  • PoodleDoodleOoo good advice, thank you!!

  • @beachmama14 mine both went through that phase. I usually let them bring something in to play with or snacks. If I forget, then I many times have let them grab a toy to play with from the toy section and just put it back before we check out (which sometimes results in tantruming, but they're actually pretty good about it as long as I'm clear from the beginning when we're putting it back).
  • That reminds me that a few nights ago I was talking to the cashier while checking out and didn't notice them both trying to reach for something outside the cart. They tipped the cart over! Total heart attack, but they were both fine.
  • Warning...this is a rant. I just needed a place to vent.

I'm just super annoyed at my employer today. I requested the flexibility to work from home 1-2 days a week after returning from maternity leave (I work in a position where this is absolutely reasonable and doable), and everyone in the office is 100% on board with the idea except my employer who makes the final decision. To top it off, she mentioned that they really need to think long and hard about it before making any sort of decision because she's worried about opportunities I would have to slack off on hours and that other people might end up having to pick up my slack in work if we even try it out.

    1) I'm an exempt employee who works on salary...which means that if I'm getting my job done, then hours shouldn't be so freaking important to her.
    2) I was brought in a year ago to make changes to some of the programs that were not doing well and have absolutely exceeded expectations of my direct supervisor and other staff, as well as the families and volunteers involved in the program. I even have numbers and evaluations to prove the improvement.
    3) The entire office thinks that our employer would be ridiculous to not let me work from home 1-2 days/week, and can see that it would be detrimental to the programs if I left and they had to hire on someone new.
    4) I have been an exemplary employee who has never slacked off on any work, and have been more than generous and flexible with the amount of time I spend in the office.

I'm just feeling so underappreciated by her, and am frustrated that she thinks I'm just trying to get out of working as much but still get paid. Grrrrrrr. Ok, rant over.

@TheTamedShrew DD loves Dum-dums. We've never tried them at the store. She's really not that horrible (pretty easy to distract and only cries to get out every once in a while). If she was I might think twice about letting her scream it out when she wants out, and would be all over giving her suckers. I will keep it in mind, though! Who knows how she'll be in the future or how this LO will do.

  • Dum-dums are a regular form of bribery with Reese. Yes, I bribe my kid if it means preventing a tantrum.

  • Oh man, a Dum-dum got us through the last haircut E got.. they even got to use the clippers and really do around his ears and back of neck. He was so infatuated.  Buying a bag and keeping a few on hand for screamy moments.

More power to the moms who are good with letting their littles scream.. I just can't do it. It makes me so tense. At home, if he screams we let him have his moment and offer comfort when he's ready. He can scream till the cows come home if he wants.. but in public I'm quicker to intervene and search for something to tame the wild.

@AnnaS930 love the invitation. We may steal your idea

I also like the idea of having dum dums on hand especially for hair cuts- those clippers terrify him
  • I have such a love/hate relationship with Pinterest. I really like keeping some recipes there and finding new ones.. but the front page where they anticipate what I'm going to like is no good.  Just because I'm pregnant doesn't mean I want a billion pins about how to gain the least weight possible throughout pregnancy (articles that are straight up offensive to women who gain more than a few pounds), or today's gem "Fun Ways to Try to Induce Labor: For the end when you just can't stand being pregnant any longer!"  UGHHHHH

A little bummed out. Just got invited to my one friend's destination bachelorette party in Nashville. It's in August, so obviously I can't go, but a lot of my college friends are going. The bummer is that it's the same weekend as my baby shower, so my friends won't be there. It's not anyone's fault or anything deliberate, but I'm just a little bummed.
  • @Thscary That IS a bummer, I don't blame you for being a little disappointed!  It happens, though...  Maybe, just maybe, your friends will realize they're all missing your shower and will do something to celebrate baby with you on a different weekend?

@KristinUM12 I'm sorry you're in that position. Hopefully she comes around soon. It's annoying when people assume your intentions!

@Thscary That sucks! I'm missing some August events as well and a part of me is actually relieved LOL. I'm a terrible person sometimes.

