Re: The Great Big Question Thread

  • @advancedmaternalrage ME! I have been waking up hungry! It’s crazy. I snack all day. Eat dinner early because I am starving by 5pm and then I can’t eat anything else because I am so full. But like clock work hunger strikes after midnight!

  • @motherofahobbit - I’ve had an at home water birth with a midwife and a hospital birth with a midwife that turned into a hospital birth with a maternal fetal medicine doctor that ended up as a hospital birth with only a l&d nurse and my homebirth midwife there (the hospital gets busy 😂). LMK if I can answer any specific questions for you.

  • @advancedmaternalrage yes! I think it’s because I can barely stomach anything during the day. I’ve been trying to get small snacks in when I can.
  • Hi all!

First time mom here. I am having severe allergy and congestion symptoms and even had a low grade fever yesterday. My doctor gave the okay for allergy meds, but not being able to sleep at night is killing me. Not to mention this is one week at work where I don’t have any down time.

Anyone have any tips or tricks that have worked for you to ease congestion? I’ve tried steaming up the bathroom and my trusty Neti-pot but of course the relief from those only lasts a few minutes.
  • @amandarbloom sorry to hear you’re not feeling well! Definitely try unisom sleep tabs to help knock you out at night. For medicines, these are what Allina health resources suggest during pregnancy:

  • Hey not sure if anyone will remember my first post or comment. I went to my first appointment and ultrasound march 28th. Thinking i was 7weeks4days but measured 5weeks0days and wasnt sure if pregnancy stuck or not. I did blood work that day for hcg. I was 6,707.6 March 28th. And two days later i did blood work and my number was 9,404.84 so it didnt double. But it did rise . im just shocked they wont see me again til april 18th being my first appointment march 28th left me so unsure and idk whats going on. Is my pregnancy sticking or not. Such a long time to not know whats going on with my BODY! Ugh (didnt have any bleeding as of yet so its the only thing keeping me hopeful plus i still have pregnancy symptoms!)
  • @mommyanddaddyalbarado The further along you get, the longer it can take for HCG levels to double. I am not a medical professional, but based on what I've read, it seems it can take 3+ days to double after the first few weeks before plateauing around 8-10 weeks. Your level went up, so I'd say that's promising. Also, if your Dr. isnt expressing concern and wants to wait to see you until 4/18, I'd try to take that as a good sign too.

Think positive thoughts. Today, you are pregnant.
  • I take Pristiq for severe depressive disorder. My Dr said it's low-risk in early pregnancy but after the second tri there are more risks, so I will work with my OB at that time to weigh the risks vs rewards. However, that's specific to that medication and there definitely are some that are higher risk. If you haven't met with your OB yet, you can call your Dr's office to confirm if you can continue any current medications.
  • If we're going to start doing weekly questions threads, should we unsticky this one?
  • Thank you. Hopefully since my Dr is having me wait til then... He feel confident that my pregnancy is progressing. If a week or so behind what I thougut.. And that's it. Then wfffft. *sign of relief* i cant wait for my second appointment/ultrasound on april 18th!!! Im nervous and so anxious til then! Ill definitely update after that appointment💘💘

  • Does anyone have suggestions for pregnancy safe ways to get rid of a zit the size of the Titanic on my face?

that’s the same with me! I feel awful on days where I’m a couch bum but feel great while I’m busy @ameyer00
  • Did any other mommas do IVF and can help me out with some side effects? I’ve had a slipped disc for years, have had no pain since 2019, and right now I’m a physical disaster. My docs says it could be the estrogen supplements causing my body to release relaxin. I stop taking estrogen and the other med next week… has anyone else had severe mobility issues from IVF meds and did they go away after stopping taking them? Or did the issues linger due to your body being out of whack?

I am freaking out a bit at the idea of 7 months of this pain - I assumed I would get sciatica third trimester but am shocked at the pain I’m in already.

@fantasyflyte a dot of honey or rubbing alcohol should help clear it out. TBH in both pregnancies thus far I’ve used Murad spot remover with salicylic acid just directly on the head of the pimple if it’s aggressive.

  • Back in the day when I was pregnant with my son (2005) I was told don’t color your hair. So is that still a thing??? I have had gray hair since I was about 20 and I don’t want to look like older than I already am…
  • Same here. This is my first (at 38) and my midwife asked if I would like one at 10 weeks (transvaginal). Our preference is we would like one done and told everything looks healthy before any news is shared.
  • @brandi-h I think it's mostly safe depending on the formula used, but for safety sake I think most prefer you don't go all the way to the root. I did my hair a few times when I was pregnant with my son and my hairdresser just stopped a few mm from the root.

