UO...

Please make them good today...I'm bored and if I don't have anything to entertain me, I'll probably just go shopping.

Re: UO...

  • I don't like the word tacky.
Example: "throwing your own baby shower is tacky".

This doesn't really qualify as an interesting UO, but it's all I've got right now. I-)

The only real UO I've ever had is that I don't like (really can't stand) organized religion. I'm also not convinced that God inspired a bunch of men to write a book. If we heard that these days, we'd lock them up. Some of the most skeptical people I know swear by the Bible and it amazes me. Don't get me wrong, I think the world is a better place because people believe in a higher power.
Well. Sometimes. :P Along those lines it drives me nuts when some ppl find out I am agnostic and are like, "Where do you get your morals from, then?" Because I have to believe in god to realize that killing a dude is wrong, apparently.
I took an ethics class in college & it was all about this very topic. It definitely had me questioning whether there are things in this universe that are inherently right & wrong. I'm a religious person, but even if I wasn't, I'd know not to go around stealing and murdering!

    I've got a few:

    1. Pitch Perfect was terrible.

    2. I can't express how gross I find Red Bull and Mountain Dew. I think it's totally sad & pathetic how addicted some people, especially some kids, are to energy drinks.

    3. In spite of all his crazy, I still totally have a thing for Tom Cruise.

Yeah you will probably have a hard time getting people pissed about this one. We are a pretty level headed crew.I am a Catholic but I still believe in the right for a woman to choose abortion and gay marriage and all that stuff I am not supposed to be for. I think it's more of a guide line as to how to live your life in a good way and a comfort to people who have lost friends/family that they are in a "better place" and they will see them again and that "bad people" will ultimately be punished for their wrongs.

  • TV licence you are a pain in the ass!
  • I think women who dream the whole lives of being a stay at home mom are odd...and I'm a SAHM. It's not the end all be all of existence. Honestly, now that I have a 9 year old, who has both had a SAHM and been in full time daycare, there is really no difference. My mom worked until I was 9 and then retired due to illness {MS}, it sucked. I liked having a working mother much more.

I totally always wanted to be a SAHM. Well, first a marine biologist and then an author, but then a SAHM. It is weird to think about that as being a life goal since its generally a temporary situation, though. I've always said I wanted to SAH until my youngest was in all-day school (I have kept a very PT job so that it will be easier to get working again). I had my mom home summers (teacher) and absolutely loved it and always wished she could be home all year, and I think that informed my desire to do it.
And maybe that's what it was. I saw how happy my mom was when she worked and the challenges of being a single parent were hard, but she really loved her job and made it seem so cool. Don't get me wrong, I like staying home and it's actually permanent for me, but there is no way I would give up certain things to stay home like some people do. I also find it so odd, that when I interview babysitters, they almost all say they can't wait to have kids and stay home with them. Of course, they're all students at a Baptist college...maybe that goes hand and hand.
  • I'll add to the Pitch Perfect hate...I can't stand Rebel Wilson. She's funny bc she makes fun of herself. That's not funny.

I born and raised in a catholic household BUT there is a lot of things I don't agree with. I don't feel the need to have to go to church every Sunday to talk to God when I can talk to him in my car or pray when I want to. I also don't need to tell a priest all the bad things I have done and I can just "talk" to God about it when I want. I'm also all about the LGBT community having the right to marry... ect.. ect.... Old school Catholics LOVE me... not.

I guess that my UO is that I think breast feeding has kind of become kind of like a cult and if you don't participate you are shunned. I have a friend who can't produce and so she uses formula and the shit she gets from other moms who are breast feeding is incredible!

Women in my family often have issues with breast feeding so I will probably do what most of them have done and pump and bottle feed. I still plan on trying to breast feed but if it doesn't work then I am not going to feel bad pumping and giving it in bottles. It is still breast milk regardless where they get it from but I have seriously have heard people say "if you don't breast feed you don't care about your baby."

Really? People get upset because the breast milk comes from a bottle instead of the breast? That just sounds bizarre.

None of my friends (nor did my mother) so far have breastfed so I'm going into this blindly. My SIL and best friend are both breastfeeding, so I assume they'll give me some pointers. But I can't imagine anyone daring to give me crap. No, really. I dare them to give me crap if I'm not able to breastfeed.

@loolaide, I know there are always exceptions for certain family circumstances, but some just seem to want to shut family out for no good reason. That was all I was saying.

@amberpro, my main problem with organized religion is that most people I've encountered in a church setting seem to forget about the portion of the Bible that expressly states "thou shalt not judge." I don't know why but it bothers me more in that environment than in any other. I'm perfectly okay with others disagreeing with me on the topic though.

I understand that, and it bothers me, too. I can't say "most" but I can say many. But I also think any time you get a group of people together for any reason, there will be discrepancies in beliefs and opinions. It's up to us to make out own choices. I think we grow through discussion and disagreement in all aspects of life.

Over here you have to a TV Licence to watch TV in your home, whether on your TV, laptop, tablet, phone etc. It's £145.50 / $229.88 a year. They have sent me a letter this morning saying they are taking me to court because I haven't a licence, it's in DH's name dumb asses!

He is just toooooo sexy not to.....Mmmmmm......

