of39 weeks but then called back because i felt uncomfortable with her reasoning (only GD). I want to know the latest we can wait and the inherent risk behind waiting.  No weight issues and my numbers are always low. Of course it is Friday, so no one called back and i will have to wait until Monday. Ugh.
  • Had my 38 week appt today. Baby's head is low which explains the recent nerve pain. Also, 1cm and 70% effaced (0.5 cm more in 2 weeks so not too much progress). Anyways, now I have some brownish discharge, not something I would consider a mucus plug or anything. Has this happened to anyone else? I assume it's just that my cervix was a bit irritated during the check?
