What my pregnant self is eating

Re: What my pregnant self is eating

  • I normally would eat a protein bar for breakfast, but now I'm eating coco puffs every morning from a cup with no milk (it's the only thing that sounds remotely edible in the AM), then by lunch I'm hungry and will eat something like pasta, mac and cheese, or a salad if i can stomach it, and by dinner I'm nauseated worse than the AM and it's a free-for-all with whatever the stomach desires- or what I convince it to desire when all other options seem disgusting.. (and that might only be one thing which is not good for me, like plain chips with american cheese - also not normally part of my diet, or ice cream). I'm hoping to feel good about my diet someday.. for now I guess I'll be carb-ing and dairy-ing (is that a word?) it up.

I swear I had this talked out in my head incase the dr asked today. Yes, I've been eating bread and grease and that's all that sounds ok. Plus cantaloupe so that's good, right?
  • Potato salad. Lunch yesterday, dinner last night and now for a "snack". In my defense, this is pretty special potato salad that can only be bought at a couple stores and one deli. It's amazing and it's all I want to eat.

Did I mention that I've put a little Cholula on it? Incredible. I've also scooped some up with BBQ Kettle chips. Maybe I should have kale tomorrow. A kale and spinach salad.

  • @lilwonder YASSS p-sal! Good lord I love potato salad. It doesn't even have to be a special kind, no shame, girl. I would eat any potato salad for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.
  • I had horrible insomnia last night.  Up at 1:45 to pee.  I think I slept again until around 4.  By 4:45 I was playing with my phone.   All I could think about was the desperate need for all the fruit.  I went to the grocery store at 6:45 and bough horribly overpriced for my laziness pre-cut fruit salad. I think I have grazed down 1/2 of it already.  It's 2lbs of fruit.... Give me all the mango and kiwi.  This is probably the most healthy thing I have eaten in several days & it's still carby carb carb.

  • Stupid Costco and their stupid giant box o' Rice Krispy Treats. I eat like 3-4 a day. It's INSANE. You think 1 would be satisfying, but no.

Yup, tangerines on a bed of rice. Fast forward to now and I don't crave a damn thing and have entered the world of food aversions. Even the thought of Girl Scout cookies makes me

  • I grew up in Hawaii, and lately I've been saying I just want to spend my pregnancy there so I can eat Kozo (a sushi chain, because I love their tobiko hand rolls), and shave ice... Needless to say, I haven't been able to get these items on the mainland, so I still want them.

  • I've been pretty much living on chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese. Totes healthy. It's a bit frustrating because I really want to eat healthy, especially in 1st tri when so much is going on, but healthy=gross. Eggs are getting to be really nasty and I'm not sure what the hell else to eat for breakfast since cereal is also gross and oatmeal/other carby things don't fill me up for very long.

This is me! I made braised short ribs over polenta last night. While they were braising the smell was incredible- I was salivating for them the entire time. I made myself a plate, looked at DH and said, "nope". I cried a little bit.

  • I found a good breakfast routine. Ironically, I have the hardest time eating when I'm the most hungry, since that's when the nausea and general food aversion are strongest. So I start the day with a fruit and spinach/kale smoothie (with a little plain protein powder). Drinking is much easier than eating.

I also pack a simple peanut butter sandwich, which I'm ready to eat a couple hours later, around 10. That holds me over to lunch.

Other than that, I have been choosing some pretty unhealthy options. I think that since I have to force myself to eat most of the time, my brain is looking for the most satisfaction from the food. So, cheesy nachos or things drowned in ranch dressing seem appealing.

Luckily my husband is mostly in charge of the dinner plans and does the cooking, so he's got my back when it comes to healthier, more balanced options.
  • Here's what my pregnant self is NOT eating: pasta--at least not until this morning/noon/night sickness is 250% nipped in the bud. (TMI story to follow...) A few weeks ago, I was craving spaghetti, so I ate a big plate, and it was delicious. Later that night I threw up the whole plate, and the experience of noodles sliding back up my throat was utterly scarring. Apparently not scarring enough though, because yesterday I decided to try again with fettuccine. Again, totally delicious. But again, a few hours later when I was laying down for bed, it comes back up to pay a visit. And this time it comes up with such force that the fettuccines make their way through my nose. AHHHHHHHH. I don't know why I thought bigger noodles was a good idea. It was definitely not a good idea. No more pasta for me.

Anyways... I'm trying to ease myself back into the land of vegetables, whole grains, etc., because the lack of fiber in my plain, processed anti-nausea diet is not amenable to digestive bliss. I think it's still going to take a few weeks though. I can do restaurant vegetables (i.e., veggie tacos at Chipotle), but cooking them makes me kind of sick. Otherwise my staples are Fiber One bars, Gatorade Frost, Cheerios with milk, peanut or almond butter (just on a spoon), and microwavable cheese pizzas. Every couple days I'll get a craving for something a little more "real," like veggie quesadillas, Mediterranean food, or bean burgers, but those cravings only last a day or two, and I can't handle very much.
  • I had a glass of chocolate malt ovaltine before I left for work today. If the nausea is bad, I have a big swig of Gatorade instead and that helps a lot. I've really needed to get something in my stomach in the early mornings or I get lightheaded and cranky and make an emergency stop at Dunkin Donuts which is a pretty bad habit.

