The Great Big Question Thread!

Re: The Great Big Question Thread!

  • Baby #2 here and I had the start of RLP around 6 weeks. I didn’t think it would happen that early but apparently I was wrong. It’s definitely only getting worse (10 weeks now)

  • @krysnicole1022 @mckenzc @bows22 man this sucks! I spaced out this pregnant pretty far, so I don't remember everything from my first 2. Who are 10 and 8 this year. Lol I'm gonna talk to my doctor on the 31st when I go and hopefully he agrees.
  • @mrsramirez50 I also started feeling pretty uncomfortable in my lower abdomen/pelvic area when I’m sitting down. This just started today. I don’t know if it’s a second pregnancy thing or my age or what. I guess maybe a combo of both.
  • Hello! I am new here. Just had my 1st prenatal appt and ultra sound. just under 8 weeks along, so exciting and emotional! I hope I'm using this forum correctly!

I am looking for best resource to learn what is considered safe/not safe as far as face/skincare products go. Google is the worst! If you have recommendations on a book or best website I'd appreciate it! I just want to make sure the very little bit of product I'm using is considered pregnancy safe!
  • @crys_camp did you ask at your appointment? i asked at my first appointment with my last pregnancy and they basically said that as long as it didn’t have retinol it was fine. Not totally helpful obviously haha
  • @bows22 Of my long list of questions that was the one I missed! I'll bring it up at my 12 week appt for sure. Appreciate the reply!
  • @crys_camp Salicylic Acid is another one to avoid, and this is in a fair number of face washes. There's a good article on ingredients to avoid or be mindful of here: http://globalnews.ca/news/3383851/11-skincare-ingredients-to-avoid-during-pregnancy/
  • @krthouse that article makes it seem like salicylic acid in face wash is okay? I had heard that it should be avoided too so that was actually what I asked my OB specifically about and she said that it’s fine in a face wash because it’s not on your face long enough to absorb. I think it’s just another inconsistent thing.
  • had a trip planned for over a year now that is overseas. Has anyone else traveled a pretty long distance at 20 weeks or know anyone who has and would say it is safe to do so at that point in pregnancy? Really hoping I’m still able to go, as this has been a huge deal, but looking for people with some experience traveling so I don’t make an irrational decision here :)
  • Every morning when I take my vitamins (with food) I end up needing to rest on the couch for a good 30 minutes to an hour from feeling icky. I feel like between that and taking care of our toddler I completely lose my mornings. Anyone else dealing with that vitamin after effect? I definitely didn't get it with DS and I was on the same vitamin regimen.
  • @krthouse
I was having a similar feeling with my vitamins (and, well, everything). The past few days I've been taking them right before I go to bed and I definitely notice that I don't feel as awful in the morning.
  • I am starting to experience daily headaches, lots of stress on the back of the neck. Anyone have any massager machine thing that’s worked for this? I really don’t want to take a Tylenol daily.
  • @fichey do your prenatals have iron? That can cause nausea in a lot of moms.
  • I have a shiatsu back massager and my husband got me a foot and leg massager during my last pregnancy. I keep it under my desk. Haha
  • @krysnicole1022
Yep! 100% DV for Iron. I've had issues with iron supplements causing nausea (and other fun side effects) in the past. Switching to taking them at night with unisom + b6 has really helped me.

I am 11 weeks and my symptoms have subsided quite a bit. To the point of stressing me out 😅 I really just have nasal congestion and sometimes sore boobs.  anyone else start to feel better during this time. I have read that I could be lucky but like everyone else I find reassurance in being sick
  • I just hit week 9 and my nausea has suddenly stopped, definitely getting nervous. Nausea started week 6 and was bad from week 7 to 8.5. I also had some constipation during that time (I’m sure the junk food I ate to ease the nausea didn’t help). I had my worst day of nausea followed by some diarrhea. I read that being constipated can make nausea worse. Has anyone else experienced this? It seems once I “cleared out” is when the nausea drastically decreased. I don’t see my doc for another 1.5 weeks, not sure if I should try to go in sooner :s
  • Does any one know if spray tans are pregnancy safe? How about other self tanning products? I plan to ask my OB next time I see her, just wondering what you know.
  • @alynn0789 I’ve heard spray tans are not safe because of the fumes with be being sprayed on. But I have read that self tanning lotions and foams are safe.

Here I go with a polarizing question. I was just gifted “Expecting Better” and am very torn on whether to read it or not. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Controversial? Data driven?

