  • Good luck, ladies!

Shit is starting to get very real for me. Had my normal appointment today with GBS swab (I'm 36w4d.) Baby has been breech the entire time so my OB did a quick cervical check and sure enough, there's a foot there. We double checked with a sonogram and she is sure enough very footling breech. She explained that while there is still enough fluid in there to attempt an ECV, that this is the hardest position to attempt it with. There are of course the normal worries of shearing the placenta, stressing the baby out, and other things that could lead to me needing an emergency C-section after the attempt. I guess I'm wondering if anyone has experiences with ECV and footling breech babies? I'm going to do some more searching on here. Maybe try some Webster technique with the chiropractor but I'm not sure if I'm a little late with attempting that. Scary to think that I could possibly be scheduling a C-section within the next couple of weeks. I'm not necessarily against it at all, it just wasn't exactly what I expected to hear so I think I need some time to let it all soak in.
  • I'm excited for everyone! Can't wait to see pictures of your cuties!

Just had my 35 week appt and the doc was doing a strep swab (it seemed late for that? But I changed doctors late in the game) and I mentioned that it felt like the baby had dropped and he said he could check... He gets in there and says "Yep there's his head, you're 1 cm dilated, see you at next week's appointment!" Wait...what? He said he doesn't expect anything to change at this point, but oh my god did that ever make it real!
The norm for our OB practice is 36 week swab test (but if your appointment is at 35 weeks or 37 weeks....they do it then). I have never heard of anyone doing it earlier than that, as all of my friends/family that go to other places for prenatal care, 36 weeks was standard there too. Mine is at 35 weeks because I don't have an appointment during week 36.

  • @eymi I just had mine yesterday at 36+3. They do it close to the end of pregnancy because it can actually change day to day. So even if you tested positive say, you might not have it the day you go into labor and give birth, but then in that case to be safe they give you the antibiotics. Then of course the opposite can also be true, so it seems like a silly test to me..
  • Ahh so many ladies already having babies or getting their dates set. Exciting and scary.

Thanks! I didn't really know tbh, there were just so many tests early on that I wasn't expecting this one. Maybe they told me I'd have it done but I can barely remember my name

I know! With my EDD July 29, I feel like the "little sister" of the board. Watching and learning from "big sisters" all the while running behind saying, "Wait for me!"
I feel the same way! I'm due July 26th but I'm actually very thankful because all
of these ladies ahead of us are giving us such great insight and advice!!
  • Good luck @bunkie999!

I also just had my GBS swab done yesterday at 36.3.
  • Wait doctors can see baby parts while checking the cervix?? What??
  • Wait doctors can see baby parts while checking the cervix?? What??
I think it's more of a feeling than seeing. A 1 cm wide hole has got to be really hard to see anything.. But yeah during my cervical check last week I was told she's definitely head down.

That's cool/interesting yet disturbing at the same time lol
  • I had my swab test last week too and she checked to see if her head was down and she said she can definitely tell her head is down. I hadn't dialed yet but that was a week ago. Who knows now lol.
This thread makes me so happy and scared lol everyone having their babies ... sh*t definitely just got real!!! And I'm now on mat leave ... bring on the fun stuff!

Yes, it's a feeling thing.  When I was checked after having pre-term contractions weeks ago, my doctor said, "Her head is down, but I tapped it, and it floated back up, so she's not locked in and engaged yet."  Uhh...  What?? Haha.

  • @MollyH1987 I have my 35w appt next week where they are going to check baby's position.  She has been breech previously and now of course I just can't tell.  I am having to see the NP because my doc is on vacation so we will probably have to wait till the 36w appt to see what the plan is if the NP tells me she is still breech.
  • @mollyH1987 Just curious- Did they feel for position or check using an ultrasound?

@mrsmommya I'm in the same position.  Baby has been breech the whole pregnancy and his position doesn't feel any different right now.  I'm 36 weeks tomorrow and have an appointment Wednesday.

  • @hreed7289 I asked at my 33 week appt when they started to check position and so she felt around and said she thought baby was head up.  She pulled out a little portable ultrasound to confirm.  At my 35 week appt they did the same thing, no change.  I've not had any cervical checks.  I am 36+1 so this week I have a full ultrasound to estimate growth and fluid levels which will give them a little more information to work with in regards to trying an ECV if I so choose.

  • Also, according to the ACOG only 3-4% of babies are breech at term so it's interesting that there seem to be quite a few of us!
  • @hreed7289 I had an ultrasound last Thursday which confirmed her position. At my appointment today, she said we could try an ECV but that I was not a good candidate for it. Being a FTM, my uterus isn't going to be as pliable as a STM (and so on) and my placenta is anterior so it could be easier for them to cause a tear or dislodge it. If that would happen or if baby's heart rate dropped, then I would go in for an emergency C-section anyways. My cervix was nice and closed so it doesn't seem likely I'll go into labor before then on my own.

Agreed! I keep seeing how rare it is for them to turn into the correct positioning after this point and it's surprising that there's so many of us with the same issues.
  • @Backbypopulardemand are you feeling better??

We did the hospital tour tonight. I couldn't get over how quiet the l & d wing actually was. My first comment to my husband when we left was me questioning if the entire l & d floor can hear when a woman is in labor.  I'm 3 weeks out and I feel like I'm in total denial!!!
  • @winnie1122 oh my gosh, how precious!! I have been wishing I could see baby girl again before she was born. Patience is not my strong suit. :-)