English muffin with egg and cheese for breakfast, a small cup of pickled beets for a snack, and I'm looking forward to leftover coconut/peanut braised cabbage with some rice and salmon for lunch. I could have eaten a pound of salmon last night it was so good.

It's a late night at work so I'll probably just make a package of gnocchi when I get home then go to bed with a full pasta belly.
  • I want Krispy Kreme donuts so bad right now.

  • My eating routine seems to be me cooking something because it sounds appealing and then once it's cooked it's gross so I cook something else and then that's gross. It's a never ending cycle. My cravings change too much.

  • I found myself craving raisin bran and potato chips, which I never eat or even have in the house, so the hub went on a mission for me. Then I want all the fruit I can put in me, which is good. I've easily put away several fruit baskets worth in the past few weeks. I have been trying to make meals ahead of time so I have them on hand when the waves of feed me now or I will die happen. But sometimes that food just doesn't sound good, so instead to the cereal. Shame. At least DH has something for dinner that way.

Date balls have been a good go to for raising my blood sugar when I feel wonky (dates, cashews, and coconut flakes).

  • Is anyone avoiding peanuts/peanut butter in concern for increased risk of allergies? I have seen conflicting studies and with celiac disease (which my kid could very likely have), I would really love it if they didn't have a peanut allergy too. That being said, since I can't eat anything that I used to love (sushi is my go to gluten free meal... or at least it was), I feel like the only way I will gain the amount of weight my doc wants me to is if I eat spoonfuls of peanut butter.

@ash111916 - research now shows that maternal avoidance of allergens doesn't actually reduce the risk of development of peanut allergies in the long term (some studies show short term reduction of allergy reduction but this doesn't carry through to school age). Children with a first degree relative (parent or sibling) with a severe peanut allergy are at increased risk, but those without family history have no reason to believe that they will be allergic to peanuts (not to say that they can't be, just that there's no increased risk if you continue to consume peanuts/peanut products). It's also recommended now that peanut products be introduced earlier, rather than waiting until after one year, since early exposure actually decreases the risk of developing an allergy.

(Paranoid parents or those with reason to be concerned about an allergy can always offer peanut based foods in or very near an ER the first few times so that help is steps away if there is a reaction).

eta: I am 100% guilty of consuming at least half a jar of peanut butter (mostly on a spoon) already this pregnancy. A spoonful of peanut butter is a great snack while you make a snack to help satisfy that "feed me now" feeling'

Thanks for the response @comealongponds! (Don't hate me everyone) I've always had trouble gaining weight and my sister eats a lot of peanut butter to pack on weight. I feel like it's the only way I will be able to do it. I also know once I start eating it I won't stop (like there will be a spoon and open jar of pb on my desk all day long).

I'm not sure there's any studies definitely saying we should avoid nuts. My daughter is allergic to all nuts. It's honestly luck of the draw. I have severe environmental allergies, she got the eczema, asthma, and food allergies. However, my other daughter only got asthma.

I packed a very healthy bowl of quinoa with kale and mushrooms, but then I dumped a CUP of Moe's queso on it.  Sorry to everyone who just vomited while reading this.
  • I've been craving watermelon like mad, but had a bad, mushy, un-sweet piece the other day and it totally turned me off. Right now all I want is pad thai with shrimp.
  • For the last 12 hours I've been wanting organic American cheese melted on everything.  The organic slices taste so much better than conventional American cheese does these days - it's like it used to be in my childhood P-:

  • I can't stop eating cereal and I haven't eaten cereal in YEARS. And I had a chunk of cheese for dinner the other day.
  • I've been craving fish lately! And I normally HATE fish! Just had some amazing tilapia and shrimp for lunch!

  • That sounds so good @MaMaBear1323

I was super excited to have chips and guacamole today (I'm pretty sure if been craving it because of this thread) but when I open the container the smell made me gag. So bummed because it sounds so good. So instead I ate a bunch of goldfish crackers and some 10 year aged cheddar cheese.
  • OMG dried mango is the highlight of my life right now.
  • Dipping chips in refried beans with melted cheese at my favorite Mexican restaurant is my constant craving.

Also, gluten free Kara's Cupcakes. Specifically the chocolate with cream cheese frosting. Yummmm.

  • @HeyBooHey  I second the cereal! Handfuls of honeycombs for dinner yesterday, then for breakfast today! I also just discovered that McD's is selling mozzarella sticks (not sure if this is new, I never eat there, but my husband discovered it and told me he thought I'd like them), but they have been lunch more than once this week.. totally conducive to growing a baby, right?
  • Lately - Chicken Caesar anything. So weird. I'm usually a light vinaigrette kinda girl. I'm sure as soon as I go out and buy a bottle of caersar dressing, the craving will change. Before this, it was Lo mein, and before that it was pepperoni pizza.