My random is that our sex reveal party is this weekend and my excitement has been overridden by worry/anxiety about my dog's health. I really wish she could talk to me and tell me what's wrong. She seems to be doing a little better but is still moping around, acting depressed. Someone said my dog was probably depressed because the baby is coming to dethrone her! I don't know enough about dog psychology to even consider this theory but at this point I'll take anything that explains her strange behavior. The ironic part is I'm a therapist and she works with me some days...(she being the dog lol).
  • @mom2adoodle - I don't buy into dogs having crazy senses.. but last pregnancy (and this one) if I'm home along at night, my dog seems to be on high-alert and likes to go outside and bark like a crazy little thing.. then she runs back inside and puts herself right on my lap.  I swear she isn't like this when I'm not pregnant.. so who knows, maybe they do have a pregnancy sense

  • @AnnaS930 That's interesting! Before this depressive episode the only signs my dog has shown of pregnancy senses is sniffing my mouth a lot. She didn't do that before I was pregnant so I'm assuming I smell different?
  • @mom2adoodle I am convinced that my 2 dogs know that I am pregnant. They are much more cuddly and protective than they were when I was not pregnant. Although I truly hope your pup is not sick, I would be leery about assuming your dog is that noticeably depressed about your pregnancy. That's just me tho!

Yes, exactly this.. a better way of saying what I was trying to say. I think my dog knew, but I wouldn't blow off symptoms that bother you thinking it's just a reaction to something the dog might have no idea is coming!

  • @Sbrown721 Hmmm, my dog isn't more protective yet. What she DOES know is that there are some toys in the house that do not belong in her toy box and she isn't too thrilled about that. My mom bought the baby adorable tinkle/rattle plush sports balls that my dog is DYING to have but I know she will destroy them before the baby even comes lol. I constantly catch her in the baby's room looking for what is seemingly the toys which is interesting. Sometimes these little animals are too smart for their own good!

  • @mom2adoodle - Maybe I missed an earlier post.. what's going on other than the mopy behavior? Is she eating ok? Normal bowel movements?

  • Okay I have another random.

Has anyone ever been weirded out by some people's taste in people? Like how consistent it is? A friend dated this guy all throughout college and she is now dating a new guy who looks EXACTLY like the old bf!! Like, if you told me they were brothers I would believe you!
  • @KristinUM12 - It sucks that you are in that situation. I am also salaried and I once had a manager that was rather strict with us maintaining our hours and didn't like us working from home for that reason. I was warned that the managers most concerned with the hours of their salaried employees are usually the managers who don't know how to evaluate their employees any other way. In my case it proved to be true. That manager really struggled to identify when someone did a good job versus poor job. It was very frustrating at many times.

@mamadomino - even though it is nice to have the relief of a diagnosis, it sucks about the kidney stones.

@Megan324 - congrats on the new car!

  • @mom2adoodle One of my dogs is a MANIAC about toys. You never see him without a toy in his mouth. When he gets in trouble for doing something he runs and gets one of his toys to bring to you. Pretty cute. We are really interested in how that will work with all the baby toys soon to be lying around the house! We may need a play yard for baby and baby toys or else our poor dog is going to be so confused about what is his and what is baby's! Sounds like you'll have the same problem!
  • Awesome @Megan324 - At like, 8 weeks pregnant, my Subaru Impreza needed new tires to pass inspection. I traded it in that day and got a Toyota Highlander. The front was super crowded with a carseat in the back, so 2 back there would have made it super uncomfortable for my husband (much taller than me).  It feels great to have a big ol' family friendly ride!

  • @AnnaS930 She refuses to eat her regular food but will eat chicken and rice. So that's positive. She hasn't had many bowel movements since Saturday but the last one (yesterday) was normal. Urinating okay. Blood work checked out and nothing in the abdominal xray. She's just moping around, not wanting to walk, play, etc. Lethargic bump on a log. She just wants us to pet her :/ She's usually bouncing off the walls asking for attention and bringing us toys for tug of war so it's just a marked shift in behavior that's really bothering me.
  • @AnnaS930 I am dying for a toyota highlander! I have a toyota prius now, but I'm sure I'll be trading it in for a highlander when baby #2 eventually comes along. Glad you like it!
  • @AnnaS930 mhm! I told him the next car will be a mini van. He laughed and said he would never.

Haha we will see in a few when when we have the next one.

  • @Sbrown721 I'm starting to think the dog and baby will essentially share toys LOL. I'm not sure how to create barriers because as it is our entire house is full of random toys everywhere. Some people baby gate but I'm hesitant to seclude her from anything baby related. I don't want her to resent the baby or his presence. Teaching her (or the baby) whose is what doesn't sound probable either. I just have to stop her from destroying them! I have no idea how she will react with the new baby and his stuff so here's to hoping it's no biggie and life will work itself out!