The thought of having sex with Tom Cruise legit makes me nauseated.
Let me say this...I don't think about having sex with him or anyone other than DH...Never have and never will, (unless DH dies and I remarry).  To me, a crush and sex dreaming are different.  I might like to look.  but, it never goes any further than  "Ooo he's cute..."  And moving on.

I guess it was the use of the word "sexy" that made me go to the sexy place.

Do you also have to pay monthly for cable services? Because that's expensive!

Yes we do. We pay the licence off in one hit every year or they charge you extra to pay quarterly, monthly or weekly. Then we have our satellite services on top!

Does this include things like Netflix, or is it just cable/network tv (or the equivalent)?

You have to have a Licence for streaming too, we have to input our TV licence number into Netflix for it to work. It you have something that shows a live or recorded show, DVD player or VHS player you still need a licence.

Only students on a university campus or OAPs don't have to pay.

Yes you do. Basically if it has a screen and shows a TV show, films or videos you need a Licence. That includes phones, laptops, portable DVD players, the lot!

  • Oh but you get a discount if you have a black and white TV, but an officer has to come to inspect that you have a black and white TV and they will drop in from time to time to make sure you still have a black and white TV.

I'm not saying family all up in your vag, but just there to support you and DH. But but..."my mom and mil are crazy blah blah blah..." I know I know, but unless she going to start punching out nurses to get into your delivery room while you're open wide for a cervix check, I don't see a problem with family waiting in the waiting room for as long as they want just to be there for you. And when you are ready, welcome them in. I couldn't imagine not being there for my children while they experience one of the greatest things in life.
Oh man. I just DO NOT have this relationship with my family, or DH's. I love my mom dearly, but it gives me anxiety to think of her coming to the hospital, since she will be caring for DD, even after the baby is born. I am going to be a hot mess in the hospital, and I'd just rather no one other than DH sees it. They can meet the baby when she comes home. I will still be a mess, but a bit more of a contained mess, hopefully.

We have our TV, broadband and Landline with the same company. It comes to just under $110 a month.
  • @frankierokx wow! Well I'm sure us in the US pay for something that you guys don't. But just wow!

I'm going to express my opinions on the religion topic... I've stated I'm a Christian, but usually stay out of it all. 1. I feel organized religion (i.e. the church) has an important end. I think it's vital in a person's growth in Christ (not to mention the church attendee's part in other's growth). 2. I feel there are many churches and Christians that can't see the forest for the trees, per se. The point is a personal relationship with Christ. I feel all the rules and judgement some people throw around is way off God's purpose and do nothing but turn people off and push them away. 3. In response to @MamaHanna, I also think it's an incorrect notion that Christians aren't "supposed" to support gay marriage or be pro-choice. What Christians aren't supposed to do is judge. And that is a struggle of the flesh I feel most people fight... No matter what they're judging. I also don't agree with God and Christianity being about comfort. Many parts of a relationship with Christ are very uncomfortable. And losing a loved one isn't comfortable even with Christ. I have no idea if I'll see them again. Heaven is an incomprehensible thing. I pray for peace and strength to move on. I don't mean to start anything, just giving my personal "unpopular opinion" on the matter :).

While that is true that many organized religions do support gay marriage and controversial things like that the reason why I made the comment that I am not "supposed to" is because I am Catholic and my religion says that it is wrong. There is no way around that, black and white in our core doctrine it's there that the church does not approve of it. I personally disagree and think that God is the only person who can judge us and if he feels it's wrong that is his choice to make not mine.

Does your monthly bill include taxes and fees as well?  I'm wondering if the license is basically what we pay, but our charges are
    buried in the bill.

Our monthly bill includes the 12.5% taxes and fees.

  • So does the TV license pay for BBC, etc? What do they do with the money?
  • @amberpro, my main problem with organized religion is that most people I've encountered in a church setting seem to forget about the portion of the Bible that expressly states "thou shalt not judge." I don't know why but it bothers me more in that environment than in any other. I'm perfectly okay with others disagreeing with me on the topic though.
As a Christian, I think the Christian church has forgotten a lot of things. Church has become more about the institution and membership rather than the spiritual well being of its audience. Don't get me wrong... Churches shouldn't have to be compliant or indulgent of every person's lifestyle If it doesn't agree with what they teach. But they should always be welcoming to these people- never hostile. They need to learn to discuss conflicts of interest without being judgey.
Maybe I am super lucky, but I have never come across any church's or Christian's half as awful as what some of you are encountering. I have to remind my IL's from time to time that the Bible also stresses that we shouldn't judge others. I don't know how many times I have said that no matter what sin you think they're committing, judging them is just as bad. That's about the worst of it though.
I hate that y'all have had the experiences that you've had. Come to my church, and I swear you won't feel beady, Judgey eyes watching you. We're all very aware that we're not perfect and have no place to judge.

In the waiting room - Perfectly fine by me.  L&D - Nope.  not happening.  After delivery and everyone is cleaned up and comfy, perfectly fine by me.

    ETA - clarity

I think its rude of family to assume they can be in the L&D room with you.  I think it's such a private special time and if you and your SO just want it to be the two of you then people should respect that.  This world is way to entitled.
