I'm just sptiballing here so if this is a terrible idea...ignore it. Maybe you could tuck a large blanket under the mattress and run it up the side of the crib and fling it over the outside and somehow secure it on the outside. Kind of like a bumper but with no exposed seams/ledges to use as leverage to climb.
@cmerribury my lovetit is for your taking the day to rest, not that you're feeling so crappy; hope you feel better fast! @kitteh81 I'm all about just holing up in our little home for a while and not going anywhere! Glad we aren't traveling for the holidays. @skruhmin that's a tough one! My little gets his legs completely stuck in the gate if I take a shower or something but the other kind of gate he can climb right over. And we have to have the gate up for safety. Are you concerned about a bed bc he can get out of it at his own will, or worried about him rolling off? Right now our crib has the front side off and the mattress as low as it goes, so at nap time baby can get in and out of it, but we also have a safety latch on the door to the kids' room so if we needed to keep him in the room for a safety reason it would be possible.

Might be a good idea. I'll run it by dh. Seriously frustrating. And we are also dealing with the 18 month sleep regression so you never know if he's being defiant and crying for no reason or if he's trapped like that. And our Webcams aren't working - seriously need to buy new ones before baby comes, but we've been putting it off. But we always hesitate to poke our heads in there in case he's just trying to be a turd.

I just don't want him having full reign of the room yet, especially with the boys sharing a room right now. I know it's coming but 17 months seems too early for that. We did a mattress on the floor with ds1 when he was 2 and it worked well.

We use cloth and love it. We combo diaper too though, using sposies at night. Once the baby is eating solids, we will also use them when we are going out for the day.

I really want to but DH is not a fan of the idea right now. (I think mainly becuase he isn't sure how cleaning them will go.) Do you pre wash/rinse them before putting them in the washer?
I would LOVE to try cloth diapers, but with us renting and not having washer/dryer hook-ups at our apartment, Its not feasible. There is no sense in spending that much money on diapers when we can only get to the Laundromat once a week. That would be gross if they had to sit that long, whether in a wet pail or not. Once we are able to move out (and I WILL have a house with hook-ups: we do have a washer/dryer but they are in storage), I may consider trying them.

@JLaVO888 With EBF babies, you just toss them straight into the wash – breastmilk poops are water soluble. Once they start solids, you have to rinse the poop off in the toilet first, either just dunk and swish, or a diaper sprayer (my preference!). It just hooks to the side of your toilet and looks kind of like the little sprayer that is on your kitchen sink.

my mom used cloth diapers for me & HATED it. i would do it if i didn't have such a weak stomach washing those out would make me puke instantly.. but it would be a great money saver! hahah.
@JLaVO888 We started out cloth diapering. I did about 3 months worth of researching and watching videos and following the Cloth Diaper board on TB (which was really very helpful). I picked a few different styles and got some used and some new, and had everything prepped. We tried them for the first few weeks, but I realized my LO was just a super soaker, and they weren't going to work the way I had hoped. We went to disposables (and I sold my whole stash for a profit so no love lost). To answer your question, you soak them all in the wash first, then do the cycles. That helps remove most of the yuck before they get the suds. Once they're starting solids, the poos become more ploppable (straight into the toilet) or sprayable into the toilet (some companies make spray attachments). Best thing to know, it's best to have top load washers for these. Front loaders don't work as well.
It's really easier than it seems, honestly. And the diapers are fun and cute. When it really paid off as a big money saver for us was being able to use the same diapers for the next babies. Almost all our our cloth diapers are still in awesome condition for this baby (#4) and have been used on all the previous 3. And when we are done with them, I'll probably sell most of them to recoup a little bit. And many of mine were bought gently used as well.

I got my first twin comment yesterday. An old guy at church asked me how much longer I had to go. When I said "12 weeks," he replied, "Wow! You sure there's only one in there?" Haha. @oceanchild sorry you are so sore.
I have also been up half the night. I am pretty sure Ds is just so excited about Christmas and since he is three and doesn't understand time he keeps waking up thinking it is Christmas morning. Today, he woke up and ran right out to the Christmas tree to look for presents. I am trying so hard not to be grumpy with him but I have had 4 hours or less sleep for 2 nights in a row and there is just so much I need to do.
Hope everyone else has a relaxing day! @kynbar5 hope you are feeling better.
Maybe you could get a countdown calendar? That way they don't necessarily need to know how to tell time, but when the calendar is at the end it is Christmas time!!

I have a hard time with socks but our bathtub is at the perfect height for me to stand and prop a foot up for painting. At least it was right at thanksgiving (that's the last time u painted them). Although now it might be time to just do professional pedis, you know, since the foot massage comes with it.