Bummer... That would concern me too (although willing to eat and digesting food I think is a huge relief.. makes things less urgent in my mom/dog mom brain). Darn, wish I had some ideas.. perhaps the creation of the nursery with the new toys is enough to clue doggy in that a new (maybe she thinks puppy) is coming. Buy her some similar new toys and let her have at it?? lol

  • @AnnaS930 That's actually a really good idea LOL.
  • @mom2adoodle As weird as it sounds, I think we're just going to say "screw it" and let the dog use the baby toys and just have to clean them after each time. I agree with the seclusion being a bad idea.
  • @mom2adoodle - I have a shih tzu/bichon mix.. so small, 12 pound dog. I couldn't logically think of any way to keep baby and dog toys separate as she needs things close to the ground as well.  Emmett has learned pretty quickly that dog toys are not of great interest (though he likes to try to throw the mini tennis balls for her).. and sure, he's stuck a few dog bones in his mouth but there's much worse out there than that.

Roxy has been surprisingly decent about baby toys (but not anything with baby spit/milk taste on it.. she chewed up many pacifiers, bottle nipples and burp cloths that had spit up on them). We keep the dog downstairs when we're not upstairs (all bedrooms upstairs) and only let her in the nursery when we're in there.. she goes right for the changing table and tries to eat baby wipes, etc. Emmett LOVES the dog, like pure obsession. Roxy tolerates him.. and I'm sure it'll get better as he gets older and learns to be a bit more gentle ;)

I'm sure your fur baby and real baby will really benefit from growing up together too

  • @mom2adoodle Have you tried switching brands/flavors of dog food or trying something that's limited ingredient at all?  My pup has an extremely sensitive stomach that has been an on and off issue since we got him 6.5 years ago.  And I can absolutely say that stress in his life exacerbates it!  (Any deviation from his routine or any "scary" situation will give him a nervous tummy, which he responds to by not eating and eventually retching from an empty stomach.)  Not saying your pup and mine have the same problem - it definitely sounds different just in the fact that your pup's symptoms came about suddenly whereas mine has had it all along - but just that life changes definitely can have an impact!  We've had good luck trying different brands of foods over the years and he responds to the highest quality, lowest ingredient ones.  (Most expensive, too, but if it's what works, we'd do anything for our guy!)

    Ok need to vent!!!
My oldest son took his new Herbie the LoveBug car to school today for show&tell. He got it for his 7th birthday at the beginning of the month and is obsessed with all things Herbie! He was so excited to show it to all his friends. We talked repeatedly about how no one was supposed to touch it and he needed to keep it to himself. Well he's waiting for me to pick him up after school and sitting with his classmates.  Well another little boy in his class grabbed his car (Turns out he unzipped my sons backpack) and  pushed it into the road where it got run over and smashed by one of the parents trucks. I know because my sons old kindergarten teacher and the superintendent brought him to my car and explained what happened since they both saw it. My son was distraught. And it was very concerning coming up to get him and seeing him sobbing hysterically before I knew what happened. So I am extremely frustrated and don't know how best to handle this situation. He's trying to be brave right now but keeps breaking into tears and it's breaking my heart. I just wish I could make it better already.

*edited after further discussion with my son. It was in his backpack at the time
  • @KristinUM12 - I'm sorry to hear that. I can understand that some employers have the worry of employees not being as productive if they're working at home versus in the office. But I think they need to evaluate that on a case by case basis. (Probably easier said than done but it could happen.) I work for an IT company (mind you, an IT company that creates & sells solutions that enable you to work remotely) but they are requiring everyone to be in an office building (the entire reason I had to move across the country). Of course there exceptions but it's still frustrating.

@Thscary - That is definitely a bummer. Hoping you get to celebrate with them specifically another weekend!

@Megan324 - Yay for new vehicles!! (And good payments! :) )

@mamadomino - Yuck. But I'm so glad that babies are doing well and there's no infection!

@mom2adoodle - Glad to hear she seems a little better. Still thinking of you guys. I will say that, while they haven't seemed to become depressed, both our dogs and both cats have noticed a difference in me. The cats are much more snuggly (Dinah thinks my belly is her own personal pillow) but the dogs don't seem to care. Maybe because they've been through this with me before and they're waiting for the insanity that comes with bring the babies home. ;)
