Tired baby logic: If you pick me up and hold me close, I will wiggle and kick with all my strength. But if you don't pick me up and hold me close, I will cry! Wait...why are you putting me down?! Don't you love me?!
I tried to leave my baby in the arms of my husband while I went to the kitchen for a midnight snack of cookies and milk, and the desperate look LO shot me as I was about to leave made me feel so guilty I wound up bringing him to the kitchen with me. Of course then I had to eat the cookies and milk one handed while holding LO sitting on my knee with the other, and LO squirmed and wiggled no matter what position I put him in. He wasn't hungry, only tired--I've learned to tell the difference. I wound up putting him in the swing to settle him. He is such a wiggleworm when he's tired, I can barely hold onto him.
They should make a pump that attaches but somehow we can still sleep while it's on maybe it numbs the nipples ? Idk just thinking lol
I don't pump anymore but this would be an amazing invention. You could get rich if you could figure out this mystery
So it appears that 3 and half hours is LOs limit between feeds. He kept wanting to eat in the 2 hours before bed, so he had a full bottle the first hour, then another one in breaks over the 2nd hour, then still seemed hungry when we came up to bed so I offered boob again. Whereupon he passed out so hard he woke up being swaddled but fell right back asleep once we stopped moving him around. No rocking / soothing needed. I was worried he would wake up 3 hours after we started all those feedings (which, due to the way they were spaced out would have been an hour or less after going down), but he didn't. I was also hoping that since he ate so much he would maybe sleep longer... But he didn't.
Still 3 and half hours I consider acceptable for this stage in the game. Waiting for that magical 5-6 hour stretch. Maybe once he starts to eat more in one sitting consistently
LO did 5 hours then 4 hours last night. But before you complain about my bragging his had a cold the last 4 days. So my nights consisted of screaming, hourly feeds and not wanting to be put down.
The power went out at 3 am so both LO and DS woke up. LO to eat, DS because his fan went off and it's dead silent in the house. I'm not a fan of power outages...it's so dark in here. Using the light from my phone to get around. DH is cuddled up with DS now. Fingers crossed it comes back on soon.
@mellymar I think LO having a formula bottle before bed makes a huge difference. I get an extra 2-3 hours out of her when she gets one. I didn't do one tonight and she woke up at midnight to snack.
After being awake for 9 straight hours yesterday, our sleep routine of course took another 3 hours of "fall asleep, put down, start screaming bloody murder after 10 minutes, repeat" until at 11:30 last night i finally said fuck it and settled in on the recliner for the night. She then slept until 5, ate, and went back down. Great, but I'd like to see my bed for at least a few hours each night. Sigh.
We are going to be all over her to nap today...yesterday was insane. Think it's the 6w growth spurt. DH had her for like 60 minutes last night and totally lost it because she cried the whole time. Yes, DH, welcome to my days, except many many times longer.
Also question for those using bassinet or crib. Our LO is a wiggle worm and we swaddle her. I woke up to her wiggled horizontally in her bassinet. Should I be worried? Especially being swaddled I worry about her getting suffocated or something
@katyertl We have a long time crib-sleeper who is a wiggle worm and always swaddled in a sleep sack. She wakes up ALL over the place and occasionally sort of curled up on her side. I don't worry about it though because what I've noticed is that most of her moving is as she's waking up. When I check on her in the night she's still on her back and fairly centered, but as she's waking up she could be anywhere and any combination of legs through the bars, which eventually ticks her off. So, in our case if LO is moving too much it's when she's waking anyway and would alert us to something being wrong if she did manage to flip or something.

You know I think that's true for our little girl too! Good point!

I worry about the same thing bc my LO will turn on her side sometimes when swaddled in her crib but if she isn't swaddled she won't sleep for longer than 10 minutes so there is no way I'm not swaddling her butt!! She sleeps in crib next to my bed so I'm constantly checking her so I won't stop now but soon when I move her to her room in the crib then I'm def going to have to stop.
LO slept from 830 until 1215 WIN for me:) and then hubs came home and fed her at 1215 and put her down at 1 and she's still sleeping another WIN but I'm up pumping grrr this could have been some major sleeping time for me!! I hate pumping!!!!! They should make a pump that attaches but somehow we can still sleep while it's on maybe it numbs the nipples ? Idk just thinking lol
I don't swaddle my LO anymore now that he's working on rolling over, and scooting/wiggling using his arms, etc.. Peds said around this time they should no longer be swaddled

We stopped swaddling LO after the first few days - he kept wriggling free and seems happier when he's free to move around. Hes been doing 4.5-6 hour stretches of sleep at night lately so it's working for us, but if he'd been used to the swaddle it might be a different story. Id imagine that weaning babies from swaddles must make for some difficult nights.

LO will be 10 weeks on Tuesday and we still use a swaddle sack. You can swaddle for much longer..she just likes her arms tucked down if she's not on her belly. I will swaddle until she protests or rolls over back to front (she does front to back but the other is months away). There's nothing developmentally wrong with it unless you're swaddling their legs up or doing anything that impacts mobility of the legs.

Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.
I use a baby sleeping bag for warmth, his arms are free. This is him from last night - he likes sleeping with his arms above his head. I don't usually use a blanket but it was colder than usual.
My LO always has, they have hyper reflexes and on their tummies they sleep much better because they don't startle .. We have to tell people the "new" recommendation is sleep on back on flat surface with no blankets. SIDS is a very complex and still unknown "syndrome" my baby sleeps on his tummy.. Always has, so did my daughter..He sleeps long, well, and they need their sleep for proper growth ...an adult on a hard flat surface without softness wouldn't be able to sleep ... Let alone a newborn with hyper reflexes and used to being snug tight in the womb. They used to "recommend " the opposite.. "On their tummies so they don't choke"... You need to make the decision on your own as to what's best for your babe... What's best for mine is lots of good long sleep, which is what they need for brain development and physical growth.. And a HAPPY BABY because he sleeps well.. (Noisy sleeper but great sleeper ... (He's a little tooter, his nickname is now "tootsie")... So ask your peds what the "new recommendation " for when they can "officially" tummy sleep... I know the answer because I have to tell my patients "back to sleep" .. Do you what you feel best for your LO.. If LO won't sleep... And then is unhappy and crying all the time because of no sleep ... Try things that work for you and your baby to keep you both happy and rested ...
@HayesRN13 I've been wanting to try tummy sleeping bc my LO has the worst reflexes so every single time she sleeps she has to be swaddled which is really annoying bc I have to basically wake her up to swaddle her ...i will sometimes during the day if I'm up let her sleep on her tummy but if I'm sleeping she's swaddled on her back...it's just so annoying the fear the docs give us with the new rules!! Maybe couple more weeks and I will start tummy sleeping bc she barely sleeps! Thanks for your input!!!
I have one of my brain buster headaches. Thank the gods DH is home today and this didn't happen on one of his duty days. Ate dinner, and straight to bed with me. He is in charge of LO for the last feed of the day, to put him down, and maybe the overnights as well. We'll see...
So we're in the 2nd leap (almost 8 weeks). The first one wasn't too bad, a little clingy & wanted to eat more. This one is hell. She went from sleeping an 8hr stretch back to 2 hour stretches & today she was so fussy & wanted to eat almost every hour, which resulted in WAY more spit up. Goodness. My DH & I were so frustrated. She finally went to sleep about 2 hours ago after her bedtime routine & is still asleep in the swing. I'm praying she does a long sleep tonight from wearing herself out today. Momma needs the rest to function tomorrow. I also am praying for a happy baby tomorrow so I can snuggle her. I go back to work Monday! *another reason I need sleep - if my middle schoolers smell a weakness, they'll eat me alive the first week*
So here's to NOT meeting you ladies here tonight - though I probably will. Thank goodness for Friends if I do.
LO is 8.5 weeks old and had been getting anywhere from 5-8 (rarely 8) hrs during the first stretch of sleep. Tonight, I thought we would see if giving him a bath before bed would help calm him down during his witching hours, which usually last from 630-bedtime. He did go down more easily after his feeding and fell asleep at 930ish. But he has since woken up at 1030p and now 145a...Coincidence? Or perhaps this is one of those leaps I keep hearing about.
I pump once at night too after nursing. Felt bad because I decided to wake LO after 5 hours as I had to get my pump in. Last time he woke right after I pumped. Still feel like I made a bad decision though. Just can't win

I'm so sorry .. Headaches are bad ... actually miserable, let alone when you have a LO to take care of... I hope this passes soon, and yes take advantage of Dh while you can.. Close door to bedroom .. Lights off... And I recommend a good white noise app blaring in your ear.. As you are a mama and will naturally wake when your LO makes a noise .. I love "sound sleeper" app.. It has a picture of a colored pacifier thing.. And has lots of great white noise options.. "Mountain river " is my favorite.. I blare that **it when DH has LO and I'm trying to nap
@klkonwi he's been quiet (when awake he's been good and he slept pretty well) but we are adjusting to his new and improved appetite. We are used to him taking only 2 ounces after boob time but he's begun taking more more often. So we end up giving him 2oz and seeing if he will go to sleep after, and if he doesn't then we know he's still hungry and make more. So we burn a half hour or so trying the go to sleep routine before we give him more formula. I'm sure he has some cues to show us he wants more food when he is done with that initial 2oz, but this is such a new thing we haven't learned them yet. He just now went out after another ounce +, so hopefully I can sleep the remainder of this headache off now
@mellymar hope you are feeling better!!! Baby just went four hours between feelings again, but didn't go back down easily after eating at midnight. So I'm exhausted. Finally woke DH up for help since it's the weekend. So sleepy. Have a feeling when LO wakes up at 7:30, he's coming into the bed with us so we can all sleep in...
I just woke up in the glider with the baby on the boppy boob out and the baby passed out. No idea how long we slept like that. I'm exhausted. LO is nursing again.....just finish please so we can both go back to bed!!! I'm afraid if I close my eyes to relax I'll just fall back asleep.
@HayesRN13 when did you transition your baby to the crib? We also have a tummy sleeper but she's 6 weeks and a few days old. She's still in the rock n play at night but naps in crib during day (trying flat on back during day but doesn't last long- tummy is her style!)
Last night sucked. Not because of LO though! He was so good, he slept from 10:30 until 8 am (!) so while I could have enjoyed a nice, long night of sleep my body decided it was the perfect time to be sick so I was in the bathroom from 12:30-1:30 and woke up again at 5 so now I'm tired but LO is up and ready to go because he had a nice, long night of sleep. FML
My babe hated the swaddle for a few weeks... But now it's ok again. I tuck one arm down and leave one arm out so he can suck his hand. He seems to sleep way better. He is also in a Pack n Play now, rather than bassinet, and also sleeps better in it. So many new factors, not sure what it is... We also have a/c and a fan going at night now, so maybe the cooler temps and white noise help? Dunno.
On a good night, he will go 4-5 hour chunks. Some nights he will have one 3-4 hour chunk, then wake every 1-2 hours. I've stopped looking at the clock or my iPad because I go back to sleep easier that way.
LO is 9 weeks, and his sleep is definitely getting better. Not every day. But the overall trend is definitely better.

I'm thinking "when she's teenager" is unfortunately the answer here.
