Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How many words was your tot able to say around 13 months?

I am a little worried about my son. I keep finding various answers as to how many words he should be able to say at his age (13.5 months).

Right now he only really says, "hi, dada, and "ga" (dog)" He used to be able to say "mama" and "up" also but hasn't done so, for whatever reason, for months.

He can do some signing though. He'll sign, "more, milk, please, thank you, bye bye."

I just see other tots his age who say a lot more.

All input is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time in advance
Hope you all are having a great Monday! :)

  • My LO only says 3 words and has no interest in signing back to me. She is quite mobile, starting cursing at 5 months and climbs everything in sight. Today she managed to stand in the seat part of et cart at target. While fastened in.

Omg, heart attack moment! I'm so glad my LO hasn't figured that out! Good luck!

Babies all develop at their own rates. My DD was more verbal but really slow to develop physically. She just wasn't in a rush to go anywhere. My DS is the total opposite- he is always on the go and is just now getting some words. Our pedi said at 15 that he wasn't concerned that DS only had mama, dada and some animal sounds. There really is a huge language explosion around 18 mo and again around 2yrs.

  • DD had zero words at 13 mos and DS had about 5.

I think he sounds like he is doing great.  It's impossible not to compare your LO to others but try to remember that there is a large range for accomplishing these things.  I would look a toddler book (Toddler 411) or something that gives you the average age ranges for milestones.
  • At our 15 month appointment our pediatrician said he'd like to see an 8-10 word vocabulary and that while verbal development can vary significantly among toddlers.. that this was an "average"... and, this was at 15 months! Honestly you have nothing to worry about at 13.5!!

Also, if your LO signs a lot that can also delay speaking a bit simply because they can communicate using sign language and don't need to work on using words.

DS said little to no words at 13 months. Uh oh and bye were probably the only two words.   He had a word explosion around 17 or 18 months, but before then, he said little that was decipherable.  Give you LO more time.

  • At 13 months my dd had maybe one or two words, all her pedi was looking for was babbling. By 18 months he was looking for 8 words and she had 12. Between her 18 month appointment and now at not even 20 months she has picked up probably over 30 new words. Your LO sounds totally fine, try not to worry!

  • DS says dada, hi, what's that?

My daughter is 14months and says: dada, mum, that?, there, bye, boo, boom, ball, dog, woof.  I think that is all.  She does understand a lot more and can perform simple requests "bring this to daddy" "go get your puppy" etc.

She nods her head yes and no in response to questions and if she wants something she will stare from it to us and nod her head yes (then proceed to tantrum if we do not give her said object - often something she should not have)!!

  • I wouldn't be worried. My son's 14 months. He only says mama, dada, and nana. He waves hi and bye. That's about it. Not worried though I think boys are slower to talk. I know girls his age saying puppy and French fries. They'll all get there eventually!
  • none. she had 6 words at her 18 mo appt and now at 19 months has 12+ words.  she is picking them up faster now (but still doesn't say mom!). pedi was not concerned.
  • Thank you for all your responses. That makes me feel much better. Maybe some of you are on to something about boys not talking as quickly as girls, I realize that I was comparing him to a lot of girls his age that have been around him. This one precious tot I think of in particular must be an alien or something ;) She can say "busy busy busy" while shaking her finger, "tickle" "I love you" all kinds of things! My son did master a lot of gross and fine motor skills early, maybe he was just too focused on that first! Thanks again everyone!

  • DS is almost 13.5 months and he has zero words, zero signs, and zero gestures -  he does not point, clap or wave.  He has recently started to put his hand up sometimes, when you wave to him.  Also just recently started to mimic some behaviors like putting his toy phone to hi hear to "talk".

I have spoken to a speech pathologist from one of the top hospitals in the country a few times (about this and about his feeding/texture issues) and she reassured me that this is not a problem.  He is aware, makes eye contact, interacts with people normally, and does other things that lead the expert to believe that there is no developmental delay.  Babies just develop at different paces, and language can be slower especially if the baby is focusing on motor skills.  DS started full-fledged walking a week before his 1st birthday and is not an unstoppable force of destruction around the house, physically.

Anecdotally, many people (including our pediatrician) have said that "boys walk first and girls talk first", or "I have three kids and my son didn't really start talking until he was 3, now we cannot shut him up!!!"

So, I wouldn't worry.  As long as his behavior and interractions otherwise seem normal, he should be fine.