Question for those with 2 that are less than a year and a half apart:
Did you tandem nurse? What differences did you find in the second pregnancy? Any advice for the coming of baby #2 when you have a 14 month old?

    Nipple shields are a godsend!

Two of mine are 17 months apart. I did not tandem nurse. Mine was a little different situation, though, because the first couldn’t nurse. She had a poor patch, so I EPed until my supply dropped, and then I supplemented with formula. I swore I’d pump to a year, and I did, and toward the end I was getting just a few oz a day. If I had been able to breastfeed normally, I still wouldn’t have tandem nursed. I just personally have no desire to do that. I would have nursed longer though. Probably to the 15 month mark or so. Who knows, hard to say.

I’m not sure what you mean by differences.

No real advice. It’s hard having two under two. It just is. I also had an older child, 20 months older than the 17-month-old. I felt overwhelmed for a long time. Still do sometimes and the youngest is now 20 months.
  • Yes I am having spotting too! It is very stressful. I am trying to just take it easy and assume everything is fine so long as it stays light.

    hcg question

    I’m 8wks2days - hcg 260,000

dr sent me in for testing to see if it was a molar pregnancy or multiples - it was neither - 1 baby 1 good heartbeat

ever heard of reasons for a high number? I refuse to google and freak myself out.
  • Has anyone had a subchorionic hematoma and passed a blood clot and then nothing?
I’m 9w3d and last night I wiped and there was blood and a small clot. No cramping it was just there. I was just trying to go to the bathroom. 100% freaked out. My husband is working out of town I called him crying. We lost a baby 2 years ago at 9 weeks.
I am calling the doctors office as soon as they open. I did still take my progesterone and there was no more blood during the night…But was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this???
  • @brandi-h not the same but I had some light bleeding around 11.5 weeks with my daughter and everything turned out fine. I bled for a few weeks and they never figured out what it was. She's a healthy and happy 1.5 year old! I know how terrifying it can be though. I had 3 prior miscarriages so I had a panic attack. Definitely call your doctor asap so they can get you in and take a look ❤ I hope it's nothing!

@lilsWed174741 high HCG could have been from a vanishing twin. High HCG is also a marker for down syndrome.
ETA: your numbers, while on the high side, are still on the chart for average/normal range, even if at the very top.

  • Anyone here experience cloudy urine? Not sure if it is anything to worry about.
  • I just want you to know that I am thinking about you and can understand how scary you must have felt (alone, especially). Hugs, mama. Talking it over with your doctor will help you.
  • @erey339
could be a UTI.  Any pain or burning?
    Current pregnancy -
First BFP on 1/4/22.  Due date 9/13/22.

Four prior losses, no living children - 1 first trimester miscarriage, 1 blighted ovum, 1 chemical, and one extreme premature live birth daughter who died at 15 days old.

My urine is cloudy every pregnancy so far. No complications from it, but yes, my urine is usually cloudy when pregnant. Doctor didn’t think it was a big deal.

  • @brandi-h with my first daughter I had a SCH and would randomly pass clots or blood. If it has stopped, I would say you can probably relax a little. If heavy bleeding continues I think that is when doctors get concerned.

Doctors had me on kind of modified bed rest, used wheelchair to get around if I had to walk long distances and pelvic rest (all pelvic activities). I hope this turns out okay for you! ❤️

same here. I think there's extra protein in the urine when you're pregnant and that's why?

  • @brandi-h I had one with my daughter around 11 weeks, and it was definitely scary for me. I went to the ER to have it scanned and they recommended modified bed rest and pelvic rest for a few weeks just to be careful. It worked and she’s a healthy 2.5 year old now! Hoping for the same outcome for you!

Does anyone know when placenta is supposed to fully take over? I keep reading conflicting things. I think my nausea peaked last week at 8w with nausea and vomiting all day and now down to just nausea and haven’t vomited since this past Saturday and I’m now 9w4d. Does that mean placenta is starting to take over?

@stasia415 It’s different for everyone but apparently sometime between weeks 8-12 is when the placenta fully takes over for most pregnancies. And the placenta produces a lot more progesterone which apparently is the magic ingredient that helps reduce nausea in the second trimester! I am 9w2d and I thought my nausea was slowly disappearing the past few days, but today it came back with a vengeance 😭
  • I have tested twice for UTI and negative!
  • I’m 8+4 weeks today and I’m wondering if everyone is experiencing pain around the lower belly when coughing/sneezing. It goes away immediately after. Not sure if it could be round ligament pain, as it’s super early?
  • I definitely had that too - it felt like I was pulling a muscle or something. I forgot to ask my doc about it but I just had my 10 week ultrasound a couple days ago and everything looked good so I think it’s probably just part of our bodies changing and stretching.