I really wanted to do cloth diapers, but like @charley15 we're apartment dwellers. Luckily we have washers and dryers on-site, but they are coin-op so it'd be too expensive to be worth it.
I've heard that cloth diapered toddlers potty train sooner, which would be nice. My first didn't get fully out of daytime diapers til almost 3 and a HALF which is WAY TOO LONG. And my 2.5 yr old isn't making any meaningful progress towards potty training (we'll get a few successful trips to the toilet and then she'll celebrate by peeing on our bed or pooping in the tub.) And they're GIRLS. I thought potty training girls was supposed to be easier?!
Do any of you use cloth diapers or tried it and hated it?
We used cloth for our son and will for this one as well. Bonus: they are already paid for. Boo ya!
ETA @kitteh81 The earlier potty training is likely due to them being able to feel when they are wet easier and earlier. My son started training at 18 months, and was fully trained by 20. So the rumor holds true for us.
We cloth diapered and loved it. We had to use sposies for the first month just because DS was too little for our stash (about 22 pocket diapers). It's a breeze to wash EBF diapers, and solid-food poop isn't that bad. I loved my sprayer but got along okay without it after we moved too an apt. that didn't have the right toliet hookup. I can't wait to cloth diaper DD.
Potty training was not easy with DS. We started the week he turned 2 and all he would do was scream for his diaper. It was a comfort thing to him I guess. We took a break then powered through another week later of "I want my diaper" tears to really get started.
@smushi We actually just bought a new top loader washer. I think that is where a lot of DH hesitation comes from. He somehow thinks that putting a poopy diaper in it is going to ruin the NEW of the washer. He also thinks that poop will linger in the washer and get poop on our other loads of laundry... I don't know how to get him to understand that that is not the case. He is being a major germaphobe about it. He wants me to basically wash the whole diaper before I put it in the washer which sounds like more of a hassle than its worth.
Happy Monday Ladies it's U/S day! FX the placenta moved up within the last 10 weeks!!! Pretty excited to see our little man. I've never had an U/S this far along
Definitely more hassle than it's worth! Whether you cloth diaper or not, poopy stuff (baby clothes, blankets, changing pad cover, your clothes) and puked on stuff WILL be going into the new washer. I mean, babies make a lot of poop (and pee and puke) that doesn't always end up only where it's intended.

I hope everyone has a better week than last week, none of us need drama or to stress worrying about each other!
I'm celebrating because I just found out that I got an apartment finally! It's been a stressful month worrying that my moving truck wouldn't have anywhere to go when it gets here on Wednesday, or that it wouldn't all fit in the storage unit I rented, so it's a huge weight off my shoulders. Time to text a ton of people to let them know while I wait for my glucose test blood draw.
@smushi and @oceanchild Yeah his poop/germ free bubble is going to be popped pretty quickly. I think he will be able to handle it much better than he gives himself credit for. He is going to be so in love with this little girl that he will forget what all the worry was about in the first place. Maybe after he pays for diapers a few times he will be more willing to switch over as well.
This is how I feel during and after putting on my pants/socks/shoes every morning.
The discussion of cloth diapers in my house sounds a lot like yours @jlavo888. DH thinks the whole idea of it is gross and since he does the laundry I gave up that fight pretty quickly. I'm a little bummed but now his new thing is finding amazing disposable diaper deals lol so that is fun.
We plan to cloth diaper even though we're in an apt with no hookups as well. We're going to attempt to save some money by just air drying the diapers rather than pay for washing and drying. We probably won't use cloth for the first few weeks though, then it depends on if we find a day care that would be willing to do cloth as well. This could all be a total failure honestly...
@cecilb93 I learned to look at it as, nothing is really a failure. You're just trying things out, and if you end up doing something else, no one will see it any differently. Parenting for me has just sort of turned into one big science experiment. If it works, stick with it. If it doesn't, move on to plans 2-26.

Congratulations @SparkE82!! Lots of awesome raises and bonuses lately!
So we thought we were going to CD but I don't think we will. With that being said someone gave me three newborn diapers and inserts. I don't know the brand or anything and I think they are blush or gold or some combo in color. ANYWAY if anyone wants them I'd be happy to mail them out to you because we won't use them.
Daycare with cloth is a big thing. Ours lets us use them, which is awesome. We have to bring in a diaper genie for them to use just for us, and each day we take home the soiled diapers. Once our son was over a year the laundry slowed down a lot. @CecilB93 if you can rig up a way to dry them in the sun that would be awesome. They dry faster and UV rays sanitize them.
We used disposables for the first several weeks with our son because he was too small for the AIO pockets we have. This time I wanted to use cloth right away but wasn't able to buy a newborn stash (as this will be our last). I ran the numbers and found a GREAT rental program in my area. Just to compare, to use disposables for the first 12 weeks (up front: the dye free, chemical free ones I'd be comfortable with) was over $950. To rent was $225, with $125 of that as a deposit that comes back when you return the diapers. That alone sold my husband on it.
He was reluctant to CD at first, but once we got into it, he was fine. He does the laundry so he ended up being the one to test new sanitization theories and pre-soak options. He became a cloth advocate pretty quickly. We live for and love our diaper sprayer. I recommend it to anyone using cloth. Also, to be totally fair, my mom bought all 36 of our AIO Bummis Pocket diapers as our gift for my last son. So not having to spend a penny on diapering was a miracle to him. It's even better this time around!
I am so interested in them because when I worked at a day care, I loved the cloth diapers. However, I just had to bag them and send them home to be washed by someone else. I have always had extremely sensitive skin (to dyes, fragrances and chemicals) and I noticed that the babies with cloth diapers usually had less diaper rash problems than the ones we used disposable on. We will have a wonderful babysitter who used cloth on her children (before the awesome button cloths they have now) so I know she is on board. I just really need to hook DH on it. I'm thinking about just buying one or two so he can experience it and then see where it will go from there.