If you choose the “controversial” side of things, would love to hear a recommendation on other books that were found to be useful instead.
  • @daisyyyy I know someone who just too a 9 hour flight to hawaii and is just over 20 weeks now. Dr suggested getting up to walk around to avoid any clots. As long as you don’t have complications and aren’t high risk, likely there isn’t a reason not to go :-)

  • @mcclanna I read expecting better. I’d say it’s well researched and the author doesn’t ever tell you what you should or shouldn’t do. Just gives information about where certain studies have come from and why it can be so difficult to get good facts about pregnancy/conduct rigorous studies. I wouldn’t say I loved the book (maybe read it when I was already feeling too anxious?) but I didn’t find it controversial. It’s just information you can take or leave depending on what feels good to you. But I did really like the book Like A Mother by Angela Garbes. She’s obsessed with the placenta so I learned a ton about that organ. 😁
  • @mcclanna I loved Expecting Better. It came recommended to me by my therapist and all my mom friends. It's a really level headed look at the studies that shape pregnancy recommendations. Not sure what would be controversial about it.
  • 1. My symptoms faded at 9 weeks and baby was just kicking at 11 and a half!

    2. Salicylic acid is perfectly fine in topical and they almost never exceed 2% concentrations.

    3. I would wear compression socks on a flight as well.
  • @branchflower731 I hate to be a downer, but that's not your baby kicking, not at 11 weeks and certainly not with a first baby.  The first "kicks" will feel like flutters and typically don't occur until at least 14-15 weeks (and usually later, with a first pregnancy - 16 to 18 weeks is more typical).  What you're likely experiencing now is round ligament pain.
    Current pregnancy -
First BFP on 1/4/22.  Due date 9/13/22.

Four prior losses, no living children - 1 first trimester miscarriage, 1 blighted ovum, 1 chemical, and one extreme premature live birth daughter who died at 15 days old.

  • @daisyyyy I traveled with my first baby pretty extensively - like every week for work - until I was 36 weeks. At that point they said no more travel! Thank goodness haha. I would ask your doctor but generally my providers have said to go ahead and travel until pretty far along. I’m actually in South America right now at 12 weeks. My midwife didn’t see an issue with it.
  • I am 13 weeks and 2 days and pretty sure I felt the baby today! I got the flutters a few times today it felt like more of like a small pulse or like a little wave. It was quick and it was in my lower abdomen and a little more to the right, wasn’t directly centered. Never felt anything like that before and definitely wasn’t gas lol. When I first felt it I was like oh my goodness was that it and then a few hours later I felt it again several times in a row. This is my first but I’m super intuitive with my body so I feel like I’ll catch it when it happens but just curious if anyone else has felt this yet with this pregnancy or if any mama’s have experienced this in past pregnancies that could shed a little light on it for me I know I’m just barely there but I’ve heard you can feel it around this time. I also overthink things too 😂 so kinda wanna know
    i’m not that crazy lol
  • @katiebeth2022 so I’m 10 weeks 6 days today and last night I felt exactly what you are describing. It’s my second but it’s definitely too early to feel anything, so it has to just be my uterus stretching. But I still like to think of it as baby related!
  • I'm on my fourth baby. Definitely feeling flutters and swooshes. I'm only 11 weeks but I've been feeling stuff for awhile. I know exactly where the baby is and that's the only place I feel anything. I'm also really sensitive to it. I felt the fluttering as I watched the baby move on the ultrasound. It's a pretty distinct feeling. It's doesn't feel like RLP or even my uterus stretching. Neither of those feel particularly good. It's also definitely not the same sensation as kicking. There is no way to confuse RLP and kicking. Every woman is different so when you feel anything will vary. With all three of mine I felt kicking at 17 weeks exactly. The last two my husband could feel the kicking then also. Meanwhile I have friends who didn't feel kicks until 22 weeks or more even after multiple babies. It really depends.
  • tpecitpeci member
Yep it really depends on different factors! With my first I had anterior placenta and didn't feel much until 22-24 weeks which is really the later timeframe from the normal. Haven't felt anything yet with this second one (only 10w though) but I would guess it's not impossible depending on how in tune and sensitive you are! I'm hoping I don't get another anterior placenta so I can enjoy the earlier kicks/movements before they start feeling uncomfortable when baby is running out of space haha
  • @tpeci I have had anterior placentas all four times. The second ones are usually more obvious because you know what to look for (or feel for) so hopefully you get to enjoy those kicks earlier this time. I always liked the reassurance.
  • Has anyone had an umbilical hernia repaired with mesh netting & then got pregnant? All the Dr told me was that it will painful & it could cause problems. I didn’t know what to say after that.. please tell me it’s not that bad. I had it done 4/5 years ago.

Oh thanks for that! That's pretty reassuring ☺️

I meant he was kicking in an ultrasound aka he’s fine even though my symptoms faded.
  • Can someone describe round ligament pain to me ? Today while walking I started feeling an ache on my left side in the pelvic area. It does feel better with laying but when I move it returns- again it’s a dull ache. I have no bleeding and no reduction of symptoms. But this ache is causing my anxiety to spike
  • *lurking from October* that's actually a pretty accurate description @relizabethp

  • @relizabethp I thought RLP was more of a sharp pain but I also get the dull ache you are describing so maybe it can be both. But either way you aren’t alone!
  • Do you think we should switch this up and start doing a monthly questions thread instead? Just trying to figure out how to spark some more conversation on the board. We could tag admin to unpin this one and it would fall down on the board if we don’t comment on it.
