Moms who bump in the night

Between all the new babies being born and those of us lucky ducks who are still pregnant and just can't sleep, I figure maybe it's time to start a middle of the night thread? I loved the MOTN thread on my old BMB, it was great to read through during feedings and such. Also it helps the board not completely die once all the babies are here.

Looking forward to being awake for another 3-4 hours while hubby snores away next to me... yay for pregnancy induced insomnia. All I want to do is go take a nice hot bath, but our water line exploded in our front yard the other day, so we're without water for a few days... fun stuff.

Hi friends!  4am here.  I love this idea.

Baby made some intense suckling noises about 30 minutes ago, so I picked him up to nurse.  But I had to pee, so DH took baby on his chest to keep baby calm while I peed (which is quite the operation around here).

Baby has since stopped making noises and is absolutely adorably asleep on DH's chest (DH is now also asleep).  I am totally wide awake and not tired at all.  Is it safe for me to sit here a bit while they cuddle asleep in the bed?  My heart is melting and I know I should put baby back in the crib but this is too precious for me to interrupt just yet.

I know bed sleeping is a big no-no for choking reasons, but is it okay if I'm not asleep?

@entropicallyfavored I feel like as long as you are watching them, it's okay.

im laying in the hospital bed trying to yell at DH to get him to wake up so he can give me DS. It's a lot of work for me to get out of bed. So untill
then, it's crappy hospital TV shows at 3 am. Haha

It's night 2 at home w baby and we are taking turns watching / letting baby sleep with us on couch.  Last night we tried to put her in bassinet in her swaddle pod but the minute we put her in she rolled to her side.  Husband stayed up for a few hours watching to make sure she didn't suffocate.  Then when it was time to BF I got up, then we did skin to skin and I let her sleep on me like we did in hospital.  we are taking her for 1st ped visit tomorrow and going to ask about what to do with the side sleeping - I will not be able to have us both sleeping if I know she's going to roll to her side in her bassinet.

Anyone else ever deal with side sleeper and have suggestions?

I think the worst part about feeding babies has got to be the burping! Our babies usually fall asleep during this and the Pedi told us you can't burp a sleeping baby... So then we play the wake baby up game.  :s

@rikopy I am so glad I'm not the only one that thinks this!! Sometimes DS will take a while to burp afterwards and I just feel so bad!

@rikopy and @msdidonato Should I be worried if baby is not burping?  Am I not trying hard enough?  Also, @msdidonato did DH get up?  I'm on night three at home and getting out of bed is still really hard and painful, so I hear you.  Hope the shows weren't too terrible!

@entropicallyfavored I'm a FTM and no baby yet, but I just took a breastfeeding class and the instructor said breastfed babies tend to burp less than bottle fed (due to decreases amount of air), and if they fall asleep to let them sleep. The thought of that is scary to me in case they have bad reflux or something, so we will just have to see how I react when I'm actually in that situation too!

@caitlinj187 Thanks for the tip.  Maybe I can sleep now instead of lying awake listening acutely for sounds of distress.  I also fear the reflux/throwing up in the night.  Just to warn you, it did happen in the hospital quite a bit which was really scary.  The nurses said that sometimes babies still have amniotic fluid in their stomachs after birth, and feeding breast milk on top of that can cause them to throw up in the night.  It was scary and nurses came in to help us, but it hasn't happened since (knock on wood).  Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

I don't know why I didn't bump through the night last night. I guess I forgot this thread was created! Had contractions 20 minutes apart from 1am to 4:45. They seemed to stall out. Ugh, so tired, just want baby to come!

@Wolfie646 I would roll up 2 receiving blankets and place them starting at her ribs. That way they aren't near her face.

And in in regards to burping a sleeping baby- I would put DS upright on my chest and lightly burp him. I think most times when he fell asleep he didn't burp. Also try starting around the shoulder blades, work your way down to the bum then back up.

@entropicallyfavored. Yep!! I let him sleep thru the midnight feeding bc his stomach is really upset. Part of me felt really bad making him get up to help me, but it's a huge ordeal to get out of bed still. Trying to not over do it. He is a great DH. Just sleeps SOO soundly lol

@entropicallyfavored DD burped very little. I never woke her if I didn't have to.

    Lurking..

@Wolfie646 My DD was a side sleeper and the nurses at the hospital told us to roll up a receiving blanket to prop her up a bit on the one side.  Worked fine and she never had any issues.

@entropicallyfavored My DD was breastfed and rarely burped or spit up.  I think they do get less air when breastfeeding, and some kids just aren't as prone to burping/spitting as others.

DS nursed to sleep a lot, and I never woke him to burp him. Sleep trumps gas-let that baby sleep!

Thought I was past the insomnia thing  :( Fell right asleep but woke up about 45 min later and can't go back to sleep. What a fake out. Sigh.

Just nursed baby A but she's getting fussier these days so I put her on my chest when she fell asleep (love me some skin to skin still). I didn't want to lay her down and swaddle her in case she wakes up. It's 4 am now and I'm hoping she won't wake up until 6 or 7 am.

@Car0liiine oh hell no. I'd be screaming at him!!  He better show up in the morning!!

@AliKay20 So funny that we had the exact same experience at the same time tonight. Love the Bump for just that, so comforting. Baby Everett was losing his baby mind with crying so I did the exact same thing: skin to skin in a chair.  He slept so very hard (and got completely soaked with breast milk since he wouldn't feed, lol) until just now, which means DH finally got some sleep! I hope Baby A slept through until 7am, too!

@Nikkoli110 Good morning! It was great! We were very blessed to have so many people celebrate baby. It also felt great to be able to get stuff done after it so I don't feel like I am in limbo anymore. :) Now the waiting game begins. I can't believe you have your LO already!

I'm so tired and of course can't sleep  :# about to enjoy some cereal. You know I'm trying to decide on a baby bouncer and can't...What bouncer did you get for your little ones?

@Duffgurl mmmm cereal actually sounds like a good idea. We are still deciding on a bouncer/swing too. Right now all we have is a rock n play. I'm not sure if we need something more or not?

I went to bed last night hoping that I could try and sleep in before my 36 week appointment at 930 today. Ha! Yeah right! I am debating on getting a cervical check even though I was at first going to deny them. Only because my mucous plug came out and I get sporadic cases of BH. Decisions decisions...

Rock N Plays are great but was so hard to transition our little ones to a crib from it. So make sure you lay your LO flat every now and then. I have a appt the 28th and I'm debating a check too...I'm thinking no. She'll come when she's ready. I just want to sleep for at least 8hrs straight no interruptions.

With our first LO we had the rainforest bouncer by fisher price and I still love that one and have nothing but positive things to say about it. With our 2nd we had Comfort & Harmony Cradling Bouncer, Cozy Kingdom and it was ok. Nothing like the rainforest one.

I wish they they made more vibrant bouncers with lights. They all seem so plain.

@Duffgurl Thanks for the tip with the Rock N play. I actually think I know which rainforest bouncer you are talking about. I picked one up in fairly good condition at a garage sale earlier this summer. Yay!

ETA: photo of jumper we got. :)

@Duffgurl yeah I wasn't sure if bouncer and jumper were the same ha! So much baby terminology to learn! We also have the rainforest bouncer given to us by a friend who didn't need it anymore. I love that when you pull on the animals it makes noises. So I guess all we are really debating on is a swing!

Also, it's a good thing our dog is cute, he's a naughty little nugget.
